Not for long time Dumas fans, but nice for an introduction to his works.
This is a nice collection, but some of the novels appear to be either weaker translations (phrase or sentence translations instead of word for word) or are abridgements of the full Dumas originals.

Chapter error in Count of Monte Cristo
I love these Mobi Reference editions of the works of classic authors.Generally the Table of Contents and the chapter links work well.In the Count of Monte Cristo, however, chapters 81-90 and 91-100 appear before Chapters 61-70 and 71-80.This caused me quite a bit of confusion, so I went back to the Table of Contents and, sure enough, the links to these sections also lead to the same error.I suggest you use caution and follow chapter numbers as you read.I attempted to send a message to customer service at either Mobi Reference or Amazon, but it proved impossible.It is not a big enough problem to keep me from buying these fabulous mobireference Kindle editions, but I've learned to pay more attention to the mechanics!

I've purchased over 10 of these complete author collections from this publisher. These collections work superbly on the Kindle. Take Mark Twain collection. The collection includes huge number of Mark Twain's works all in one place, searchable and well-organized. If I would have purchased all these books separately, searching for `The Gilded Age' among hundreds of other books on my Kindle would be a nightmare. With Mobile Reference collections, I simply click `Works of Mark Twain', then click Novels> `The Gilded Age'. I can also click `List of works in alphabetical order' > `G' > `Gilded Age'. If I forget the book title but remember that `The Gilded Age' was written by Mark Twain early in his career, I can click on `List of works in chronological order' > (1873) `The Gilded Age'.

If I want another author, say, Charles Dickens, I click `Home' > `Works of Charles Dickens'. If I want Dostoevsky, I click `Works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky'. I think this format is perfect for organizing books on the Kindle.

Inside collections, each book has links to chapters and footnotes. The text is nicely formatted and seems to be complete and accurate - something that cannot always be said about inexpensive ebooks. I think these collections are great bargains both in terms of saved money, time, and book organization!

I won't waste words
I love his books most notably the count of monte cristo. If you want a great fiction based in historical reality chose that one. If you want a great history with fiction pick this one. Very interesting but please note. IT DOES NOT HAVE CLOSURE. Im not saying it left things unsaid, i'm saying it ends with about 300 pages to go.

I Miss Roland De Montrevel
This book was a very fair book and it had some unforgetable scenes and thanks to them I was reluctant to relinquish reading even to sleep but in some places the story was weak and there was one part that really annoyed me. Hector's cousin Jane killing herself beacause she could have him almost everybody looses someone they love and it hurts but we get over it we move on we heal. I know women were prone to be weak in those days but this Jane character's dramatic heartbreak really irritated me. There was barely any mention of the heartbreak of her family and there was absoloutly no consideration for the guilt Hector must have gone through to think that he contributed to her heartbreak and her death. If I were there I would tell her heartbreak heals and she should grow up and stop being so selfish while other more romantic readers might think I am being unfair that's what I think.

If the readers have read the prequels to this book they will remember Roland de Montrevel. He was my kind of character, he was strong and loyal and he didn't care what anyone else thought. I hoped since they didn't find his body at the end that Dumas might have wanted to write him back in but I doubt it. And anyone who is still pondering the mystery of why Roland wanted to kill hiself I think I've solved it. I think that in his battle with the Arabs he got shot in the Penis.

Given that he refused to tell Bonaparte this on fear of ridicule and he never told Bonaparte about his treatment at the hands of the doctor during his imprisonment and he is keen to avoid marriage at all costs I think they all point to this conclusion and in Dumas' conversation with a journalist in the Companions of jehu introduction also give clues which point to this.

Claude Schopp said he was going to use Dumas' notes to write a sequel to this book, I hope he does.

Who is the last Cavalier?
My father is intrigued with Alexandre Dumas and his writing style. He searched and searched for this book at a warehouse store but had no success. I finally just purchased it for him and to my surprise he was happy and is enjoying it at his leisure.

Dumas' Last Stand
I haven't read Alexandre Dumas since I was a teen (a long time ago), but I remember "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" quite well. Then again, what I remember best may be the movie versions I watched again and again as a kid. When I saw that a "lost" novel had been published for the first time, I thought it was time to revisit Dumas' work. I'm glad that I did.

