5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to know how it all started
I found this book at my dad's school library and read it in one day.Fantastic! I'd read almost all of Lois Duncan's work, and had alwayswondered how she got started. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My four year old daughter and I checked this book out from our local library, and it was love at first read. The language is rhythmic and poetic (fantastic for reading aloud), and the story is lively and engaging. The book tells the story of two children raised in the circus. When a ferocious tiger escapes his cage, it looks as if one or both will be eaten--but not these brave children! They tell the tiger to stop and obey the laws of the circus (like not eating people), and, obediently, he stops and returns to his lair because "you don't mess around with that kind of kid."The story is empowering for young readers, emphasizing bravery in the face of adversity and manners in the midst of chaos. My daughter wants to check it out again at every library trip, so I've just bought her her very own copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic, whimsical, brilliant !
This book about a "terrible day at the circus" is one of the wittiest, most intelligent children's books I've ever read. The rhythm of the lines is beautiful; the rhymes are natural; the story is intriguing. Our now 3-year-old has been enjoying it for about 9 months now, and still asks for it constantly... esp. after a trip to the circus!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has it all for kids!
This is a terrific children's book! The writing is both whimsical (the tiger "doesn't like the food at the circus" so he chases the two circus kids) and rhythmic. The illustrations complement the author's sense of humor. My son thought a book about a tiger chase was "awesome, mom!"We read a lot of books around our house and this is by far one of my favorites. ... In the dark of night a sleek prowler sneaks through the kitty door.Although content to curl up in a warm lap in the bright sunshine, when eyelids close, the lure of the outdoors calls to the wandering feline. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I purchased this book for my granddaughter when she was one. She is approaching her third birthday and I Walk at Night continues to be one of her favorites. The colorful illustrations are appealing, the text simple and soothing, the story meaningful especially if your little one has a cat as a pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I love this book. The paintings are beautiful, and the short poem is great, too. It is a great book for cat lovers, which my daughter is already becomming. She loves to look at the pictures of the kitty, and I think it is a book she will enjoy for years to come. I read it to her often, and she is only 6 months old, but seems to really enjoy it. I highly recommend this to cat lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for every child's library
I bought this book for my nephew some years ago, and over time it became quite a favorite.Other reviewers aptly describe the gorgeous, stylized artwork that plays the dark shadows off of bright objects like the cat's eyes; the artwork riveted both my nephew and any adult reading the book to him.

The rhythmic, almost hypnotic, text flows beautifully until the end of the book, leaving the reader with a feeling of hushed nighttime, perfect for transitioning the little bugger to bed. What delighted me the most is how early my nephew would be able to finish each of the unique couplings... such "I like the taste of cream/but while I drink I dream/of birds and fishes".Of course, this wonderful book also created a 2-year-old who used the word "saunter" in daily conversation.:)

Now that we're expecting a child of our own, this is a must-have for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaing picturebook illustrated with truly beautiful art.
Lois Duncan's I Walk At Night presents an engaging picture book storypaired with Steve Johnson and Lou Facher's beautiful paintings. Darkdrawings pair with the very easy picture story of a cat's nighttimewanderings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
I saw this at a school book sale while I was pregnant with our last child. We ended up buying a second because we wore the cassette out. This refers to the book and cassette combination.
With our new (13 years old now!) baby, it became a part of our evening routines, the stories read, the songs listened to, and it was peaceful.
I still recall how it started: a soft wind blowing through the breeze, and a lovely voice soeaking quietly "It's bedime now. You've played hard today and I know you must be tired ...".
It was a point of amusement that we figured if we ever accidentally put the tape in the car and played it we would fall asleep at the wheel within 20 seconds (grin)
Truly, I most highly recommend this, and the memories will last a lifetime.
A kindred Mom, soon to be a Grandmother! ~Mariance

5-0 out of 5 stars if only it were still in print.....
This is the most beautiful, enchanting tape of lullabies I have ever heard. Lois Duncan (yes, of I Know What You Did Last Summer fame) wrote the exquisite lyrics for the tape that accompanies this book when her grandchild was born. Her daughter is actually the singer. I have never found a collection of lullabies to equal this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Do Navajos Always Put a Border on Their Famous Blankets?
This is a native american folk tale explaining why the Navajo people always place a decorative border on their blankets. The art work is stunning but the writing is confusing and the story doesn't quite jell. The book is a good addition to book collections about native American folk tales but there are other books that are better than this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good character building story
This book is one we have chosen to use as cultural enrichment in a classroom setting. It teaches character traits like integrity or being a person of your word and the consequences that go along with wrong choices. It is rich with cultural customs that can be brought "alive" to students in various subjects such as art, math and social studies. The illustrations are attractive and the overall look of the book and story is more current than some illustrations of Indian legends. ... Read more
