My first Dr. Seuss book! And I am an adult.
It is my first Dr. Seusss book.I purchased it because I like turtles.I love the illustrations and the rhyming text.I was so dyslexic I learned to read with rhyming books.I don't know how I missed these. I really enjoyed the book even at my age.

I love this book, I think it teaches a great lesson in disguise.I usually don't "get" some of Suess's short stories (not a fan of one fish two fish) but this book is good!Things make sense (haha) and the stories flow very well.Love yertle the turtle, for sure, too cute!my 2 year old and 7 year old enjoy when I read this book to them

Dr. Seuss. Writer. Poet. Revolutionary?
Well, he certainly had an interest in sharing political views. Whether this is good or bad depends, I guess, on whether you agree with him. He did it in a way that's not too preachy or annoying, that's a point in his favor.

Here we have three stories, whose names I don't care to remember at this time. (The book is visiting Grandma with my nieces, so I have to post from memory. Forgive me.)

In the first one - Yertle the Turtle! - we have a grandiose turtle king who insists on stacking all the turtles in his kingdom so he can see more and more and be king of more and more. And so it goes on until the one at the bottom, poor Mack, decides that he has rights too and shakes the whole throne. And now all turtles are free, the way turtles (and all people) are meant to be.

Then we have one about a bird who wants more and more feathers until... okay, I can't remember this one, but it's a moral about selfishness and vanity (I believe).

And the third, which I adore, is about a bear and a rabbit arguing over who is best until they're bested by a worm who claims he can see "all the way around the world" but, alas, all he sees is two big fools with nothing better to do than to argue about who is better than who!

So we have three good stories, three easy morals (two and a half? I cannot, for the life of me, remember that middle moral!), and a nifty green cover. I like this book a lot.

One note: This book is written for school-aged children. Please, don't get it for your baby.

The copy of Yertle we received is the party edition, with a metallic green hardcover; I wanted the old style cover. Still, a party cover is appropriate for a birthday gift, binding seems solid, and it is the original everything else we love. Great lesson in the Yertle story, where the turtle king learns a lesson about wanting too much when he should be content with his comfortable, happy existence. Impossible to find in stores! Great buy
Another fantastic narration by Dr. Seuss! Kinds love it, the perfect reading for bed-time. The car is back to its antics and has several new companions. Nice pace, very well narrated. We weren't able to find this anywhere in local stores, fortunately found it here. Lovely book, definitely recommended for your little ones!

Another Classic Tale With More Classic Rhymes
The mischief continues as the ever troublesome cat in the hat returns. Although not as good as the first book, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back," is another classic Dr. Seuss book told with clever rhymes, and aided with beautiful colorful illustrations. Once again, Cat in the Hat, drops in on the unsuspecting kids and makes a mess. The chuckles received while watching the cat make his messes, and the rather unorthodox ways that he and his helpers clean the mess up are the main storylines of the book.

My child loves this book, just like the first one.

Love Dr. Seuss
As always, Dr. Seuss has done a great job capturing the imagination and attention of children with this wonderful book.(This book is actually one taken from a full-length book he wrote, "If I Ran The Circus".)The fact that it is a board book is a major plus as I have a 2 year old who can be rough on books.The only thing I did not realize was that it is has flaps to open and see pictures underneath.I am not crazy about the flaps as they could be torn off but other than that, my kids and I just love it!

It was a bit difficult for me to figure out the order for the story since I'd never read it until I had to read it to my class, so the pull out book was an interesting challenge. Yes I know what kind of an airheadsound like.
But a cute story.

Never let go
Our daughter isn't old enough to read this book yet and we hardly have had a chance to read it to her because the wonderful bath time format has made this one of her favorite toys with which to play. She carries it with her around the house and flips and bites the pages. We can only imagine how much fun she'll have when she can read it and use it in the bath.

I bought this book to read to my 16 month old sonSam.We love Dr Seuss in castellano and this translation is very good as it still plays on the illiteration and not a straight translation.

