Inside Anne Franks House
I was absolutely thrilled when I received this book. It is very well Illustrated and very well made not your average book. There are picture's that I've never seen of Anne Frank and that was a great surprise. Get this book you won't be disappointed.

This book takes readers on a memorable tour of 263 Prinsengracht and Anne's world
I have loved Anne Frank since I first read her diary as a 10-year-old almost thirty years ago. Someday, I hope to make the trip to the Netherlands and visit the place that served as her hiding place during those dark years of the Holocaust. Till then, this book serves as a reasonable substitute - readers get to take the same tour that visitors take on a physical tour of the house. Excerpts from the diary that are found in the house are also included, together with background information by Otto Frank (Anne's father), the museum directors, etc. There is also information pertaining to the diary and its publication.

The highlight of this book (for me) were the hundreds of archival photographs of Anne, her family, and friends in various settings, and of course of the Annex itself. Many are in black and white and there are some color photographs as well. The photographs are labeled in small text, though it's a pity that some appear to be erroneously labeled. The photographs paint a vivid portrait of Anne's history and life and made me weep for the tragedy of it all. This is a must have for anyone who is interested in the history of Anne Frank, her diary and the Holocaust. I would also recommend the following:

I visited Anne Frank's huis in Amsterdam. This book not only brought me back there, but allowed me to digest the details of what they illustrated. Very moving! A topic people all over the world mustn't forget.

While the book followed the tour of the house, there are areas of the book that seem to have a weak translation into English. I wanted to absorb every written word, but there were areas that were not very clear. But I wouldn't give up the book for that. Thank you Ms Westra! And Thank you Mr. Frank for sharing the story of your precious little girl. I'm sure you are with her now.

Great book, but watch out -- it's got two titles!

It's a beautiful book, well made and with many, many large photos, and I heartily recommend it. But it's not so beautiful as to warrant inadvertantly buying two, like I did. ;)

Great for kids 8 to 11
This is a great book for kids who are a little young for the actual story written by Anne Frank herself. My daughter is nine and she really liked it. Although it is faithful to the true story it avoids some of the heartwrenching detail that children in the 8-11 age group may not be ready for. We purchased it because my daughter had to read a book about a person who really lived for her reading log. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book.

A great picture book to introduce the harrowing topic of the Holocaust to young children
My interest in the Holocaust began when I was a history major in college and continued through the years of my teaching the subject in school. I was wondering how [and if] I should introduce thisharrowing subject to my almost 5 year old. I decided that it is never too early to teach the concept of tolerance and when I came across this book at the museum store in the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., I realized I had found the perfect book.

This is a picture book, targeted at ages 4-8, but I feel it can be used up to grade 6. The writing is simple, but effectively captures the trials and amazing courage of Anne Frank, who was forced to go into hiding with her family in a Secret Annex to evade capture by the Nazis during the Nazi occupation of Holland in WW II. The text is easy to read, and perfect not only for reading aloud, but also for young readers keen to discover more about this dark period in history. Parents and teachers can utilize this book in many ways to teach the concept of tolerance and also the power of courage, even in young children.

The illustrations effectively capture the essence of Anne Frank's story. I first read The Diary of Anne Frank as a 10-year-old, and still have that dog-eared copy in my home library, having read it many times since. "A Picture Book of Anne Frank" makes Anne's story accessible to younger readers and also for more mature preschoolers. As a side note, I highly recommend a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C. - there is an exhibit titled "Daniel's Story" which traces the poignant journey of a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust. It is perfect for children ages 7 and up [it's not too graphic], and contains many objects of the period which hold visual appeal for both children and adults. As for "A Picture Book of Anne Frank", it's a must-have for those keen to explore the topic with their children.

A great explanation of a difficult period in world history!
As a mother and history major, I knew the story of Anne Frank well from books I had read and movies made about the topic.I was concerned about introducing this subject to my nine year old son.He can't understand this hatred for certain groups of people.I thought this was a very good telling of a well known story.It was told in terms that a child could understand.Bravo, David Adler- keep writing great stories- we have about all the books in the Picture book series- my son just soaks them up!

