Product Description

Key writings by one of the most important social reformers of the nineteenth century that speaks to our own turbulent times

Calling on his background as a minister, Ralph Waldo Emerson always brought morality into his political arguments. On issues ranging from women’s rights to slavery to Native American land rights, Emerson felt that each individual should look within himself and make political decisions based on his own conscience. Instead of blindly following the government or society’s beliefs, Emerson often argued for and practiced dissent, a stance maligned by politicians who were trying to take power from the people.

In The Political Emerson, David M. Robinson has brought together the best of Emerson’s essays on politics and social reform. Robinson’s introduction explains the reason for this unique collection by laying out the political impact that Emerson’s writings had during his own time and beyond.

In this major election year, Emerson’s political thought is more valuable than ever. And, as Robinson makes clear in this unique anthology, Emerson’s writings can continue to speak to all of us who hope for a more ethical politics.

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: "Concord Hymn" is a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The first stanza of "Concord Hymn" is inscribed at the base of The Minute Man statue by Daniel Chester FrenchEmerson wrote "Concord Hymn" in 1836 for the dedication of the Obelisk, a battle monument in Concord, Massachusetts that commemorated the men that gave their lives at the Battle of Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775), the first battle of the American Revolution. One source of its power may be Emerson's personal ties to the subject. His grandfather fought in the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The family house, The Old Manse, is next to the bridge mentioned in the poem, and the author wrote the hymn while living there. In 1837, the hymn was sung to the tune "Old Hundredth" during Concord's 4 July celebration. Modern critic Jonathan Mardin reflected on it favorably, calling it a "Too little-known masterpiece." (Note: This version is from The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1904), edited by Edward Waldo Emerson, who noted, "From a copy of this hymn as first printed on slips for distribution among the Concord people at the celebration of the completion of the monument on the battle-ground, I note the differences from the poem here given as finally revised by Mr. Emerson in the Selected Poems." ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1075854 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Work
The work is a remarkable one and it certainly will be called remarkable by those who consider it "mere moonshine" as well as those who look upon it with reverence as the effusion of a prophet-like mind. Whatever may be thought of the merits or of the extravagances of the book, no one, we are sure, can read it without feeling himself more wide awake to the beauty and meaning of Creation.

He sees the world as it really is. He looks on the temporal in the light of the Eternal. "So he comes to look on the world with new eyes." So he learns the high truths which nature teaches.

Product Description

When Emerson began these journals in June of 1838, he "had achieved initial success in each of his main forms of public utterance. The days of finding his proper role and public voice were now behind him...and his...personal life had healed from earlier wounds." Now he was married to Lydia Jackson of Plymouth and was the father of a young son, Waldo. They lived in a large, comfortable house in Concord, only a half-day's drive from Boston but close to the solitude of nature. Still to come was the controversy he would create by his address to the graduating class at Harvard Divinity School an address in which he would say that the Divinity School trained ministers for a dead church. These journals record his responses to the severe criticism and trace his struggles as he overcame the stings of attack with a growing confidence in himself as a thinker, lecturer, and writer.

In addition to introspective writings, the journals contain Emerson's observations on his reading, on his country, especially during the presidential campaign of 1840, on Slavery' on art and nature, on religion and the need for a new understanding of its meaning, and on love. His relations with such close friends as Bronson Alcott and Margaret Fuller also are reflected here, as are his developing friendships with Thoreau, Jones Very, Samuel Ward, Caroline Sturgis, and William Ellery Charming, the poet.

During this period he gave three series of lectures and published his second book, Essays, which contains some of his greatest work-"Self Reliance," "Compensation," and "The Over-Soul." The major workshop for Essays, these journals are indispensable for the study of Emerson's creative processes. Many entries are published here for the first time, including experimental lists of topics for Essays and possibly the earliest draft of the poem "The Sphinx."

For Emerson, the journal was one of the most important of literary genres. His own journals not only formed his "artificial memory," but became "a living part of him." He later wrote, "The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression."

5-0 out of 5 stars One anthology among the many - but nonetheless Emerson
Whether 'Modern Literary ' or 'Bantam' or 'Norton' or even the 'Collected Works' one comes to the essential thing which is the writingof Emerson himself.
There is almost always the selection from 'Nature' and 'The Harvard Divinity School Address'and selections of other 'Essays' and some of the poetryincluding the anthology pieces like 'Concord Hymn'and perhaps some of the diarywriting.
Emerson is along with Thoreau is the great American prose-poet, the one whose prose reads like poetry, and whose poetry often seems to run on likeprose. He is the master- metaphor- maker of a new American day and hero. Emerson stands for a certain kind of American hope and integrity, and a cosmic freedom embracing all the universe. If hegoes East it is also part of his going West, and surrounding the world with circles. Through his translucent 'eyeball' he sees America for what it is, and dreams its heroes' greatness.
Emerson uplifts and inspires and teaches- among others Thoreau and Whitman.
He is the American thinker who can contend with the best Europe has to offer.
In some sense all of American philosophy, including 'pragmatism' will come out of his work.
Whatever anthology he is read in, he opens mankind to a new conception of itself, and its distant destiny.