As a finished unfinished novel, "The Last Cavalier" is fair and worth three "stars." It was originally published as a newspaper serial and Dumas never had the chance to re-edit/rewrite it for book publication as he did his other works. Dumas was paid by the word, and there are thousands here that would surely have been cut. The titular hero, Hector (René, Comte Leo) de Sainte-Hermine, is over the top invincible and incomparable. He has no flaws (in a Doc Savage, pulp fiction, sort of way), so it's hard to identify with him; and Dumas interrupts Hector's story too often with what's happening elsewhere in history. Did I mention he was paid by the word? Still, Hector's panache and romp through Napoleonic history is a tour de force worth reading. Characters like George Cadoudal, the corsair (privateer) Surcouf, Napoleon, Nelson at Trafalgar, and Minister of Police Fouché come alive with idiosyncrasies and feats of personal codes of honor to delight any swashbuckling fan.

For me, as a writer, what was even more fascinating was the book's preface by Claude Schopp, who found and reconstructed the novel. In it, Dumas is quoted as saying that he is "more a novelizing historian than a historical novelist." In this light, I look at the book as more of a history than a novel and am interested in re-exploring Dumas' other books from that perspective. Also, in the preface is a letter from Dumas outlining his complete plan for the novel. It is as complete a synopsis of the whole story as any editor could wish for. So it was great to be able to refer to that and see where and how Dumas added and changed the story line (Hector's entire time as a seaman and in India are not in the outline). This alone was worth the extra "star."

I highly recommend this book to any reader, Dumas fan or not.

The story is great.....
As I read The Last Cavalier by Alexander Dumas I couldn't help but think I was reading a story intended for people in the nineteenth century.Certainly, Alexander Dumas himself never thought as he penned this story that it would premier in the 21st century.

Let me admit right up front that I am not a Dumas scholar and I haven't read all of his works.Like many I've restricted myself to The Three Muskateers and The Count of Monte Cristo, probably to my misfortune.But now I can chalk up another Dumas novel, and a fair one at that.Who knows, maybe I'll read them all.

The Last Cavalier is the story of Compte Hector de Sainte Hermine, a royalist who is put off by the young blade Napoleon.Imprisoned and then released, Hector heads to sea where the real drama of this story rests.However, in the end I never felt that sympathetic to the main character or his plight, and I'm not really sure he's that likable.I also had a hard time getting through the book.I stopped on several occasions to read other books.I always knew I'd return, but it did take a commitment to finish.It's not the page turner The Three Muskateers is, nor does it have the drama of The Count of Monte Cristo.In the end it is probably unfair to compare The Last Cavalier to these earlier works since The Last Cavalier wasn't finished.I suspect Dumas might have edited and perhaps rewritten parts of this work.

If you're a Dumas fan then I recommend The Last Cavalier.

Patience First and You Shall Reap the Rewards
The second part of The Three Muskeeters quadrilogy, Twenty Years After starts off on a somber note and ends in a thrilling fashion. It may not have the specialness and flair like the original, but it's highly entertaining as well. In a way, I thought the book was somewhat slow for four hundred pages or so, and I felt the momentum started to die after the death of Charles I. But, the final three hundred pages really took a life of its own. The same characters are back from the original, there are a few new changes of characters in the same positions, and there are many more new ones that will play a huge part in the story. The plots are intricate as usual, and D'Artagnan's wit once again shines through. Although loosely based on French history (and the history of England is thrown in) of the 17th century, Alexandre Dumas adds his own spice of flavor to the events so to allow the four main characters and their servants to play a large part in them. I got to learn a lot about France of that period, and in a way, I have to be French enough to appreciate it because I was losing interest in the politics. I wanted to stick with the main characters, but there was a feeling of being inundated with everything else that was going on in the Louvre, on the streets of Paris, and also in England. So, there is a decidedly Royalist feeling associated with the book which turned me off. Meanwhile, I was primarily surprised at the fact that D'Artagnan didn't progress at all career-wise for twenty years after doing a huge service to the Queen. And I was more surprised also at the fact that he stopped getting in touch with his three friends over the years. That's a very baffling sight, and when they got together, it gets more astounding that there is a deep chasm between the two sides of the four friends during Twenty Years After. When Athos had his chance to end his adversary the first time, he declines it as the biggest flaw of his is honor. That left me perplexing because what if he took the chance, then King Charles I might be saved? That would be a bigger honor. All in all, Twenty Years After will prove to be a thrilling read when patience is first exercised during the buildup of the plots and then they will begin to unfold for the final three hundred pages. The story continues with The Vicomte de Bragelonne. By the way, I read the Oxford edition, and it does get annoying when the (richly informative) notes are referred to the back of the book. I mostly didn't do it because I didn't want my flow of reading broken up in this manner. On the other hand, I liked the introduction by David Coward, but it's best to read that after the completion of Twenty Years After. The map of Paris was supplied for the book; how about the maps of France and England and also London?

