Product Description
Being an account of another adventure of Prof. George E. Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Prof. Summerlee, and Mr. E. D. Malone, the discoverers of The Lost World.
'...bobtail of insignificant satellites, we float under the same daily conditions towards some unknown end, some squalid catastrophe which will overwhelm us at the ultimate confines of space, where we are swept over an etheric Niagara or dashed upon some unthinkable Labrador. I see no room here for the shallow and ignorant optimism of your correspondent, Mr. James Wilson MacPhail, but many reasons why we should watch with a very close and interested attention every indication of change in those cosmic surroundings upon which our own ultimate fate may depend."
"Man, he'd have made a grand meenister," said McArdle. "It just booms like an organ. Let's get doun to what it is that's troubling him."
The general blurring and shifting of Fraunhofer's lines of the spectrum point, in my opinion, to a widespread cosmic change of a subtle and singular character. Light from a planet is the reflected light of the sun. Light from a star is a self-produced light. But the spectra both from planets and stars have,...'

3-0 out of 5 stars It got better as it went along
This is rather a science fiction novel, not what one would expect from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is not part of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

A group of people wait in a room with several tanks of oxygen, knowing that an ether is covering the earth and is killing everyone as it moves. It finally arrives in England, and those in the room watch as everyone in sight of their house dies. The observers have only about a day and a half of oxygen, and when it runs out, they find that the deadly ether has gone past and that they can live outside.

I won't tell you the ending, of course.

The first couple of chapters were rather boring. It became more interesting when the observers saw trains crashing and other vehicles out of control.

I don't feel bad that I read it, nor do I feel much else.If you haven't read anything by Doyle except Sherlock Holmes, you might want to pick this up.Or if you have a lot of time on your hands.Or ifyou just can't decide on anything else.Or if you're life is too exciting and you crave a bit of boredom. ... This book is a real delight. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Thoroughly enjoyable. Witty one liners. Endearing central character. Adventures that provoke the spectrum of emotions. Fabulous summer read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storytelling Gems
Doyle Fans who've read and reread all the Sherlocks should give these fun stories a go.Brig. Gerard is kind of a French Flashman: the hero of every battle (at least by his own lights) when he's not winning the hearts and charms of any beautiful woman in range.Gerard is the ultimate egoist, and we love him for it-- listening to him relating these exploits over a flagon of wine, we can forgive him for perhaps exaggerating a bit here and there....

Thanks to Doyle for creating another memorable character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I loved reading the book so much, I keep reading it over and over again.

It is surprising how funny Conan Doyle could be sometimes. Brigadier Gerard is a wonderfully conceited, rather dim-witted but brave and generous-hearted cavalry officer in Napoleon's Army. His adventures are adelight to read. ... Read more

Let me try to reason it out. This woman, by her own explanation, can dominate my nervous organism. She can project herself into my body and take command of it. She has a parasite soul; yes, she is a parasite, a monstrous parasite. She creeps into my frame as the hermit crab does into the whelk's shell. I am powerless! What can I do? I am dealing with forces of which I know nothing. And I can tell no one of my trouble. They would set me down as a madman. Certainly, if it got noised abroad, the university would say that they had no need of a devil-ridden professor. And Agatha! No, no, I must face it alone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well off Conan Doyle's beaten track ... horror with a Victorian flair!
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is, of course, best known for his Sherlock Holmes and Professor Challenger characters. What is much less well known is that Doyle was fascinated with spiritualism and the paranormal. Indeed, his fascination may well be categorized as a morbid obsession to find proof of existence beyond the grave dating from depression which began after the death of his wife, Louisa, in 1906. Doyle's readers, at least, can be pleased with the results. His futile efforts at quasi-scientific exploration of paranormal phenomena provided fodder for an enormous number of short stories and novellas that could hardly be more different from the focused attention on data and facts - it only counts if it can be seen, felt, observed and measured - that is seen in the Sherlock Holmes canon. These little known stories, exemplified by THE PARASITE, can best be categorized within the horror genre.

Austin Gilroy, a physiologist, is a realist and is firm in his belief that the paranormal is hokum. On the other hand, his friend, Professor Wilson is a dyed-in-the-wool true believer and, with a view to convincing his skeptical friend, introduces him to a "skilled" psychic, Miss Penclosa. Despite his rejection of her amorous advances, Gilroy is maddened to discover that he is falling under the power of Penclosa's abilities and that he is being forced into the humiliating position of unwilling and subservient love slave to Miss Penclosa. And he is positively horrified to realize that he is contemplating the mutilation and murder of his current fiancée with a vial of sulphuric acid.

