Product Description
A striking new feature of the welfare systems in many Western countries is the extent to which market relations have permeated social services. Conceptions of 'risk management' now dominate the way parents and children are responded to, while new technologies aim to 'measure' their relationship with state service providers. Bureaucratic control is increasing, while resources are reduced. These factors have led to the demise of the traditional role of the social worker as one who engages with the client in a supportive encounter. Professional competence within social work is increasingly tied to 'mastering' scientific knowledge and new technical skills. The result of collaboration between authors from Canada, Britain and Australia, Social Work in a Corporate Era offers a critical overview of these developments and their implications. It provides a re-evaluation of the assumptions and practices of the critical social work tradition and explores the possibility of rebuilding an 'emancipatory' social work. The authors aim to disentangle the debate between Marxism, feminism and antiracism, in the context of both postmodern challenges and the corporate restructuring of the welfare state.Calling for the development of a new politics of social work practice, this book addresses many of the urgent issues facing welfare state practitioners in health and social services today. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Transformed 'sames' but no references to main influences received
I always find it interesting reviews on leadership and more 'adds' and new insights on this important social role. What really upset me is when there are no references for the influences authors uses when writing a book. If you do not agree, see pages 198 - 200. Clearly the model used there is Elliott Jaque's and G. Stamp levels of work, complexity of work. But no references to them. Why not? Putting references will it decrease the importance of the work? Seeing this, I just cannot support the book since I see some lack of elegance. ... Read more

Survey Our Literary Landscape From the Open Window of Glimmer Train

What drives you to write? How does a particular piece of writing come to exist?

In Inspiration and Discipline, the second volume in our Glimmer Train Guide to Writing Fiction series, more than one hundred accomplished authors set aside talk of character and scene in order to address the more private and elusive aspects of their writing lives. In excerpts from interviews conducted over a seventeen-year period and preserved by the editors of the highly respected literary quarterly Glimmer Train Stories and its supplement Writers Ask, contemporary writers offer insights on such topics as family support (or lack thereof), using autobiographical material, and the responsibility of writing--sharing their own personal and philosophical approaches to this most strange, heartbreaking, and wonderful of artistic vocations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best. Series. EVERRRRR.
Alright, I just finished gushing about book one and HAVE to do the same for this one. This picks up where the first one left off - the inspiration and discipline needed to create.

You ever go to a booksigning and wish you had the time to ask the author all the questions you have about such issues? Imagine over 100 of them sharing with you, in a fantastic volume you can refer to again and again.

When I read this book, I get so excited that I rush to finish whichever "glimmer" an author is sharing and RUN to get back to work on my own stuff. I just threw the book down so I could sing both their praises this minute, and I will fvcking STALK the editors at Writer's Digest if I have to in order to make sure Volume 3 is on the way!LOL

You *must* own both of these books. You can read them again and again, just like I plan to, and because they are so hefty, you are bound to rediscover thoughts from the authors that resonate anew the second and third time around.

Can't get ENOUGH.

5-0 out of 5 stars From dealing with writer's block, to writing as therapy, to how reading shapes writing, "Inspiration And Discipline" is engaging
Adroitly co-edited by Susan Burmeister-Brown and Linda B. Swanson-Davies, "The Glimmer Train: Guide To Writing Fiction - Inspiration And Discipline" is a compact, 444-page compendium of contributions by professional authors and writers on the subject of their personal and philosophical approaches to writing for a living. The second volume of the acclaimed 'Glimmer Train Guide to Writing Fiction' series from Writer's Digest Press, "Inspiration And Discipline" focuses upon the more private aspects of a writer's life including family, friends, the incorporation of autobiographical material into their literary work, the responsibilities associated with writing professionally, the artistic nature of a writer's vocation, and so much more. From dealing with writer's block, to writing as therapy, to how reading shapes writing, "Inspiration And Discipline" is engaging and informative, as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking. Anyone aspiring to write professionally should take the time to read (and re-read) "The Glimmer Train: Guide To Writing Fiction - Inspiration And Discipline". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vegetable Quiche is Outstanding!
I decided to make a recipe from the book to take to a women's group meeting that was scheduled in the morning. I made the unique rice-crust vegetable quiche recipe and was thrilled that I did. It sat up beautifully in my 9 x 13-inch pan; cut squarely; and was so delicious!

My group of 24 loved the recipe and the best part--there were people present that couldn't eat gluten and had to avoid wheat. Most "egg bakes" have bread...this recipe doesn't call for any wheat products...so it was a double winner.

Recipes in this book work! And, people sing your praises for a long time because they remember good food!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally tasty, nutritionally responsible
If you love food, love to cook and eat, and suspect that this will ultimately kill you, get this cookbook today!Cooking A La Heart is proof that healthy eating doesn't have to be bland. There's something for everyone in this book--red meat eaters will be delighted as well as vegetarians. The replacement recipes for everything from salad dressings to Shake and Bake are absolutely delicious, and not one has been a disappointment. There's a coating for baked chicken that's essentially non-fat dry milk combined with a lot of paprika, some powdered chicken boullion, black pepper, dry mustard and Italian herbs. You put it in a bag, shake up some skinless chicken pieces in it, and bake at 375 degrees for an hour or so.The result is sublime, and totally unexpected. It's a little spicy, and the chicken absolutely melts in your mouth.

