4-0 out of 5 stars Ballhawk
Christopher has produced an early reader for children to begin reading chapter books (something they are usually very excited about). This one centers on a 9-year old boy trying to become a great hitter to win his father's love. The whole time he doesn't realize that he is an excellent outfielder and his father would love him anyway.A touching story and quick read.

Vocabulary is kept basic, and chapters are kept short. However, the amount of baseball knowledge and terminology is incredible. This book may appeal to many children due to the topic, but if they are not prepared for the explanations of baseball plays, they will lose interest.

Why 4 stars?:
This book was well constructed as far as vocabulary and chapter length to be a beginning chapter book. However, I had to take off one star due to the amount of baseball vernacular that is used and may not be understood by all children. It gets very heavy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey+magic+book= great book
I think the book Ice Magic was a great book because hockey and magic in one book is an extremely smart idea. My three favorite things are hockey and magic and reading, so I knew the book Ice Magic was right for me just by looking at the title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ice Magic
Ice Magic is a book about Pie Pennelli who plays hockey, but has oversized skates. Terry Mason is his other problem because when he falls on the ice, and misses a play Terry Mason always yells at him. His nieghbors found this toy hockey that they think is magic because whenever they play the game that is what happens in Pie's real game the next day. Terry teases Pie about how they think that the toy hockey game is magic. In the last couple of toy hockey games bad things are going to happen to Pie. In his last game of the season Pie's neighbors warn him that the second period is going to be bad. In the second period Pie's skates fall apart, and Terry's cat jumps onto the ice in the second period. When Pie's neighbors found the toy hockey game, a note was attached to it that said," Beware what happens on a real rink first, Repeats here not, for fate, Promises that, as true as bubbles burst, The magic will dissipate" which that whatever happens on a real rink first it will happen on this rink too, and then the magic will be gone. When Terry came over tothe twins house he brought his cat and the cat jumped onto the toy hockey game, and that was the sign that the magic was now gone. by Aaron Havard

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not one of Christopher's better books
This sports book by the prolific Christopher is a bit unusual in that it combines action in hockey with the uncertainty of magic. Pie Pennelli is a young hockey player with a problem; his skates are too large, slowing him down on the ice. His brother was a hockey player so he is wearing the skates that his brother used. Jody and Jolie are his friends and they have an indoor hockey game that is unusual. When they play it, the events of their game become the actual events of Pie's game.
While Pie has some moments on the ice, he also fails on occasion, facts always pointed out by his teammate Terry.Over time, the problems between Pie and Terry boil over, but they eventually patch things up and begin to play together outside the hockey arena. When Terry's cat wanders out on the ice during a game and then jumps on the indoor game, the magic spell is broken and there is no longer a correlation between what happens in the indoor game and on the ice.
This is not one of the better sports books by Matt Christopher; it is convoluted and occasionally disjointed. The combination of magic and hockey is not well integrated; everything is closed up at the end in a sudden manner without a climactic event or situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars magic of ice
My name is Greg I read a book call Ice Magicit was about hockey and kid name pie and hell like magic .he though a hockey game was magic. Also what happen in his toy game will happen in pie hockey game .A kid on pie team all ways made fun of him .his team was ok but they lost a of gameby one point .at the end of the book the kid that would make fun of hi becomes his friend. I like this book because it about hockey and I like to play hockey.

