great gift
I am a Seuss fan but a skeptic. This was the best little book ever. I gave it as a gift to two very divrese graduates, both said they would read it often.I ended up buying one of my own. When your down it lifts you!

Not worth the money
I was astounded when the book arrived.It fits in the palm of my hand and is thinner then some of the MP3 players on the market today.Although true to Seuss, the content was disappointing and I found the entries a far stretch at times to fit in to 'success' tips. If you want tips for success, purchase Seuss' "Oh the places you'll go" - That book is worth the money.

Great book for teachers
My daughter is a new teacher and loves all Dr. Seuss books.

Good old doctor seuss
I was given this clever little book for my birthday last year (a gentle hint, perhaps, to get me on the right path?), and while I can't imagine paying [$$$] for it, that's about the only criticism I can dredge up. Anything by the good doctor is brilliant, of course. Anything he touches is magic. And we will always laugh.

Highly recommended.

AS A BILINGUAL TEACHER ON THE BORDER, THIS IS GREAT!
Long ago my grandmother read this to me in English, teaching me morals and ethics and care for unprotected life against callous and lethal imperialism, which probably served as part of the foundation for my womb-to-tomb pro-life and pro-peace ethic in keeping with the teachings of our Catholic Church.

What a joy now to find such an excellent translation of this classic in allegedly juvenile literature, which was first published in English in 1954, now translated in 2003.

As someone who loves to translate, ordinarily I battle with the translator, screaming the old slogan that they truly prove that to translate is to betray (it sounds better in Latin or Spanish, etc.). In this case however I am in awe of the ability and the faithfulness of Yanitizia Canetti, who remains so close to the spirit and to the letter and to the complex rhyme scheme of the good Dr. Seuss. Ms. Canetti works wonders in preserving natural speech and uncontorted vocabulary in presenting Dr. Seuss original. Of course Spanish with its far more regular phonetics andsyllabication may appear a simpler language to rhyme, yet you really must hear this translation with full understanding of Spanish to realize what an excellent translation this is.

My only difficulty of course here on the border is the fact that the word used to translate speck as in speck of dust unfortunately has another, more common meaning locally, a meaning you may find at the end of any unabridged Spanish Dictionary, such as the Velasquez. It is surprising that this term was chosen, as the book is printed in Mexico, very well printed, of the quality and durability of the original Seuss publications.

Over all I can highly recommend this book for anyone of any age. SO much of Dr. Seuss carries lessons for adults as well as for children in their formative years, as may be discerned when you see this tale is dedicated to the Japanese professor in Kyoto Mitsugi Nakamura. It never fails to touch my heart, at the catharsis experienced and accepted by the other characters upon their epiphany of the presence of the Quienes, when all realize at last, after torture and unjust imprisonment of Horton, including the familiar rituals we inflict on our hostages on Guantanamo Bay of sleep deprivation and threats of imminent death, etc., that truly "una persona es una persona, por muy pequena que sea." in the familiar motto of this story. A nation is a nation no matter how small, and we have no right nor reason to destroy any nation, whether in a boiling vat of Beetle-juice nor through aerial bombardment. In fact a good follow-up to this book is Thomas Merton's Peace in a Post-Christian Era, or nearly anything by the Reverend Father John Dear, SJ!

no green eggs and ham this
My uncle bought this for us when I was 5 or 6 years old. It immediately appealed. I still remember one of the beasts by heart:
boob boober, bab boober, boob boober bubs, they float on the water like blubbery tubs. They're no good to eat, you can't cook 'em like steaks, but they're handy in crossing small oceans and lakes!
I think that's it anyway.

Even at that age, I wasn't impressed by the cat in the hat or green eggs and ham, though of all the popular Seuss books, those seem to me to be the least juvenile (which I guess is a dumb criticism since that's the audience . . . ).

I like to buy these for people with kids of that age, 5 or 6.

