Product Description
A sensitive exploration of a difficult problem by an award winning author/illustrator team.

"One day in school, just out of the blue,"
Everett whispers, "Greg started to cry,
and I went over to ask him why

and he looked up and sighed,
'I can't tell you.'
And he had the saddest, saddest face
like he was lost in the loneliest place."

Everett Anderson doesn't know what to do when his friend Greg comes to school with bruises, or when Greg cries and can't explain what's wrong. Should Everett tell the teacher, or would that only make things worse for Greg? Everett's sister thinks maybe it's none of their business, but he can't stop worrying about his friend. Then, when Everett Anderson tells his mother, he opens a window of possibility.

This tender story perfectly evokes the confusion, concern--and eventual hope--one little boy feels in the face of a very difficult problem.

Excerpt:Lucille Clifton (June 27, 1936 February 13, 2010) was an American poet, writer, and educator from Buffalo, New York. Common topics in her poetry include the celebration of her African American heritage, and feminist themes, with particular emphasis on the female body. Lucille Clifton (born Thelma Lucille Sayles) grew up in Depew, New York and attended Fosdick-Masten Park High School. She went on to study at Howard University from 1953 to 1955 and graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia (near Buffalo) in 1955. In 1958 she married Fred James Clifton, a professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo and sculptor whose carvings depicted African faces. Lucille worked as a claims clerk in the New York State Division of Employment, Buffalo (19581960), and as literature assistant in the Office of Education in Washington, D.C. (19601971). Writer, Ishmael Reed, introduced Mrs.Clifton to her husband Fred while he was organizing The Buffalo Community Drama Workshop. Fred and Lucille Clifton starred in the group's version of "The Glass Menagerie" which was called "Poetic and Sensitive" by The Buffalo Evening News. In 1966, Reed took Mrs.Clifton's poetry to Langston Hughes who included them in his anthology "The Poetry Of The Negro." Lucille Clifton traced her family's roots to the West African Kingdom of Dahomey, now the Republic of Benin. Growing up she was told by her mother, "Be proud, you're from Dahomey women!" She cites as one of her ancestors the first Black woman to be "legally hanged" for manslaughter in the state of Kentucky during the time of Slavery in the United States.
