Life Todd was born in London , England , the son of an author, Henry Cooke Todd. His family emigrated to York, Upper Canada in 1833. The following year, York was incorporated as the city of Toronto ; Todd, though young, produced an Engraved Plan of the City of Toronto , which brought him to the attention of the prominent lawyer, Robert Baldwin Sullivan . Drawing on his experience in the House of Assembly's library and a keen interest in British parliamentary practice and its application in Canada and other British colonies, Todd published The Practice and Privileges of the Two Houses of Parliament in 1840. When, in 1841, Upper and Lower Canada were merged , Todd was appointed assistant librarian to the Legislative Assembly of the united province, which adopted his Practice and Privileges as an official guide for members. Product Description
In the days of Roch’s childhood, winters in the village of Ste. Justine were long. Life centered around school, church, and the hockey rink, and every boy’s hero was Montreal Canadiens hockey legend Maurice Richard. Everyone wore Richard’s number 9. They laced their skates like Richard. They even wore their hair like Richard. When Roch outgrows his cherished Canadiens sweater, his mother writes away for a new one. Much to Roch’s horror, he is sent the blue and white sweater of the rival Toronto Maple Leafs, dreaded and hated foes to his beloved team. How can Roch face the other kids at the rink?

5-0 out of 5 stars Le chandail de hockey/ The hockey sweater
Scroll down for english review

***

When Carrier's Montreal Canadiens hockey sweater wears out, his mother writes to Eaton's to order a new one. Unfortunately, the company ships a sweater from the Canadiens' bitter rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carrier does not want to wear the new sweater, but his mother refuses to let him wear the old worn out sweater, and does not want to return the new sweater for fear of offending Mr. Eaton and it fits so well, unaware that the company would have been happy to exchange it. As a result, he is forced to wear the Leafs sweater to his hockey game, where all the other players on the ice are wearing Canadiens sweaters.

The story is widely considered an allegory for the linguistic and cultural tensions between anglophone and francophone Canadians, and an essential classic of Canadian literature. An excerpt from the story is now also commemorated in both official languages of Canada on the back of the Canadian five-dollar bill. ... Read more

This book rocked. I read it for a Canadian Literature class, and was so impressed that I will never get rid of it. Too Young To Fight is a book of recollections from some of this country'sbest-loved writers of children's literature. The contributors were children and teenagers during World War II. Though they were far from the fighting and, indeed, too young to participate, they were old enough to remember their impressions and feelings. As they grew up in a tumultuous era, some seemed miraculously untouched while others were profoundly affected. All experienced changes in their lives that shaped the adults they became.

For anyone who did not experience it, this book provides fascinating insight and a tangible link to a formative period in our history. For those who were young themselves at the time, the collection will stir memories and stories long-forgotten. It is our hope that those memories will be shared by people of all ages, and preserved for generations to come.