Charming, sophisticated, Dr. Seuss at his best. I highly recommend this to any mom & dad who've exhausted the 4 sentence per page books -- you'll enjoy them as much as your kids -- if not more.

Altered perspectives for life
This book introduced "paradigm shifting" into my intellectual vocabulary before I even knew what such a thing was.

Many, many, many years ago (Nixon was President, I think) I read this and was changed. I can remember the the images, the textures, the smells (Ah! The ditto machine and its purple perfume!) and all my surroundings. I was sitting in the elementary school library, facing northwest toward the door. Lured by the title and the premise, I had taken the volume to my assigned seat ("Library" was a class back then, as it should have been) and quickly devoured it.

The concept - that our 26-letter alphabet was an arbitrary collection and not a universal constant on a par with gravity - had never entered my cartoon-addled mind. It sparked an awareness of similar cultural and philosophical constrictions that I have expanded and retained to this day.

Of course I love Dr. Seuss books, however this is the second time I have received packaging from Amazon and it arrives in rough shape.The book binder was destroyed from the packaging not being secure.The Packaging must get better for future orders.They did replace the book and I am again very happy with my collection of seuss books. :-)

Perfect Translation!

snow, sunshine, rain, OOBLECK!
This was likely my third book, back in 1949. I got this copy, in the 21st century, for some great-grandchildren. My first copy traveled around the world with me, and islong since lost. Maybe they can keep it going for another sixty years, for their great-grandchildren.

Bartholomew and the Oobleck
Another childhood favorite--please tell me I'm not the only one who loved making "oobleck" out of cornstarch and water (and still do!).It's another classic Seuss story for kids to love and enjoy.This one actually doesn't contain much out of the ordinary, in comparison to other Seuss books, that is.It's humorous and the writing is pretty advanced, but still makes sense, a great highway to learning new vocabulary.The pictures are pretty neat, all black and white, except for the highlighted green oobleck, nonsensically whimsical as ever.Great for Seuss fans--I do recommend starting off with The Cat in the Hat, for obvious reasons, but I see no reason not to build upon that :)

Good story
This book is pretty good and it has a nice message for children, but it just isn't quite as snappy or playful as other Seuss books (Green Eggs and Ham, Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, etc). My four year old also doesn't like this book as well as other Seuss books, although he does occasionally ask for it.

A Wonderful Story of Divine Retribution
A wonderful story about an arrogant king, introduced in The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, who decides that he wants to rule the sky as well as the land, and brings down horror on his kingdom when his magicians cook up a dangerous, sticky new kind of precipitation.The story ends with Bartholomew, his page-boy, courageously speaking the truth to his foolish king, and the king's repentance brings about freedom for the land.

There are echoes of King David's deadly hubris (2 Samuel 24) in this story of divine retribution.Additionally, Bartholomew's example of speaking truth to power is an excellent one, and for those who wish their children to grow into thoughtful, conscientious citizens, this isn't a bad place to begin.

Finally! Another Seuss Translation that Rhymes!
After being disappointed with a few Spanish translations from Seuss's collection, I was eager to read this one. Happily, it RHYMES! I am so excited!

This book is NOT for new Spanish students. It's a great book for Spanish II students, though! We see present tense, preterit, imperfect, as well as future tense! Conditional is there, direct objects, commands, and plenty of familiar vocabulary. I'll be using this as a supplemental exercise for students that want extra credit - compare and contrast Seuss's translations The in the Hat Comes Back - or, identify all verb tenses on this page. Etc. The possibilities are endless! Or maybe read it aloud for extra credit to your classmates!

So, if you're look for a fun way to review and get a few tongue twisters in your Spanish curriculum, this is a great book to use! If you're a new Spanish learner, of course, buy it, of course, look at the words and learn some new ones, but please remember that this is not a word-for-word translation - It's MUCH better! The writer had to work hard to get the meter and rhyme right, so you can not lay both English and Spanish books side by side and use it as a literal dictionary translation.

Can't WAIT to read this to my kids again! They loved it, and the eldest pointed out "That's not how he said it in the old book!" So, I can see he understands! Maravilloso!

