5-0 out of 5 stars Adaptations that would make Fleming proud
Octopussy, the short story by Ian Fleming is a great little story about James Bond paying a visit to a man who murdered one of his friends 20 years earlier and "taking care" of him. It's short, sweet, not too confusing and filled with Flemings trademark, quality writing. As a comic strip, which would normally focus on action, it should have been a disaster. This adaptation by James Lawrence and Yaroslav Horak is AMAZING.
They succeed by using the short story and embellishing it in ways that take nothing away from the original. They add a backstory that fleshes out the characters in great ways.
In the original story the murdered man was one of Bond's mentors, the man that taught him to ski among other things. In the comic version we meet his family and see that there was so much more to the man, and his relationship to 007. Action sequences are added where needed and true to Fleming's style, there are sexy moments.
As if that weren't enough, this volume also contains the story, THE HILDEBRAND RARITY, originally from the FOR YOUR EYES ONLY collection. Again, Lawrence and Horak take one of Fleming's thinner stories and flesh it out to a proper length and character. Again they succeed admirably.
These strips were published in the London Daily Telegraph between November of 1966 and December of 1967, but they feel as fresh today as they did 35 years ago. The stories and the art is timeless- both a tribute to Ian Fleming's work and that of Lawrence and Horak. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More stellar quality gems from Jim Lawrence & Yaroslav Horak
I have the original issue of this graphic novel that was published by Titan in the 80s. Comparing the print quality of that edition with this latest one, I see one major problem:

The print quality was excellent in the first edition, while this edition seems to have been printed using an ink-jet printer from computer scanned JPEG images. On close scrutiny, the lines of the drawings look clean and crisp in the older edition, while they look jagged (as if made up of computer graphic pixels) in the new edition. This is a problem that I see repeated in the entire series of re-issued Bond strips from Titan in the 2000's. One more problem I see in all the Titan Bond series is that the ink is alternately very dark and very light in alternate pages in Colonel Sun, TSWLM, OHMSS & Goldfinger. Very annoying.

That having been said, the paper quality, cover thickness and binding are excellent.

One piece of good news is that this edition of TSWLM now includes panel #721 which was omitted from the 1989 version, because Titan did not want to include an extra page for just one panel.

The stories themselves are excellent in every manner and drawn to realistic perfection by Larry Horak. Jim Lawrence's adaptation of the Fleming Material is superb as always.

The Titan Bond series is a must-have for Bond fans and comic book enthusiasts. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Graphic Novels I Love!
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is a wonderful graphic novel. If it was 100% full of Ian Fleming stories, it might warrant 5 stars. Still, it's a worthy purchase.

What's neat is, besides the original non-Fleming story, it does have one story based on the Bond author's original novel of the same name ("The Spy Who Loved Me"). Better yet, since the original was not really a Bondian adventure, the graphic novel brackets it with a very sensible new story that is very much about 007. Fleming's original remains in tact smack dab in the middle of the newer one. It's all done very well.

Too bad Ian Fleming didn't live to write many more Bond novels than he did. However, the ones he wrote were - smashing!

5-0 out of 5 stars FIRST TIME IN PRINT IN ALMOST 40 YEARS!
The Spy Who Loved Me ran from late 1967 to 1968 in strip format and is re-printed here for the very first time. One of the most popular Bond Girls, Caroline Munro provides the introduction to this volume which also includes the first post-Ian Fleming Bond strip, "The Harpies".

In the "Spy Who Love Me", a Canadian Test Pilot is the target of a blackmail scheme. He's demanded to turn over secrets about a new experiment test plane called the GhostHawk. If he refuses to cooperate, his blackmailers will turn over evidence to French law authorities linking him to the death of a woman.Bond is called to investigate. The pilot, Mike Farrar, admits he was there when the girl died, but that her death was an accident and he fled when he got scared.Bond's investigations lead him to believe that the terrorist group S.P.E.C.T.R.E. is behind the blackmail plot.

This story is a bit slower paced than other Bond stories and not as action oriented as some might like but as always the art by Yaroslav Horak is op notch and has that great, 60's spy look to it.The better story to me was "The Harpies" that had a spectacular plot more in tune with the Bond films.A brilliant Dr. Phineus develops a death ray but says it should be destroyed.A wealthy aeronautics industrialist named Nero kidnaps Phineus to obtain the ray.Bond goes undercover as the new chief of security in Nero's plant to rescue the doctor. This story was much more briskly paced with a great, megalomaniacal villain in Nero, beautiful women, and lots of action.

