2-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of Robert Forward. . .
. . .really I am -- but in this book, Forward concentrates almost exclusively on what is the weakest element of his writing -- character development -- and neglects the strongest element of his writing -- serious "hard-science" fiction.

I've admitted in other reviews (see "Saturn Rukh") that I don't read Forward for character development or depth.Good thing too!The by-play between the twin brothers in this novel is unbelievable at best; the transformation from General to religious dictator is ridiculous; and the alien robots which suddenly turn up to save the day?Come on, guys!

Dr. Forward -- PLEASE keep writing your "hard science".It's wonderful and thought-provoking in its own right. But forgive me for negative rating here. The downsides of "Martian Rainbow" far outweighed the upside.

3-0 out of 5 stars Characters are not believable...
The books foundation lies in the similarities and differences of the two main characters, Alex the General und Gus the Scientist. The other point to start from is the effort to make Mars aplanet to live on. Both plots are being treated too black and white (the schism between Alex and Gus and how they are drifting more and more apart is not handled well) or solved with a deus-ex-machina solution. The plot itself could have been made into a complete trilogy (Step 1: Conquer Mars, Step 2: Build Mars, Step 3: Save Earth...) with enough emphasis on the different characters.

On the positive side: I was captured by the principles of making Mars a habitable planet. This kind of situation suits well with Robert Forward, only his characters are not believable, and therefore not interesting enough to bring life into this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good beach read but not his best work
This book was good but not great. The Mars angle is very interesting and his science is terrific as always. His characterization and plotting wereon the thin side.If you like Forward's other books you will like thisone, although Dragon's Egg/Starquake and the Rocheworld series are moreinteresting in terms of both their science and plot/character developmentin my opinion.Maybe that's because the other books include alien races, which Forward seems to do better than human characters. ... Product Description
This book describes how to make, capture, store, and use antimatter. It is the answer to the skeptics who say that using antimatter is too risky, too difficult, or too expensive. Explains, step-by-step, how to greatly improve the cost-effectiveness of antimatter production, how antimatter can be used in power stations, and how it can improve the propulsion of interplanetary rocket engines by one or two orders of magnitude. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A plan for anti-matter mass production
The author proposes very realistic ways to achieve the mass production of anti-matter, and shows that the mass ratios involved with any other propellant cannot possibly be used for long distance space travel. The author proposes several types of anti-matter rocket engines that would undoubtedly produce very fast space travel, but others -- most notably Andrew Bender in his book entitled, "SlipString Drive" -- have proposed other concepts that may take us beyond the speed of light using anti-matter. I would recommend reading "Mirror Matter" first, followed by "SlipString Drive".

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book to Get Interest about Anti Matter
This Book is a Book, where we can learn about the History of Anti Matter. Also it creates Interest to Research on Anti Matter. As we know Anti Matter is the Future Energy Source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matter Versus Anti-Matter
An intriguing concept that authors Forward and Davis have written in terms that a lay person can understand.Star Trek captured the imagination of millions of viewers and now they can find out what made
Star Trek tick with space propulsion. I highly recommend this book. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it.
One of the better ones in the series.Complete with births, deaths, tidal waves, lava flows, specs on 2 new spaceship designs, a new alien race, learning to communicate with said race, and dealing with rescue/replacement after a long enough time for your kids to have kids.We even get a couple of chapters from the flowen perspective and another couple from the new alien perspective.Sounds packed? It is, but it wraps it all up well with a look at how humans might start using a whole new solar system. ...