Learning from Experience
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. The Cat in the Hat Comes Back was one of her picks.

The theme of this story builds from The Cat in the Hat. In that story, two children are home alone when the cat in the hat visits, makes a horrible mess, and manages to clean it all up just as mother returns. Although the family fish warned them about the cat, the children were gullible.

In this story, the children are not gullible, but the cat takes advantage of them anyway. The children are home alone shoveling deep snow while their mother is away in town for the day. The cat in the hat goes into the house before they can stop him, and eats cake in the bath tub while bathing. They told him to get out and pulled the plug. Unfortunately, that left a long pink cat ring. A contrite, but overconfident, cat in the hat says he'll take care of everything. But he just moves the pink mess from one valuable object to another, starting with mother's white dress. He is a very foolish cat!

Soon, he needs help. In his hat are 26 little cats from A to Z who are specialists at cleaning up the messes he just made. Eventually, the outside snow is so covered in pink spots so that the whole yard is one big spot! Then he calls on Z who is too small to see, and Z finishes the job. Everything is back in order.

This beginning reader is also designed to help with the alphabet. Long before the book can be read by your child, the alphabet sequence will be helpful. The book is moe difficult to read than The Cat in the Hat, so your child will probably not attempt it unless and until that book is mastered.

There are many subtle messages here that any parent can endorse. One, you have to be careful about letting people in your house. Although the cat in the hat is not sinister, children need to understand that lesson in a nonfrightening way. Two, if you know someone is a troublemaker, you'd better keep them away from mischief. Children are very accepting of mischievous children who set bad examples. This gives you a chance to praise the good behavior of the children while questioning the appropriateness of the cat's behavior. What else could the children have done? They will have this issue with friends in years to come. Three, the smallest cat is the most powerful. That's a rare voice in favor of examining people and animals for their worth in effectiveness rather than their size. Diminutive children will like this part. Four, by being persistent in dealing with the cat, everything turns out all right. Children need to learn that persistence can overcome adversity. Five, thinking ahead can save a lot of problems. If the children had given the cat some paper towels in the beginning or knew how to wash out a bath tub themselves, the complications would have been minor. As you read the story together, you can emphasize these lessons to help your child.

When you are both done with the book, you should discuss how problems can be prevented by anticipation. This is a good way to help your child's problem-solving ability mature.

I was very disappointed when I received this book in the mail.It said it was in good shape but when I got the book there were stickers all over the front of the book.I was able to take the stickers off but was still disappointed it said nothing about them being on there when I ordered the book.

Laziness doesn't pay but faithfulness does
Another lesson taught by our dear Dr. Seuss.This story is about Horton, the elephant, who is tricked by a bird named Mayzie into sitting on her egg through horrible conditions for a year while she is off frolicking in the warm south.When the egg finally hatches, it isn't a baby bird that emerges but a flying baby elephant.I don't know if the slant on evolution was meant here or was just truly by accident.

Moral of the story: laziness doesn't pay but faithfulness does.

I read this to my 2 1/2 year old and she's had nightmares for a week about hunters shooting her with guns. In the book,hunters come after Horton and point their guns at him. Horton braces to be shot but then the hunters change their mind and kidnap him to the circus instead.In general it's a dark tail for the littler ones.Go ahead and read it to your kid if you want them to wake up crying and screaming like mine did. ... A Great Primer for More Advanced Readers - a review of "I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today!"
"I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today!" is a fun Dr. Seuss book which contains three stories and 1365 words.The book's Accelerated Reading designation is given as 2.9 which means the text is suitable for children reading at an advanced Second Grade level.[2.9 translates as a book that an "average" child should be able to read when in the 9th month of 2nd Grade.It can be enjoyed by people of any age, of course.]

At our house the stories were met with almost universal praise from both the 6 and 8 year old.And what's nice about Seuss books, besides the rampant craziness, is the fact that children often forget how many words they are reading as they work away at finding out what happens.