The Harpies is seeing print for the first time in almost 40 years, having originally run in British newspapers from October 1968 to June 1969.Writer Jim Lawrence here shows he's capable of working within Flemings framework, but also crafting an intriguing storyline.Horak provides the beautiful art once again. For those who have never read the Bond strips, these collections from Titan Books are wonderful and preserve what otherwise may have been completely forgotten.

4-0 out of 5 stars A faithful presentation of classic Ian Fleming storytelling
On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my personal favorite James Bond novel. The movie (On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition) adhered closely to the novel and this collection of daily comic strips likewise stays faithful to the most humanizing James Bond story. (You Only Live Twice included in this volume follows the novel, not the movie version). The artwork by John McLusky starkly captures the time period of the 1960s. The story is presented very straight-forwardly in classic three and two panel segments. Though this book cannot be equated to modern 'graphic novels', James Bond fans will appreciate seeing a familiar story in a different medium.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best novels- a GREAT Titan book!
Like the previous reviewer I had stumbled onto the other Titan releases in the late eighties- and loved them. Now Titan has resumed publishing these strips and I couldn't be happier. You can read my GOLDFINGER review on that page.

OHMSS has long been one of my favorite Bonds- novel and film! Now I can add comic strip to that category as well.

There are some "issues" because the comic strip version of THUNDERBALL had been cut short and the character of Bloefeld was never properly introduced.OHMSS hardly misses a beat without this information. This is a testimony to Henry Gammidge's adaptation skills.

John McLusky did a spectacular job with the art.I think he really hit his stride with GOLDFINGER, and only got better. The two adaptations in this volume are some of his best work ever! The material seems dated only in that it takes place in the late fifties. The artwork itself is modern and vital- or, if you prefer,it was advanced for it's time.

If you're wondering whether the strips are as good as the novels, I have to say they are- for what they are. Sure, they're comic strips but they're faithful adaptations of Flemings books with the language and sexuality toned down.

Titan is releasing CASINO ROYALE in June, and it appears to be 36 pages longer than the previous 1990 release. I suspect they will be including MOONRAKER in this volume.***Note-According to the Titan website it will still include only CASINO ROYALE and LIVE AND LET DIE.I'm not sure what all the extra pages will be!***

I say we try to get Titan to release all 20+ years of the James Bond Comic Strip in published form.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic volume - not one, but two Bond novels
I was very excited to hear that Titan was set to deliver even more editions of the James Bond strips that appeared in the pages of The Daily Express in the 1960s and even more pleased to hear that two of my favorite Fleming books - 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and 'You Only Live Twice' were set to appear in the same edition.
Some years ago, back in the 1980s I had picked up a previous edition of 'Octopussy' that Titan had put together and promptly devoured the book and for years later had wished and wanted to see the rest of the series. Here at last some two decades later I am getting my chance - and am extremely happy about it.
Not only do we get the comic-strip adaptation of the above two books in this one edition, but we also get an introduction by Bond actor George Lazenby (who played the character in the 1969 movie) as well as a discussion of the Fleming books (from 'Doctor No' to 'For Your Eyes Only') and before the beginning of both novels a brief discussion on the background behind the comic-strips and even mention of where the strip deviates from the book which it is adapting.
A word of warning must go out to those who only know the secret agents exploits through the popular series of EON Productions movies. These strips are based on the Fleming novels which are very different from the 007 movies (at least since 1971 onwards). In fact one of the novels adapted here - 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' may be the Fleming novel most faithfully adapted for the movie screens.
Titan Books deserve a great deal of credit for publishing these editions and this one will undoubtedly (and justifiably) become a proud addition to the bookshelves of every self respecting fan of the novels of Ian Fleming and in particular of his most famous creation - James Bond. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Richly Textured Novel and Period Piece
This is not only Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel but one of his best. It is richly textured, well written, clearly defines the Bond character and has survived not only as good literature but as a great period piece of the 50s. It also gives us a glimpse of the often unseen smoke filled cocktailed night life found in Europe's plush casinos of that era. Clearly, James Bond is a worldly character that lives and breaths in this unseen world described by Ian Fleming in this novel. James Bond can easily adapt to any locale or situation, size it up and endure. He is both innovative and resourceful and he must rely on his talents and instincts to survive. This is a very good Bond novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starter
This was probably one of the best Ian Fleming James Bond novels I have read. It is also one of the most violent and saddist. But none the less, this book was an excellent beginning to the James Bond series. It has itall. A barrack (card game) duel, a thrilling car chase, and a torturesecene. It can't get much better than this. Here in this book, you'll meetone of Bond's most deadlist enemies, SMERSH or 'Death to Spies.' I onlywish we could see more books like these, but Ian Fleming is gone and onlythe follow-ups will remain. But in a way he still lives on: in the books,in the movies, and in the way he shaped our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Bond!
Ian Fleming, obviously, is an excellent spy novelist and Casino Royal is an excellent spy novel! Fleming has the unique ability, through thick, vivid, atmospheric prose,of placing the reader in the middle of the action. In one scene the reader is sweating right along with Bond as he is on the losing end of a high stakes game of Baccarat. It is easy to smell the smoke and feel the tension as Bond desperately maintains his cool. There is also an interesting love interest where Fleming, with great verbage, shows the softer and vulnerable side of Bond.Unfortunately, the girl, in an incredible ending, perhaps, reinforces Bond's cynicism and contempt for the opposition seen in later novels. A great read. Couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing novel to be read by Post-War British
This is about as controversial as James Bond gets. The original Moonraker novel is a deep and meaningfull novel, bringing in a strongly racial background, a story of intrigue in the wake of the second world war. Hugo Drax, a multi-millionaire gentleman, 'the Coloumbite King', is slowly building the formidible Moonraker missle that will bring the world to its knees. England has hailed this escaped soldier a national treasure, a man who will soon be the saviour of Britain.
But there is only one problem.
Hugo Drax cheats at cards.
M., the head of the elite double-o section of the secret service, has watched him cheat at Blades, the exclusive gentlemans club to which they are both members, many time, and has mentioned it to Basildon, the owner of Blades many a time. With nothing else to do on his own to help a national hero avoid much embarassment, he enlists the help of James Bond, agent double-o-seven, whom he has worked with twice before.
In the comfort of Blades, Bond doctors his cards before M, himself, Drax and drax's friend Meyer, begin their game of bridge. After Bond wins 15,000 pounds of Drax's money, he storms out, furiously muttering, 'Spend it quickly'.
Bond walks into the secret service building in Regents Park to find two of Drax's men, a scientist on the Moonraker, and a Policeman sent to the launchsite by Scotland Yard, have been killed in a murder-suicide, whereby the scientists last words before he lodged the gun in his throat were 'Heil Hitler'.