Enhancing Childrens Imagination
The Cat in the Hat is an excellent book for beginning readers. This book allows children to enhance and expand their imagination. The main character, a talking cat, causes distruction in the house of two children while trying to have fun. Dr. Seuss uses repetition and rhyming words through out the book to grasp the attention of young children. The Cat in the Hat is an all-time children's favorite.

A Classic Tale of a Mischievous Cat
My child really enjoyed this tale, just as I did when I was a kid.

In this timeless classic, Dr. Suess uses rhymes and animals to create a story full of mischief, fun and entertainment. Two children and their pet fish are stuck inside on a rainy day, only to have their boredom broken by the antics of a mischievous cat that storms into the house and entertains them and creates a huge mess in the process. In the end though, the cat cleans up after himself, becoming a somewhat good role model despite his previous carelessness.

The before mentioned rhymes are used in this story to represent the text in a grabbing and mind provoking way that my child loves. I hope you give this classic book a try...if you haven't already!

Orwellian Fantasy

A neglectful parent, a subversive cat, a piscine Big Brother, and twin automatons.

People regard Alice In Wonderland as a shining beacon of literary nonsense, but The Cat in the Hat more than holds its own.

Illustrated in simple primary colors of red and blue, this is a book your kids will love but with which you ought to have a rather more complicated relationship. Ted was some kind of writer to spin a story so silly (in a child's eyes) and yet so deviant.

The questions that may be asked are myriad: Should Sally and her brother have called 9-1-1 the moment the Cat broke in? Why does this "Cat" wear gloves? Does ennui invite catastrophe? Why are young children home alone? Did their mother set up the entire plot? Why did Seuss choose a Darwin fish to be the eyes, ears, and mouthpiece for Big Brother? Did the circus ever find their performing cat? And perhaps, was it all a dream?

The story ends with a question reminiscent of Dr. Seuss' very first book (And to think that I saw it on Mulberry street), i.e., What would *you* do?

For starters, I thought the Cat character was unrealistic, one-dimensional, and a complete doo-doo head.Plus, the book was way too vague at times.And worst of all, it never bothered explaining why the cat was in a hat.

I mean, I'm tempted to think the author just put him in a hat because it happens to rhyme with cat!!

The Whale in a Pail!I can just see it now.The long awaited follow up to The Cat in the Hat, featuring a walking, talking whale who, for no reason whatsoever, happens to spend time in a freakin' pail!Never mind the fact that whales don't fit in pails, never mind the fact that whales can't talk--this particular whale defies all the laws of nature for reasons that go entirely unexplained.

I'd like to know where this Seuss fella got his degree, because I think they're handing out diplomas to anyone who shows up at their door.

Great for beginner ELLs
School-aged beginner ELLs tackle this book with gusto for several reasons.
The irony in the storyline is funny in a way that a beginner in English can still understand. They can reenact it while the teacher reads until the language becomes familiar. The technical words (specific words not necessary to everyday survival like Maine, Spain, Marines) do not an impediment to understanding the storyline.

Reading this book is good physical activity
I first encountered this book when it was read aloud to me in a room full of about 400 people.Every time the reader said "get up" (as in "I am not going to GET UP today") everyone got up out of their chairs and then sat back down.It was a refreshing activity break in an otherwise sedentary gathering.I subsequently bought the book for my young daughter, who shares the sentiment expressed in the title.We enjoy the book very much.

Bizarre Sudden Ending
I just borrowed this book from the library to read to my daughter and I must say it really has a perplexing DUD of an ending. The story is actually cute up until the last page where it just ends suddenly. Even my two-year-old daughter looked up at me wondering if there was any more to the story when we got to the last page. She is intelligent enough to expect something to happen but nothing does. Since it was a library book and therefore not new, I actually examined the book closer to see if perhaps some pages had fallen out at the end but no, it just has a terribly lazy ending to an otherwise cute lead-up.
I would definitely NOT recommend this book for the young readers like it was designed for (ages 5-8) because it doesn't teach readers about the basics of a story (beginning, middle and END) Instead, it might confuse young readers because of it's lack of an ending.