One cannot put it down, it totally sweeps you along.
One of the best books I have ever read. It is wonderful.Makes you feel as though you lived there at that time. You get to know the muskateers as intimately as part of your family. I love their sense of loyalty and honor. It is humorous, entertaining, moving, adventurous, one does not want it to end. Each one comes to life and you feel part of them as a group and individually as you follow in their footsteps. You will have your favorite muskateer and as their life develops, so will the closeness you feel with him.I truly cannot say enough about it.Enjoy!

Very not bad
Dumas is one of the best novelists of his time. This one is definitely worth a look if you enjoyed "The Three Musketeers."

Bad Kindle formatting
This review is for the Kindle formatting, not for the novel itself.Unfortunately the publisher has decided that the author should be alphabetized on the Kindle by his first name instead of his last name.Most of the Western world prefers to list authors by last name, but this publisher must be trying out something new.

Historical fiction from the master, more mature than The Three Musketeers
This highly-pleasing sequel to The Three Musketeers should please any fan of Dumas.While including most of the same characters as that first book of the series, this one presents a significantly different reading experience.With a more complex plot, somewhat less 'action', and a greater degree of political intrigue, TWENTY YEARS AFTER is really a more mature book than its predecessor.Two decades after the close of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, we find our heroes living individual (and somehow unfulfilling) lives apart from one another.As d'Artagnan decides that he's had enough of living in the shadows of his old exploits, and decides to take a more active role in present day politics, the current adventure begins.After reintroducing us to each of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as d'Artagnan tries to recruit them for new adventures, Dumas sets in motion events that see our heroes intricately involved in world events that will shape the future of Europe.

One of the most interesting aspects of TWENTY YEARS AFTER is the growth of d'Artagnan.From the wide-eyed and inexperienced young man of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, d'Artagnan has become a seasoned and extremely confident soldier by the start of this one.While maintaining his rascaliness, he has developed a sharp wit and a rather devious imagination.Indeed, you will see that it is d'Artagnan's strong mind that enables him to succeed more than his strong arm in this book (as opposed to THE THREE MUSKETEERS).Here d'Artagnan is actually looked to as the de facto leader of the intrepid foursome that before he only wanted to follow.This more developed d'Artagnan now rivals the Count of Monte Cristo as my favorite Dumas character.

As a piece of historical fiction, TWENTY YEARS AFTER is much more demanding than THE THREE MUSKETEERS.Those without a fairly strong foundation in mid 17th century French and English history might find themselves somewhat lost as Dumas expects a certain amount of knowledge of the setting in his readers.In this aspect, the Oxford World's Classic edition will help immensely (see below).While the reader is still treated to a grand adventure, with all of the aspects that readers of Dumas expect, the enjoyment of this book will only be enhanced by a good understanding of the history behind this work and the implications it has on the future.Throughout TWENTY YEARS AFTER, d'Artagnan and company find themselves intimately involved in major historical events and typically influencing their outcome.

As usual, this Oxford World's Classics edition is excellent.With valuable explanatory notes and a detailed list of characters in the back of the book, you'll be able to navigate this complex story with a greater level of understanding than would be likely with the text only.The explanatory notes are denoted with a simple "*", and remain inconspicuous while reading the story, not distracting the reader like same-page notes have a tendency to do.You'll find that depending on your mood or your curiosity, you might or might not flip to the back of the book to look up individual notes.

Good until missing parts of the Vicomte De Bragelonne
I read the 3 Musketeers and 20 Years Later.I enjoyed the books and the publisher did a good job linking the table of contents.My concern right now is on The Vicomte De Bragelonne.

In this set of books The Vicomte De Bragelonne starts off Chapter 1 with this chapter: Showing What Neither The Naiad Nor Dryad had Anticipated.Everything I find says that this is a later chapter in The Vicomte De Bragelonne or it is in 10 Years Later.

Clearly it is missing either a whole book or a large set of chapters. Are others reading these books and finding this error?After some research I've identified that the publisher basically left out Chapter 1: The Letter through Chapter 133:Royal Psychology from the full book of The Vicomte De Bragelonne.

