Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses.

Product Description
The fifth set in this important and well-regarded facsimile series considers the reputations and biographical portrayal of three innovative and controversial writers: Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins and William Thackeray. All three had complex private lives which scandalized contemporary society. These anthologies of contemporary biographical material shed light on the processes at work in the establishment of a public image and a critical reputation. In particular, with this selection of writers, they reveal a process of disguise - the masks and evasions that instinctively rebellious novelists employed to preserve their respectability. The set will be invaluable to scholars of the Victorian era, biography, and literature in general. ... Read more

Product Description
The eighteenth century poet, William Collins, is now recognized as one of the most important fore-runners of the Romantic Movement, and there is intense interest in his life and writings. Attempts to write his biography have been made at various times, but as Collins lived a mysterious and secluded life and was uncommunicative about his private affairs even to his intimate friends, it has until now been impossible to trace his career except in vague outline. P. L. Carver's new biography, however, has gleaned new information from a number of sources likely and unlikely, including wills, poems attributed to a Scottish minister, and a collection of letters in a ducal library. When Collins died in 1759, he was virtually unknown to the reading public. The only contemporary who has left on record a critical appreciation of his now famous "Odes" was Gray, the author of "Elegy". Gradually, towards the end of the century, interest in Collins increased, with Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Hazlitt among his ardent admirers. Today, P. L. Carver's new discoveries not only contribute to our knowledge of Collin's life, but to the better understanding of his poems, among hem the great "Ode to Evening" and "How Sleep the Brave". --- from book's dustjacket ...
