4-0 out of 5 stars In good condition
Book may have been in good condition when shipped but was damaged somewhat in shipping. Good deal for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful spiritual read.
This book is a wonderful spiritual read for anyone that enjoys reading Christian fiction.

I was surprised to learn how much of the LDS belief's are very similiar to what I have learned from the King James Bible.

It is perfectly delightful and gives one reason to pause and think about life and eternity.

Worth reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chasing Paradise
I am not LDS, so some of the ideas were very new to me. I really enjoyed the concept of the deceased making contact with the living and the afterlife depictions. Grabbed me on the first page and didn't let me go until the last page!

Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints . . . (D&C 84:4)

In the near future, Tad and Emma North and their children live in a United States that is growing increasingly wicked. The Norths and their extended family notice that many Latter-day Saints are being deceived by alluring temptations, and they wonder how much longer the Lord will allow American society to continue its downward spiral.

Then comes an invitation from Church leaders for the Saints to gather together. This invitation isn’t well-accepted—and even openly mocked—but those faithful Church members who trust in the Lord soon find themselves accomplishing monumental tasks. Join these humble yet heroic Saints as they embark on an unprecedented journey to build New Jerusalem.

The Great Gathering, the first novel in the Standing in Holy Places series, paints a vivid picture of exciting prophesied events that still must occur before the Second Coming. 5-0 out of 5 stars LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED
The events in the last days before Christ comes are not all doom and gloom. This book confirms what I have always felt, which is those who follow the Lord and prepare themselves to be obedient to what they have been counseled to do will find great joy and excitement as the Lord prepares the world for his return.Although told from a fictional point, I believe the author has prayerfully considered and has received inspiration for what he has written.I'm not saying things will happen exactly as Mr. Daybell says or written. However, I believe the feelings, choices, experiences will be very similar.I know I felt the holy ghost very strong as I read these books.People like Chad Daybell are being used as a instrument in the Lord's hands to prepare his people for when these events as told to us in scripture will become reality.Thank you Brother Daybell for the blessings you have certainly brought into my life as I have read these books (can't wait for book 4).I feel a greater sense of joy and excitement about the last days as I have ready these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome author
I completely love all the books in this series! It feels like you're right there, which means I feel like the end of the world is here for a few days.Very well written and keeps you hooked in!It's very real and things could happen a lot like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, very well done!
The author has taken his time to masterfully weave in the finer points of LDS doctrine into these books, Just when I thought he'd missed something huge, he brought it into the main storyline. My mother is a non member with a healthy interest in apocalyptic literature, I have been looking for ways to turn her on to a faithful prospective on apocalyptic stories.. I see this as the least confrontational. I recommend this book at the top of my list of LDS fiction. The author appeals to all audiences... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
I did not exactly want to beat my head against a brick wall wilst reading this book, but it still left a lot to be desired. Another sample of LDS fiction that tries to be nothing more than a book involving LDS themes. It's especially sad when one considers that so much more could have been done with it.

Emma is your typical modern Mormon girl, struggling with faith and all the usual problems of contemporary LDS life but without any of realism and emotion. Through strange occurances she is transported back into the past where she finds a way to solve a geneaology mystery.

It's a cute enough story, and that plot isn't horrible, but the characters are so flat and the story so contrived that it's difficult to be half-way impressed. ... Read more

Product Description
It has been a remarkable year since the Saints arrived in Independence, Missouri to establish New Jerusalem. Now it has become a rapidly growing city as Saints from around the world come to Zion. It is a time of relative peace, but there are still several important events that must take place before the Second Coming.

Join the members of the North, Dalton and Brown families as they participate in such memorable events as the dedication of the New Jerusalem Temple, and the discovery and return of the Ten Lost Tribes.

As the Saints devise a plan to regain Salt Lake City from the evil leader Sherem and to create cities of Zion throughout the Rocky Mountains, the Coalition forces have regrouped and are planning another attack that will affect the entire world.

The Rise of Zion, the third novel in the bestelling Standing in Holy Places series, paints a vivid picture of exciting prophesied events that still must occur before the Second Coming. 2-0 out of 5 stars A very, Very, VERY Mormon book
This third book in Daybell's last days series is EXTREMELY Mormon. What I mean is that it studiously avoids any real conflict or graphic portrayal of reality and paints an extremely rosy picture. Daybell's style is very clear and easy to read, but he tends to skim over the surface of almost everything, so the novel reads more like a summary of events than like a full-bodied dramatized treatment that really comes to life.

Still, I found myself sticking with it to find out what happened, even if everything comes very easily to God's righteous people, for whom America is basically depopulated now, leaving the Mormons free to build a huge City of Zion full of gold-plated temples and suburban homes with new carpet and computers.

I like what Daybell does with the ten lost tribes of Israel in this book. Otherwise, it falls pretty flat for me. There's some goofy humor I didn't much enjoy, particularly involving one of the Three Nephites. I wish he would slow down and really render the story with more details, conflict, and drama. For the plot this novel covers, it should be almost twice as long if Daybell were really fleshing everything out properly. This novel seems ideal for about an 11-year-old reader, not an adult looking for anything approaching a deep, nuanced, realistic, fully rendered treatment of an endlessly fascinating topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.....
I had high hopes for this series ofbooks after reading the other reviews.I love end of the world, last days type of books, and the beginning of book 1 of this series started off ok.However, as it progressed, it seemed to be a complilation of other LDS last days series that I had read. The plot seemed very simplistic and there was very little character development. As you read through Books 2 and 3, his timeline seems to deteriorate and the author contridictes himself a couple of times reagarding this.
As for charactor development, don't look for the women to play much of a role in the story.By the time you reach book 3, they are basically background players while the men are the main story, which really isn't much.I also noticed he ends up overlapping two characters and meshing their stories together, which I thought was quite amusing. I found his version of the last days rather black and white, you are either good or bad.The bad people go away and the Mormons are left in peace to build New Jeruselem.Little bit riduculos to me.
Save your money. These books are Utah publishing and culture at its silliest.