This is a exciting book that i would recommend to kids 8 to 10.I give this book 3 stars because I think it is for younger readers. It was still a pretty good book to read, but it was a very easy book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dakota's Delightful Review
I like this awesome, and perfect book!Megan , spoiled, is 15 and has a delightful life. In the town below, she notices the water rising. Though she's used to small spring floods this one will be rising up the steps like never before in 1889 where Pensysilvania was changed forever that dreadful day.Ella stupidly did not listen to her brother's warning until he had to yell in the shockingly rough tone. Then her dad was coming back she yelled, " Go back!" She then looked at the direction her father was pointing at. There a massive wave was coming towards her.Megan saw the worst, bam just like that! The whole city drowned just like that! Megan, cold on a soggy old mattress trapped, finds herself with a young man and gets rescued by a man who now is heading to a hill really close by. They were making their way up the shore line when all the sudden Mrs. Alderson exclaimed, " No, I'm too heavy, I'll drown!"Darkness now covered the wet vast land, but they found a boy anda house that held survivors for the past hour. Now an hour later, she talks to a actress who was in the same situation.Megan talked to Brian and he said, " There is a fire!" Tom is still not back. Now Megan cleaned the boy.Tom is back .Daylight roams the devastated land. Megan, kind and good natured, was carefully following Tom and Brian's orders, went to watch the boy, Megan was changed in many ways.Megan , ready for anything, saw the dead bodies. Meagan's dog was foundunderneath a house. She saw the fury in Brian's eyes. She could no longer hold the dispirited angry soul that burst like a shattered window with the soul buried in side that broken window. Will she find her family? She's safe and sound. She was a furious gal who twisted and turned to get away from Brian's grasp. Then she got away from Brian. Then he came back and told her some bad news, " My parents are dead."Are Megan's? My friends and I recommend that you read this awesome book about The Terrible Wave.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine
This book The Hockey Machine is about a kid named Steve. After an ordinary game Steve gets kidnaped but he doesn't know it. The kidnapers[Kenneth] took him to a nice dinner. Kenneth takes Steve to what looks like a hockey camp. After a few weeks, Steve wants to get out and go home. He tries to escape, but guards catch him. He then has to sit in a cell for 48 hours. Now he tries to escape again, and he gets to a phone booth. Then Steve remembers his uncle lives in the area, so he calls him. His uncle finds him immediately. Next Steve finally goes home.
I thought this was one of the best books because I like mystery books.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine a review by Adam
By: Matt Christopher

Have you ever been away from your parents or someone you loved for a long period of time? Well if you have I bet you don't like it. In the book "The Hockey Machine" by Matt Christopher, the protagonist, Steve, plays ice hockey for hockey team called the Bobtails. Steve lives with his parents, or used to anyway. One day after hockey, just as Steve was leaving, he heard a voice say, "Hi Steve, I'm Mark," he announced. Steve did not know who this was.
Then Mark added, "Me and my older friend have been watching you play hockey". " Come on he is in the car waiting to meet you." Marks older friend is Kenneth. Kenneth is a coach of a ice-hockey team in Indianapolis. When Steve and Kenneth met they talked, and after that Kenneth asked Steve if he wanted to go and get something to eat for lunch. Steve told him no because he had to get home.Kenneth said that he would take him home right after they ate. Without saying anything Mark pushed Steve in. Steve got in and Steve, Mark, Kenneth, and the driver all went out to lunch.

On the ride back to Steve's house, Steve fell asleep. When Steve awoke he was still in the car. Then he asked in a worried voice, " Where are we going?"
Kenneth answered, "To Indianapolis."
Steve shrieked, "What, you said that you would take me home right after lunch." Kenneth ruled, "You're going to play on my hockey team, the Chariots.
I already asked your parents when you were asleep."
Steve said "Prove it." Kenneth pulled out a letter and gave it to Steve.
The letter was typed out. Steve thought in his head that anybody could have typed this letter. After Steve was finished reading the letter he finally questioned, " how come I didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to my parents?" No one answered.
As soon as they reached the airport they got on to an airplane to fly to Indianapolis. After they got there Steve met the hockey team. They stayed in their own hotel. After Steve met the guys he asked Mark if Mark would talk to Kenneth because Steve was already feeling home sick. Mark told him "quit thinking about your home. It just makes you more worried."
Then he advised "all of the guys and I did." Steve just bowed his head in sadness, and all he could do was think about home! If you've ever felt like Steve has, all you want to do is go home and see your parents. See what happens to Steve if you get the book The Hockey Machine

Outstanding. Unbelievable. Mindblowing.