A Rare Dud by the Doctor
Ok, my Seuss bona fides:I had so much Seuss on the brain as a kid that in some elementary grade writing class, I came up with storyline I thought was original, but in fact, was just a rewarmed "Yertle the Turtle" plotline! I love the Sneetches, Cat in the Hat, and a dozen others.But this book can't hold a candle to them.On first read, I thought how weird the other 1-star reviews seemed compared to the near idolatry found in all the others.After purchasing the book, I'm totally in their camp.I'm not one that needs every book to push the finest of motives or reinforce the best in human nature, but this book really doesn't do parents any service at all -- in fact, it may undermine it a bit.It does glorify a little boy who defies everyone in getting up in the morning and along the way disparages his neighbors with whom he "never liked anyway." It's maybe fine for another age group, but other parents out there, you know what I mean... you have to spend a lot of energy getting pro-social thoughts across to your child during the course of a day.The last thing you need is a book that opens the door to defying you and coming out winning.I write this review to help the next person move on from this Seuss book to so many others that are so much better.I've only come across one other Seuss dud so far.... Hooper Humperdink.So, Suess fans.... keep on lookin'!

Great Book!

Primer for Beginners - a review of "In a People House"
This one is a primer for beginning readers: AR 1

The story is about a mouse and a bird who enter a house to take a look around.The artwork is the standard cute and colorful Suessian stuff.The printis VERY large, and it provides good, non-threatening practice for beginning readers.However, unlike other Dr. Seuss books, this one is not as interesting as a read-aloud, and I don't think you'll find your children pouring through it the way they will "Cat in the Hat" or "The Butter Battle Book".

Here's some text so you can see what it's like.

"Come inside, Mr. Bird," said the mouse.
"I'll show youwhat there is ina People House..."


"Bananas, bathtub, bottles, brooms...
That's what you find in people's rooms".

As you can see most of the text is a list of household items and as a consequence I'm only giving this book 3-Stars.While it is a good solid book, it's not one that I would recommend people buy.

Chronicled the life, didn't capture the essence
Dr. Seuss' as a person was as fascinating as the characters in his books. Unfortunately, this biography doesn't really capture that.

The authors steer clear of saccharine praise. But the style is empty. The book catalogs the man's life in full, but by the end of the read I felt I knew everything about what he did and when and very little about who he was and why. As if afraid of criticism, the book makes no serious attempt to connect the themes of his literature with his personality or experiences. The authors waste an opportunity at creative writing about an extremely creative man, thus the biography simply feels like an extensive Wikipedia page. Not poorly written, just not very much fun.

Tasteful and Intersting
A cleverly written biography of one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Although he died not so long ago, it seems as if Dr. Seuss the legend has been replaced by Dr. Seuss the label in the minds of America's youth. This biography was a touching, insightful look into the life of the man behind the cat. Although obviously written with a pro-Seussbias (they were his friends, after all), the book was pleasure to read, and is sure to be passed on to friends and family.

Light, happy-go-lucky biography of an American icon
Dr. Seuss is an American icon by anyone's standards. He taught millions of children how to read and enchanted young and old alike with his clever, unsentimental stories and rhymes, as well as his fanciful, detailed drawings.

While this biography doesn't get to the core of the man, it is nevertheless entertaining and good at portraying Dr. Seuss' perpetual, impish, childlike vision of the world. We see that he was a prankster and ever-young at heart, even into his 80s. At the same time, we also see a man who was passionate about his work and perfectionistic in his sense of color, meter and story development. And he didn't shy away from heady topics such as the environment, nuclear war and aging. Indeed, because of his skill and keen, honest, funny insights into the world, both children and adults reveled in his surreal, magical worlds. With books like The Lorax and The Butter Battle Book, we see a subversive, brilliant man who was thirty years ahead of his time, simultaneously writing about important issues, while entertaining everyone and also teaching children how to respect their world and the people around them.

