I give this book my highest recommendation.It tells a story which the United States of America MUST hear.It calls many of us to come out of our ignorance and look at the historical facts.It is probably more timely today than when it was first written.

The item description CLEARLY states that the foreword was written by Cisneros. Nowhere does it say that she is the author. Also, the picture of the cover CLEARLY states the same thing. Plus, you don't request a refund from amazon by posting a complaint in the review section. Geez.

The book, "The Future is Mestizo" is NOT written BY Sandra Cisneros.Thats is false advertisement!!!The book is written by some biased priest, who has a good idea, however, Sandra Cisneros did not write the book.She wrote the foreword.

I am just doing the story eleven in this book 'short stories for students',



"It's not... thats not... not mine" Rachelle trys to tell her teacher mrs. price after she put that ugley red sweater on her desk.
Sandra Cisneros's Eleven is not just about a girl who is upset about a sweater. i think it is really about a girl who is an outsider and wants to fit in and doesn't have very many friends, but does have her own unique way of thinking.

I think Rachelle is an outsider because it seems like she might get picked on for exsample when that girl says "It's Rachelles" she is too shy to stick up for herself.

I think Rachelle has her own unique way of thinking because she thinks that she has all of those years inside of her still 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. And it is her birthday and she does not feel eleven.

All in all i think eleven is just about a girl who wants people to understand that sometimes she needs to let her two year old tears out. Just like everybody else does.

At the beginning of her book, Caramelo, my first mistake was thinking that Sandra Cisneros planned to take me down an interesting path, where understanding would be fascinating, but not particularly difficult. I have, after all, been trying to grasp what it might be like to grow up on both sides of the border, from the POV of someone born in America, for many years.

When the grandmother declared that Lalita's hair be cut without even the slightest concern for the girl's wishes, however, I knew that there would be no meeting of the minds between me and that old woman. Even after I began to believe I understand the grandmother, at least a little bit, I could not bring myself to like her.

Lala, on-the-other-hand, won my heart from the beginning. She became everything I thought I knew about Mexican girls and many things I did not. I loved her fiercely with a protective zeal.

Sandra Cisneros' text is full of life, much of it tragic, with surprising humorous insight that often submerged my mind in consternation. But, the one thing I could count on during this reading was challenge. "Caramelo" continuously challenged me to consider ways other than my own, to consider cultures I don't necessarily understand, and to consider that I have much to learn.

This review would not be finished without recording admiration for its history of the rebozo; a fascinating story within itself.Also remarkably insightful is the four page chronology about America's changing, complicated immigration perspectives, and its equally confusing relationship with the citizens of Mexico.

This book is an excellent resource for teachers.After reading this book to them, I had them write about one of their family traditions.THis book really inspired their creative writing skills!Many students could relate to some of the traditions in this story.It made them feel special and it caused a lot of verbal interaction between students.It made the students want to learn about each other's cultures!

My 5 year old daughter loves this book. She enjoys both the brief stories accompanying each illustration, and examining each illustration and looking closely at the fascinating details. The text describes a large family and their many traditions that are interesting whether or not you are familiar with Mexican-American traditions and customs. Although we don't read Spanish, we like having the text in Spanish available for us to learn the words and phrases.

I have read many children's books; this book however, isn't really a book for reading. It's greatest attribute are it's pictures. It does have a small descriptive paragraph opposite each picture in both English and Spanish, therefore making the book accessible to many different children. It is a great multicultural book; you can learn about the culture and traditions of a Mexican American family. It is a good book to develop multiculturalism and can be used in many ways in the classroom.

This book is a must have for ALL classrooms, but especially Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms! I use it all year long! My students LOVE it so much that I bought them each their own copy for Día del niño this year. We use it as a writing prompt, they connect text to self and compare and contrast. The illustrations are beautiful. This year we used it for our yearly diorama project. Instead of the children choosing random books to do a diorama on, they chose the cuadro that most spoke to them and their family experience, and did their diorama on that. They also did a beautiful piece of polished writing comparing a family memory with that cuadro. This is my favorite book to use in the classroom, and many adults love to receive it as a gift as well. It brings back beautiful memories to all ages. This is truly a treasure. I cannot reccomend it highly enough! It is also great to leave for a substitute because it is bilingual and you know you cannot count on all subs speaking Spanish! The students never get tired of reading it or writing about it!

After a total of six days, i was able to accomplish my task in reading the book " The House On Mango Street." The simplicity of words that was described by the author,Sandra Cinsneros, made it for myself, as the reader, to have a batter understanding of what was occoring in every chapter of the book. I liked how there was a large amout of usage with both similies and metaphores while objects, places and people were being compared and described.While thinking back on my own child hood, i was easily able to connect my feelings towards the main character, Esperanza. See, she was brought up in a poor family and ended up moving into a small house, not fitting everyone in her family. I was able to compare to this because when I was about seven years old, my parents were not doing so well with money and we had moved into a two bedroom apartment. I felt like the poorest first grader at my school. But I grew to learn that we have to live with what we got, and thats exactly what Esperanza did. She gained both good and bad friends. Another reason why I did enjoy reading this, is because there was a lot of feelings that were expressed from the members in the household.