Beautiful
I loved it. The story is told in clear, simple language that makes it easy for children to understand (Crucial in a book geared for a younger crowd) and the illustrations are breathtaking and accurate.

A wonderful introduction to Anne Frank.

Simple and touching
This book is Simple and touching. Its very simple to read but goes into the depths of her short and in the end devastating life. She had a simple life and she loved it but the last and dark days that she spent in the secret annexe.

iT turns out that Otto Frank was the only one to survive out of all the secret annex (peter wasn't heard from) everyone else died. If only she had survived the last couple of weeks then she would be free once more.

As a sixth grader I really enjoyed the book Anne Frank. The story was about Anne Frank,A brave young Jewish girl about 12 years old and her fourting year old sister.She found out at age 14 years old that she had to put a lot of cloths on. She had to hide in the attic for three years so the Nazis would not find them. It took place in Germany where her family lived. She once lived in a house,If she went toschool she would be shot. The Nazis burnt all the Jewish books and pictures. A lot of children hid so they would not be shot because the people that hid them or they would be shot with no questions asked. The only person who survived was her dad, and the reasonher mom died first, and Anne and her sister died after. I think the person who reads the book would cry or be really interesting in it. While Anne Frank: Young Diarist breaks no new ground, the short overview of Anne's life is accurate and quite comprehensive. There are just a few revelations, even for those steeped in Anne Frank lore. The book should not supplant (chiefly) middle school readers of Anne's diary itself, but the overview would be a good recap for, say, tenth graders whose view of Anne and her times is a bit fuzzy. ... Great BOOK! Worth the Read!!
I LOVE this book! It instantly became one of my favorites. Just knowing how much work Ms. Muller put into it makes me love it even more.

A touching story of a young girl's life
Anne Frank's life and history of the Holocaust has always interested me. In this book, it took you through a journey of the wonderful way life used to be for this young girl and the tragic ending that awaited her. Although this was a very factual and informative novel, at times I got very bored of reading it. It takes alot of valuable time and patience to get through a book such as this. But other than that, I found it to be very interesting and the horrors of the Holocaust that most people don't know about touched me deeply. The way that Anne Frank and her family had been in hideout for 2 years,then when she was finally so happy to see the outdoors again, but lost her life due to the carelessness and small-hearted Nazis.

I would recommended this book anyone who wants to know very detailed facts of Anne's life. It gets boring at times but also exciting and makes you want to keep turning the pages. This novel took me quite some time to read because it usually bored me. So if you have patience, it's not a waste of time to read.

Although I have always been interested in Anne Frank's life, and have read her actual diary.. This book didn't do anything for me. It was nice having background of her life before she went into hiding, and also live's of other people in her life and her friends. But I found it kind of boring, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Even though it takes a lot of skill to write a long book such of this of a biography, I was disappointed.

This biography of her life is more confusing than interesting. And more boring than captivating. Even though many people would consider this a great book and full of facts, I was bored with it. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who wantst to learn about Anne Frank's life. I think you should read another book of her life, and don't waste anytime reading this book.

This book is wonderful!It provides information not only on Anne Frank herself but on Otto Frank's buisness, along with their family members.I would reccomend reading her diary first, before reading this book.I would reccomend it for anyone who wants to know more about Anne Frank!

Excellent biography for young adult level
Many of my own impressions correspond to those in the Amazon capsule review, and I shall not repeat these. Older readers may not find the manner of writing to be especially appealing, because the presentation is very much in the 'young adult book' manner of expression. As well, those of us who have previously studied Anne Frank may find little that is truly original here. It nonetheless is a superb biography for young adult use, and should be very enlightening to those of any age who know Anne only from her diary.