Dr. Seuss seemingly had infinite energy for writing, drawing, painting, collaborating, imagining and building a canon of classic literature. It started early, from his days at Dartmouth, to his early attempts to break into the publishing market during the 1920s. His biographers, the Morgans, do well to emphasize his boundless spirit and curiosity---he managed to travel to exotic corners of the world, write over fifty books, and still never missed a parade or retrospective in his honor.

This biography is not a "tell-all" and doesn't probe into the depths of the man or his wonderful, mysterious, inexplicable creative process. It's a light, charming biography of a man that all of us seem to know and love, despite having never met him. Of course, after reading this book, you'll wish that you HAD known him.

A silly, shallow and uniformed bio that falls far short of lending any insight nor new information on this brilliant author/illustrator. Written by a local reporter for the San Diego Union, this is one of those "gee, and I knew him!" efforts that does not deserve to be seriously considered.
Pass on it.

I read it so many time I heard the cadence in my sleep
My daughter loved this book when she was young and I grew to dread it. She loved the rhyming and always chanted the closing, "Feet. Feet. Feet. Oh, how many feet you meet!" with me. I read it so many times some evenings that I would lie in bed with the equivalent of the tune going through my head. Funny!
This is a good, light-hearted book that's well suited both for preschoolers and early readers. Breezy, repetitive, rhyming text helps children read, and funny pairs of words (small feet, big feet, here come pig feet! his feet, her feet fuzzy fur feet!) keep everybody's interest. I can't praise this one enough :)

Don't get the board book version. It's poorly constructed, and they also leave stuff out.

"OPPOSITES" for young readers
A good step up for young children who may have previously enjoyed Curious George's Opposites.

Crazy Seussian creatures abound.

NOTE: Be sure to buy the classic hardcover (white background on front cover); apparently the board book edition (The Foot Book: Dr. Seuss's Wacky Book of Opposites) is to be avoided at all cost.

"The Foot Book" is still a hit.
This book was a favorite of my children and I ordered it to share with my 2 1/2 year old grandson as my copy is almost in shreds. I was glad that it is still available.

Dr. Seuss for a destructive 2 yo!
I was so thrilled to find that they made Dr. Seuss in a board book form.As the mother of a 2 year old who routinely rips pages from any book she gets in her hands, I was itching to read her some of the Dr. Seuss books we'd put away for her, but I knew that she would try to destroy or eat (yes, eat) a normal book if we read it to her.I was so thrilled to find these and be able to start reading them to her.No, it's not the originals.They're actually a very abridged version of some old favorites, but they feel Seuss-y enough to read to a child who would tear apart the actual books.Everyone's happy, here.

The Cat in the Hat
My granddaughters were not sure they were going to like this CD.They wanted to listen to it during daylight first.After hearing it with other people around, they decided they liked it and would listen to it at night when they were in bed.It took a bit of convincing, however.

The background music gets a bit too loud
The background music gets a bit loud at times. We got used to it eventually. Otherwise the stories are great and so are the performances. My 8y.o. son can't get enough. What's great, we could follow up with the books. I would highly recommend it for elementary school children.

Kids like to listen to this a lot, we down loaded it to the computer and they love it.

Great idea but background music interferes
My daughter loves Dr. Seuss so I immediately ordered this CD and the Green Eggs & Ham version as well. It's a great idea, but the background music is too loud at various points so it's hard to understand the words while the CD plays. That is our only complaint. I was able to decipher what the reader was saying, but my four-year-old had trouble and lost patience with it after a few minutes. I'm hoping she'll grow to appreciate it as time goes on.

Really Great Stories! My kids loved them. Gertrude McFuzz is fabulous and John Lithgow was superb as the reader. In fact all of the cast were excellent in their roles.

The Big Brag, Thidwick, How Lucky You Are are easily perpetual favorites. We played these over and over.