Bond travels to the Moonraker Launch-site beside the cliffs of Dover, and finds Drax, Gala Brand, a stiff policewoman, and Krebs, Drax's suspect 'aide-de-campe'.
But something is wrong in Dover.
The test of the Moonraker missle is in three days, and Bond must find out what it is before the main population of Britain is obliterated. And he must watch out for Drax, a man who will stop at nothing to fulfill his hate-filled fantasies of mass-murder and bloodshed.
An intriguing novel that will have your pulse up twenty, Moonraker is a tale you must read up to the last page:
for healths sake

4-0 out of 5 stars The Roger Moore film does this Novel No Justice
This novel is my first real Ian Fleming novel. It has an elaborate plot invloving a scheme to seek vengence for the defeat of Germany in WWII.Sir Hugo Drax is a British nobleman with a mysterious past and fortune.Heoffers the British a nuclear super-rocket: the Moonraker.Suddenly, anMI-5 agent is murdere by a German scientist in a murder/suicide.AfterBond stops Drax in a card game at M's private club, M recommends Bond asMI-5's replacement. His trainig is for overseas operations, but he reportsto Drax's compound. The leading lady is Gala Brand, from the Ministry ofSupply, who Bond never seduces(surprise!).Bond and Gala uncover a plot todestroy London.Unlike the movie, Bond never leaves England. The one staris deducted since the card game is too long.Overall, a fantastic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moonraker is pure brilliance.
Through James Bond's many adventures he has had to deal with men who are obsessed with world domination and destruction. But in Moonraker Ian Fleming creates an amazingly real picture of a classic villain, not bent onworld domination, who uses his intelligence to succeed. Although Hugo Draxis completely unbelievable Fleming's description's make him and his storyof revenge on Great Britain come alive. In some of the most exciting andgripping scenes of all of Bond's adventures we seem to get to know Bond andhis detective work better. Another reason that this book was soentertaining was the fact that the Bond girl, Gala Brand, was evendifferent. Gala never really fell madly in love with Bond but all the whileshe kept her appeal and she is probably the most useful and most appealingof all the Bond girls. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to the creator of 007
Until the publication of Lycett's Ian Fleming, this John Pearson biography was the most definitive biography of Ian Fleming available. It is unfortunate that Pearson knew Fleming personally and whitewashed aspects of Fleming's life, because this book remains by far the most readable work available on Fleming.