The author is frank and detailed about Anne's recollections and those of the people who knew her and her family, and there are many contributions from those in the latter group. She also is sensitive and insightful regarding factors in the diary which may be troubling, such as in outlining the circumstances which would have coloured Anne's highly negative comments about her mother and Mr Pfeffer. It is a well balanced presentation. The treatment of, for example, how the enforced, constant isolation, at the very age when one normally expands one's life beyond one's family, could have sparked Anne's strong irritation is accurate and delicate, and could be helpful to those who wish to use the book in a classroom. ... Should be read!
The Diary of Anne Frank is one of those books many people read in school.For reasons I don't remember I was not one of them. I stumbled on this version and decided it was time.

Overall this is an excellent compendium of the 3 versions of the diary.The first 175 pages give you the history of the Frank Family, how they were arrested and suspects for betrayal. It also delves into the challenges of Fraud that has been lodged against the diaries.The author shows how these claims are baseless and the gives you the process used to debunk the claims.

This is not a simple read.This book is more for the scholar then the casual reader. Especially when faced with up to three versions of each passage in the diaries.The casual reader will probably find themselves skipping the other passages.

My wife said there were versions that painted Anne as a Saint and I did not see that in this edition. I saw the average teenage girl with the usual complaints about family and the horrible times she found herself in. Yet, she managed to find herself infatuated with boys and tried to outlast the fate that would happen to her.

This is a book all should read especially when considering it has been banned a few times.

I am going to tell you about the best book I have ever read. The best book I have read is
The Diary of Anne Frank. It is about a little girl that is Jewish. It takes place in 1945 during
World War II. It talks about them being scared of hearing a knock at the door. It talks about them getting sent to concentration camps and how the people get tortured there like in gas chambers that is were they stick you in a room air tight and fill the room with deadly gas fumes. They wood also cut all your hair off and tattoo a number on you.Most of the people would die because they would freeze to death because it was so cold. They were fed very little food and their beds had flies all around them and they would make you have a job like cleaning the bathrooms.So you can see people there were treated very badly. And all this happened because one man named Hitler wanted to do this all becausethe people where Jewish.These are just a few things why this is my favorite book. And I think that you should read this book too.

Anne Frank: An INTERESTING Person
I really didnt know much about Anne Frank and the Holocaust until my seventh grade year. But once i learned about it i developed an interest in it. It was a sad SAD thing to study but it is life which i want to learn more about and it is history which i love to study. Anne Frank was the most interesting person that i studied about in the Holocaust. Read the book and find out just how interesting she was!!!!

The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition is the best!
I love this book, because it make me understand that all three versions of the diary that know Anne wrote her original diaries,two notebooks and 324 loose sheet while she was hiding.

Anne did write alot about her friends, sexual feeelings, and fighting between her and her mother. The second one is missing,so she did finish the rewrite on loose sheet which is version B that the dated from December 7, 1942 to December 22, 1943. The last page of the rewrite on loose sheet on March 29,1994 about listening the radio broadcasting the Duth Exile from london that collected the daries and letters that people want to read then after the war. Anne did all the rewrite, but she never finished sadly, on August 4, 1944 the day of the arrest the nazi interupted her. She is a great writer of all times. I'm very obessed Anne Frank, because she is so smart!.

I love Anne Frank!
I'm glad someone decided to provide an uncensored version of Anne Frank's diary in English.This book contains English translations of three versions of Anne Frank's diaries, printed in such a way as to make it easier to compare them than if they had been printed back to back or in separate volumes.One version is Anne's fictionalized version.One is the, censored version as it was introduced to the Puritanical United States.The unabridged version is excellent, but not for prudes.Anne Frank was apparently bisexual, as well as a young woman of great intellect, insight and literary talent!I was amazed at how well I was able to relate to her, even though she was of another gender, born into a different race, raised on a different continent (Europe), about a quarter of a century before me!Thanks to this book, I fell in love with her! ... What might have been
The fate of Anne Frank and the people who hid with her and her family are well known.Of the eight people in hiding, only Otto Frank, Anne's father, survived the Holocaust.For many years, however, the fate of Peter, the son of Mr. And Mrs. van Daan, was lost.Historians have now found records that indicate that Peter died at Mauthausen-Gusen in 1945.When author Ellen Feldman visited the Anne Frank Huis in Amsterdam, Holland, the curator did not know this and informed Ms. Feldman that Peter's fate was unknown.This led Feldman to write The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank, a beautifully written story about what Peter van Daan might have done with his life if he survived.Using Anne's diary as a starting point (where she wrote that Peter told her that if he survived he would re-invent himself and nobody would know who he was), the book follows Peter as he immigrates to America, starts a family, and re-invents himself for his new, American life.Everything is going smoothly until Otto Frank publishes Anne's diary.Forced to confront his own past, which he has hidden from everyone, including his family, Peter suffers a breakdown.The story is ultimately about a man coming to terms with his past, and learning to move forward into his future.This book is beautifully written, and is sure to keep readers interested until the end.

