Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tasmania, given its small geographic size and population has a strong literary culture. Historically Tasmania provides an interesting literary background with visits from early European explorers such as the Dutchman Abel Tasman, the Frenchmen Bruni d'Entrecasteaux and Marion du Fresne and then the English explorers Matthew Flinders and George Bass. The colonisation of Tasmania was characterised by deteriorated relations with the indigenous Aboriginal people and a harsh convict heritage. These early elements of Tasmanian history are found both in the large number of colonial sandstone buildings and in the place names. ... Read more

It brings thoughts of cowled monks, of sleek abbots, of chancels, tombstones, organ-playing, and the " De profundis." To me, it means pints of ale, " tobacco parliaments," Haymarket plays, Bohemianism, " jolly good fellows everyone !" and " We won't go home till morning!" It means lobster salads at unholy hours, "doing" of bills, lack of the current coin of the realm, and general abandonment to the feast of reason and the flow of soul! In a word, my Austin Friars is a totally different place to yours. My Austin Friars is a hostel, a tavern, an eating-house, a spot sacfed to the memory of the jolliest six months that I ever spent. My Austin Friars is situate in the city of Melbourne -- in the heart of the city of Melbourne -- within " easy distance of the parks and places of amusement," as the advertisements say. Never mind whereabout this central situation was; suffice it to say, that there was a cab-stand opposite the door, and that the Theatre Royal was not a hundred miles away. The " Friars " was not a first-class family hotel; it could not compare with the "Great Western" or " Meurice's " in London, with the "Astor House " in New York, or even with the " Port Phillip Club " or " Scott's " in Melbourne. But, such ... ... Read more

From the supplier: Scholars must take into account international, economic, performer, manager, and consumer influences on Australian colonial theater when attempting to define the genre. The Australian Drama Project at the University of Queensland restricts Australian colonial plays to those that premiered in Australia. This definition removes possible cultural and present-day biases but fails to take into account all of the factors involved in creating a play. It focuses too much on authorship. Some problems related to determining authorship are illustrated by research on the early theatrical work of Marcus Clarke.
