Product Description
A startling novel based on the latest fertility technology, it's "one of the most memorable of Robin Cook's medical thrillers." (The Associated Press)Amazon.com Review
Robin Cook, master of bestselling medical thrillers, answers the "What's the worst thing that could happen?" question in this plot-twisting novel in which villains with no sense of ethics or social responsibility get their greedy hands on the newest cloning technology. It starts when a couple of Harvard graduate students answer the Wingate Clinic's ad for egg donors. The women figure on financing a year in Venice and the down payment on a Boston condo with the extraordinary sum they're promised. But a year later, the heroines feel the emotional need to seek out the children they've made possible for infertile couples. So they disguise themselves and seek jobs at the clinic in order to access the identifying information. The clinic, as it turns out, has plenty of secrets to protect, so it's hard to believe that a pair of computer neophytes could bypass its security. But they do, and the author is an adept enough writer to finesse this detail.

As in past books, Cook is much better at the technical details of medical research than he is at characterization, but he definitely knows how to plot a thriller. This one keeps you turning the pages until the final denouement, though the last chapter ends abruptly, leaving the reader to wonder whether he ran out of steam or is just setting up a sequel in which he'll recycle the villains in a new scheme with a new pair of victims. --Jane Adams ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
Isn't this kind of claptrap against the (literary) law these days? Cook creates two Harvard PhD females that (for some reason...? Hm?) "have to" dress up like a hooker and a super-dowdy "librarian" in order to dither themselves into deep trouble -- and THEN are TOTALLY rescued by a PHONE CALL TO THE POLICE from the he's-just-not-that-into-you, cold-fish, med-school boyfriend. As bad as the whole book was -- and it was. So. BAD. -- nothing compares to how irritating the ending was. I can't stand a powerless-damsel-in-distress rescue anyway, but for them to be rescued by the doctor/boyfriend whom she'd basically (and unsuccessfully) begged to marry her...well, that's just awful!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book
Shock by Robin Cook was awesome. I love to read Robin Cook's work. Being a medical doctor himself, he has the ability to write about the medical profession in a fictional way that makes it more believable. In this particular novel, we have two young women who donate eggs to an infertility clinic, but then become curious as to whether or not children were ever born from those eggs. Using subterfuge, they gain access to the records, and let's just say, there was a lot more than meets the eye to that clinic! This is a definite page turner and I suggest this book highly to anyone who likes medical mystery/thriller/horror novels. My only regret about the book is that the women's status at the end of the book was unclear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorites...
I am a huge fan of Robin Cook's books and have personally read many of them. This book was ok but it did start to drag on. I also had a hard time connecting with the characters. About 2/3's way through I read the last chapter. I was so disappointed by the ending that I never finished the book.

I'm planning to read his books from the first to the last over the summer so I will definitely try to give this one another chance. Shock

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book I've read...
I listened to this book on tape and was so disappointed I may not pick up another Robin Cook book for some time. It was a lightweight book whose ending, or lack thereof, was the biggest "shock". I can only imagine that it had to do with the stupid ending and how one felt at the finish. I wouldn't recommend this book if it was the last book on the shelf! Why would anyone write a book and then let the storyline just stop? I actually thought I was missing the final tape. I had to give it one star but it doesn't even rate that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Medical Ethics vs BlatantGreed
The essence of a good story about modern medicine and opportunities for it to go in the wrong direction. One too many mishaps for these supposedly well educated women as they delve further and further into medical corruption, deceit, and greed.Pushes one to explore the moral dilemma's created by technological advances in medicine. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dumb story, poorly written, waste of time.
I listened to this book on my mp3 player.I kept laughing over the ridiculously stilted dialogue, ludicrously stupid characters (Harvard grad students?), and dumb plot. And what was with the ending?I guess the author got sick of his stupid story and just tacked on a last minute "let's finish this crap up."So, other than laughing at how terrible it was, there was no entertainment value whatsoever. Now I'm just hoping not to meet any children with eyes of two colors and black hair with a white forlock! As many times as I heard it, it should have been called, "The Women."

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I had hopes for this book when I started it.The first chapter was promising, unfortunately it went downhill from there.I continued to read hoping that it would improve but it didn't.

I won't go into a synopsis of the plot because it has been stated in many of the reviews.I will say that I felt like Cook must have gotten tired of the story because the last chapter and the epilogue were even more thrown together than the rest of the book. The epilogue left entirely too many questions unanswered and left me wanting to utter profanities at having wasted away the hours it took to read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'll Never Get Those Hours Back
What a poorly written book.I actually felt embarrassed for Cook (I'm not a fan per se, but I have read 3 or 4 of his books). And he should feel embarrassed, too.The book cost me only a buck at a church rummage sale; I'm giving it one star because I have to and because I got it cheap. But reading the blasted thing took several hours I'll never get back.Ugh.

