At the age of twenty-three, Padraic Colum (1881-1972) was one of the founding fathers of the Abbey Theatre. His contribution to the development of Irish drama continued until his voluntary exile to America in 1914. His play, Broken Soil (1903), was the first commercial success at the Abbey, and it established the long-lived tradition of the peasant play on the Irish stage. This collection comprises the three major forms of his dramatic art: The Land (1905); Betrayal (1912); and two of his five Noh plays (a five-play cycle containing poetry and prose following the Yeats and Japanese Model), Glendalough (based on the career of Charles Stewart Parnell), and Monasterboice (based on the early life of Colum’s lifelong friend, James Joyce). ... disapointment
it was very dissapointing to recieve this book and find out that there were no illustrations in it. this was not clear to me at all when i purchased the book.

Excellent intro for kids!
When I was a kid, my dad read me the most fantastic stories of the gods of the norse.I have continued to learn what I can ever since, but until now had not found a good introduction for my own children.My 7 and 13 year old girls beg for more every night, and I wonder what I am to do when I finally finish.My 16 year old son, of course, won't let me read to him :( , but he can read it on his own.

It is, of course lacking in some of the more adult aspects of the myths, but I find it doesn't take anything away from them rather it keeps it just a little simpler to grasp.

All in all, it's a great starting point!

Buyer beware !This Alladin Publication is the same as the Dover Publication Nordic Gods and Heroes.However, it is lacking much of the original artwork, especially that which introduces each of the four parts.
The first 3 parts are Norse mythology and the 4th is the Teutonic Ring of the Nibelungs.This book was written for children and young adults and gives only a bare bones telling of the myths.Be prepared for some archaic language : "dost", "spake", "knowst", etc.

Why Amazon chooses to sell these two books as a pair is beyond me as they are essentially identical.I recommend the Dover edition because of the extra artwork.

Good intro to Norse "myths" for young people!
Simplified watered down versions of stories from the Eddas. This book seems to be aimed at a late elementary or jr. high school age reader. For that target audience this is a great introduction and would probably be the best thing you could buy if you were trying to picque a young persons interest in the Norse "Myths". If your an adult there are several other books on this subject that I would recomend over this one though.

How to leave a lasting legacy to your grandchildren
Buy and read a copy to you grandchildren; They will remember the experienceforever.I actually reference back to this book when I do studies on philosophy and religion.There is much more here than meets the eye, and the stories have survived for millenia. ... Read more

the golden fleece
THE GOLDEN FLEECE
The setting of the story is in many places such as Mount Pelion, iolcus, and limos. The characters in the story are Jason, king aeson, Hercules, thesues, the Argonauts, Orpheus, and of course the Greek gods.the conflict in the story is that Jason has to find the golden fleece so his dad can become king again. The plot in the story is that Jason's dad blows a horn so chirion could take care of him and Jason's uncle is king and he has to find the golden fleece and Jason finds the fleece.The point of view is a first person point of view.The theme theme of the story is that Jason needs to find the golden fleece.

A Must Read Book!!!!!
The Golden Fleece has many parts that are interesting in it. It is very adventurous, it keeps you wanting to read more.One part in the Golden Fleece is when Orpheaus is telling the story of Medusa. Then Perseus went and chopped of the Gorgon's head off by using a shield that he had found and a sword given to him by the gods he then goes and goes shows this to the king that wouldn't allow him to enter his kingdom and rescue his mother from the king that wants to marry her. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in mythology.

a master of language
Padraic Colum is a great story teller and he has done a marvellous job here.Over a period of years, I have read this book to my children three times.They continued to enjoy the rich texture of the language in these stories and each time found new levels of meaning. For young people there is no better introduction to these stories.

the golden fleece
I think that the golden fleece was a great book and had great illistrations,and detail in the story a few places are a little rough but still a great book. It whould be a little better if it did'int keep skiping story's

I've taught 6th grade for more than a decade so I'm quite familiar with the Greek heroes.That's why I was so disappointed to discover that this is one of the most boring versions of the Greek myths I've ever read.Perhaps in 1922, when it was new, it excited children to research further, but modern kids find the language stulted and the action almost non-existent.Far better versions of these stories exist.Unfortunately for me, taken in by good reviews, I bought twenty copies for classroom use before discovering how deadly dull it was.If you have a kid whose read everything else, s/he might be interested, otherwise just forget it. ...
