Product Description
From snapshots to formal portraits, photography offers a fascinating record of the complex interplay of attitudes toward Native Americans in the United States. In this first major book to present a comprehensive look at photographs of Indians by both Native and Anglo Americans, from 1840 to the present, we are offered a compelling array of images reproduced with exacting respect for the physical qualities of the photograph as a document. Alfred Bush and Lee Mitchell help us see these photographs not only as historical artifacts but as rich texts that describe their makers as tellingly as their subjects. More than three hundred images relate an important tale of the intrusion of technology into the traditional life of the American Indian, and the political uses both Native Americans and Anglo Americans found for the photograph. These photographs reveal the many agendas of both photographers and American Indians. From images pandering to popular stereotypes to ones that catch troubling realities, these photographs encourage us to consider the photographic enterprise from various perspectives, including those of Native Americans. Contradicting the common notion that Native American photographers are a recent phenomenon, Indians make their appearance as photographers in this work as early as the 1880s with portrayals as varied and conflicted as any by Anglo Americans. The exciting dynamics among multiple American cultures encountering each other through art and technology is masterfully documented here. The text provides authoritative dating of the photographs, biographies of the photographers, and an extensive bibliography. This is a treasurehouse for readers with interests in Native Americans and their history and in the history of photography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A COMPELLING CHRONICLE OF OUR HISTORY
Thanks to Alfred Bush and Lee Mitchell for a compelling 150 year photographic chronicle of the history of American Indians.

This volume is the ofspring of an exhibition of the same title that was held at Princeton University, and it's the next best thing to having been there.

The book is the first to hold photographs by american Indian photographers, many of which have not been reproduced before. It's a significant documentary record. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy
This book will not help to pass the exam. The questions are not even similar to the exam's questions. Some things in the book are over explained, that you could think that the reader never have seen VB before, and other more complicated topics are just touched.
I would not recommend this book, not only because of waisted money, but because of waisted time.

1-0 out of 5 stars incomplete syllabus, bad questions
This book explains VB 6 in simple language so that even the idiot can understand VB 6 features. However, the content is simple as well and can't help you to pass the exam.

Try the exam guide by Howard Hawhee. I'm notsure whether it is the best, but it is second to none so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase This Book
Do not purchase this book.I have completed seven chapters and have come across two clear errors in the review questions.Readers attempting to prepare for the Visual Basic 6.0 Distributed Applications exam must haveaccurate information in the text AND accurate answers to the reviewquestions.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY
This book has too many obvious errors.Yes, it will help you but why pay for a book that has poor publishing and proofreading. If thepublisher/author would like to contact me ... please post a comment here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Price Theory by Allen
This is an excellent work on the theory of price analysis and
its implementation. There is good coverage of the purely
competitive markets, as well as imperfect markets. The relevant
equilibrium prices are demonstrated graphically throughout
the text under a variety of assumptions. Marginal utility
curves and consumer demand are covered with a fair amount of
detail. Monopolistic and other forms of price competition
are demonstrated. Average, total , marginal revenue and
marginal cost concepts are developed utilizing classic graphical
depictions. Diminishing marginal utility is demonstrated
utilizing bar graphs above the x-axis for the existence of
utility and below the x-axis for disutility. The book is an
excellent supplement to the standard coursework in macro and
micro-economics collegiate courses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Call it Pacific
This was another World War II books that I got as a child from the collection of an uncle who died young. I have the original edition published in 1944 which I probably never read until now.I see that the lastest printing cost $37.The book was published in London and my uncle bought it in Aukland, New Zeeland in 1944 when he was on R&R between battles. The book was written by Clark Leea correspondent for the AP who spent a lot of years in Japan, China and otherAsian hotspots prior to World War II. He got out of China and made it to the Phillipines just prior to Dec. 7th.After spending several months there reporting on the fighting he came to realize that things were not going to end well.So he decided to get out while he could and made an amazing hazardous journey by boat to Australia one step ahead of he Japanese. He was primarily a newspaperman not a book writer.(I think this was his only book)It seems to be written like an extremely long newspaper article sort of crossed with a personal diary. It was a very interesting read as he was really a guy on the ground who experienced many things that few others had. I would certainly recommendthis book to anyone with an interest in World War II in the Pacific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read
Clark Lee's book on the early (1940-1943) war in the Pacific Ocean is very interesting. It does end rather abruptly in 1943. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WORKING STIFFS AND BCOM TEACHERS:YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND IS HERE!
Among corporate writing consultants, Lee Clark Johns is the real article, and so is her book THE WRITING COACH.The same pioneering spirit that drove her to co-found the Association of Professional Communication Consultants drives this lean, workbook-style guide, off the beaten path of content-centricity and onto the heady road of strategic thinking.Like Volkswagen's, her motto seems to be "Drivers wanted."

I love THE WRITING COACH because it recognizes that writing is a skill, not a content area.As we look over her shoulder at real-world samples, we see how the good writers do it--their organization, diction, formatting.Instead of spouting unhelpful advice like "Write in a language your reader understands,"Johns takes us inside the labs, offices, and boardrooms to show us how many readers a single message can have, what languages they share and don't share, and how to reach them all in a single document.

Johns can take us there because she has been there, as a consultant for 25 years.Students, their brains clogged with academic-speak, hear the difference. Her streamlined, muscular style practices what it preaches.Even if, like mine, your department mandates another textbook, THE WRITING COACH makes a great, affordable supplement.I've ordered the books for next semester's BCOM students as, among other things, a collection of authentic sample documents and exercises I won't have to forage for or try to fake myself--and a book they will certainly want to keep and use. Thanks, Lee, for a smart, empowering guide I plan to wear completely out.

5-0 out of 5 stars One the best guides for business writers
This large-format book, by a leading writing consultant, is dedicated "to everyone who `writes for a living'-which means almost all working adults." It's on the short list of recommended resources in my book The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication, and supplements that book very well. I recommend it highly to all business writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone
The introduction to The Writing Coach is inspiring.Lee Clark Johns is enthusiastic about her subject. She treats her subject with the care and skill of a fine novelist. She involves the reader in the subject matter from the very beginning and then leads the way to a great adventure for the business writing community. She adds just enough humor in sample writings to keep smiles on student faces. For those of us who are involved in the honorable profession of teaching English, an enthusiastic and inspired author becomes a silent team teaching member.Lee Clark Johns is just such an author in The Writing Coach.

The material is pertinent to current business trends.Exercises present examples of documents from real world, office situations (some of them are quite funny and others leave the reader aghast, see page 13 memo) and challenge the learner to rewrite/reorganize the document to meet more current standards or more appropriate standards. These exercises are excellent in that they present learners with what not to do and then lead them to what they should do in a business-writing situation

The Writing Coach content is current and up to date.It addresses issues with which the business community is confronted every day, and it demonstrates the techniques necessary to conquer these issues with aplomb.

The Writing Coach has something for everyone and would definitely be an asset to my teaching library.I am pleased to have had the opportunity to meet Lee Clark Johns in the pages of this wonderful book. ... Read more