The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank
While I do concede I usually find alternate universe fiction irritating, this one had an interesting premise that drew me in. What bothers me is what it failed to deliver. From the title, I expected the character to have been powerfully affected by his intimate and personal relationship with Anne, and for it to be discussed more. The character, however, spends more time talking about his solitary sexual experiences than the affection he supposededly shared with the girl in the title. Instead of being a story of lost love, it is a basic and general holocaust survivor story, and we already have plenty of those in fiction, and even more in non-fiction. I never once had the impression while reading the book that this Peter really loved Anne.

A Life Reimagined.
"To what extent do we remain obligated to the world even when we have been expelled from it?" - Men In Dark Times, by Hannah Arendt.

This quote, which opens up Chapter 10 of Ellen Feldman's novel, THE BOY WHO LOVED ANNE FRANK, puts forth the suggestion that those who have been made redundant or rejected by the world need not retain faith in it.This premise is firmly converse to Anne Frank's sentiment when she stated at the end of her own diary that she still loved life and the world.

Peter van Pels, whose family name was listed as van Daan in THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, allegedly stated to Anne while they were hiding in their Amsterdam attic annex during the height of WWII that if he got out alive he would reinvent himself entirely. What author Ellen Feldman has done with this ingenious novel is to imagine the life that Peter might have had post-WWII.There is no direct evidence that Peter perished in the Nazi death camps --- although this has been assumed by all who knew him, including Otto Frank --- so Feldman has taken this supposition and built a fictional life around it.

Peter van Daan is now living in America as Peter van Pels and passing himself off as Christian.Ironically, the first girl he falls in love with ultimately rejects him because she is Jewish and her family would not be pleased if she married outside of her faith.Funny enough, he begins dating her sister, Madeline, and she does not have an issue with his faith as their courtship eventually leads to marriage and a family.Peter finds employment in the growing field of Real Estate/Property Management and settles down to a nice suburban life in New Jersey.

However, Peter is continually haunted in his dreams by his secret and realizes the truth in the affirmation that you cannot run away from your past!In 1947, Peter's worst fears are realized as a novel is released worldwide titled ANNE FRANK: THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL (later re-titled to match the play/film, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK).Not only is Peter horrified that he will be exposed but his own wife and daughters become fans of the novel.Peter at one point steals the novel and travels a great distance to dispose of it --- only to sneak back out into the night to reclaim for himself.He reads the novel in secret, furiously turning the pages.While he disagrees with several portrayals within the novel he is moved by its' haunting passages that hit home for him.

Eventually, the play version of the novel becomes a big hit as THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK hits Broadway.Many people, including Anne's father, Otto Frank, object to the actress cast as Mrs. Frank who is a non-Jew.Peter has even more objection with Otto Frank who he feels watered down and tainted many passages of Anne's Diary.Specifically, he is not at all pleased with his father, Mr. van Daan, being portrayed as thief who stole bread from the cupboards at night, thereby depriving the rest of those in hiding from much needed nourishment.

