5-0 out of 5 stars Red Dawn seems to be a common name...
Space Cops High Moon is the last in the series. And that makes me sad, because I feel it was just starting to get great. In this novel the two Solar Police Officers, Joss O'Bannion and Evan Glyndower, are trying to find some lost equipment on Mars and run into something bigger and more dangerous than anything they have ever had to deal with before.
Tons of humor and action, jokes about manga and classical TV series such as Dr. WHO?, quotes from Monty Python and True Grit.Think High Noon with lasers and air tight space suits. The science is slightly hard as with the rest of the books but the focus is still on the cool characters and swiftly moving plot.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Western... On Mars!
It's supposed to be a nice quiet vacation on Mars. Then someone starts shooting.

The third book in the Space Cops series has officers O'Bannion and Glyndower looking for a stolen Solar Patrol Communications Array. Their search takes them from the lawless mining towns of Mars, to an all out battle with a fanatical (and well armed) fringe group called the Red Dawn. This book is a quick, fun read with an exciting and memorable final battle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The frontier IS space.
Officer Lon Salonikis had discovered the answer to the information leaks on Freedom Two and was killed because of it.The problem is he never passed on the answer to anybody else.Solar Police Joss O'Bannion and Evan Glyndower (Lon's ex-partner) now must go to the space station and find out why somebody is willing to kill a police officer over something that should be a minor crime.
The first of three sci-fi books set in the future of space, which is treated like a frontier, where law officers are few and far between and life is cheap. The settings are gritty and realistic, a dirty, somewhat pessimistic future. The science is slightly hard, which I like, but most of the focus is on characters and plot, which is also something I prefer.Lots of humor also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd expect, and that's a good thing.
Space Cops: Mindblast! introduces us to Officers Evan Glyndower and Joss O'Bannion of the Stellar Patrol. Glyndower is a walking weapons platform who wears a Suit (reminiscent of John Steakley's Armour) that makes him virtually indestructable. O'Bannion is a chemist and collector of classic (and not so classic) movies. Together they investigate the killing of fellow Solar Patrol officer Lon Salonikis, and the deadly new drug Hyper.

Space Cops is a fun little futuristic whodunit where bad guys lurk around every corner. It has clever dialogue and interesting characters. This is not heavy stuff, but there is a lot here to like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Futuristic Reality with present action
The cover is very appealing and is a good portrayal of what the reader hasin store. The described future in this book seems be to what policing ofspace could be like and is written in a very realist matter. The readercould be fool to believe that the story is occuring in present time.Theplot gives a present sitiution in today's society and manifests itself inthe future setting and allows for reader to be to clearly invision thefuture, it's characters and the action of the story. The different settingwere described excellently since most have notbeen in space or on theplanets in the book. The main character of Space Cops is shown to beemotional in way that doesn't focus purely on the action of the story butdoesn't create a character that is not focused on the plot. This allows thereader to know what the character feels about his job as a police officerand his life away from policing. This is not to say that the plot deals withcharacters,it allows for imagnative action that can be seem in the mind'seye and is not easily forgotten, even long after putting down the book.Irecommend this story for all sci-fi readers that also enjoy an actionpacked police drama.I would also like to recommend the other books in theSpace Cops series if you enjoyed Mindblast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful characterization!!!
What a great original book about being a cop on the space beat.It haswonderful characterization with upbeat tempo and a plot that keeps youguessing.Even though it is out of print try to get a copy anyway,I thinkyou would be glad you did. 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this series!
This is a great fantasy series for any age reader. It kept my attention throughout, and I really grew to care about the characters. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Autism to the Nth Degree!
Although I was never a fan of the science fiction/fantasy genres, I loved this book. The young wizards were appealing characters who reside in very real Nassau County New York communities. Each wizard is introduced to readers, so people who have not read the previous works in this series won't feel like they have to play catch up to understand the flow of the story.

Kit, the wizard who is featured most prominently in this book discovers his beloved dog Ponch has some wizardlike properties. Boy and dog are able to communicate in ways they had never previously been able to do. Nita, another young wizard in their midst is still grieving over the death of her mother, whose life was prolonged thanks to Nita's magical prowess.

Enter Darryl. A boy with severe autism, Darryl faces severe communication challenges and is enrolled in a self-contained program in a local Nassau County School. Kit finds himself in the mind of this child, whose speech is limited at best, sporadic at worst. He discovers Darryl mulls things over from different perspectives; changes his mind frequently; is highly imaginative as his mental imagery will attest to. Along with this information, Kit learns of the dark powers of the challenging forces of the Lone Power who threatens their very safety.

Darryl has prescient dreams; this is a characteristic many of Stephen King's characters have. Darryl's autism is presented in a plausible and sympathetic fashion; although this book does not purport to be any kind of a diagnostic tool, it is delightful to see a wizard with autism and to see autism portrayed in a very different genre.

Kudos to Duane for presenting autism in a logical and accurate fashion. This book is beautifully and brilliantly written to include autism in a very different context. I really like the way Kit's mother provided him with reading materials about autism and described it as best she could. I thought it was a lovely act of grace on her part to allow Kit to take a day off from school so he could study autism with the idea of helping Darryl.

4-0 out of 5 stars Young Wizards Alone
In the previous book in this series, "A Wizard's Dilemma," the focus was on Nita (Juanita) Callahan, while Kit (Christopher) Rodriguez became more of a supporting character to Nita's activities. In this, the sixth book in the series, Diane Duane has Kit take the leading role with Nita initially in the background.

