Product Description
Cambodia's reconstruction and reform efforts have spanned almost 25 years following the Khmer Rouge period that ended in 1979. Economic reforms began in earnest in the early 1990s, but reform efforts were beset by ongoing internal tensions and civil unrest. Although external factors, including sizeable aid inflows and a trade agreement with the United States, helped boost growth in the last decade, the country remains one of the poorest in the region. The current coalition government has announced a strategy aimed at revitalizing economic reforms, and in 2004 Cambodia formally joined the World Trade Organization. But elimination of the garment quota system under the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing is exposing an underlying deterioration in competitiveness, which, coupled with slow growth in the agriculture sector and other structural obstacles to private sector growth, have resulted in a medium-term outlook that remains uncertain. ... Product Description
From Ancient Greece to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, sport's appeal has been universal. But what is sport? Is it "war minus the shooting", satisfying a basic human need for conflict? Or is it just a business, and a cut-throat one at that? This book explores the reality of sport, historically and today, and discusses its heroes and heroines, its philosophy, its religion and its huge shareholding in big business. Through interviews, analysis and photographs, the book examines the conflicts at the heart of sport, and the new forces at work - money, television, technology, drugs and political prejudice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book deserves to continue to be read.Fine essays, great pictures and illustrations
This book is a collection of essays honoring the memory of Matthew W. Stirling, the grand man of Olmec archaeology who died in 1975.This book came out in 1981 and while there have been many wonderful advances in the study of the Olmecs and their predecessors these essays and pictures present very well the state of scholarship at the time. The information on Stirling and his career is also quite wonderful.Seeing him with those giant heads in situ is still breathtaking.

We read about iron ore mirrors, implications of sculpture and figurines, what the deliberate defacing of monuments might mean, issues in Olmec iconography, the diets of Mesoamerican peoples over time and in different geographies (sort of like the spread of American civilization might be detected by the spread of Big Mac boxes).I also enjoyed Michael Coe's thoughts about why the Olmec might have picked swampy San Lorenzo for their home.

This is an interesting book and while more recent books, such as John Clark's wonderful "Olmec Art and Archaeology in Mesoamerica", this book deserves its place and to continue to find new readers. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume offers a timely and dynamic study of the rise of religion in American politics, examining the public messages of political leaders over the past seventy-five years. The authors show that U.S. politics today is defined by a calculated, deliberate, and partisan use of faith that is unprecedented in modern politics. Beginning with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, America has seen a no-holds-barred religious politics that seeks to attract voters, identify and attack enemies, and solidify power.Domke and Coe identify a set of religious signals sent by both Republicans and Democrats in speeches, party platforms, proclamations, visits to audiences of faith, and even celebrations of Christmas. The updated edition of this ground-breaking book includes a new preface, an updated analysis of the last Bush administration, as well as a new final chapter on the Jeremiah Wright controversy, the candidacies of Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, and Barack Obama's victory. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Word counts of presidential speeches
What this book does provide is some interesting data on word counts of presidential speeches over the years since Roosevelt. There has been a decided shift toward framing with God.

The treatment of religion in politics is much better in American Theocracy by Kevin Phillips. Much more history and more linkages to political parties.

Also, the reviewed book is thin on theology.

For most people, checking the book out of the library is a better option than a purchase because it may not be something that you want to use again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timely Book
Absolutely brilliant, absolutely fascinating, absolutely timely, and absolutely of great importance. This is an excellent and extremely informative book for those participating in the upcoming elections. After having read The God Stragegy, the reader will be able to listen to the candidates with a more informed ear and will be able to make more informed choices on their ballots.David Domke and Kevin Coe have done their homework in researching this book. Their ideas aren't just off the tops of their heads; they can back up every statement they make, and do so.The God Strategy is definitely a book for both readers of faith and non-believers alike. For those with religious beliefs who might tend to shy away from the title alone, David Domke is a self-professed Christian. The God Strategy is a must read for those who are concernced about making America a strong and compassionate country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Religion and Politics through a New Lens
"The God Strategy" is a well-written, meticulously researched, and eye-opening examination of how U.S. politicians (particularly our four most recent presidents) use religion to win votes. It's also a genuinely interesting read. If you're at all curious about just how influential religion has become in today's political arena, you need to read this book. David Domke and Kevin Coe provide clear and varied examples that show how campaigns have increasingly capitalized on the use of religious messages (the God strategy) to get their candidates elected. Once you have read this book you will view the current presidential campaign in a whole new light; I have been amazed at how many times in the past couple months I've noticed politicians using this strategy in political ads or during debates. It is as if the authors predicted exactly what is now occurring. Clearly, this is a testament to the strength of the research that informs this book. "The God Strategy" should be a part of every thinking person's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using God -Oh My
If you read David Domke's last book, "God Willing", (a must read for every
one) which exposed the myth of a Free and Independent Press during the
current Bush administration following 9/11, and the calculated steps taken
by Bush and his staff to craft a framework to grow support for the president's
policies and his growing reliance on the ideology of Political Fundamentalism, then you will really enjoy this new book. You will also come to understand how politicians, thru a strategic communication approach grounded in a conservative religious worldview, "The "God Strategy" were able to achieve the two tasks listed above.