Otto Frank chooses to bring the author of the play version of Anne's Diary, Meyer Levin, to court.Levin will later go on to pen the book, THE STOLEN LEGACY OF ANNE FRANK: MEYER LEVIN, LILLIAN HELLMAN AND THE STAGING OF THE DIARY, which continues to show contention with Otto Frank's editing of his daughter's original work.Peter is intrigued by this court case and sends a note to Otto Frank attesting to his true identity and listing his grievances with the edited version of The Diary.Mr. Frank's legal representative writes Peter back suggesting that his impersonation of someone that was dear to Mr. Frank was not appreciated and further correspondence will lead to legal action.

Peter shows up at the courtroom during the Otto Frank/Meyer Levin case and runs into an elderly woman who also has issue with Mr. Frank's edited Diary.This woman introduces herself to Peter as the wife of the character incorrectly named Pfeffer in both the Diary and the Play.Will Peter confront Otto Frank and thereby reveal his own secret to the world (and his family)?This question is answered in kind by Ellen Feldman and the result is seen in the novels final chapters.

Peter was under psychiatric care throughout his new life in America as he fought to deal with the secret he harbored.These scenes in the story are particularly poignant and reveal the inner battle Peter fights on a daily basis.Ellen Feldman's THE BOY WHO LOVED ANNE FRANK gives us an opportunity to imagine "what if" about one of the most beloved characters in modern non-fiction and allow the reader to travel along with Peter as he finds himself through his past.

What if Peter had Survived?
The premise of "The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank," is an intriguing one.What if Peter had survived the camps, emigrated to the United States and forged a new life for himself?

As imagined by Ellen Feldman, this is the starting point for the novel.What she does with it is skillful.Peter continually feels that he is well in control of his memories and is not in thrall to his past.As the pages fly by, however, you realize that he is slowly losing his grip on reality as Anne Frank's diary, then the play, and then the film, come along.By the time he begins to face his difficulties, the question becomes "is it too late?"

You don't have to be a Holocaust survivor to relate to the larger themes in this story.What kinds of deals do we make with ourselves to ensure that we seem "normal" to the rest of the world?Peter keeps saying "I am a reasonable man," as if saying it will make it true.He's trying to convince himself as well as the reader.This was a fascinating story, well-told, and it presented thoughtful issues that I will be contemplating for some time to come.

excellent alternate history
I've always enjoyed alternate history books but they normally deal with the large scale---what if the South had won the Civil War? If the Nazis had won WWII?"The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank" is an alternate history but only about the life of a man who wants to be anonymous and not claim his link to one of the most celebrated people of the 20th Century.

In real life, Peter van Pels and his parents spent over 2 years hiding with the Frank family and another man, Fritz Pfeffer, in "the secret annex" of Otto Frank's food sales business.Nazis find them on Aug. 4, 1944 and all 8 of them are sent to concentration camps.In the end, only Otto Frank survives.A few years after the war, he has the diary of his daughter, Anne, published and it becomes an international sensation, to this day one of the most widely read books in the world.Peter van Pels died in a concentration camp only days before it was liberated.

Ellen Feldman's book has Peter surviving the war and immigrating to America.He knows his parents have died in the camps and has no reason to change his name, but he does decide to deny being a Jew (something the real Peter had told Anne he would do should he survive the war).Van Pels marries a Jewish woman, has children and thrives as a businessman.

A few years later though Anne's diary is published and Peter is stricken with guilt over having survived the war while everyone else in the Annex died.He struggles with his denial of his Jewish past and takes issue with what he feels is the false portrayal of his family in the subsequent book and movie based on the diary.But since Anne had used pseudonyms for his family in the book, no one realizes that the book's Peter van Daan is really Peter van Pels.

I found this book to be very engrossing and I found Peter's struggle with his past and identity to be very powerful.In truth, he's still in hiding, hiding in plain sight perhaps, but still hiding.Only he knows the truth about himself but he keeps silent.Why?Does he resent the celebrity given Anne and her family?Is he ashamed that he was the only survivor?Is he a self-hating Jew?When he tries to finally claim his real past, he finds that few if any even believe him.