Fleming's life was actually quite boring.Another Amazon reviewer is accurate when he says that Fleming was too involved with womanizing and high living to have led a really interesting life. Most of the facts are to do with betrayals, failures in business, law-suits, and other tedious matters. So Pearson arranged his book partly chronologically, but also partly thematically, in order to show how Fleming's life influenced the content of the James Bond novels. This is a good writing strategy, and Pearson manages to make a pretty humdrum life of desk journalism, gin and golf seem interesting. From the perspective of readability, this book is head and shoulders above the Lycett biography.

What you miss in Pearson are the less savory aspects of Fleming's life. For example, in his chapter called "Marriage," Pearson makes it appear as though Fleming and his wife were old friends who fell in love when Fleming comforted her after she had surgery and who eventually were drawn together despite his wife's marriage to another man, Rothermere. In fact, as we learn from Lycett, Fleming's wife was carrying on all along with both Fleming and Rothermere even while previously married to a third man, and Fleming's marriage had more to do with an illegitimate pregnancy. However, Pearson doesn't lie, he just draw's the reader's attention away by jumbling timelines. It is entirely possible to read this biography without getting a "wrong" picture of Fleming's life.

In fact, Pearson does a much better job than Lycett of giving an impression of the total personality. My sense is that Fleming had many things in common with those who have Attention Deficit Disorder, but this is much more clear in Pearson.By highlighting themes such as the importance to Fleming of establishing routine in his life, Pearson gets much closer to revealing a whole person, rather than the simple alcoholic sadist that Lycett writes about.

On the whole, I feel this is an excellent introduction to Ian Fleming for James Bond 007 fans. And for those who aren't 007 fans, why would you want to read about Ian Fleming? This 1967 paperback edition of Pearson's book has very small print very close to the margins and contains no photographs.A current reprint of the book is now available in hardcover, called The Life of Ian Fleming, but I don't know if it may have been revised. ... Product Description
A novel of the espionage adventures of Ian FlemingThe world knows Ian Fleming best as the creator of that international sensation, James Bond, hero of countless novels and films. The real Ian Fleming was once an operative for British Naval Intelligence, ostensibly retired to a career in journalism after World War II. Rumors have long swirled that Fleming never completely left the spy game . . . .Quinn Fawcett brings the fictional Ian Fleming and the early Cold War to new life in Death to Spies. As tightly written as a Le Carr novel, Death to Spies showcases the flair for imaginative inventions, sophisticated banter, and sex appeal that marked Flemings own fiction. It is the time of Philby, Burgess, and Maclean, a time when British Intelligence didnt know whom to trust. As an outsider, retired to Jamaica, Ian Fleming might be able to discover who is stealing nuclear secrets from the US and selling them to Stalins Russia and an unknown buyer who might be even more dangerous. As Fleming investigates in a hostile Los Alamos and meets a glamorous, available woman, he imagines the technology that would make his job easierpowerful listening devices, pens that conceal cameras, and other gadgets familiar to fans of James Bond. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars view of Death to Spies
what a wonderful title for a book.and the cover art or photo make a book sale easier. butthe hand holding a gun can't be seen well. and the small design at the start of each chapter very good.now to the story.which i find as boring as an old British movie.adventure NO.each character got worst as the story moved a long.i see why i had over look trying Quinn Fawcett books before now.and i'm very sorry i took the time to buy the set of Fleming stories,he has done.i hope the next will be some true format of a story.and at the last chapter he spoke of THE 39 STEPS.a book i just completed before this one.a truly wonderful book to read.but this was spoken as in a Hitchcock film.I think DEATH TO SPIES was very poorly done.and forgettable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming period thriller
Being a bigger fan of Ian Fleming's Bond novels than EON's Bond films, I found this book to have the same sense of period wonder and naiveté that the Bond books have with much of the same travelogue quality that, after reading a chapter or two, makes me feel like I've actually been somewhere else.As one customer remarked, this book feels much like a Bond in that the authors have duplicated the Fleming sweep, moving the plot along very quickly and the attention to detail is very effective but unlike the Bond books, Ian Fleming is a very believable character living in a very believable world. There are no outlandish villains, grueling torture scenes or science fiction elements to be found here.Fleming is very much a man of his wits, not of his fists. While bad and dangerous things do happen, they are the kind of harrowing things that happen in real life. The action is to real life scale, not epic scale. This might account for the disappointed quality of some other Bond fan's review of this book.

This isn't just a redress of the Bond character. Ian Fleming is, as he probably was, a charming, chain smoking, alcoholic member of England's elite upper class, enjoying the high life in Jamaica while most of England was still suffering an economic and spiritual depression after World War 2.More refined than James Bond, Quinn Fawcett's Ian Fleming is an enjoyable character through which to see the world the way it used to be.Or rather, how it might have been for those few lucky enough and wealthy enough to be able to build winter homes in the tropics to escape the chilling winters in England.

