Product Description
Angela Carter's writings have been a source of controversy since she was first published in the 1960s. Until her death in 1992 she wrote fantastical fictions and feminist political essays on sex, gender and class. This collection of literary critical studies provides a selection from the many different responses which her works have evoked. Together, they explore most of Carter's major writings and demonstrate a variety of feminist theoretical approaches. ... Read more

Product Description
Angela Carter is best known for her novels, short fiction and journalism, but she also produced a substantial body of writing for media other than the printed page, including five radio plays, two film adaptations, an original television documentary and a number of unrealized scripts for stage and screen. Despite increasing academic interest in Carter's work, these dramatic writings have largely been ignored. In this book, Charlotte Crofts redresses this lack of critical attention by examining Carter's dramatic writings together for the first time (including two unpublished works), giving them a more central position in the Carter canon.

Product Description

Focusing on questions of intertextuality, authorship and representation, Re-visiting Angela Carteroffers a re-examination of one of the twentieth century's most important British writers. While the introductory essay theorizes the politics of Carter's writing, the individual chapters re-visit her relationship to key literary and cultural influences (e.g. Shakespeare, de Sade, the Gothic, Japan) and illuminate neglected ones (e.g. Jean-Luc Godard, Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens, surrealism). This provocative and timely collection both offers new readings of Carter's opus, and contributes to contemporary critical debates concerning gender, postmodernism and intertextual theory.

Product Description
Can art change the world? Or can art produce new knowledge that facilitates radical change in our slowly-evolving communities? If so, then we must ask: how does cultural transformation, whether super or slight, affect our understanding of culture and the world? Operating under the rubric of resistance and reform, "R|Evolutions: Mapping Culture, Community and Change" is a unique scholarly collection that seeks to illuminate current understandings of art, aesthetics, and the revolutionary impulse. The resulting work interrogates intersections between culture and community, revolution and evolution. At the same time, it examines how enduring social issues intertwine with current concerns, such as representations of the body or the book. Multidisciplinary in approach, topics run from subversive uses of the body in Renaissance drama to the effect of the atom bomb on postmodern culture, from Mark Wallinger's Turner Prize-winning performance in a bear suit, to Angela Carter's concept of sexual multiplicity in "The Passion of New Eve". Cutting-edge and politically engaging, "R|Evolutions" will appeal to general readers as well as the specialist, and it is designed for scholars not only interested in issues of cultural production, but also in the evolution of politics and perception over time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars highly readable
This is a very interesting book with a fairly broad appeal. It examines themes in the work of Angela Carter in a way that is very accessible. For the demanding student, there are more useful books - this book does not aim to go into the works in such depth as more specialist texts, but this is mostly a virtue. One can read this without needing specialist knowledge of critical technique, which for me makes it priceless! Recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Seductions in Narrative is a highly original, academic study which provides a critical discourse in which desire, narrative, and subjectivity are explored. Through the critical reading of two novels by contemporary English authors, Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson, the book cleverly assesses the ways in which desire allows the subject to imagine an alternative, utopian location where a narrative of the self, in all its multiplicity and ambiguity, can be effected. This book is unique as general studies on these issues tend to focus on the literature produced over the nineteenth century, but not on contemporary literature. The pieces which examine desire and narrative in contemporary novels tend to do so in the work of post-colonial authors. Specific works on the production of Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson also tend to focus on a somewhat close reading of their novels, but do not make use of their fiction in order to debate specific, poststructuralist issues, as this book successfully undertakes. ... From her relationships to surrealism, from magical realism to her humor, from politics to her grappling with the literary legacies of Virginia Woolf and Marquis de Sade, this distinguished volume of essays commemorates the work of Angela Carter. Here her fellow writers, along with an impressive company of critics, discuss the novels, stories, and polemics that make her one of the most spellbinding authors of her generation. They trace out the signs of her originality, her daring, and her wicked wit, as well as her charm, to produce an indispensable companion to her texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Fun Criticism for Carter Fans
Some GREAT essays in this book. My favorite was Nicole Ward Jouve's "Mother is a figure of Speech..." which I found hilarious and piercing. The variety of essays here demonstrate that reading Carter is half the time about mis(s)-reading her. Some of it you THINK you know what she's doing and some of it just flies right over your head.A MUST READ for anyone thinking of looking into reading Carter critically. ... Read more

Angela Carter was one of the most important and influential writers of our time: a novelist of extraordinary power and a searching critic and essayist. This selection of her writing, which she made herself, covers more than a decade of her thought and ranges over a diversity of subjects giving a true measure of the wide focus of her interests: the brothers Grimm; William Burroughs; food writing, Elizbeth David; British writing: American writing; sexuality, from Josephine Baker to the history of the corset; and appreciations of the work of Joyce and Christina Stead. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a nice read
This collection of short stories, was a very nice one to read. Though I'm usually not fond of anthologies, this one has it's charms. Many well-known female writers, as well as some unknown ones, make this collection of shortstoire a very nice read. For those who feel related to the subject (badgirls) and for those who just like them, this would make a fine book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another must have for Angela Carter fans
This was an excellent collection. The stories are full of strong women, complex characters, dark eroticism, and lush prose.

Like all anthologies there are some stories that are weaker than others but on the whole it is awonderful collection and a must for any Angela Carter fan! ... Read more

Bryony Lavery's new stage adaptation of Angela Carter's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful, fast service
I am very pleased with the book I ordered and received. I buy many used/out of print titles and it is hard to know what you might get. This one came with 5 business days and in great shape for what I paid for it!!!!!! It will make a very nice addition to my library.Thank you so much and I will use this dealer again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection for Kids and Adults, great strong women
This is an excellent book which I highly reccomend. Carter has collected folk tales from a wide variety of sources and cultures which have strong female characters in them. She uses the more orally based tales, ratherthan literary creations, which gives the stories some real zest. Instead ofa collection of didatic stories about good feminist heroines, this is acollection of stories about strong women, both good and bad.Theircraftiness may save their home or allow them to cheat their way to glory. I adore this collection, and reccomend highly to parents who want to givetheir children something to read that doesn't have namby pamby princesseswho wait around to be rescued, or adults who loved fairy tales as a child. ...
