Product Description
When Editions gallimard published "Love, Poetry" (L'amour la poesie) in 1929, the book's success secured Paul Eluard's reputation as perhaps the greatest poet of his immediate generation. Paul Eluard (1895-1952) was one of the founders, along with Andre Breton and Louis Aragon of the Surrealist group. He had rocketed into public view earlier with his collection of Surrealist poems: "Capital of Pain", but "Love, Poetry" cemented his reputation as a poet with a growing international reputation. Despite the continued popularity of this title (it has not been out of print in France since publication) "Love, Poetry" is as unknown to the Anglophone reader as is much of Eluard's work in general. Black Widow Press is pleased to present the first translation into English of this important and still admired work."Love, Poetry" is presented in its entirety in a bilingual edition. translator Stuart kendall also presents an enlightening introduction to the work that places it in the historical context of when it was written and today. ... Product Description
Paul Eluard (1895-1952) is widely considered to be one of France's most important poets. For too long we have been under the misconception that Eluard is to be read only as a Surrealist, and enjoyed or dismissed as such. But Eluard's poetic activity was divided into two stages: his exploratory work in poetics as a Dadaist and then as a Surrealist (1919-1938), and his more traditional yet modern post-Surrealist work from 1938-1952. This latter period was for Eluard a time of passionate love and intense political involvement. The marvelous books of "Last Love Poems (Derniers poemes d'amour)" composed during 1946-1951, give us an idea of Eluard's technical mastery as a mature poet, enabling us to participate in the universality of his poetry, and to understand why he is held in international esteem. This bilingual format translation surveys most of the poems compiled within "Derniers poemes d'amour". Poet Marilyn kallet also includes an enlightening introduction covering Eluard's later works. ... Read more

Product Description
Capital of Pain, first published in 1926, has had a lasting impression on more readers than one might expect. Young Frenchmen between the wars carried it in their backpacks; other poets were dazzled, young and old, all discussed and often argued about this remarkable book. Indeed, it has never gone out of print in France. Today this collection is thought by many to be the key to grasping what Surrealist texts are like. It clearly shows the freshness of early Surrealism, as well as the despair of postwar trauma. Paul Eluard (1895-1952) was a founder, along with Andre Breton and Louis Aragon, of the Surrealist group and was, through the years, the most celebrated poet among that extraordinary grouping of poets. This volume, the first new translation of this work in over thirty years, presents the text of Capital of Pain in its entirety in a bilingual format. Translator Mary Ann Caws also provides an insightful and in depth survey of Eluard's poems and writings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So you like poetry?
It is important that anyone do a little research or have an understanding of this kind of poetry before they do something like buy a book. That is because you may be wasting your money if you do not know what you are getting yourself into.

This book is a collection of fantastic poems from Paul Eluard. He was part of the Surrealist movement in France and his writings have changed many lives including mine. But if you do not like abstract thoughts, have difficulty reading complex literature, or just don't like "weird" stuff, I would suggest skipping this book.On the other hand if you revel in the abstract, enjoy thinking in terms you were not told to think in, by all means spend the $12 to get this book.I'll give you a sample since for some godforsaken reason nobody else has reviewed this book.

The big uninhabitable house-

In the middle of an astonishing island
That her limbs travel
She is nourished by a dazzled world.

The flesh one shows off to the curious
Waits there like harvests
To fall on the riverbanks.

Knowing she'll see further
Her eyes wider in the wind of her hands
She imagines the horizon has unbuckled its belt for her.

**If you want to see a good surrealist film I would also suggest Alphaville, which is how I learned about this phenomenal book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Letters to Gala, Paul Eluard
Interesting book, but it is a MUST to have read the book GALA, or any biography about her, because their life was very unconventional, and in order to understand the letters, the relation between them and others must be known. No doubt Eluard worshiped Gala, in spite of having other women while Gala was away and having similar social life. ... Product Description
The best of Eluard's poems in a bilingual edition as chosen and arranged chronologically by the editor and translator. Surrealist, resistance fighter during the Nazi occupation of Paris, connoisseur of art, litter'ateur, and lover of common people, Eluard exemplifies for many the poet of pure diction. ... Read more
