Product Description
Robert Louis Stevenson gave travel writing a good name, as well as bequeathing it one of his best-known observations, "to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive". He is best-known for his literary journeys into the past, in such books as "Kidnapped" and "Treasure Island"; but he also travelled in real life, on a donkey in the Cevennes, and finally across the Pacific to Samoa, where he died on 3 December 1894. Hunter Davies retraces Stevenson's steps in this part travelogue, part biography, visiting those places which will always be associated with him; from his birthplace in Edinburgh, to France, California, and then his final home in the Pacific, on the island of Samoa. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of irresponsible hackwork
Davies is a lazy researcher and an even lazier note-taker: nearly every passage from Stevenson in this book is misquoted, often distoring Stevenson's meaning.(See my online review in the Boston Book Review). Don't buy this awful book, read Stevenson's wonderful letters instead. ... Read more

Who doesn't remember Kevin Keegan's haircut? Or David Seaman's? Or David Beckham's latest...? From the History of the Ball to the History of Football Haircuts, this book examines every facet of football beyond the rules and goals to the fans, commentators, merchandise, books and even art it has inspired. It provides the reader with more than goal averages and statistics, concentrating on the real living history of football and how the people, both players and supporters, and their desire to see a win for the home side has spawned an industry and a culture reaching far beyond the pitches both in Britain and worldwide. Boots, Balls and Haircuts takes the feeling that urged the laying-on of hands for Beckham's left foot and puts it into words showing how and why, the world has come to love this game with such passion and dedication. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

There are very few people who do not collect something, consciously or otherwise. The perennial popularity of such television shows as Antiques Roadshow is eloquent testimony to the enduring appeal of collecting. As a compulsive collector of items as diverse as comics, coronation mugs, British prime ministerial autographs, football memorabilia, and wickerwork from Botswana, Hunter Davies is well placed to write about the fascinations and frustrations of "treasure-hunting." Here he writes affectionately about 50 different collections that he has built up over the years—from first issues of magazines and newspapers to Beatles memorabilia. In his inimitably enthusiastic style, he describes how his collections came into being, tells the intriguing stories behind the items in them, and recounts his triumphs and disasters. He also discusses the nature of the urge to collect and how people can set about building their own collections. He touches anecdotally on the economics of collecting, but this is not a book of lists, facts, and figures—it is a book to be read and savored, rich in vignette and reminiscence drawn from the deep well of its author’s multi-faceted enthusiasms.

Product Description
Hunter Davies sought to make sense of the miasma of contradictory statements that have been made about Columbus. He studied the Archives of the Indies in Spain, and Columbus family documents in Italy. From this research, he produced a biography of Columbus, which appears in chapters alternating with an account of his own present-day journey in his predecessor's steps. In Haiti he tracked down the exact location at which the "Santa Maria" was shipwrecked and the first settlement established in the New World. He went to the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela - and many other places. Hunter Davies is the author of over 30 books which range from travel books about Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District and the Grand Tour, to biographies of William Wordsworth, the Beatles, Beatrix Potter and George Stephenson. ... Product Description
Witty and eccentric Behind the Scenes at the Museum of Baked Beans traces Hunter Davies' search for the strangest collections in the UK.

There are lots of books about museums -- the art gallery, the town or national museum we all know and love -- but the museum devoted to one specific subject tends to get overlooked, or gets listed in the local guidebook as an oddity. Hunter Davies feels it's time to focus a book entirely on the unusual, the eccentric and the downright potty.

Behind the Scenes at the Museum of Baked Beans is a celebration of the quirky collections -- and the passionate collectors behind them -- that make up some of the strangest and most fascinating museums in the country. From the Keswick Pencil Museum and the Museum of Baked Beans in Port Talbot to the Lawnmower Museum in Southport and the Sheep Centre in Cockermouth, Hunter Davies' tour of the weird and wonderful museums that pepper the country is both an hilarous local history, a celebration of the truly weird and an unrivalled insight into that strangest of human characteristics -- the desire to collect things. ...