THE PARASITE is an enjoyable novella that can be comfortably devoured in a single sitting and atmospheric literature that exemplifies Victorian behaviour and beliefs. The story itself, while hardly up to the grisly standards of 21st century horror, is typically open-ended and, like so many Twilight Zone episodes, leaves the reader with a pleasant feeling that all is not as it seems and any number of possible resolutions might be imagined.

Highly recommended if you'd like to sample some Arthur Conan Doyle writing that is well off the beaten track! Those readers interested in pursuing more of the same might explore the anthologies ROUND THE FIRE STORIES and THE HORROR OF THE HEIGHTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Suspensful, Good Characterization
Other non-Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have left me wishing he'd just stuck to Holmes. Not this one.

In this story, Doyle does not try to incorporate the deductive reasoning of Holmes, and he has created a very believable and interesting character who tells the story from the first person."I" is not only hypnotized by a woman but his mind is at times completely taken over by her.She even forces him to pledge his love for her.Through sheer force of will, he is able to counter her control but never for long. After he tells her that he hates her, she makes him do and say things that make him look like a lunatic. And then...

Short.Fun to read. And like I said, this story works because it really is a departure from the Holmes character and doesn't need Holmes to make it work.

What can I say but I liked it?

From the files of Sherlock Holmes to the history of the transvall.....I didn't know Doyle had done this piece.Nor did I realize he made multiple revisions as more "facts" were revealed to him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A study of corruption
Does money, great whacks of it, destroy every thing and every one it touches, even those who start with the best intentions ? The story centers around a new-comer to town, the mysterious Raffle Haw, his obvious riches and his desire to use his fortune for the good of the people. The provenance of the money is slowly revealed to the reader (you will have to smile at the science of that one !) as the consequences of Haw's philanthropy develop. Well written, nicely spaced story-line, believable caracters, this book has it all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's old is new again
An excellent read! Published in 1898 this novel tells the story of a small group of western tourists on holiday in northern africa. Taken hostage by a nomadic tribe of arab muslims, these westerners are faced with the stark choice of conversion to Islam or death. A facinating commentary on the cultural divide between western Christianity and eastern Islam with an insightful dialouge around the "white man's burden" as only the English could tell it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The burden of the white man
This is a very significant book about the general opinons of Western people about middle eastern-arabs at the end of 19th century. The tale is about how tourists on a steamer have been taken hostage by a gang of arabs, and how "the heroic" british army saved them. What is behind the tale is what has been codified by kipling:"the burden of the white man". The superior civilized Anglo saxons and their mission toward uncivilised barabarians. The depiction of natives in mild racists words is what, unfortunately, has not changed so much in western opinions (even if hidden behind layers of politically correct). Very instructive for whoever is interested in the root of racisms, as described by E. Said in "orientalism". A very funny part of the book isthe contrast between the arrogant french tourist who at the begining criticizes the wise brits, but by the end is grateful and convinced. Replace brits with americans, and the book could have been written in 2001. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Low readability in a number of passages
When I ordered this book, I was not informed of the production process. At the reception of the book I read "How We Made This Book" on page IV.I quote: "We automated the typing, proof reading and design of this book using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software on a scanned copy of the original rare book. That allowed us to keep the cost as low as possible."
Nice. If I had known this before I whouldn't have bought it, for I had already worked with OCR and found out that you often get some odd results as OCR frequently does not recognize characters and vomits parts of sentences in some not yet discovered language. For example: "wittTfijeacHaL", or:"Jf Jhev will notgCL-thfij are shot down, theijJeiUiandsbeing cut off". That's what the reader of this book is confronted with. Okay, not on every page, but too often for me to enjoy reading it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, best remembered as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, produced an excellent historical drama with The Refugee, a story about the Huguenots. Although Doyle wasn't a Christian, he writes with a great deal of sympathy as he describes the plight of French Protestants in the late 17th century.

The courage and resolution of the Hugenots was legendary as the majority went into exile rather than recant their evangelical faith in Christ. Consequently, they lost family, friends, property, and employment. It's a cruel chapter in France's history.

The novel begins in France but finishes in Canada. Along the way we visit the inner sanctum of King Louis' palace, travel through the ice-berg infested waters of the north Atlantic sea, and journey in the wilderness of New France.