Very Enjoyable
I'm a Kindergarten teacher and I was a little skeptical that they would enjoy it but to my surprise they did (after I explained what a hunch was). I found myself enjoying it as well :)

Definitely not the best
I mean, it's okay... but when compared to almost any other Dr. Seuss book, it is sub par.

I picked this book up at the library for my 3 1/2 year old because I had never seen this particular Dr. Seuss book before.I realized right away that this was one of his more modern books (he even mentions video games!).My son loves it-- he had me read it over and over again.The main problem I see in this book are certain phrases that I really don't want him to start repeating, namely "stupid schlopp" and "dumb a dunce."After my husband read the book to him, he actually called him a stupid schlopp, not realizing that it was bad, so we had to have a conversation with him about certain words not being polite.

Other than that, the book really isn't as magical as some of the other ones.I don't think it makes much sense.Sure, we all get "hunches" about what we should do and sometimes it's hard to make up our mind, but the hunches that the little boy experiences aren't the best examples.I don't really understand what up and down hunches are.

Sigh.I don't know.It's definitely not one that I need in our children's book collection, and I'll be relieved to return it to the library.

I agree with what others have said. This book had inappropriate language when compared to the normal standards of Dr. Suess. I was alarmed and dismayed. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

I bought this book for a charity and it arrived in time to give it to the reader's group who needed new books for their summer reading. I'm sure the children loved it and I was able to give more books thanks to the low price of this book.

Cute book!
This is one of several books I bought for my niece on her 1st birthday. A year later she still loves these books.

The most underrated Seuss book!
Ten Apples Up On Top is clearly the most underrated of the Seuss books, and perhaps the best!My son absolutely loves the three characters and he's earned so much about counting to ten.It's a fun little story and it's not simply page after page of ridiculous rhymes.

A Beginner Book Classic
My daughter asks me to read this story to her every night. It's one of her favorite books, and she knows a good portion of it by heart. The copy we've used is the original print, which was from my own childhood. I decided it was time we upgraded, and although I'm rather impartial to change, I was disappointed that they changed the original colors. It detracts from the original story, and I thought the simplicity of the original illustrations went well with the tale by Dr. Seuss. It was a great book in 1961 and continues to be a great book. You shouldn't change what has been working marvelously.

Little Girl's New Favorite
My 2 year old insists we read this every night. After 4 straight months of The Lorax we are thankful for a new life lesson courtesy of Dr. Suess.

I was pleased to receive my purchase quickly, however it was packaged in a soft envelope and the binding got bent. But not a problem for me.

Nice rhimes but you need to be ok with the book's message
The book is of course fun. It is the story of a moose that is nice and kind and taken advantage of by other animals...until she breaks free and learns to take care of herself (or put herself first).

it is a little dark in its message. SPOIL alert: the animals who take advantage of the moose end up dead.

It gives the message that you should care for yourself first.
Not a bad message by itself and certainly in the context of this story it makes sense, but some parents might not be ready to discuss such a point with their young or very children.

Overall, the book is nice but the message is such that you need to know you might get more questions that you are ready to answer.

Thidwick provides a valuable lesson
I purchased Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose because we have a beaten-up copy we love. Thidwick learns that a big-hearted moose can be misused by animals and insects that are more than willing to take advantage of Thidwick's generosity. Adults will enjoy the story as much as the children.I bought the hardcover, hoping it will hold up as well as our original. Not one of Geisel's best efforts
First of all, anyone reading Dr. Seuss needs to know that many, if not most, of his books are allegorical cautionary tales with A Message.Second, Theodore Geisel (aka "Dr. Seuss") was a solid liberal, even by the standards of the times in which he wrote; by today's standards, with as far to the right as the country has lurched, he would be a flaming radical.If you don't want your child exposed to message books, especially liberal ones, then you'd best avoid Dr. Seuss altogether (but more's the pity for your child).