In the previous book Nita worked very hard to save her mother's life. Nita managed to prolong her mother's life as she fought cancer, but ultimately her mother succumbed. The opening of this book finds Nita morose and grieving and Kit is temporarily without his partner. It turns out magic has been rubbing off on Kit's dog Ponch, who has developed some interesting magical abilities of his own. Kit works to discover the extent of Ponch's powers and the meaning of Ponch's powers.

While Kit is trying to figure out Ponch's powers he finds himself in the mind of Darryl, an autistic boy. Darryl's mind is a continually changing and often surrealistic landscape of themes and imagery, often confusing, always fascinating to Kit. Kit discovers that Darryl is in an intense and long-running battle with the Lone Power, a battle in which the Lone Power is extremely vicious and vindictive, for reasons that Kit will eventually need to discover.

While Kit and Ponch are learning about Ponch's abilities and Darryl, Nita has strange and sometimes bizarre dreams. It takes some time for Nita and Kit to discover that Kit, Nita and Ponch are all interacting with Darryl. The trio eventually discover that Darryl has the Lone Power under control, but Darryl need not keep battling the Lone Power and Kit and Nita can show Darryl how to end the battles.

This book looks at autism from a very interesting and unique viewpoint and describes the world as an autistic person might perceive it. Diane makes a very good attempt to describe a poorly understood condition, and the results make very good reading.

While many of the books in this series stand alone, this book would suffer from the lack of background. At the very least I recommend reading the first book in the series, "So You Want to Be a Wizard," preferably the second book in the series, "Deep Wizardry," and the fifth book in the series, "A Wizard's Dilemma." However, I also recommended in my review of the latter book reading "A Wizard Abroad" prior to reading that book. The only book in this series that adds little background information is the third book, "High Wizardry."

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Old Days...
When men were men, women were women and bar fights were bar fights.Officers Glyndower and O'Bannion, Solar Police, are sent out to the Outer Belt, a ring of asteroids beyond Jupiter, to investigate the fact that more than the normal number of ships have been disappearing. Now, mining asteroids and normal space travel is dangerous to begin with. Yet the number of disppearances have gotten too high to ignore. So now the two officers must find out the truth behind all the ships gone missing. And what they find is NOT just a case of aggressive claim jumpers or piracy.
This book is the second one in the series and, like the first, has great character development, a good plot and a great hard sci-fi setting. Also lots of action, humor and a cool battle in the last few chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rounding up Intergalactic Trash!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thin
Not only is the book itself thin, the plot and the characters are too.How thin? Well let me say that sometimes the game mechanics shine through them. If you are looking for true Sci-Fi, or anything heavier than a McDonalds' Value meal, look elsewhere.Unless you are nostalgic for the video game, or need something to fill out your time in the bathroom then this book may be worth a read. Personally, I recommend finding something meatier.

5-0 out of 5 stars X-COM A BOOK AND POSSIBLE MOVIE
I loved X-COM the book and the game, I wish more books were written and I love the game. I would say a movie about X-COM would rake in the dough literally. I wish it were longer and there should have been a sequal but hey I am happy with it anyway. Hope everyone else enjoys it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much to drool over, but fun like the game.
Thing is, I couldn't imagine how someone would put the game's content into novel form. And after reading the novel, I still can't.This was a really quick read, and it had sort of a superficial bite to it.None of the characters are really worth caring about, and it doesn't go into much detail about the technologies or species of aliens. But none of that really matters much; I don't think anyone was expecting a masterpiece here.

If ya liked the game, you'll probably have fun with the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xcom, a good game, now a good book
This book fits in nicely with the game. If you were interested and enjoyed the gameplay, this book will also entertain you. It takes you right along as if you were in a mission of the game. It could stand to be more descriptive, and perhaps some more character development. BUT as it stands, it is very entertaining, and I think works well with the Xcom saga.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty bad
It was a pretty boring book with cardboard characters, non-descript situations and tedious pacing. While the game was pretty good, it had no plot onto which to latch a book.

Remember the nondescript paper doll-likeagents you use?The book will give you the same feeling about thecharacters, only there is no sense of dread in the missions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Competently Done, But Still
This book landed in my basket because of The Book of Night with Moon and its sequel. When I started it, I thought, "Now, I have read about these characters before, haven't I?" And yep, I had. I didn't rememberthem off-hand, though things came back.

The trouble is, this book isgoing to slip my mind by next week.

This is competently done, decentlyplotted, and the characters are both fairly likeable and fairlyinteresting. But these guys are interchangeable with any other group ofcharacters from any number of novels.

That nest of adverbial phrasescovers it. My feeling about this is ambiguous. There is absolutely nothingwrong with this book. But it's a good thing that it's in paperback, or I'dbe feeling cheated right now, and probably annoyed.

Feel free to buy it.It will give you a couple pleasant hours, but you won't add to your alreadyover-flowing bookshelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Conclusion to a great Series
Diane has really outdone herself on this entire series and she doesn't leave reader hanging.I think that she has added a lot to the universe with yet another well written book. ... Read more

This year the fabric of the cosmos is unravelling, and dark and dangerous things are leaking across the borders...For five unsuspecting teenagers, their lives will never be the same again as they discover the hidden terrors lurking beneath the surface of their quiet town and experience the most horrifying Halloween of them all...

2-0 out of 5 stars Revisionist Romulans
The Romulans used to be my favorite Star Trek villains. I read the Rihannsu series because I thought it would be a fun exploration of Romulan culture and history. However, I barely recognized the Romulans in Rihannsu. The book degrades them and seems to radically alter their characters. The main character, Ael, seems too perfect, while the rest of the Romulans seem like a bunch of buffoons. Furthermore, the book radically changes Romulan history that just doesn't seem realistic. It's too bad - the Romulans as presented in the Original Series were fascinating characters who had both honor and deviousness. The Romulans in Rihannsu have little of either. ... Read more
