5-0 out of 5 stars Romance and danger in Ireland.
A really engrossing Historical Romance. The Setting is Ireland in the late Nineteenth Century.
Amberleigh Dunne is the daughter of a widowed Irish Merchant. Unfortunately, he was a bankrupt and suicide.
Nearly destitute Amberleigh, is hired by Lady Devora St.Clare to be the companion to her stepdaughter, the delicate, fey heiress, Elaine St.Clare.Amberleigh arrives at the St.Clare's Irish estate, Carnhaven.
Here the adventure begins. Things are not as they seem at Carnhaven. Motives are hidden. Manipulation and deceit is as common a pastime as riding to the hounds.
There is political intrigue. Patriotic rebels, the underground United Irish, are at work fomenting unrest in the neighborhood. Captain Mayfair of the British Army and the local English landlords are hard at work trying to capture the ringleaders. Someone at Carnhaven is involved with the Rebels and The Cause.
Amberleigh finds that her true purpose is to serve less as a companion and more as a ruse. A tool to be used in Lady Devora's affairs and schemes. Elaine is involved in a secret love affair which results in a pregnancy and a secret confinement.
Amberleigh finds herself torn between two men. The charming, feckless Devlin Quade and the sardonic, reserved Lord Hugh Davenant. Who can she trust?
This is all very entertaining, with a strong historical background. The characters are three dimensional with understandable motivations and actions. The mystery and romance are equally well done. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it Twice
I thought that it was a great novel. I completly agree that [the lack of sexual scenes] has a positive impact on the book.I liked the character developement and Amberleigh's sprightly character. It is a fun read and worth a shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amberleigh is definitely a keeper!
This is a great book!I have read a few romance books and have always been discouraged by their sexual content. One major plus about Amberleigh is that there are no sex scenes at all.The book focuses on a young girl who is forced into a lower quality life than she once hoped for, by a friend's mother and a costly death. She accepts this way of life, and therefore proves her true friendship. She struggles with self-image problems, but also stays true to herself and her ideals. It is easy to identify with Amberleigh and her problems. One also can't help but have sympathy for her, as she struggles with more than one dark secret that could cost her life. This is definitely a keeper, and has long since found a spot on my shelf! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, Fast
Book arrived in perfect condition, well wrapped, and it got to me in record speed. I'd buy from this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Sword & Sorcery fare
I'll be honest - it has been years since I last read this book, but I remember reading it several times. It will appeal more to a young-adult audience as it is a very typical sword and sorcery fare.I will say these were among the first fantasy novels I read and I enjoyed them at the time; they were instrumental in starting me on a lifetime of reading. When I re-read them when I was older, although I found the story flatter than I did as a youngster, I still had fun with it.This is book 2 of, I believe, a 4 or 5 book series, so don't expect a nice tidy wrap-up.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor fantasy!!
Since nobody has bothered to write a review on this book, i'll do it in case you are considering to get this book. This is the second book in the sword and circlet trilogy and its more boring and stupid than the first book (keeper of edanvant). Neither the plot will not grab your interest nor the writing skill. Even the characterisation is very thin with simple and stupid dialouges. So I'll suggest you to skip this book and look out for some better one or else you are just wasting your money. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Revenge is a dish best served cold
I know you are suppose to suspend a certain amount of belief while reading fiction, but who would strip themselves of all respectability to enact revenge on a parent that has shown repeatedly they do not care for them. Rue decides to publically embarrass her father for taking away everything she holds dear, even if it means becoming an actress and taking a lover. Her father takes great pleasure in hurting Rue, and it's obvious why. All of Rue's schemes hurt her more than her father. I wanted to tap her forehead and ask if anyone was home. After a couple of failed attempts she decides to list the aid of a group of men that also were victims of her father's evil doings. They lead her to the Earl o Argyle who has his own agenda regarding her father's downfall.

Rue was not a likable person I could not buy into her actions. She was willful and only cared about her own feelings. More than one person was hurt because ofher, it wasn't until near the end of the book she showed remorse. Argyle was a typical rake he took what Rue offered and dropped her when he was done. A warning for readers that don't like their H/h cheating, Rue lives with her loverand sleeps with Argyle. It was interesting how she maneuvered one to sleep with the other while in the same house. What I did enjoy about the book was that it also was set on Barbados, and the author briefly discussed Britain's role in the salve trade. Was there a HEA, you be the judge.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugly storyline... sex as payback.
Ugh! Yuck!
I did not enjoy this re-issued 1980's bodice buster.
Innocent Rue despises her hypocritical father. In an adolescent attempt to shame him, she intends to seduce a sophisticated, wordly rake. She hopes to convince the rake to ruin her dastardly father in exchange for her sexual favors.
Varian, the rake du jour, is more than happy to out manipulate this manipulative spoiled miss. He takes what she offers and goes on his merry way. So who's ruined?
I found all of the characters to be unappealing and unredeemable. The story was fast paced and well written but ultimately unpleasant.
Not recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfinished masterpiece
I read this book over 15 years ago, it's part of what's supposed to be a trilogy that never got past book two so I warn you, it's a really good, imaginative, unique read (of its time)that will hook you and leave you whining to the author (yeah, so what, it deserves to be finished) for more. Female time traveler meet chauvinist, challenges male/female concepts, is empowered, faces dangers and a society full of secrets that threaten her continued existence, and falls into the role of the heroine...But don't read it if you can't handle waiting for completion.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
i first came across cup of clay while doing a book report for my ninth grade class, and was stunned when the story knocked me off my feet. i dug through a million layers of sellers to get the second book, and have written letters to carole nelson douglas begging her to write the third. ms. douglas, if you're reading this - BLACKMAIL YOUR PUBLISHERS! finish the story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I disagree with some others who found this book lacking!I enjoyed the second as well, and I am desperately trying to find a 3rd!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
I have always despised novels that tried to mix fantasy and reality, but Cup of Clay was a wonderful breath of fresh air.The characters are neither perfect nor heinous, but realistically flawed. Though some elementsof the plot were predictable, there were quite a few unexpected twists. Finally the unique setting and culture drew me into the world of Veil andkept me enthralled until the end. The pleasure continues in the secondnovel "Seed upon the Wind" and I am anxiously awaiting the thirdbook in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars not GREAT, but good enough
I'm a VORACIOUS reader. And this was good enough. I've had books that were so bad I couldn't get through the first chapter, much less finish the book. But, I liked this book, and the follow-up book, and I'm waiting for thethird now. Granted, when I read this I was still in Highschool. Trying tofind a fantasy book that entertains as well as feeds a highschool girlssense of growing feminism is hard to do. Usually, the women in fantasybooks are extremes. Either powerful beyond belief or weak beyond bearing.Alison is just normal. Yes, she's hypocritical in that she adores NativeAmerican philosophy and doesn't like the Desymene society. But that's trueto her character. She's a Caucasian female of the 90's who is a reporter. Alot of caucasians (and other ethnicities in america) enjoy saying "Oh,I have *Indian* in my family" but they don't truly understand orrespect the traditions that ARE very similar in some instances to theDesmeyne traditions.

Either way, I enjoyed this book because it appealedto the girl in me who wants to do something special, to be somethingspecial, and who wants to save the world...even if it's not my own. ... Read more
