This is a nice little story about a lion cub who loves nothing more than to roar all the time, to his parents' consternation. It is also very well illustrated.I know the author personally, and she really ought to write more children's books.I do not know if this one is still in print, but perhaps you can find it in a library. It's a great one to read to the young children before they go to bed. They will surely want to hear about the loud cub many more times. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Five Little Monkey's Finger Puppets
These are so adorable and are dressed in the same outfits like the monkeys in the book. My grandaughter loves them and carries them around with her all the time. Also purchased the book to go with them and she loves to have this read to her over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Cute!
I always loved reading the 5 little monkeys books with my children when they were little. Now I can also use the puppets and read to my grandchildren. These puppets are so cute and very well made.Worth the price!

4-0 out of 5 stars absolutely adorable
I got these for my 19 month old grandbaby because she already had the book. The monkeys are so cute! They look just like the monkeys in the story and you slip your finger under their shirts to make them move around. Truthfully, they don't look like $20.00 worth, because of their size, but they are cute and I couldn't make them for that amount! We love them!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive
The five monkeys do look like the 5 in the books but are way too small for my kids to actually play with them and make them do the things these 5 monkeys do in the books. I was quite disappointed - was expecting more for $20.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic likeness of the illustrations
Wow...they did a great job of making the puppets really look like the character illustrations in the books. That's not always possible. But in this case, the shapes, proportions and the clothing designs are just about perfect, even down to matching the books' colors in the clothes.

They also seem pretty sturdy and I have to say, the 2 year old they were given to loves them and started "abusing" them right away and all the arms are still miraculously attached! ... Read more

Hmm....just read Alvin Fernald, Master of a Thousand Disguises. Interestingly enough, thisbook is Alvin's Secret Code with Codes beingreplaced by Disguises. Treasure is found near river(same). It was just too many similarities to be a coincidence. Alvin's Secret Code is one of my favoritechildren's books of all time. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series.
Ellen Christelow, Five Little Monkeys Go Shopping (Clarion, 2007)

Christelow's Five Little Monkeys juggernaut rolls along, this time with a book that subtly teaches basic addition and subtraction skills as the FLM and their mom shop for school clothes. The book abandons the rhyme scheme of the previous entries in the series, which mmakes for a refreshing change. Very likable entry in the series; it keeps getting better as it goes on. *** ½

I have read other books in this series with my three year old daughter, but this one really takes the monkey counting thing to the next level. Some monkeys go away, other monkeys join the group, and before you know it your little one is learning to add and subtract without a formal lesson!I always had to preface the book by telling my daughter that of course kids should never go where a grownup cannot see them in the store. ... Product Description

In this informative companion to the popular "What Do Authors Do?" author/illustrator Christelow turns her attention to the visual side of creating a picture book. Employing her relaxed style and trademark humor, she shows how an illustrator develops a book from rough sketches to finished artwork, following two artists as they illustrate different versions of "Jack and the Beanstalk." Christelow answers the questions often posed by children, such as, "What materials do you use?" and "Is it hard to be an illustrator?" and reveals that the uniqueness of each book depends on many creative choices . . . and a lot of painstaking work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great job description
Eileen Christelow has written a wonderful book depicting the working habits of an illustrator. Not only did she write it, she also illustrated the book, "What Do Illustrators Do?," which can serve as a kind of job description.

Her story actually begins on the back cover with a conversation between an illustrator's dog and her writer-friend's cat. Actually, the illustrator in the book could be Ms Christelow since both are artist/writers. (I don't know who the male writer is.) Now look at the front cover. The two writers are partitioned and asking a book question. He: How can I make this giant look really big? She: Should I draw with a pencil? pen? brush? (Note: Both are picture book writers, however his pictures are created by a professional illustrator hired by his publishing company, whereas she creates her own.)

The title page shows a pencil sketch of a building. The next page shows the sketch colored in. Through the windows on one side is the writer, on the other is the writer/illustrator, with the point of showing how each page can be creatively used.

Now the problem: "Suppose ... two illustrators each decided to illustrate Jack and the Beanstalk. Would they tell the story the same way? Would they draw the same kind of pictures?" Curious Leonard (cat) and nosy Scooter (dog) are peeking to see what their humans are doing and are shooshed away. Now they can get together and complain (mildly) about their humans and tell each other what the humans are creating--a wonderful narrative device, by the way, because in summarizing the story for Scooter, Leonard is really telling it to children-readers, who love animal stories.

The reader also learns that picture books have 32 pages, so the illustrator must carefully determine what he wants his limited number to be. We learn about the dummy (no, Scooter, not you!) and sketches and point of view for EACH sketch.

The illustrator must think of the design of the page, i.e. where each item will be placed on the page, how it will work in that location, or not work. The writer guy says a surprise should come with each page. Sometimes writers use family members, including pets, to pose for their pictures to get a more realistic nuance for the scene. Both Leonard and Scotter and Jacqueline, the woman's daughter, and the writer himself have significant places in the story.

Scooter (the dog) worries why anyone would buy two versions of the same story (after all, the writer/illustrator is his mealticket). That's when Leonard (the cat) explains how each book is different in the making. What font will be used? Which illustrator? Which art technique? Coloring technique? Paper changes the look of the story. Which paper? Exactly which colors? For what look?