Summary :::A fun Seuss reader which contains three stories.The AR designation is 2.9 but the word-magic of story and rhyme makes this book appropriate for non-reading children as well.

We love this book!
I used to read this book aloud in a church nursery when I was in my 20's.When I had my daughter at age 36, I remembered how fun it was to read and how much the kids loved it.I added it to her collection and it is one of her favorites.I just read it to her again the other night and she is ten years old (not too old for a bedtime story yet)!I highly recommend this Seuss favorite.

Pretty cute book
This is not your typical Seuss book - it has 3 stories, all of which teach a little lesson.Once again, Seuss' language can be a little obnoxious so I must warn you there that you'll need to change a few words like "stupid" as you go.That word just doesn't sound too great coming from a two-year-old.Anyway, it shows how you should be careful of what you say before you say it in I can lick 30 tigers (meaning, beat them up and not actually "taste them" as you may think), how you should take care of yourself and not let others tell you what to do in King Louie, and to watch what you think about and how you spend your spare time in Thunk Glunk.Valuable lessons and entertaining as well.Not too big of a favorite in this house, but worth reading once in awhile.

Dr. Seuss makes a series of lessons in a trio of stories
"I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! and Other Stories" presents a trio of stories told in verse and illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1969.Each story makes a simple point.The title story is about a young fellow who looks like a smaller version of the Cat in the Hat (there is reason to believe he is part of the next generation) who declares that he can lick thirty tigers today.However, as soon as he see the thirty tigers he starts finding reasons to whittle down that number, which should indicate to young readers the problems of biting off more than you can chew (pick whatever phrase that expresses this idea you like even if it is your eyes are bigger than your stomach).

"King Looie Katz" is about the fancy cat named Looie who was the King of Katzen-stein and who was so proud of his royal tail that not only did he wash it every morning in a ten-gallon golden pail.In fact, King Looie is so proud that he decides that his tail should never be allowed to touch the earth and he made Fooie Katz follow him around and keep from dragging on the ground.When Fooie notices his tail is sagging he makes Kooie Katz lift up his tail.Soon all the cats in Katzen-stein are walking round and round keeping each other's tails from dragging on the ground.All the cats, that is, except one in this simple story about being more "demo-catic."

Finally there is "The Glunk that Got Thunk," which has the distinction of being the wordiest Dr. Seuss story I have ever read.The sister of the small cat we met in the first story likes to go upstairs after supper and use her Thinker-Upper.Usually she thinks up friendly little things with smiles and fuzzy fur.But one night she decides to go for go for something more fun and discovers she has thunked a Glunk.There are two problems with this.First, a Glunk cannot be UN-thunk.Second, this Glunk calls his mother each night, which is an expensive long distance phone call (ten dollars a minute), and this particular Glunk will never stop talking (which explains why this story gets so wordy; beginning readers will be amazed).There are actually several lessons that can be drawn from this one.

None of these are what I would call first level Dr. Seuss books but there are three of them, which just about adds up to a solid collection.You readers might find it strange to find three short stories collected in one, but there are other such collections out there.These stories are a bit more inclined towards making points beyond the good doctor's normal delightful infatuation with the realm of imagination.

Lessons taught in the most wonderful way possible
These three stories are a wonderful trip for children into an imaginative world, where they learn important lessons, in the most fun way possible.
In the first, `I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today' the character learns that his bravado does not live up to the reality, in `The Glunk that Got Thunk' children learn how insurmountable problems can be solved by working together and keeping a level head, and in `King Loii Katz' children learn a very important lesson:
That sometimes one has to follow ones own conscience and put a stop to the bandwagon. It only takes one to say `ENOUGH'.

Great Day For Up
I purchased this copy for my granddaughters' school library. It came in a reasonable time and is in reasonable condition. The librarian was happy with it.

A great book
This is one of my favorite Dr Seuss books. I think it has a very positive message and the water color drawing are beautiful.