This is a book well worth reading but my only complaint is that the book never explores more the relationship between Peter and Anne.If you've read Anne's book then you know that at one point she was infatuated with him but that her feelings towards him had been cooling before the family was ultimately captured by the Nazis.But what really were Peter's feelings towards Anne?That was missing from this book and I feel it would've made the book even better.That being said, it is still a very well-written book and well worth reading.If you are like me and have tried to read everything you can about Anne Frank, this is required reading. ... Wrong genre--it's a play, not the book
Be aware this is the drama version of the book, not the book itself. I was ordering based on reviews, but did not know it was a play version until I received it. If you enlarge the cover it is visible, but no where in the description Amazon gives. Disappointed as I ordered two copies through private sellers!

Anne Frank
When I first read the story about Anne Frank, I was in 8th grade where every english teacher in my school had chosen to read this story to all of there students. I had no idea of what the story was going to be about and also had no idea who Anne Frank was. But after reading about her life, I had saw how hard it must have been for her.

This year in school we had to choose a book to read and do a book report on it. I had chosen to do Anne Frank because I had already read a little about her but I had wanted to learn more information about her and life for Jewish people during WW2. By reading both of this book it had shown me how hard it was for Jewish people of all ages. They where taken out of there homes and sent to a concentration camp where most of them later died. It puts the whole world to shame because we all knew about this and nothing was getting done early. But finally we were able to help them and save them.

It takes a brave little girl like Anne to be able to write everything down in a diary that was happening in her life. And by Mr. Frank giving Anne's book to be published must had taken a lot of courage also. But in many ways we are glad that he did because Anne had showed us in many ways how tough it was to be Jewish and how hard it was to go into hiding. I would recommend this book for people off all ages because it is a wonderful book, and I know everyone will enjoy reading it.

My first personal encounter with the horrors of world war II
Even though I was born during the war and grew up with the remembrance of it I was untouched by its reaality. When, at the age of 14,I first read Anne Frank's diary it was perhaps the most amazing encounter with the horrors perpetuated on millions but seen through the eyes of one person.

Her little diary gave the world a personal view and meaning to the millions who suffered the same fate.It will continue to be read and lets hope they will be young readers, caught in time to perceive it while their hearts and minds are still impressionable.It simply proves that life is a wonderful mystery.Anne Frank's diary and death were destined to touch the hearts and minds of millions.Her legacy written into history as a trivial, adolescent words scribbled in her little diary to transgress time.

A Sociologists investigation of Hidden Jewish Children
Diane Wolf conducted interviews with 70 Jewish people who survived World War Two by being hidden by Gentiles. I found the stories of the hidden children that are included in the book fascinating. The chapters where Ms. Wolf presents her findings I found generally less fascinating. Ms. Wolf does find that anti-semitism was pervasive in Holland, before, during and after the war. She holds this responsible for the deaths of what she estimates is the one third of hidden children who were betrayed. (Anne Frank and her family were betrayed by a Dutch neighbor.) The former hidden children report that the postwar period was more difficult than what they endured during the war. After the war the Dutch government established a body to decide the fate of these children. Some returned to their parents, some were kept by the people who had hid them, others were given to relatives or placed in orphanages. Many of the former hidden children report how wrenching it was to discover postwar that the people they thought were their parents were not, and found themselves entrusted to biological parents who were complete strangers to them. In many of the case histories Ms. Wolf reports that restoring the children to their biologic parents or relatives did not turn out well. Ms. Wolf's research has implications in the court cases of recent years where children who were placed at birth have been restored to biologic parents after years of court battles. Ms. Hunter's study shows that severing the bond between a young child and their maternal figure has devastating lifelong effects. Meloncoly touched my soul.
When I read this book all I could feel is tears coming to my eyes as I read the book of a life time.I think the saddest part was the end when they were all talk ing about how much they were going to enjoy life.But whiletheir thoughts were in heaven hell(The Nazies)Were donw stairs.