3-0 out of 5 stars How to make a good anthology bad
Despite its editors' best efforts, this is a very good Emerson anthology. All the most important texts are there, on Norton's customary thin onionskin paper, in a surprisingly compact volume, typeset nicely. The selection includes not just Nature and a handful of the best known of Emerson's First and Second Series of essays (though it would've been nice to include more of these central texts), but interesting early sermons and some of Emerson's late-career essays from Representative Men and The Conduct of Life. And there's also a scattering of wonderful lesser-known published pieces, addresses, letters, and unpublished journal material, clearly selected with an eye to fitting Emerson into his literary, historical, and political context. Some interesting critical work also fits in the back pages, pre-eminently Cornel West's extremely intelligent essay and an early piece of Stanley Cavell's (though readers might also be interested in Cavell's more recent collection of essays on Emerson), which you won't find in any other similar volume. (The self-inclusions by the volume's editors are best ignored.)

But the editors have done their best to render the volume unusable by peppering it densely with useless footnotes. They have chosen to use their footnotes as insults to the reader's intelligence rather than aids to his scholarship, intruding frequently and fussily to define slightly obscure words, to refer to other similar phrasings elsewhere in Emerson, to correct the author on the basis of twentieth-century science (!), or simply to harrumph and remind the reader of their presence. Of course, the occasional helpful note is scattered among this dross, illuminating a classical allusion or pointing to a contemporary (19th-century) context, so one is hard pressed simply to ignore them all.

This is a travesty of "student-centered" editing, and comes close to rendering the volume unreadable; fortunately, it doesn't quite succeed. Still, readers might prefer to look at the Library of America's Emerson volume, which lacks the uneven but sometimes excellent critical material but offers a more complete selection of texts than this one in a similarly elegant single volume, and is blessedly free of footnotes (though, in fact, it has helpful endnotes if you go looking for them). We can always find a dictionary if we need one...

4-0 out of 5 stars Emerson 5, Critics 0
This volume is an excellent compendium of Emerson's work.It contains material not available in the Library of America editions.Beware of the critical essays, though, particularly the contemporary ones. It's hard to tell from Cornel West's essay whether or not he's actually read Emerson, but if he has, he didn't like him much.So why write an essay appraising Emerson? It's the silly, empty-headed kind of academic noodling that makes academia irrelevant to modern life.

This begs the larger question: Why would anyone read ABOUT Emerson, when they could READ Emerson?Ignore the critics, commentators and wannabe's.READ EMERSON. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Idealist, Transcendentalist, Neoplatonist, Romantic, Mystic- American!
This is the International Collectors Library edition of RALPH WALDO EMERSON: ESSAYS AND JOURNALS. It is excerpted from THE JOURNALS OF RALPH WALDO EMERSON edited by his son E.W. Emerson and Waldo E. Forbes. The binding is maroon leatherette with gilt spine and cover.

The introduction by Lewis Mumford dates from 1968. Briefly, it perceptively makes the case that not only did Emerson help to break us free from intellectual bondage to Europe, but that the America he describes is not our current country, but an ideal that we are drifting farther and farther away from in the modern age.

His addresses "The American Scholar" and "Address to the Divinity Class" follow.

After these, both the first and second series of essays are included in their entirety.

From CONDUCT OF LIFE the selections "Power", Wealth", and "Culture" are included.

From ENGLISH TRAITS eleven chapters have been selected.

Other essays included are: "Domestic Life", "Plato", "Thoreau", and "Lincoln."

Finally, selected journal entries from 1820 to 1871 round out the volume.

"Great men, great nations, have not been boasters and buffoons, but percievers of the terror of life, and have manned themselves to face it." --Ralph Waldo Emerson ... Read more

Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf.Volume V features two collections from American poet and philosopher RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1803-1882): Essays-on such topics as "The American Scholar," "Self-Reliance," "Friendship," "Heroism," and more-and English Traits, in which he examines the British character as gathered from his travels in England. ... Product Description

The final volume of the Harvard edition presents the journals of Emerson's last years. In them, he reacts to the changing America of the post-Civil War years, commenting on Reconstruction, immigration, protectionism in trade, and the dangers of huge fortunes in few hands--as well as on baseball and the possibilities of air travel. His role as a Harvard Overseer evokes his thoughts on education during crucial years of reform in American universities.

His travels take him to Europe for the third time, and for the first time he encounters the new garden of California and the enigma of Egypt. He continues to lecture, and a second volume of poems and two more collections of essays, culled from his manuscripts, are published. Finally, his late journals show Emerson confronting his loss of creative vigor, husbanding his powers, and maintaining his equanimity in the face of decline.

This concluding volume thus gives a complex picture of Emerson in his last sixteen years, facing old age but still the advocate of "newness" throughout the world.

Product Description
Emerson traveled broadly in England and Scotland in 1833 and again on lecture tour fifteen years later. Drawing on his experiences there as well as his wide reading in British history, he set forth in English Traits his view of the English as a nation. Published in 1856, this was one of his most popular books, perhaps because of its playfulness and wit and clarity of style.

English Traits is a searching and distinctive portrayal of English culture that today offers a revealing perspective on American viewpoints and preoccupations in the mid-nineteenth century. It is notable, too, for revealing an interesting side of Emerson's complex character; here we find Emerson the practical Yankee, analyzing English power, resourcefulness, determination, and materialism.

The historical introduction to this fullscale critical edition, places English Traits in the context of Emerson's career and travels, and discusses the book's contemporary reception. The explanatory notes provide a treasury of helpful information. This is the definitive scholarly edition of English Traits.