Childrens' Books
I loved this book as a child so I purchased it for my God Son, it's in amazing condition. I could swear my own mother bought it for me years ago, I'm very impressed.

Suess and Blake
It does not have as much rhyme as other Dr Seuss books, but like "Hop on Pop" it is designed to be a simple read for beginner readers.
What is unique about this Dr Seuus book, is that it is illustrated by Quentin Blake, commonly known for his illustration collaborations with Roald Dahl,and later in his own children's fiction such as Little Greats: Mr Magnolia.

A fine first read with wonderful illustrations
Dr. Suess's scansion and made-up words annoy me. My tri-lingual children have a hard enough time differentiating and isolating Standard English words, so I generally avoid Suess.
The volume is a rare welcome exception (there are a few Suessisms) and is an excellent book for first readers.

The story is plain, with the major intention of teaching your child to *read* his or her first words in English (in this case the word is "up").

But Quentin Blake's illustrations are superb and worth the price of the volume alone.

The conclusion is a bit silly, and has a rather lazy aspect to it that parents need to guide their children on (no, it isn't okay to sleep in bed all day like the boy in the story, this is just a silly book"), but mostly this is unobjectionable. ... Read more

Too many presumptions
I found the content disappointing.I felt that the author's presumptions of Dr. Seuss' underlying meaning, in the stories that he referenced, were frequently very difficult for me to find credible or acceptable.I just felt it was guesswork by the author with less substantiation than I would like to have paid for.
I enjoy the Dr. Seuss stories and believe that several of them do convey wonderful truths.I just don't believe that this author presented them very well at all.

The "Godfather" of "Gospel According To ..." Books is Back with a Spiritual Salute to Seuss
I've known there was more to Dr. Seuss ever since I read through his collection of World War II-era cartoons: "Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor (Seuss) Geisel." His strong social conscience was obvious as he skewered the dangers of the Nazi thugs extending their grasp across Europe. Some of his cartoons were even razor-sharp darts at the handful of Americans who were sympathetic to the Fascists.

Now, Robert Short has turned to a theological study of Seuss' dozens of children's books. This is not as crazy as it may sound to Baby Boomers reared on "Cat in the Hat." Short has a sharp eye and mind for these things. After all, he's the "godfather" of the "Gospel According to ..." genre. In the 1960s, Short wrote the original "Gospel According to Peanuts" book that sold millions and millions of copies. Digging into Seuss' early life, Short points out that -- while studying at Oxford University in the mid 1920s -- Seuss' greatest desire was to illustrate a new edition of "Pilgrim's Progress." The fact that Oxford scholars blocked his plan eventually led to his departure from Britain -- and, Short argues, his later strategy of submerging spiritual themes beneath the surface of his book projects.

Short doesn't completely prove that Seuss deliberately placed Christian themes in his children's books -- but Short does convincingly demonstrate that these themes must have been a part of the spiritual fabric of Seuss' creative life.

You'll have to read the book to decide for yourself, but after examining 11 of Seuss' most popular books -- Short makes a mighty convincing case that Seuss has been passing powerful messages along to us through the years with equal doses of joy and laughter!

The Wonderful Dr Seuss
Remember reading this book to my kids 25 years ago & it was one of their favourites!
Now bought it again to read to my grandson & so many memories come flooding back.

Wow - something more fun to read aloud than The Cat in the Hat!?!
My 6-year-old son checked this out from the library a week ago.I'd never heard of it, but I adore the best Dr. Seuss books, and The Cat in the Hat has always ranked as my #1 book to read to a kid, so my hopes were high.Even with high expectations, though, I was blown away.I have yet to make it through this book without a mistake, but that's partly because it's harder to read tricky tongue twisters when you're grinning.The rhymes are so clever, the rhythms so natural - and it's so fun to read the carnival-barker patter in which young Morris McGurk describes the circus he'll build behind Mr. Sneelock's store - that I think the Cat in the Hat may have slipped to second place.This is just a fantastic book for any kid old enough (it's longish), and especially for any grownup who loves to read aloud.(And my son?He's asked for it every night since he got it, so I haven't had to beg.)