So this is What the publisher has done:
- The Vicomte de Bragelonne - this version has Chapter 1 as "Showing What Neither the Naiad or Dryad Had Anticipated" (This chapter would be the 134th chapter in the full printing of The Vicomte de Bragelonne, the 59th chapter of certain printings of Ten Years Later, or the 41st chapter of certain printings of Louise de la Vallière). I have found no other version of this book that starts with the aforementioned chapter.This version of The Vicomte de Bragelonne then is a the rest of the whole book of the The Vicomte de Bragelonne. It is not divided up into Ten Years After, Louise de la Valliere, and The Man and The Iron Mask but it is missing the chapters mentioned above.So basically it appears to be a full version missing 133 chapters (or half the book).

The next three books appear to be the proper division containing all chapters:
-10 Years Later seems to be the same version as this:[...]
- Louise de la Valliere seems to be the same as this: [...]
-The Man in the Iron Mask seems to be the same as:[...]

So if you combine all the worksit is missing Chapters:"The Letter" to "In Which Monsieur Fouquet Acts."This is 75 chapters missing.

I have had questions with this publisher in the past and found that when I tried to email them the emails bouncedback and I even tried to call; all to no avail. I want to know if these books are abridged and where they got them.

I'm now disappointed about The Vicomte of Bragelonne.

I'm also concerned that the Count Of Monte Cristo is incomplete - I haven't done the research yet but I'm suspicious. ... Read more

Too slow
I love old English period book plots.That being said, I read about 100 pages of the Queens Necklace and wondered if it was ever going anywhere.I couldn't take it anymore, I deleted it.If anyone else has read it and finds it finally had a plot and an actual culmination, please let me know.Reluctantly I may try to pick it back up again... but there are too many other good things to read!

A mediocre translation or was Dumas having a bad-book day? *Review for Wildside Press Edition*
Inquiring minds want to know, although I'm going to lean towards the former. The Queen's Necklace begins ten years after the close of Memoirs of a Physician, as France recovers from the grips of a deadly winter and Marie Antoinette takes pity on Jeanne de Valois who claims to be descended from the Valois side of the monarchy, albeit from the wrong side of the blanket. Jeanne soon takes up with Cardinal de Rohan who in an effort to ingratiate himself at court offers the stunning necklace originally intended as a gift for the infamous Madame du Barry to the Queen. Thus begins Dumas' take on the well known "Affair of the Diamond Necklace" which scandalized France and further degraded public opinion of the monarchy.

Dumas brings characters from the first two books into this story, as the mysterious Balsamo reappears under the new name of Count Cagliostro, Andrée resides at court in service to Marie and falls in love with the Count de Charny (who loves the Queen) and Philip (called Philippe in this book) returns from America and also finds himself madly in love with the Queen. Andrée's former servant Nicole (who bears a striking resemblance to the Queen) now goes by the name of Oliva and is drawn into Jeane's schemes as she masquerades as the Queen setting off further scandals, and eventually Marie and de Charny are caught in a compromising position which leads to a drastic ploy by Marie to save both herself and de Charny. Will this ploy fulfill the secret desire of our heroine Andrée, or does a twist of fate forever change her happiness to great sorrow? I'll never tell, but that was one heck of a plot twist!

Unfortunately, what should have been a ripping good read was ruined by a dreadful translation. I've read many works of Dumas and his storylines always move quickly with plentiful action and sparkling dialogue and displays the foibles and machinations of the French Monarchy to perfection. This book was stilted, slow paced with some of the most un-Dumas like dialogue I've ever come across. Worse yet, since most chapters were 3-4 pages long (this from an author who was paid by the word!!??) and from comparing the page count of this version (329) to that of another (432) I'm guessing quite a bit of the story was left out, and frankly I would have bailed on the book except for the fact that I intend to read the rest of the series and didn't want to lose the story. The first two in the series of six I've read were much older publications, published in the early 1900's by P.F. Collier and Son. If you are interested in reading the entire series I recommend you check your library and/or shop the online used sellers for one of those copies.Next up in the series, Taking the Bastile.

I do want to note that this review is for the Wildside Press edition and my comments about translation problems should not be reflected against other publishers of this book. I'm stating this as I notice that any reviews posted for one version of this book are showing up on others, and I suspect my review will show up on those editions as well.

Quality and Options
The quality was fine but what I found exceptional was the fact that I COULD have bought this book on-line in hardcover as inexpensively as at Barnes and Noble in paperback. I WILL know better next time!

The Count
Our Christian book club read this book from the "classics" genre.Although I have enjoyed many classics, it's rare for me to read a book written in the 19th c. or prior that I would consider a "page turner."This is a suspenseful, can't put it down book comparable to those written by many of our best adventure novelists of today.Great book!!

