Product Description
This book builds on the large volume of existing literature that details the social, moral and economic context in which women of this era operated. It further complements the smaller body of existing writing that probes the interior lives of women. However, where as these latter works use personal documents, such as diaries and letters, to gain insight into the interior lives of mainly upper middle- and upper-class women, this study concentrates on women from the lower and middle levels of the middle classes and on the lower classes. There are many 'gaps' or 'silences' in women's history - especially in relation to their interior lives. Historians seeking to penetrate the thoughts and emotions of 'ordinary' single middle-class women living during the Late Victorian and Edwardian years face a challenging task as these women rarely left personal documents. Popular or bestselling novels are numbered among the few written sources that are available to help historians to fill in some of the absences in the conventional historical record. This study looks at a selection of the popular and bestselling novels of Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) and Marie Corelli (1855-1924).Bearing in mind the extensive readership that Bennett and Corelli each enjoyed, we can legitimately assume that these authors' ideas and values, consistently recurring within their fiction, corresponded with many of the emotional concerns and standards of their audience, resonating in the minds of their readers, as well as simultaneously entering into the wider contemporary debate. Using a comparative approach to examine Bennett's solidly popular middlebrow books and Corelli's phenomenally popular or bestselling novels, this work asks the question: which is more valuable to historians of mentalite - middlebrow or bestselling fiction? ... Product Description
Marie Corelli (1855-1924) was the most popular novelist of the turn of the century, outselling Hall Caine, Mrs. Humphry Ward, H. G. Wells, and Arthur Conan Doyle by the thousands. For thirty years she was ridiculed by reviewers and the literary elite--Edmund Gosse dismissed her as "that little milliner"--but these opinions had no impact on her mass appeal. In 1895, with The Sorrows of Satan, she broke all previous publishing records, and by 1906 a Corelli novel sold 100,000 copies a year.

Idol of Suburbia returns Marie Corelli to conversations about the late-Victorian and Edwardian literary world. As Annette R. Federico points out, Corelli's participation in the cultural life of her time was highly creative, combative, and contradictory. Her ongoing war with highbrow literary critics and her management of her own image illuminate continuing debates about literary value, class hegemony, and gender politics at the fin de sicle.

In examining Corelli's celebrity and her protean literary talents in the context of a changing book market, Federico reveals the profusion of the late-Victorian literary imagination. She analyzes Corelli's participation in literary decadence, feminism, and New Woman fiction, and she discusses how seriously we should take her aesthetic and its literary influence. Federico asks why heterosexual love seems pathological in so many of Corelli's novels and assesses the validity of biographical and psychoanalytic explanations of her celibacy and her lifelong companionship with another woman.

Idol of Suburbia is the first full-length study to address these questions and to set Corelli within the framework of literary history and contemporary critical theory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Find!
A Christmas Greeting was published at the height of her fame in a limited number and waselegantly bound for the gift giving season.Inside this reprint are a rather scarce collection of Marie's poems, essays, stories, and even a song - it includes a then popular story known as "The Ghost in the Sedan Chair" which is a lighthearted holiday 'ghost story' along with several other fantasies.Unlike her novels, her short stories don't have convoluted plot lines that take several pages to unfold. Therefore, you can enjoy the essence of Marie Corelli without getting lost in the middle.A fun way to introduce yourself to her work and her unique style of fiction. ... The following story is simply the account of a strange and daring experiment once actually attempted, and is offered to those who are interested in the unseen possibilities of the hereafter, merely for what it is-a single episode in the life of a man who voluntarily sacrificed his whole worldly career in a supreme effort to prove the apparently unprovable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Conclusion of the Heliobas Trilogy beginning with "A Romance of Two Worlds," followed by "Ardath."
If you like Faustian themes, then this book is for you.It combines a good reprise Faust, with elements of Pygmalion and a dash of Frankenstein as a sorcerer binds the soul of a dying girl to her body, obtaining thereby a female with whom he cannot help, despite the warnings, of falling in love.As with the first two, if you got hooked like I did, you will fall into this book despite yourself, and be absolutely mesmerized by the workings of this author's mind! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Look into Corelli's Spirituality.
This book is a direct affront to the "High Decadence of the Yellow Nineties" and their moral deconstructions.Marie, although decadent and florid in much of her style and philosophy of writing, is at the same time rather morally strict in her own views of ethics and rules of conduct - especially in regards to spirituality.

A rather entertaining read if you have read her novels.Sort of makes you wish you could sit down and have a proper tea with the old gal and really get inside her head! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to challenge church doctrine
This book challenges social mores, and traditional religious beliefs/religious DOCTRINE while teaching about the true love of Christ (vs. "Christian") through a very detailed scandal of art, murder, love, lust, liars, illegitimate children, positioning for power, and forgiveness without smut.

That it was written in the late 1800s and is as relevant today, traversing 3 centuries, should give it standing to be republished and make you curious to read it.For those who stand on doctrine/rules, I urge you to read through to the end before judging this book.

Marie Corelli is a master at character and plot development. It is thick with detail. As the book is more than a century old, it's easy to find a version online (and I've intentionally left out plot/character in this review for that very reason--the first 50 pages will have you hooked) but for those who love real books, this is a gem to add to your collection. ...