We got this book for our 4 year old son to give him for Christmas along with tickets to see the circus.He LOVES this book and reads it over and over.The rhymes are catchy and it's classic Seuss style.Highly recommend!!

IN THE BEGINNING.....
Well just about any hard core fan of Dr. Seuss will have read this work, or at the very least know of it.Even those that are not big-time Seuss lovers will at least have heard of it.

In children's literature we have three authors that are almost universally know.First of course is the unequaled Beatrix Potter, then the Brothers Grimm, and right up there with them is Dr. Seuss.Stop and ask anyone, at random, on the street and the chances are pretty good that they will know who you're talking about.

This work, `Mulberry Street' is Theodor Seuss Geisel's first published book for children.He of course went on to write over 60 others in a long and very, very fruitful career. The first thing that the reader must remember when first reading this work is that it was published in 1937 and as I said, it was his first work.Times were different in1937; different artistic standards, different attitudes.That being said though, the genius of Seuss shines through on every page and frame in this book.

Already, the author has use the odd meter which has become so familiar, the same propensity to draw the strange looking critters and creatures which have become so beloved, and the theme of starting simple and adding to the story as it progresses is quite evident and will be seen through the entire body of his life's work.

A young lad is walking down Mulberry Street and spots a horse and wagon. (Actually, in 1937 this was a very common sight).The boy notes that telling this story of just seeing a broken down wagon just won't to.So being like most little boys our hero starts adding and embellishing.Suddenly the old horse becomes a prancing zebra and then the wagon becomes a Roman chariot being driven by a charioteer.Each page finds our little story teller adding to and modifying his story until the end when we have an entire parade including a police escort, an airplane, brass band, the Mayor and city council and a whole cast of characters included.

In the end, when asked by his father what he saw on his way home from school, reality hits the youth.I loved the ending.

Is this thee best Seuss book?That of course is in the eye and mind of the reader.I personally think not, but on the other hand I have not read a Dr. Seuss book that I did not like. I was able to relate to the young man quite well and as a matter of fact, he and I shared many of the same imaginative characteristics at that age.I suspect that most kids into day's world will be able to relate t to this also.

I bought this one for my grandchildren, who love Dr. Seuss, but did not have this book.I especially wanted them to have it, because I remember it from my childhood, and it is his first one for children!Anyway, it is a big hit with them (ages 2 1/2 and 5) and know they will treasure it in their Dr. Seuss collection.

I never received this book, so I can't rate it.
This was a gift for my grandchild that never arrived.I found it at a local bookstore of a large chain of bookstores.Amazon sent all the other books I ordered via UPS, but this one was sent USPS because it was a bargain.It was a bargain because I never received it and they reversed my payment.USPS stinks.

Not one of his early readers :)
This is a classic Seuss book - strange, wild, rhyming. Marco is obliged to tell his father what he saw every day. But all he's seen today is a horse and wagon. (Ah, timeshift. If I saw a horse and wagon on the street it really WOULD be worth talking about!) So he changes a detail or two, and in a one-person version of telephone goes dashing up the stairs to tell his dad all about the BIG BAND and PLANES and ELEPHANTS he saw.

Hilarious :)

I will note that there's a mention of a "Chinese man who eats with sticks". While I don't think that line would make it into any book printed nowadays, I don't think it's actually racist, though if you're concerned you should read this book before you buy it.

I had this book as a child and I loved it so I wanted to get one for my own children!I love Dr. Suess!

This is a great GO TO BED book
I consider this book a classic, as I had this when I was very young. It was read to me as a GO TO BED book, because I was very difficult to put to bed. Plus Marvin looks as though he has foot pajamas on. :) I highly recommend this book for bedtime or naptime! Also good for the child learning to read longer books, but not ready for chapter books.It's a typical Suess book that describes (in Suess style) all the ways that Marvin can "go".

