5-0 out of 5 stars It's Long Overdue!
Finally an academic tome on one of America's most beloved children's authors. Pflieger discusses and analyzes all of Cleary works as well asgiving some biographical material about her. Academic journals, popularpress magazines and newspapers about Cleary's novels are all cited in orderto provide other people's reviews and analysis of Cleary's works. This bookis a must for anyone who has read any of Cleary's novel and would beparticularly useful for college students who are thinking of becomingEnglish teachers, librarians or Ph.D. students in children's literature.Unlike many academic writers, Pflieger's writing style is clear and easy tounderstand which is a nice contrast to all the boring, pedantic academicwritings which are often employed when analyzing children's literature. Iwould like to see included in the next edition, an analysis of Cleary'snewest work Ramona's World, as it was not inserted in this edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ramona and her mother
Ramona and her mother is a good book it is about a little girl and her mother and they are having a party and having fun. they had a lot to clean up but I loved that book it was funny and crazy. I had read it for a book report and it gave me an idea for what I had to write a full page about it

4-0 out of 5 stars Down the Drain it Goes
I read the book "Ramona and Her Mother." This book is "OK" but I personally don't think it is one of Beverly Cleary's best. Ramona and Her Mother is an on and off kind of story. I would, however, give it an 8 for wanting to know what comes next or in other words, not wanting to put the book down.
One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Ramona squeezes out a brand-new tube of toothpaste. Sometimes I feel like doing the same, but I have more self control than Ramona. I'm not going to tell you anymore scenes from the book because I want you to find out for yourself. ... Read more

Petey's in no hurry to go to sleep, but he loves being put to bed -- the bath, the books, the hugs, the chases, and, best of all, the story of the day he was born. One night, with Mommy and Daddy too sleepy to go on, Petey tells his own version of the day he came stomping into the world, cowboy boots and all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great story for bedtime!
Boy, is this ever cute!Cleary does it again with such amusement - telling a story of a little guy who loves to prolong going to bed. After settling in, he wants to hear the "baby story," basically, which is the story on the way to his birth. His parents are tired so Petey gets to tell the story this time, complete with full, exaggerated embellishments. My personal favorite is how Petey describes his father being bad by going too fast in his car and having his mother promise to make daddy be good to the police officer so that he doesn't have to go to jail because he would miss his football games on television. That was great! After the story, Petey put his parents to sleep and he toddles off, grabs a whole box of cookies and eats them on his parents' bed before he nods off to dreamland. The best line is the last - he describes how he feels safe, warm and full sleeping on his parent's bed, covered in crumbs!Very cute, quite long, though so don't think this will be a quick read and off to bed. It's quite sweet and will definitely become a favorite in your house too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time for bed!!!
Kids love to prolong bedtime as long as possible.Petey is no different. One night before bed after prayers, water and checking for monsters Petey wants a bedtime story. His mom and Dad both read him a book. Then he wants his Dad to tell the story of the night Petey was born. His Dad sugests that since Petey knows the story by heart maybe he should tell it.Petey tells the story and adds lots to it as he goes.Soon his paretns are asleep instead of Petey. This is a very cute bedtime story for little children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Petey's Bedtime Story
This story amused my 3 & 5 year olds to tears, especially the story of his birth. The Hospital scenes, Petey's imagination, and the vibrantly funny illustrations were a perfect match. The colorful but simplestoryline read quickly, humored the young as well as the old. This book isa real must for 3-6 year olds... and 30+... ... Product Description

This wonderful Ramona Box Set, by Beverly Cleary, contains four books: Henry Huggins, Henry and Ribsy, Henry and Beezus, and Henry and the Clubhouse.Henry Huggins

Henry Huggins had been wishing for some excitement in his life -- but not this kind. There's no way he wants to stand on the school stage in his pajamas -- and be kissed by an eighth-grade girl!Henry soon finds out that this is only the beginning of his exciting new life.Henry and Ribsy

Henry Huggins is trying his hardest to keep Ribsy out of trouble for a wholemonth. But Ribsy doesn't make it easy for Henry. What can one boy do with a dog who steals a policeman's lunch and an ice cream cone from Ramona Quimby?Henry and Beezus

All Henry Huggins can think about is owning a bicycle, especially since that big show-off Scooter McCarthy has one. Selling bubble gum to all the kids at school brings Henry plenty of trouble but very little money for his bike fund. Can a girl really help Henry earn the money for a bicycle? Henry's friend Beezus helps him turn the most humiliating situation of his life into a real business success.Henry and the Clubhouse