3-0 out of 5 stars My word! Cook's unnatural dialogue never bothers me...
In both Marker and Shock, the female protagonists say, "My word," often enough to start a drinking game. You could also have a drinking game everytime one character uses full names and titles to speak about a person to another character that they both know - but since the reader doesn't, our girls have to become Cook's version of the Greek Chorus. They also function as the Interlocutor, especially when the girls use their own "Cookspeak", a language used to educate the reader and each other, repeatedly and most times redundantly, which is uh...stilted, formal English.
But I am used to his dialogue now, unlike most people complaining about the effect being new, I found it in almost every book I read by him over the years, so I was just resigned to it. And it does make for a good drinking game.
Enough about the unrealistic chatter, the point is to get the storymoving along and learn a little something painlessly in the process. It may not be as much fun as a Chrichton novel, but once you can get past your dislike for cardboard cutout dolls there is a story there and it is a nice timewaster, plot holes and all. Throw in some suspenseful action and some good imagery, and you may enjoy learning a little something along the way.
Some teachers are very dull and dry and detached and it is hard to care about the subject matter, but Cook at least tries to make his points with characters who almost try to sound like real people he may have once overheard talking. Hey, it's a Robin Cook book, you should know what to expect. I am a skimmer reader anyway, so that may explain why I don't get myself bogged down in too many extraneous details or formal dialogues.
This is edutainment, even Dan Brown can have his characters start talking on stilts now and then, but it doesn't mean I won't listen to what they say. Maybe most of these medical/theological mystery writers need to take a crash course from Jeffrey Deaver, if he were to offer a class in, oh, how about Basic Character Speech Patterns 101, with emphasis on current cultural language development. Anyway I give this 3 stars because it was a good waste of my time, and am going to start reading Seizure now to see if that will add anything to the drinking game. My word, I hope it shall! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Un thriller cousu de fil blanc
... 1-0 out of 5 stars Stinker
One-third of the way through this book, I was laughing at the juvenile dialogue between the two Harvard idiots who, after answering an ad and donating their eggs for $90,000, never once suspected the eggs might be used in sinister and nightmarish ways.

Two years later, the Harvard chicks, while still exchanging the same dimwitted dialogue with each other, decide to seek out the children they believe were produced from their eggs. They don ridiculous masquerade, sneak into the highly-guarded Wingate Infertility Clinic, get hired under phony names and fool everyone they meet into thinking they are just regular employees doing their jobs. When it becomes apparent that their lives are at risk, they continue to dig for facts and evidence - an action not plausible for these two immature characters.

As soon as the discussion of pigs came up I knew the plot's course and the reason for the dingbat eggs. I did not, however, guess the crippled ending of this failed novel. Could a sequel be in the wind? God, spare us the misery if it is.

It's one thing to suspend belief, but Robin Cook hanged belief by its neck and strangled it to death. Shock is a pitiful waste of one's time, and it's insulting to the author's fan base. I'm not convinced that Cook actually wrote this mess. If he did, he's slipping. Maybe it's time for him to retire thy pen, and don thy reading glasses instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHOCK BY robin Cook
I cannot adequately review this book because IT WAS WRITTEN IN SPANISH AND I NEITHeR SPEAK NOR READ SPANISH.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shock is sub-par Robin Cook
I've always enjoyed many of Robin Cook's books but Shock was a different story. The two main characters are Harvard doctoral students. These two wind up doing many implausible things throughout the book. Most high school graduates wouldn't do what these two do, much less a Harvard doctoral candidate. It's milding entertaining until the end when the book just plain stops. It's so obvious a sequal was planned. There is no other reason for the book to end with nothing resolved. I suspect poor reviews and poor sales ended the sequel plans.

1-0 out of 5 stars The shock is that I actually finished the book...
...after wanting to throw it in the garbage so many times.

This book is about two stupid girls, who do something "iffy" for a bunch of money, then don't know how to leave well-enough alone and get into trouble. Did Cook write this just for the sake of writing. Mind-numbingly BAD!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's in Spanish?
I am very unhappy with this purchase because I did not find anywhere in the listing that this novel was not an English language book. I love this author and many of his books, but for obvious reasons (i.e. I am not bilingual) I am unable to enjoy this novel. I think this should be prominently noted in the listing for people who are looking for English and also for anyone trying to find a Spanish language book-they need this information as well. ...