Not my favorite Dr. Seuss
You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss of course, but this one isn't one of my favorites. Silly text and illustrations as always, but the story is just okay.

Cute and Quick
This is a children's biography about Dr. Seuss that is written for the beginning reader with colorful pictures every other page but still contains some interesting facts. The point is reading can be fun. I was surprised to learn that Dr. Seuss wrote a book for adults as well called "You're Only Young Once." Quick read--only takes five minutes!Would be great educational bedtime story.

Truthiness can be fun and educational!
This is Seuss's finest hour...and did England sleep?
She was a noble and generous puglet and her name shall be carried by b'donk'donks and b'dink'dinks everywhere and for all time.
The definitive Lady... and a gift of G--, to boot.
She is an inspiration, and Dr. Seuss shares his discovery with us...everybody knows and nobody cares (that she was naked...because she was so noble)!
Now the story is told and perception becomes wikiality.

Not the best Seuss, but still a treat.
People who read this story with nothing but Seuss's children's books will probably be disappointed. The prose lacks the rhythm, charm and whimsy of Seuss's painstakingly constructed rhymes. However, for those who have read the out-of-print collection "The Tough Coughs as he Ploughs the Dough", this volume is possibly the quintessential example of prewar Seuss writing and artwork. The story, consisting of a series of absurd shaggy dog stories that actually have almost nothing to do with the original Godiva story, show Seuss both in his early artwork and in the last throes of his prose writing, before he gave over completely to rhyme and art. Don't go into this expecting "Cat in the Hat" style rhyme or brilliantly colored artwork. Instead, pick up the book and enjoy the last throes of 1930's intellectual whimsy as expressed by Theodor Seuss Geisel's gifted pen and brush.

Straight from the horse's mouth
After Lord Godiva is killed when his horse throws him, his seven daughters swear an oath forsaking marriage to the Peeping brothers until they have each discovered a "truth" about horses.Each of the seven Ladies Godiva struggles to learn something from their equine companions, each eventually composing a now common horse proverb.

This book was written in 1939 as an "adult" book, presumably because Dr. Seuss's whimiscal drawings of the nude Godivas would have been considered too risque in that era.By today's standards, these drawings are quite tame, and the stories are actually quite delightful.Dr. Seuss's fanciful tales of the origins of these proverbs is entertaining and his illustrations are pure Seuss.

An Early Dr. Seuss Gem
"A beautiful story of love, honor and scientific achievement" is how Dr. Seuss, with tongue in cheek, describes this book. Touted as Dr. Seuss's first book for adults, The Seven Lady Godivas was originally published in 1939 and reissued in 1987. It tells the story of not one, but seven 11th Century Lady Godivas. They are sisters sworn not to marry their beaus, the seven Peeping brothers (yes, Tom is one of them) until each of them discover a scientific truth about horses. They were driven to this oath by the death of their father during an experiment using a horse as a means of transportation.

The history is confused, but the fun never stops. Dr. Seuss's full page drawings (in red, black and white) illustrate every other page. The end papers are a fanciful illustration of the Godiva family tree. The text, though wordier than his childrens books and not in rhyme, is thoroughly Dr. Seuss. He explains the seven sisters preference for nudity by saying they had brains and were not given to vanity. He goes on to say "they were simply themselves and chose not to disguise it." Although this is a great summation of nudist philosophy, it doesn't say much about his regard for women who choose to wear clothes. Instead of scientific truths we are treated by the author to fanciful origins for seven proverbs about horses as each sister discovers her "horse truth" and goes on to marry her boyfriend.

If you enjoy Dr. Seuss, you will find these drawings and this story delightful. Although described as an adult book, children will enjoy the story as well. Today's young folks may not be familiar with all seven of the horse proverbs that Dr. Seuss relates in a book that is over 60 years old, but it should not deter from their enjoyment of this amusing tale. The drawings are not detailed enough to offend even the youngest of readers.