A true learning experience!
First of all, the author of this book, Hedda Rosner Kopf, is my aunt. And the "Other Holocaust Story" about Anna Gelbman is about my grandmother. Living in a jewish family which has grown with the realism of the holocaust I would have expected myself to know quite a bit about the events of the Holocaust. I am familar with The Diary of Anne Frank; the dairy itself, the play, etc.But, while reading this book I learned a lot about the holocaust that surprised me. Mostly, because I was not aware of it. The book is extremely well written, and a wonderful source of information about Anne Frank's life and the rest of the holocaust.It give facts and opinions, as well as allows you to question your own knowledge and beliefs about the Holocaust.It's a wonderful tool for anyone teaching the Diary of Anne Frank or a student doing a research project on the subject. I feel that it is a terrific book regardless of my relationship to the author.If you have an interest is the Holocaust, Anne Frank, or any other people in her situation like Zlata Filipovik who lived in Sarajevo (Zlata's Diary is an excellent book, too); you should definetly read this book. Thank you for your time.

In the 10/7/97 New Yorker, Cynthia Ozick's "Who Owns Anne Frank?" notes that the Anne Frank story has been "bowdlerized, distorted, transmuted, traduced, reduced; ... infantilized, Americanized, homogenized, sentimentalized; falsified, kitchified, and ... arrogantly denied."

This book "Understanding Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl" balances some of the distortions weighing on the Anne Frank industry by presenting sources, settings, and historical documents which should go a long way toward smartening-up the discourse with true facts. It deserves a ten on the Amazon.com scale for content, readability, and responsible creativity.

One of the most heartbreaking books

I am impressed that the author Carol Ann Lee has been interested in Anne Frank since she was 6-years-old.Carol Ann Lee has a unique ability to bring the Holocaust and the main character of Anne Frank to life.Carol Ann Lee has lived in Amsterdam, a town where portions of the Holocaust took place.Thus, she was probably able to thoroughly research and to visit the places where the holocaust took place.I have read some of Carol Ann Lee's other books and she is very good with descriptions of characters, settings and places.She also adds historical information about the Holocaust in the back of the book.Some of the things she adds are interesting statistics about the Jewish population before and after the war.Maps showing the areas where the Nazi's controlled Europe are also given along with locations of the death and concentration camps.All these references helped me to link together the chain of events occurring during the Holocaust.

This book includes references of the diary of Anne Frank.The areas which the diary does not include, Carol Ann Lee covers by putting it into her own diary as if she were Anne Frank hiding.Carol Ann Lee also talks about other children who lived during the Holocaust and whose lives were affected by the Holocaust.The mentally and physically abused were used as experiments or were put to death.In some cases the women that were mentally and physically wronged were deprived of having children because the Nazi's only wanted purebred healthy children.The anti-Nazi children were normally hidden or if discovered by the Nazi's were killed or died while working for the Nazi's.The Nazi children at the age of 14-years were enrolled in Nazi Youth.Nazi Youth is where they would learn what is wrong with the Jews.Anne Frank died three weeks before the allies liberated the death camp Auschwitz.Her father was the only family member that survived the Holocaust.Meip Gross is the woman who hid the Frank family for over two years and she found Anne's diary.She hoped that Anne Frank would still be alive so she could hand back the diary to Anne.Sadly Meip Gross was only able to hand back the diary to Anne's father Otto Frank.

This is one of the most heartbreaking books I have ever read because of what the Nazi's did to poor, innocent children.It is also interesting to see what actually happened during the Holocaust.You would definitely want to read this book because it is realistic.If you love history I would recommend that you read this book because it educates the reader about the Holocaust and Anne Frank.Carol Ann Lee makes this story come alive by detailed pictures and words.Dive into "Anne Frank and the Children of the Holocaust" and discover how fortunate we all are to live freely in a country.

An excellent choice for teachers
Unfortunately, so many students today get their entire knowledge about the Holocaust entirely from Anne Frank's diary.With this book by Carol Anne Lee, students will get some of the background necessary to understand this event in history as well as Anne's diary.