There was nothing wrong :)
I ordered the used version of the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas and the book had said it was in "good" condition, but I felt like it was in very good conition. The cover had no knicks or bent edges to it and the inside was just fine. There were no markings or folds in it at all, and I'm pretty sure there weren't ripped pages.

Awful Abridged Version
My copy of this book says absolutely nowhere that it is abridged - not the back cover, front cover, title page, copyright page... no where. Yet, it is abridged. And it leaves out really relevant, important, and incredibly beautiful passages. If you don't mind an abridged version, get it, but be aware that you're missing a lot of the beauty of the full version as well as full chapters full of character motivation and background.

Suspence and Excitement in the Age of Napoleon
This is a classic Dumas novel and one of my favorites.I am not sure why it does not get the attention it deserves.The story revolves around a courageous band of young men who steal money from the republican government to fund the royalist counter-revolution and a young, equally courageous, and rather reckless, aide-de-camp of Napoleon, who swears to eliminate them.Complicating matters though is the fact that his sister has fallen in love with the leader of the band of robbers.Set against the coup of Napoleon, this novel really does have it all: a duel, ghosts, murder, intrigue, battles, robberies, courtroom drama, romance, and an unforgettable ending.The best part is that the main characters on each side are portrayed in such a way as to make you love them both and wish that both sides can win and everyone can be happy.Alas, this is not to be though.This is a great tale and one of Dumas's best works.You will enjoy every word of it!

Mystery Solved
SPOILERS (but does give too much away):
Roland De Montrevel was my kind of character, he was strong and loyal and he didn't care what anyone else thought. I hoped since they didn't find his body at the end that Dumas might have wanted to write him back in but I doubt it. And anyone who is still pondering the mystery of why Roland wanted to kill hiself I think I've solved it. I think that in his battle with the Arabs he got shot in the Penis.

Given that he refused to tell Bonaparte this on fear of ridicule and he never told Bonaparte about his treatment at the hands of the doctor during his imprisonment and he is keen to avoid marriage at all costs I think they all point to this conclusion and in Dumas' conversation with a journalist in the Companions of jehu introduction also give clues which point to this.

I really miss Roland and I hope that if Claude Schopp (Dumas scholar) writes another sequal to The last cavalier like he said he would then I hope we get to see him again.

Epic tale of Napoleanic era
The tale of Roland de Montrevel and his family is intertwined wonderfully with the rise of Napolean and the internal strife of France immediately after the Terror. Dumas has woven a nice web of deceit, love, and honor amidst the bygone era of gentlemen. By focusing on the first rumblings of Napoleanic rule, we get a strong taste of the leftover pain of a murdered monarchy, an anarchic period of divided loyalties and a national desire for stability. Dumas writes his narrative well, the multiple plots parallel nicely and there are great moments of excitement. If you like historical fiction set in this time and place, this is a good read. ... Good for Students
I am a teacher, and I selected this version of the Count of Monte Cristo for my students. It is affordable, and a decent translation. Of course, I'm sure there are better ones, but this one served my needs well.

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel (the unabridged Robin Buss translation), so I ordered 40 of these books to read to my summer school class.

This Dover Edition is based on the antiquated English traslation from about 100 years ago, and it shows.The jaw-breaker sentences and intimidating vocabulary offended even a word-nerd like myself.On top of that, there are many typos in the book--as if they ran a quick spell-check and substituted incorrect words (ex "door" instead of "doctor:" p 357: "The door laid the girl back on her chair.")I don't know if there is a better abridged version, but I recommend the 1100-page Robin Buss translation.It's longer, but is written in modern English, so it's much easier to read. ... I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to read the sequel. As with all the Dumas I have read, it is escapism at it's finest. No, it wasn't the best novel I ever read, nor the most factual portrayal of history, but it spurred my interest to learn more about the time period and actual characters from history books. This story would make a great screenplay too. I think that is Dumas' genius. He creates great characters and teaches history "romanticized". It is the reader's responsibility to remember that it is embellished and to read other sources for the "truth". These were serials in news papers after all.
The reviewer who over simplifies (denigrates)the story line in their review should be banned from reading Dumas as they miss the point entirely. Dianna was a virtuous woman who was saved from a monster by a monster. She and Bussy were cheated by fate and royalty of their happiness together. The situation drove an otherwise honorable and brave gentleman to compromise his principles for love, thinking justice would be served in the end. He payed the price of poetic justice while acquitting himself well with his sword.
Chicot was paternalistic in dealing with Henri III and not, in my opinion devious or self interested.
And, in a theme I perceive in other of Dumas' works, the common man is subject to the whim of kings and princes while the kings and princes answer to God.
Vive Dumas!