Like the Bond novels, texture, mood and ambience account for a lot of this book's appeal. The descriptions of food might very well make you hungry and the reader gets a strong sense of what it might have been like for Ian Fleming escaping to Goldeneye every winter.

Unlike the Bond novels, there are times when it feels a bit like Ian Fleming is eating and drinking his way through to a not entirely suspenseful conclusion. In fact, this book reminded me a bit of the Cohn Brothers film Fargo in this way ("It's a Radisson!").Not a bad thing, just not the kind of thing that keeps you turning the pages way past bedtime. The journey in this book is the worthier part than the destination.

Still, if you like the Bond books and don't expect to find James Bond trussed up like Ian Fleming, you'll probably enjoy this book.I certainly did, though it was a slightly lower octane, gentler kind of thriller written with much of the same charm and style of the Bond books.

Chin-chin.

2-0 out of 5 stars Death to Red Herring!
Under a title alluding to Soviet counterintelligence (Smert' Shpionam), this thriller substitutes a shadowy megalomaniac. At the climax, our hero battles a henchman instead of the villain, leaving subplots and characters unresolved.

3-0 out of 5 stars Faux James Bond
Written in the style of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, this brief exercise follows an imaginary Ian Fleming, intelligence agent, as he is forced to leave his home in Jamaica and travel about posing as a journalist trying to find what sort of nasty business has a rogue British agent killing people. In keeping with the style of the Bond books, the author has to spend considerable time describing what his characters wear, eat, drink, smoke, drive, etc. as Fleming and his stalwart pals end up trying to ward off attempts on Fleming's own life.Casting Ian Fleming as the hero here was obviously inspired by the fact that the real Fleming was involved with British intelligence operations at one time. The book is a pleasant and easy read, but the stilted dialogue and rather naive characters are not as much fun in today's world as they were when the Bond series first appeared. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun
Written news-paper style. Good pictures, fun humor. Super for ages 10 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical History
This book is part of a fabulous series that puts ancient history in an entirely different perspective -- it is written like a modern newspaper, only presented as though it is written during the time of ancient Greece (or Rome, Egypt, etc.)

Though the humor is lively and intelligent (great inside jokes for serious history students), the humor is never at the expense of historical accuracy -- these books are actually good background material for the study of ancient cultures. If you are fond of Ancient Greece, you MUST read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Funny
I bought mine and a school book fair,(The price here is much better) It tells of all sorts of things that happened in Greece years back, I also recomend the rest in the series, including The Roman Record, and TheEgyptian Echo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, funny, informative source on Ancient Greece.
This is going to be a "must have" book for any kid, teacher, or parentwho is interested in Ancient Greece.Whether you have a little background or have studied the subject extensively, you will find something to interest you--or at least to tickle your funny bone.(The inside jokes are hysterical.)Though too short to be a definitive source book, this will be a great supplement for anyone looking to study Greek history. ... Product Description
This book celebrates the greatest of all postwar British fictional icons. For too long the Bond films have overshadowed their literary source - the bizarre, baroque world of Ian Fleming. Full rein is given in this anthology to Fleming's wonderful creations - the deranged villains, their horrifying associates and their surreal lairs; from Dr. No's guano island to Blofeld's Garden of Death. Full attention to is paid to the girls, cars, food, drink and cigarettes consumed by the books' brutal, resourceful hero. From the first Bond novel, "Casino Royale" to the last to be fully finished, "You Only Live Twice", there is an extraordinary zest and ingenuity to Fleming's imagination and "My Name's Bond..." allows readers to see perhaps as never before the author's remarkable abilities. He was, above all, a creator of great set pieces and it is these that are surely at the root of the films' great and lasting success. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally unnecessary, thoroughly disposable
I was quite displeased with this book. Please, save your money, it's not worth it at all. All it does is to quote from all 14 Fleming's amazing novels, so you would be much better off reading the original novels than reading this book.
This book, by no means, will add to knowledge regarding Bond universe, so, if you want to know more about James Bond, if you are really interested in getting deeper into it, and know more about both the literary and the screen hero, buy JAMES BOND - THE LEGACY, written by Bruce Scivalli, the same one who's responsible in putting the extras on the DVDs together. Legacy is supperbly written, a true jewel, it encompass every aspect of the 20 pictures and more, much more.
I gave one star just because I wasn't able to give zero. ... Read more