At the end the writer/illustrator and Scooter (the dog) and the male writer (whose book was illustrated) and Leonard (the cat) and the woman's daughter celebrate the publication of the two books and all their hard work and each one's hand and paw in the story.

"What Do Illustrators Do?" is a must-have for a school library and class libraries, especially of teachers who emphasize writing and even "publish" books written as a joint class effort. It's a worthwhile book for any child to show just what goes into creating that book in her hands (or your hands).

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!
I wanted a book that taught my 6 year old daughter how to draw. But I was disappointed with the "How to" books out there for children. They all seemed to give too much information.

This book solved my problem. It's a picture book that teaches! It talks about perspective, styles of drawing, taking characters/situations into consideration, placement, emphasis, etc. All with humor and simple instruction.

I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars humorous look at illustrators
This books shows what illustrators do by following two illustrators both working on Jack and the Beanstalk but coming up with very different results. A friendly cat and dog also add to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Do Illustrators Do?
Outstanding descriptions and illustrations describing how two illustrators can get very different results, even though they were both working on the same story.(Jack and the Beanstalk) Wonderful teaching resource. Highly recommend this for K through the 4th grade; also recommended readingfor teachers and parents.Contains excellent color illustrations. ... Read more

I've been speaking in Spanish to the little ones (grand-daughters) since they were small and they understand a good bit. These stories --- from a source they love, the 5 Little Monkeys -- definitely appeal to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
This is a nice English/Spanish book that can be read in either language. It goes beyond the basic color, shapes, etc. for basic Spanish. There are 3-4 sentences for each page; 28 pages or so. The monkey are bored so the Mom has them clean for their Grandma who is coming. The last task is to go pick berries; the monkey's make a mess through the house they just cleaned just before Grandma arrives. It is a nice story that you can talk about with your kids & maybe they won't make a mess in you house =-) Great to get some additional Spanish vocab and make it fun to read. ... Read more

Product Description

Mama’s out dancing, and Lulu, the babysitter, is in charge. The Five Little Monkeys are supposed to go to bed, but they convince Lulu there’s time for just one game of hide-and-seek first . . . and then another, and another . . . until they discover the ultimate hiding place. Lulu is frantic; where can those monkeys be?
Vibrant, expressive illustrations in Eileen Christelow’s signature style accompany a catchy rhymed text that’s great for reading aloud. The refrain invites children to join in; as Lulu counts to 10, 24, and finally 104, young listeners will count along with her. And what little monkey can resist the idea of mischief at bedtime?

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Little Monkeys Play Hide and Seek
The Five Little Monkeys are my grandchildren's favorite books. They enjoy them so much!Every Sunday when I visit with them, they want to sit down and read the stories, every one of them! My daughter-in-law says that they bring the books to her throughout the week and she has to read them, too!I still need to purchase the Five Little Monkeys with Nothing To Do.

Ellen Christelow, Five Little Monkeys Play Hide and Seek (Clarion, 2004)

Five little monkeys, a babysitter, and rhyme. Mama's gone out dancing, and babysitter Lulu is enticed to play hide-and-seek with the FLM long after bedtime as Christelow imparts basic counting to her readers. Cute as always, and a Christelow original, which are always stronger than the adapted entries in the series. ***

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book - Toddler Favorite
I've got a 2 yr old that just thinks hide & seek is the greatest game ever. She was also already a fan of the Five Little Monkeys from the Jumping on the Bed song & (of course) the book. We checked this out at the library and it's been a huge hit. I've had to read it about 16 times in the last 3 days. Of course, I'm now here to buy our own copy! Great, colorful illustrations and cute, repetitive rhymes really hold my daughter's attention. She's even started saying "I see some fingers..." etc when we play hide & seek. For the mom who's 18 month old isn't interested...just wait!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't really capture interest
I thought my 18 month daughter would enjoy this book, especially since she was a fan of the "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on a Bed". But this book never captured her interest. I have never gotten past the 3rd page... till this day, I still don't know how the story ends!

5-0 out of 5 stars good counting book
Listen, my kids love the "little monkeys" but I used this one to teach my "almost" 4 yr old to count up to and past 100. As reader you might be tempted to gloss over the counting but if your kid is ready this is a great way to teach them to count. Add it to your library so you'll have when they are ready. I was amazed none of the other reviews emphasized this point, so I just had to add my two cents. ... Read more

Third entry in Christelow's wildly successful series has the Monkey family getting ready for Grandma Bessie's arrival. Each time the FLM say they're bored, mama gives them something else to do to get ready for Bessie's arrival. All well and good, until mama puts one request in just the wrong order... another entry where Christelow abandoned the rhyme scheme of the other books, which does each a service when it happens. My first graders fell in love Ezra and Betty. Their friendship crosses all age levels. The humor of using dogs to keep warm was quickly understood the children. This selection provided us opportunity to discuss settings and in-depth character anaylsis as Ezra changes from our first meeting through to the end of the story. I highly recommend this text for use in any classroom. It's a new favorite of our room!