very Good Book
This was quite a treasure for one of the lesser known Dumas novels, after reading all the Classics,I started to get disappointed with what was left (Queen Margot, Knight of Maison Rouge) as it seemed subpar to the more well known novels.Chicot was certainly not a disapoointment.excellent stroy and lots of adventure.Highly recommended

good book but too many typos in this edition
Great book if you are a Dumas fan, and especially if you've read "La Reine Margot".But this edition (ISBN 1-60096-103-7) of the book is full of typos.They even misspelled the name on the front cover - if you click on the "Search inside the book", you'll see the name of the book blatantly misspelled as "Chico the Jester".These typos get really annoying in an otherwise great book.I would not buy books from this publisher (Waking Lion Press) any more.

It's not just a love story
Dumas' profound knowledge of French history is amazing. When reading his books, one should always look beyond the plot and read between the lines. He describes the era of intrigues and struggle for power in such a fascinating, colorful and dramatic way that one can only wonder at his talent. Dumas' readers become part of his stories. The ease with which he puts history down on paper truly makes him one of the greatest historians of all times!

The story is one of my favorites. But the book itself is terribly abridged. Whole chapters are missing. I know it because I have read the original. But it's still a great read!

yes its a good book, king henry sits in his castle fagging around, his brother d'anjou wants to be a king, because he's got nothing better to do all day long and has no playstation 2. bussy in love with somebody else's wife and wants to score so is her husband. chicot king's jester is so smart and perceptive that i think the writer of this book used chicot instead of his real name, bussy dies, because he won't give up monsoro's wife and monsoro is so h0rny and because of it very angry. oops i just read you entire book ... D'Artagnan series
This is a book (or rather a series of books) that I re-read every few years, and I always find it so compelling that once I start, I cannot stop until I've read it all - even though I obviously know how it ends, hahaha!!!!!!!!
Alexandre Dumas is a great narrator who not only creates extremely interesting stories, but who also helps us learn so many details about this historical period without ever getting too academical. It feels like you're reading very good fiction while in fact most of it is actually totally true. I highly recommend this series; the only thing that I find somewhat sad is how this wonderful friendship of D'Artagnan and his fellow musketeers falls apart through the years - but exactly this is what makes it so true to real life ..... ... A Bit Slow at the Outset But Still a Wonderful Kindle Freebie
I would recommend buying this book *now* while it's still free.It would certainly be worth the $1.99 list price, but free is even better.

If you've read any of Dumas' other novels you'll probably like this one.It begins rather slowly and without drama but the intensity quickly builds as does the intrigue and violence.Writing reviews about mysteries is challenging because I don't want to give too much away but I do want to encourage fans of Dumas' other works, Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, and those who just enjoy period literature to read this book because it really is a good one.

The characters are lively and there is even a strong secondary female character. Dumas' writing, while not overly emotional in and of itself, definitely provokes emotion in defense of his strong characters. The villian is repulsive and unlikeable while the soon to be identified hero is awkwardly charming and by turns wiley.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, but in the spirit of full disclosure I was an English major that primarily dealt with British literature so perhaps that's why I enjoyed this book so much.For non-English majors this book might be too stilted or old timey but for anyone who enjoys mysteries, suspense, or gardening this book is a great freebie to download. ... pick a different kindle edition...
okay, its nice that it's .99 and another thing i like about it is that all the books are in a single file, but really, it's a junky edition. For example, in some place it will repeat whole chapters, so you have to sit there clicking through a gazillion pages of stuff you already read. It also has no active table of contents and with a file that big...urg! I wouldn't buy this if i were you and im really glad i didn't pay more than a buck for it...

the sequel to three musketeers
i loved the three musketeers and looked forward to following the four friends though another adventure. with this in mind i really enjoyed the book. for me it could have started a little faster as having recently read the earlier book i was ready to get straight into the action.

After this initial slow down i found myself reabsorbed into the tale and was again sad to see it end. I enjoyed it enough to move straight into the third book but only give 4 stars because as a standalone book the first was better and so deserves the higher 5 stars. for anyone who really liked the first story they should read this book. for others who found the first just ok then i wouldn't bother with 20 years after.