This new book traces the growth of the God Strategy in American politics
from the days of President Franklin Roosevelt to the current George Bush and
how both the Republicans and the Democrats have embraced the joining of
religion and politics. Domke and co-author, Kevin Coe lay out in great detail how politics
and religion came together and how both sides, to push agendas and win
elections with results that often threaten the very foundations of American
Democracy, have used this wedding

In reading the" God Strategy" I have come to understand some of the how's,
why's, and so what's involved in the rise of religion in American politics. I
am surely more aware of the subtleties used by both sides in their efforts
to shape a new America. I am even more aware of the misguided and often
angry methods used by the followers of the God Strategy in achieving their
end results and of the price America as a nation might be called on to pay
for those methods

Thanks Domke and Coe for this interesting, insightful and well-researched view of religion in America politics.

Excerpt: "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" is the title of a song written by Steve Goodman and John Prine, produced by Ron Bledsoe, and recorded by country music singer David Allan Coe. It was the third single release of his career, included on his album Once Upon a Rhyme. The song was Coe's first Top Ten hit, reaching a peak of #8 on the Billboard country singles charts. "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" is accompanied mainly by resonator guitar, pedal steel guitar and electric guitar. In the song, the narrator addresses a former lover, who has rejected him to the point that he considers it "useless to remain." The song's final verse is preceded by a recitation in which Coe explains that "a friend of named Steve Goodman" wrote the song and considered it "the perfect country and western song." He goes on to say that Goodman added the final verse after Coe told him that it was not the perfect country song because it "hadn't said anything at all about mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting drunk." In response to Coe's comment, Goodman wrote a satirical final verse that intentionally uses exaggerations of country music clichés: Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prisonAnd I went to pick her up in the rainBut before I could get to the station in my pickup truckShe got runned over by a damned ol' train In the book Whitness: A Critical Reader, author Mike Hill cited the song as an example of Coe being the "'hardest' and most burlesque performer of recent times," adding that the "perverse hokiness" of the song's final verse made it "perfect." Product Description
How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. Psychology can sometimes seem disconnected from, if not antithetical to, Christian perspectives on life. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs? This revised edition of a widely appreciated text now presents five models for understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity. All the essays and responses have been reworked and updated with some new contributors including the addition of a new perspective, the transformative view from John Coe and Todd Hall (Biola University). Also found here is David Powlison (Westminster Theological Seminary) who offers the biblical counseling model. The levels-of-explanation model is advanced by David G. Myers (Hope College), while Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College) offers an entirely new chapter presenting the integration model. The Christian psychology model is put forth by Robert C. Roberts (Baylor University) now joined by Paul J. Watson (University of Tennesee, Chattanooga). Each of the contributors responds to the other essayists, noting points of agreement as well as problems they see. Eric L. Johnson provides a revised introduction that describes the history of Christians and psychology, as well as a conclusion that considers what might unite the five views and how a reader might evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each view.Psychology and Christianity: Five Views has become a standard introductory textbook for students and professors of Christian psychology. This revision promises to keep it so. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book about Seb Coe
Being a runner Sebastian Coe is one of biggest inspirations I have and therefore I read everything I can about him. When I saw the biography about him here I ordered it at once.

The book is about Sebastian Coe from the years when he was a young boy until the games in 1980. It covers the events around the 800 and 1500 metres and the days in between with great detail. This is one of the most famous come-backs of the running history ever and it's interesting to read how it happened.

One thing I think the book lacked is a bit more feeling. I believe the author has tried to be too objective when he wrote about Sebastian, probably because everyone was so pleased with him at the time that he believed it would sound sugar coated, but some of the magic got lost then. This is the reason I give it a 4 star rating. One other reason is that it's too short, but there is luckily a sequel,Sebastian Coe: Coming Back

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative picture of Coe in the early 80s