Of course, since this is a heart-healthy cookbook, there's the obligatory introduction with facts and figures about salt, fat and their relationship to heart disease and stroke, and it's interesting, but the bottom line is that these recipes taste good and are responsible choices for daily consumption. They don't require a lot of weird equipment or ingredients, aren't at all difficult to prepare and the nutrition and exchange information is at the end of each recipe.

If you're transitioning into healthy eating, this is a great start. An added bonus is to know you're doing something really good for yourself and your family. If anyone in your household already has heart issues, or you're interested in being proactive, this is a wonderful addition to your cookbook shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just first rate!
If you think heart healthy eating has to be bland or with no variety, tyr this. There are a wide variety of familiar dishes, such as chili, stews and fish dishes.Like one of the other reviewers, my copy is starting to fall apart also. I had gone through a stack of healthy eating cookbooks and this one is the best!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Food, Poor Bookbinding.
The recipes are excellent, but the cookbook itself is falling apart.Maybe because I use it so often. You will get better tasting results from this cookbook than from many of the other heart healthy cookbooks.I wish the publisher had included pictures of the dishes. This book has healthy versions of many of my favorite dishes from childhood, including pork chops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great food!
My husband had a heart attack so I bought this book to cook foods for him that I thought would be more healthy for him to eat.I don't know that much about nutrition, but I do know that these are some of the best tasting recipes that I have ever cooked...from any cookbook of any kind...and I have been cooking for a long time!I would recommend this book to anyone, heart problem or not! ... Product Description
For more than a decade, the literary quarterly Glimmer Train has sought out and championed the most compelling short fiction written today, by both established luminaries and fresh new voices. This stunning new anthology probes the whole range of human relationships -- lovers, friends, family members, spouses, even one's beliefs and dreams.

In "Beneath the Earth of Her," acclaimed writer Karen E. Outen delicately probes the life of a loving, passionate married couple at odds over the prospect of having children. In "Gary Garrison's Wedding Vows," novelist Ron Carlson offers a poignant and delightful tale about a young woman who escapes the rigors of academia and finds love and purpose at a bird sanctuary in Utah. And in "The Marvelous Yellow Cage," O. Henry Award-winner Charlotte Forbes examines an elderly woman's relationships with her estranged children, her deceased husband, her loyal housekeeper, and a lifetime's accumulation of possessions. Stories by Quinn Dalton, Louise Erdrich, and a host of other writers dig deeply into the joys and sorrows of human connection -- enlarging our perspective and refining the language of the heart. Where Love Is Found is a valentine for literary lovers and a delicious treat for those who crave short fiction by some of today's finest writers. ... Read more

Really made me think about life. How unpredictable it is, and how much generosity there is inside and out there. Good, good stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid book of stories!
I am touched by the stories contained in Where Love is Found. It's truly a treasury of very special stories that will remain with me. As the book cover accurately states: It is a valentine for literary lovers and a delicious treat for those who crave short fiction by some of today's finest writers. A very meaningful read indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I love this anthology! From the very personal (and rather unusual) dedication by the editors through to the last page of the last story, the book is filled with characters who summon up the courage and compassion to meaningfully connect. It is clear that even in this often harsh world--and in spite of endless obstacles--our humanity survives. Where Love Is Found is a beauty. ... Read more

Glimmer Train presents literary short stories by award-winning and upcoming writers. Here are some excerpts:

Cheri Johnson
Guralnick
Whenever one of those little wolves came in on the same pitch as another, the first wolf lifted or dropped its voice to make it sound as if the pack were growing all the time.

Susan Perabo
Why They Run the Way They Do
Sweetie,Tommy says miserably. And right then it becomes apparent that one of us is going to start crying. I m not sure which of us, but either way it s something to be thwarted at all costs.

James Sepsey
Not When a Day Can Be This Good
You re thirty-seven. I need you to be a man. Like your father, your grandfather, your great-grandfather. All men. God, you d think it d run in the family at some point.

D.B.C. Pierre
Interview by Jennifer Levasseur and Kevin Rabalais
I never quite believe writers who say they re up at seven a.m. to write a thousand words. They have a cup of tea, and then write two thousand words after lunch. I can t see that happening to me.

Antonya Nelson
Falsetto
He had never been an ordinary boy. He was so thin that people grew angry when he wouldn t eat.

Deborah Tarnoff
Crazy Ukraine Girl
All over the world people are preoccupied with building memorials to help them remember. But the smart ones are busy forgetting.

Susan Petrone
This Is How It Happened
I don t think any of them are in actual denial: they understand that I am dying, they re just getting used to the idea in incremental fashion.

Elissa Minor Rust
In My Mother s Trailer
My girlfriend s son, Charlie, is watching a boy about his age resuscitate a frog on tonight s news. To be fair, the boy is only pretending to resuscitate the frog, a re-enactment of the actual event, which happened earlier in the week.

Christiana Langenberg
Half of What I Know
The theory is the dog committed suicide. My father tells me this when I get home from school, after he says Luigi is gone, and I ask him what he means.

Mary Gaitskill
Interview by Sarah Anne Johnson
I was also going through physical changes, what they euphemistically call thechange of life.It was like the ground was shifting under my feet, so it was hard for me to write from a solid place.

Janice Soderling
Rented Rooms
There is a succession of rooms, all of them temporary, as life is temporary. Some of them, many of them, are filled with laughter, with friendship, with affection, with hope.

Andrew Roe
Please Don t Tell Me ThatWe go on one of those streets that seems to repeat itself every few blocks: gas stations, Home Depots, Taco Bells, Burger Kings. After that some apartments or a storage place or a used-car lot, and then the same scene all over again.