And third, the Message of this book is an anti-war message.The Yooks, who butter their bread on the top side, are involved in an escalating war with the Zooks, who butter theirs on the bottom side.Some children, particularly younger ones, may find this war and its resulting hostilities and tensions, disturbing.My own not-quite-four-year-old is fascinated by this book, but slightly disturbed and rather baffled, especially by the unresolved ending.If you are going to share this book with a child, be careful to gauge his or her maturity level and sensitivities.

This book resembles most other Seuss books.It is set in a fanciful world with bright colors and recognizably Seussian characters.He takes a petty conflict (like the conflict over belly stars in "The Sneetches") and raises it to an absurd level to spotlight fault lines in human behavior and experience.

This book, however, regardless of the appropriateness of the anti-war theme, doesn't rise to the standard of other Seuss books for reasons other than the theme:

1.The Message of this book is much more overt than in other Seuss books and, hence, it lacks the multiple levels that Seuss books can be read on.Children don't always get The Message of "The Lorax" or "The Sneetches" - they're just fun stories.But they won't be able to miss The Message of "The Butter Battle Book" as they're pounded over the head with it.

2.Like other reviewers have noted, the rhyme and meter are off on this book unlike any other book I've ever read.The words lack fluidity and there's very little humor in the word playYou could argue that the seriousness of the topic makes humor inappropriate, but I don't consider environmental destruction any less serious, yet "The Lorax" has good word play humor.

3.The narration is seriously flawed.We start with a boy narrating the story telling us that his grandfather took him out to the Wall on the last day of Fall.Then Grandpa takes over the narration, starting back when he was a young man.We are told that events happen "the next day", giving a sense of very little passage of time, but then Grandpa is an old man and he "finds" the boy (who takes up the narration) by the wall when all the other Yooks are marching underground as Grandpa prepares to deliver his "Bitsy Big Boy Boomeroo" (an example of the clunkiness referred to above).It's almost as confusing as when we lose Ishmael in "Moby Dick".

I am both a huge Dr. Seuss fan and an avid anti-war activist.I would think that if anyone could pull of an allegorical anti-war fantasy story, it would be Dr. Seuss, but, sadly, in my opinion, he just didn't pull it off.

The Butter Battle book is about this young boys grandfather taking him out to see the wall. This wall is the wall that keeps the zooks away from them the yooks. The zooks eat there toast with the buttrt on the bottom of there toast. The yooks eat there toast with the butter on top of there toast. the boys grandfather told him that when the wall was only half way built he had to guard the wall to make sure no zooks came to the yooks side. When i was guarding the wall i had a plant that pointy so if any zook came near me i can poke them. But one day one of the zooks sling shoted a rock at my plant and it broke. Then i went to the head yook and he told his people to make me a machine that can shoot 3 rocks at once. After they made it i brang it to the wall and when i got there the zooks had the same one as me. So i kept going back to the head yook to build better machines then them but no matter how hard i tried the zooks always had the same one as me.then we both gave up and built the wall to the highest it can go and decided to stay away from each other.

Yep, This Is The One -- a review of "The Butter Battle Book"
Well, this is the Seuss book that riles the feathers of some adults. It's got a definite anti-war theme and deals with the consequences of a military arms escalation.

Who's at war? It's the Yooks and the Zooks. Essentially the same sorts of people, they clash over whether bread should be eaten butter side up or down. The story is told from a little boys (?) perspective and is the only Seuss book I can recall that ends on an ominous note.

"Grandpa!" I shouted. "Be careful! Oh gee!
Who's going to drop it?
Will you...? Or will he..."
"Be patient," said Grandpa. "We'll see.
We will see..."

It's hard to say whether kids pick up on these various messages. My own impression is that they won't, unless you sit and have a chat with them. They will be far too busy listing to the clever rhymes and gazing at the wild Seussian artwork.

Meant for practice reading, the Accelerated Reading designation for "The Butter Battle Book" is 3.9 which means that end of year 3rd Graders should be able to read this book themselves without getting too frustrated by words they don't know.