Doyle also wrote The Tragedy of the Korosko,: And the Green Flag, and Other Stories of War and Sport, ... Read more

Forget the Michael Crichton book (and Spielberg movie) thatcopied the title. This is the original: the terror-adventure tale ofThe Lost World. Writing not long after dinosaurs first invadedthe popular imagination, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spins a yarn about anexpedition of two scientists, a big-game hunter, and a journalist (thenarrator) to a volcanic plateau high over the vast Amazon rain forest. The bickering of the professors (a type Doyle knew well from hismedical training) serves as witty contrast to the wonders of flora andfauna they encounter, building toward a dramatic moonlit chase scenewith a Tyrannosaurus Rex. And the character of Professor George E.Challenger is second only to Sherlock Holmes in the outrageous forceof his personality: he's a big man with an even bigger ego, and if youcan grit your teeth through his racist behavior toward NativeAmericans, he's a lot of fun. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining if somewhat dated classic
This is a fascinating novel, almost more from an anthropological point of view than a literary one.The novel follows in the footsteps of H. Rider Haggard and Jules Verne and H. G. Wells in providing a ripping yarn.Fantasy and SF has come a long way since 1912, the date of THE LOST WORLD's publication, but this still manages to be a highly entertaining tale.

The book shows its age.The anthropology is pre-Evans-Pritchard, who managed to dismantle the notion of "primitive" peoples to show the internal and substantial logic driving the thought of so-called primitive peoples. The world view is intensely patriarhical, with the four men investigating the lost plateau viewing everything through an Edwardian filter.

Just a few examples of the white paternalism through which all of the characters view the world.Gladys, the object ofthe affection of Malone, the book's narrator, states bluntly that she would only marry a man who had gained great fame (it apparently being something that she could not herself consider achieving). The pterodactyls were described as being exceptionally patriarchal, with the males perched upon high, overlooking the females and the young that they cared for.Another small group of dinosaurs were described as no less than a nuclear family, with mother, father, and brood of young.Throughout the story is the stock faithful negro, given no less than the name of Zambo, who apparently has any desires of his own, apart from the desire to serve and please his masters. The attitudes of the four explorers to Zambo is very much that of humans towards a pet dog. When the explorers meet Indians on the plateau, the virtually worship their white delivers, and they have a strong sense of private property (which in most anthropological studies are shown to arise with agricultural societies, not in herding and hunter/gatherer societies). There is also the disdain of other racial groups, especially those who are ethnically mixed; the most villanous character in the book is, not unexpectedly, a "half-breed."In other words, wherever you go, there you are. That is, wherever they go, they find perfect representations of Edwardian British society.

Despite all this, and despite the rather stilted prose in which the book is written, the book is a lot of fun.It is not only the romantic adventure story that is appealing, but the now-quaint portrait of upper class British society in the last days before the First World War.All in all this is not a great novel, but it is for all that a most enjoyable one.

5-0 out of 5 stars For What It's Worth...
I read this classic by Doyle about fourteen years ago or so, and can't speak much to the details with my faded memory of it. But I think it bears mentioning that it left me with the exuberant feeling that it was THE MOST ENJOYABLE book I have ever read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Want classics? Buy Dover Thrift!
I was a little wary in buying classics from Dover Thrift; these are the books I'd want to keep for many years, not just read and discard. But my caution was undeserved! These editions are not flimsy or printed on bible paper; they're sturdy with a pleasing layout and size (I prefer the slightly larger books to the 4.2x6.8 inch standard paperback). This size allows for comfortable reading without damaging the spine like the smaller versions. Highlighting doesn't seep through the paper, an important trait for English majors like myself, and the book is lightweight and the binding tight.

So for $3 I was able to buy a book that's normally $7 - with no drawbacks! Thank you Dover Thrift! Also, check out their collections (Jane Austen Collection, Supernatural & Ghost Stories Collection) - Several books for only $8? Awesome! The collection I got was 26 Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural - six books. :)

PS: Works with author copyrights (written copyrights vanish 100 years after an author's death), are generally not carried by Dover. :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Dinosaur Fun
"The Lost World" by Arthur Conan Doyle is an exciting adventure tale in which four turn-of-the-century explorers strike out to verify the claims of a recently-discovered lost world in which dinosaurs roam free. This story is exciting every step of the way and climaxes when the intrepid explorers reach the lost world and encounter a hoast of beasts, dinosaurs, and dangers. If you're a fan of dinosaurs or adventure stories, then this is definitely a story to pick up and read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A grand romp back to the Age of Exploration
What if dinosaurs had somehow survived, living in isolation in some remote, unexplored corner of the world? This classic adventure story starts with just that premise, and builds it into a lively tale of exploration and discovery.Mostly told in a first person narrative, the reader is taken into the very heart of the story as a team heads off to South America to verify a discovery that is impossible for a skeptical world to believe.Written almost a century ago, Doyle's novel takes us back to the age of Empire and Exploration, when anything seemed possible, and the there were still places on the Earth that had not yet been fully explored. This story grabs the reader and doesn't let go until the very last page. ...