Henry Huggins has a lot of good ideas when he first begins his paper route, especially the idea to build a clubhouse. Henry and his friends don't want any girls hanging out at their new clubhouse. But a silly old sign that says NO GIRLS ALLOWED can't stop Beezus and Ramona Quimby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Ol' Henry
I was introduced to Beverly Cleary's books when I was in elementary school, about twenty years ago. While it was easier for me to relate to Beezus (my being a girl and having a sister who was the same age difference between Beezus and Ramona),I still really enjoyed reading about Henry. Some people may find the story dated, but to me, that is part of the charm. Not only are they great reading, but they teach history, too. The book was written in 1949/1950, and accurately describes a young boy's life during that time period. The book is fun, entertaining, and leaves you wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Search of Salman
I enjoyed reading this book because Henry goes fishing.I enjoy reading Beverly Cleary's books because she writes about childhood and animals. Also,I like the chapters because they were thirty or forty pages long.I highly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and the Gigantic Fish
I enjoyed reading this book because it made me read a lot faster than I thought I could.I learned that you can worry about things all the time. The illustrations were neat and colorful they helped me understand what I was reading. I also liked the ending of the story because Henry was happy. I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars To Catch or Not To Catch?
These are some reasons you should read Henry and Ribsy. First, it is funny when Ramona wants to eat P.T.A,because you can't eat P.T.A. Second, its exciting when he tries to keep Ribsy out of trouble to go fishing. If he does go fishing you'll ask will he catch or not catch. So read Henry and Ribsy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beverly Cleary is clever.
I have always enjoyed Beverly Cleary. This story where Janet collects little objects that are insignificant to us grown ups is cute. Not only does she collect the items but she hordes them as well. Protecting them from her brother. In the end she lets all the stuff go for something much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to read aloud!
Another wonderful story for pre-school and younger elementary students.Part of Beverly Cleary's series about young twins Jimmy and Janet.Janet is a collector who saves her treasures in paper bags. The twins move from cribs into "big beds" in this story, so it's a good story for the two or three year old who is making that transition. My children loved to have this story read to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Silbling rivalry
I bought this book for my daughter when she reached age 2 1/2 and began to experience sibling rivalry with her older brother.Although the book is a bit dated (traditional mother at home with children, father off at work),it deals very well with the feelings children experience when theirpossesions and space are sought after by a sibling. It also deals wellwith the mother's frustration when the kids are constantly bickering -helps to show a child why a mother might get frustrated. ... Ramona and Her Father

Ramona's father has lost his job, and there's a grumpy mood in the Quimby household. Ramona just wants everyone to get along, but it's hard when her mother is worried all the time, her father is grouchy, and Beezus is just ... Beezus.

Ramona and Her Mother

Ramona always tries to do the right thing ... so why does everything turn out so wrong? At seven and a half years old (for now), she's worried about spelling and about Willa Jean getting all the attention. Most of all, she's worried that her mother may not love her anymore.

Ramona Forever

It is a time of change for Ramona and her family. Aunt Beatrice is getting married, Ramona's father is looking for a new teaching job, and Ramona's mother suddenly seems a little thicker around the middle. Amid all the chaos, Ramona must say good-bye to one family member and hello to a new one.

Ramona's World

Ramona can't wait for school to start -- she's sure fourth grade will be the best year of her life. With a new baby sister, a new best friend, Daisy, and some glorious new calluses on her hands from the rings in the park, Ramona is on top of the world!

I am a 44 year old security guard, and this book was given to me by a fireman.I have read it about 400 times. This is the most endearing book I have ever read, and I read a lot of books.
Poor little Ramona is seven years old, and she gets into more trouble trying to be good than anyone I know...except when I was that age...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good idea
An interesting idea - the book takes one poignant chapter from popular books with characters who are seven years old. The great advantage of this, I think, is that it gets kids interested in the great books. The disadvantage is that often, in my opinion, there is not enough background to fully appreciate or enjoy the chapter - or short story as it is billed.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's heaven to publish a book about being seven.
It's a great idea! One book, twelve chapters, twelve celebrated authors. It's a book about being seven years old where all of the lead characters are seven.
Judy Blume, Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary, James Howe, Ann M. Martin, Patricia MacLachlan, Betty Horvath, Johanna Hurwitz, Suzt Kline, Susan Wojciechowski, Dick King-Smith, and Miriam Cohen all contribute a chapter to this book by sharing one of the chapters of of a completed book. The story lines focus on a seven year old facing one of life's challenges or going through change. James takes a wild ride on a peach. Billy isn't sure he wants pink to remain his favorite color. Emma and Zachery are baby-sat by their childless aunt and uncle. Sophie will go for her first riding lesson. Karen is a "two-two." Nora isn't sure she likes her new neighbor. Bernice lost her tooth down the drain. Ramona worries about her father. Freddy plays the lead in the school play. Song Lee faces her fear of public speaking. Jasper is a burgeoning hero. And Jacob has writer's block.
This book does a good job of giving the reader an opportunity to be introduced to these books and authors. Though each book can easily stand on its own, when compiled as such, they seem to lose their strength. Topics that are great in individual works become melodramatic in this format.
Since nothing new had to be written to package this product, it seems clear that the publisher has little to lose here. One wonders whether the decision to publish this book was made by an editor or marketing director. Was there a need for this book, or simply a market for it?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Sampler
This is an excellent way to get a taste of a lot of different books at once. While some of the stories are well-known classics, there are enough lesser-known ones to keep it interesting. We liked some of the excerpts so much that we read the entire book. It's a fun 7th birthday present!

4-0 out of 5 stars 7 Thinks It's Heaven...
This book is a collection of 12 chapters from various books that might interest a seven year old---like a music sampler. None offer a complete story, but they were meaty enough for my seven year old daughter to want topursue reading some of the books. A good way to introduce a child to somenew material. I wasn't too excited about the idea of paying for excerpts, but the reader appreciated the opportunity to "look before shebought"! ... Read more