The "Official" Interest Level is given as Preschool thru 2nd Grade, but that makes no sense given the reading level. And personally, I would say that it's more appropriate for First thru Fourth Graders.

My own two children showed moderate interest in the book and they are currently 6 and 8; boy and girl. They requested multiple reads and the book is a pretty good read-aloud. Not amongst Seuss' best, in my opinion. It IS definitely worth a read.

Love it as a Teacher and a Parent
This book is fantastic! It is my favorite Dr. Seuss book and one of my favorite read-aloud books of all time. I have been an elementary teacher for the past ten years and every class I have read it to loves it and my own kids do also. It has colorful and funny illustrations and the words flow like a story-length poem. The moral of the story is basically that the grass isn't always greener, that no matter where you go there will be problems, so just deal with the problems instead of trying to find a problem-free place. It is funny, entertaining and a joy to read for children or adults.

I was unfamiliar with this one
This is a little odd, even for Seuss.

An unidentified thing, our narrator, is having a rough day. He trips, he gets stung... and every time he looks around to prevent it from happening again, something new shows up on his unwatched side!

Finally he bumps into a man going to Solla Sollew, where they don't have troubles - or at least, very few.

And this starts his whole troublesome trip. He was safer at home! He finally arrives, exhausted, only to find out that they've misplaced the key and he can't get in, and anyway their troubles in Solla Sollew are just starting thanks to the misplaced key, but there's an even more PERFECT place down the ways a bit...

Not for our intrepid hero, though. He gets a big stick and goes home, deciding any troubles will have trouble with him first. This last scene may bother some parents because of the implied violence. Me, I'm busier wondering how he'll use that stick to intimidate a rock that trips him up.

There isn't a very clear moral, if that's what you go for. Still and all, I like this one.

The Best of the Best
One of the best parts of being a Baby Boomer is that we grew up with a seemingly endless supply of Dr. Seuss books.Some were message books, some are literary wonders but I believe this book really is the doctor at his most subtle witty best.

Although all Seuss books are a joy to read aloud, this one is especially good (the list of injuries in an early fall the hero takes still comes easily to my memory) and it gets the point across that one cannot successfully avoid trouble without the preachy sentiment in the Lorax.I must have read the book hundreds of times before the sentiment finally soaked into my silly brain but the philosophy has been a guiding light ever since.

I was lucky enough to meet the good doctor once, at a reception in San Diego.I was so overwhelmed by the circumstance, I could hardly speak coherently, much less make conversation.Although I forgot almost every other word in the English language (including my name) I did manage to blurt out "Solla Sollew was my favorite book in grade school!"I certainly did not create an admirable impression that day.But the doctor did and his book still does.Read it, enjoy it and take it to heart. ... Changed a 4-year old's outlook
I initially rejected this, my first book from the public library at age 4, because of the cruelty of the barbed fish-hook on the cover.My father said that I should reconsider and not judge a book by its cover (indeed, inside the book no fish-hook hurts a fish).He added the related proverb, "all that glitters is not gold."His message was that I needed to look beyond appearances.That was similar to two themes from that first book - imagining adventures beyond what was immediately seen and faithfully pursuing your visions in the face of discouragement from "realists."These three interlocking themes continue in my life 61 years later.Recently I purchased a copy of "McElligot's Pool" and read it to my adult son who then read it to my father.Highly recommended.

dont buy from A-1 books
I purchased the book from amazon on the 3rd of September. Its now the 14th of october, still no book. On the 12th I sent a complaint to A-1, they issued a refund, end of story. no attempt to line me up with the another book. Thanks for nothing.

Classic Dr. Suess
This is a classic Dr. Suess book from my childhood. I have read it over and over again to my kids, and now I am reading it to my grandchildren. This book ranks right up there with The Cat in the Hat for entertainment value, for some reason it was a Dr. Suess book that wasn't as well known. Thank goodness my grandmother was a librarian and sent it to me for my 5th birthday. Your kids will LOVE this book, and adults actually enjoy reading it, too!