The author of the acclaimed Emma Trilogy switches gears in this non-fiction account of his years working as a cemetery sexton.

In this entertaining book readers will meet such characters as a lock-picking ghost, a coffin-chasing cow, a rock band with boorish graveside manners, and Mrs. Robinson, whose leg preceded her to the grave.

Each chapter gives a behind-the-scenes look at different aspects of a sexton's world, including cemetery blunders, meddling spirits, bizarre events, and efforts to outfox the Grim Reaper.

Written in a humorous, tongue-in-cheek style, this collection of the author's actual graveyard adventures is a curiously uplifting book you won't be able to put down-or ever forget! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Thank you, I recieved the book in a timeley manner and it was in great shape!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so much
Unfortunately, I didn't find much reading pleasure in this book. The book covered some very basic details of cemeteries and the mourning process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really interesting book!
This was a fun and interesting read for me of the goings on of what happens in a cemetery. My dad is a sexton and he is the quiet type, so this was fun to read and learn all sorts of information out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put it Down
One of the first draws I had to "One Foot in the Grave: Secrets of a Cemetery Sexton" by Chad Daybell was a review by none other than Find A Grave founder, Jim Tipton.

Tipton writes:

"Finally, a book that glibly exposes the often funny, always poignant truth behind the life of an undertaker."

Touche. Daybell writes about his tenure as cemetery sexton for the local burial grounds of a small community in Utah nestled in the Rocky Mountains. In his five years as sexton, and preceding two years as a part time worker there, Daybell experienced a number of interesting, quirky, and usually fascinating occurrences. It's hard to tell which stories were more strange - those involving the living or those involving the dearly departed!

You'll find anecdotes of both in Daybell's charming and frank expose on the life of a dedicated cemetery worker. I often found myself shaking my head in disbelief or laughing right out loud at some of the bizarre tales Daybell shared about kooky people and restless spirits. Some of his tales are touching, while others are outright scary (I'll admit to a number of chills, and I'm fairly unshakable).

I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through a cemetery worker's life, and the trials, tribulations, ups and downs, scares and smiles that go along with it. Daybell's website's blurb about the book, "This is a collection of true graveyard stories you won't be able to put down", is not false advertising in the least. I read it in one sitting - often pausing to re-read, aloud, some of the wilder passages to my boyfriend.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about the goings-on of graveyards or is interested in what it's actually like to work in a cemetery. Daybell also goes about quashing some age-old myths about burial grounds and provides a wealth of information that even I, a seasoned cemetery-lover, was unaware of. Case in point - even I was surprised to learn that rowdy teenagers nor cantankerous spirits were to blame for the repeated disappearance of grave flowers, trinkets, and statues.

Curious? That and so much more awaits you in this fun and frank work. Daybell writes in an effortless, outright, friendly manner - I often felt I was listening to an old friend regaling me with tales about his job while we shared laughs over a cup of tea. It was one of those books that you feel disappointed to finish - wishing there were still more stories and more time to spend with the author who has been entertaining you for the last few hours.

Grab your copy of One Foot in the Grave today and spend some time getting to know Chad Daybell and learn about his delightful and forever-interesting job as cemetery sexton. You'll be glad you did.

Product Description
I am a special witness of Jesus Christ.
Jesus called me to be one of his apostles when he began his ministry, and for three years I walked and talked with him. I also defended him before the people of Jerusalem, and mourned with him when those people rejected his message. Yet I never truly understood Jesus and his mission until those final, painful days of his life. During that week I watched my dearest friend transform from being not only a powerful teacher and healer, but to become the Savior of the World.

John the Beloved’s role in sharing the final days of the Savior’s life has been overlooked. He stayed close to the Savior during those crucial final hours, becoming an eyewitness to the supreme sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This account is based on John’s own words as found in the Bible.

Based on John’s own words as found in the Bible, the touching storyline combines with the striking artwork to create a wonderful, spiritual reading experience that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. 5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful picture book about John the Baptist
Through the Eyes of John, written by Chad Daybell and illustrated by Rhett E. Murray, offers a unique view into the last few weeks of Jesus' life on earth, as seen through the eyes of John the Apostle. The author cites text from the books of Luke, John and Revelations, using John's own words from the Scriptures to tell of his role as a witness to both Jesus' death and resurrection. The author brings to life both the characters of John and Jesus in this wonderful book. The opening page reads:

I am a special witness of Jesus Christ. Jesus called me to be one of his apostles when he began his ministry, and for three years I walked and talked with him. I also defended him before the people of Jerusalem, and mourned with him when those people rejected his message. Yet I never truly understood Jesus and his mission until those final, painful days of his life. During that week I watched my dearest friend transform from being not only a powerful teacher and healer, but to become the Savior of the World.

What I Like: Everything. The book is well-written and closely follows the Scriptures. It is written so children can understand it, but it's also interesting for adults. I know I enjoyed reading it.

The artwork is truly beautiful. The rich, realistic paintings add depth and dimension to the book. Interestingly enough, there are twelve paintings in the book (perhaps to represent the twelve diciples). As an added bonus, the last two pages of the book offer the "Author's Commentary" on each painting. This section provides an interesting perspective on the artwork itself.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Age Appeal: The book is written for 9-to-12-year-olds, but its language is appealing for adults, too. Younger children would probably enjoy the book if it were read and explained to them. 5 stars