These are just a few of the words used to describe the talents of LeBron James. He was a sensation in his early days playing AAU ball in Akron, Ohio-and continued to amaze through his four years as a high school phenomenon. Now going into his fifth year as a star of the Cleveland Cavaliers, he is touted as the best player in basketball today. And for good reason: his dunks are monstrous, his no-look passes are things of beauty, his three-pointers seem effortless. But even more importantly, he is that one-of-a-kind superstar whose main goal isn't to rack up the stats-it's to make his team better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wingman on Ice
For our book reivew I read the book "Wingman On Ice," by Matt Christoper. It's about a boy named Todd Baker who gets a brand new hockey stick for christmas.Todd doesn't think he deserves the stick because of the way he had been playing,so he puts it in his closet. He practices for along time, but still does not think he deserves the stick. This story takesplace in present time. It was the last day of the season at Mana rink,Todd's game had really improved, now he finally thinks he deserves thestick, but does not have it with him. If you want to know what happensnext, you will have to read the exciting book, "Wingaman On Ice."If I had to rate this book from a scale of one to ten, I would give thisbook an eleven it is so good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Reluctant Reader Approved

Every day after school Will is bored to tears. How can he spend his days? His mom and dad work and leave him at home bored. Will tries out for 3 sport's teams at school, but fails. Their suggestions don't solve his problem.
He learns there is a mountain bike club. The best thing about the mountain bike club is you don't have to try out to join. Many of the club members are popular, too. He finally has a way to spend his afternoons other than watching television and playing video games.
A subplot exposes peer pressure and Will overcoming it. A rift between mountain bikers and hikers and horseback riders is revealed and resolved.
The vocabulary that is used is geared to middle grade readers. The subject matter will appeal to boys and reluctant readers. The pace and prose will sustain a child's interest. I recommend this book.

Mountain Bike Mania by Matt Christopher is about a boy named Will who loves to watch TV. Will loves to eat candy-covered popcorn while he waits for his mom to get home.
When Will goes to school, he gets bullied a lot. Then Will discovers a mountain biking club. Then Will asks his mom for a new mountain bike.
I liked the book because I have a mountain bike at home. There was a lot of biking action. I would recommend this book because it was interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Winner
This book is about a kid (Will Mathews) who is very lousy and in't good at any sports. But one day he goes hiking only to see three mountain bikers that are having a blast. After Will saw them he jouined the club that they were in and soon was having as much fun as the people they saw.Unfortunatly his friend hates to mountain bike and that startes a whole mess that no one knows if it will be over. This book was so good that I read on my own.(I don't like to read that much)If you are looking for a good book and love sports (speceialy mountain biking) then I strongly, absolutly recomend this book to all yong sports lovers for this is the book for YOU!Although the book is not fully about mountain biking(I do wish that it had) it was still a great book.Of course their are probably better books out their that have your name on them and some of them might be one of Matt Christerphor (the aothore) ... Crackerjack Halfback

The book I read was Crackerjack Halfback. The author is Matt Christopher. A boy on the football team named Freddie Chase is having a problem. Freddie's problem is that he is afraid to tackle. Freddie knows he has to suck up his fear or he will lose his position. Now they are in a position and need to win and Freddie missed some tackles. Coach Sears knows he has to take him out of the game. Now Freddie has to try hard to gain his spot back. Wonder if he can over come that fear. I would recommend this book to kids that are worried about fears or problems they have and want to over come their problem or fear. Also kids that are truly in love with football.

Crackerjack Halfback
This is a story about a boy named Freddie that can not tackle in football.
The main character is Freddie he wants to play football. So he wants to play for the Sandpipers. He goes to practice and the coach finds out that he has a weakness. He and his mom enter duce themselves to the coach and coaches son so they talk for awhile then the coach said does Freddie want to go see a football film tomorrow night. Freddie said sure I would like to. So Freddie gets home from school and gets ready to go. The coach is here said Freddie so he gets in the car and on the way to the movie they were on the road and on the road there was a semi truck. And the coach was taking a short cut and the truck was going fast and almost ran into the coach and ran him off the road and the coach ran into a fence and the car went into the river. So they were in the river then they all wake up and water was coming into the car and someone saw them in the river then they said im going to call for help.
Then they are at there last game so it all started that Freddie was playing linebacker he wasn't playing so good so the coach said Freddie come sit out so he did and the coach said I know you can hit so we are going to put you in the next play and the coach said it's next play so go so it was next play and they were running it so he flew right past Freddie and Freddie had to get him he ran and he got the tackle and that was the end of the 4th ot and the Sandpipers.