Using other materials to document the historical background and to give a different view of events that actually happened, gives a clearer picture of Anne and the events that occurred.The book does give a clearer picture of Margot than we get from Anne's book.This helps explain some of Anne's feelings towards her sister when the actual diary is read. This is not a substitute for Anne's diary; but a supplement to it.

If a teacher had to choose one book to use to teach about the Holocaust, this would be an excellent choice.

Nice Addition to Anne Frank Library
Carol Ann Lee has made a bit of a career writing books on Anne Frank and the Frank family.As someone who considers himself a bit of an amateur Anne Frank scholar himself, I can respect this.Fortunately, Ms. Lee is a very engaging writer and does an excellent job with her material.

This time around, Ms. Lee uses the story of Anne and her family as a way to delve a bit more deeply into the events of the Nazi era.She sketches out Anne's story again but she also writes more about the anti-Jewish laws, the experience of the occupied countries and the function of the transit camps, concentration camps and death camps.

She also reaches further outside of the Frank's experience to pull in diaries, memoirs and interviews from other young people who lived (and died) during this period.Anne's diary remains one of the most powerful written expressions to survive that time but the use of this other material adds a different flavor to the prose.In some ways, it deepens the impact to hear the experiences of others in counterpoint to Anne's.

Which brings me back to a question I often ask myself: why bother with these biographies of Anne when her diary is such a strong document?Ms. Lee answers that question well with this book.Scholars today can help fill in the gaps not covered in Anne's diary and add color to her experience by highlighting it with other documents from the time.When the resulting book is as well-written and user friendly as Ms. Lee's, it makes fine additional reading once Anne's diary has been experienced.

Anne Frank
Most people are familiar with Anne Frank's story, but in this book the author has added additional information about other children and teenagers who suffered during the Holocaust.
Lee does not shy away from the graphic details of everyday life in hiding, during the transports, and in the concentration camps. She describes the fear and horror of those times, but refrains from giving the reader more information than is age appropriate.
The bibliography is extensive, including standard Holocaust history books as well as interviews and unpublished memoirs. Sources of quotes are not always clear; a timeline and map would have been useful.
Literature for young adults often concludes with a hopeful note, in spite of overwhelming problems. A quote from Anne's diary ends this book: "I want to go on living, even after my death!" The author paints a picture of friendship, bravery, loyalty, and fortitude. She demonstrates why Anne's diary is a symbol of ultimate victory over evil.
Books like this will ensure that the one and a half million children who died in the Holocaust will not be forgotten. For those who question whether we need yet another book about Anne Frank, the answer is: decidedly yes.

Interesting and unique
This book is a unique perspective on the famous Anne Frank story. While definitely told within the Jewish context, we also get to see how gentiles experienced the war. Well written but not at all dry, we also get many interesting little details about the night the gestapo found the Annex.

Interesting Book
This book includes a very helpful, brief history of Holland and the other European countries before WWII, along with the rise of Nazism. Then the author relates the story of Victor Kugler, the hiding place for the Franks and a few others, the discovery of the Jews, the awful circumstances after Kugler's arrest, followed by his more ordinary life after that point.

Mr. Kugler was honored as a "Righteous Gentile," a non-Jewish person who risks his life in order to save the life of a Jew. This humble man never saw what he did for the Jews as being particularly heroic or outstanding. He was only doing what was morally right and helping his friends. Mr. Kugler is an example of many outstanding individuals who also courageously stepped up to the plate when duty called during this period of time.

I loved the way Mr. Kugler intelligently outwitted the Nazis and their collaborators not only before being caught, but also while living in the work camps. The unbelievable inhumanity Mr. Kugler described was only matched by the great sacrifices and the good deeds of those who fought against the evil as best they could.

In Appendix 3, I was struck with conviction while reading Irvin Naftolin's quotation of Elie Wiesel (and then his own comment):

"The opposite of love, education, law, is Indifference."

Victor Kugler, who helped to hide Anne Frank, was not indifferent.

A Story Everyone Should Read
I was 11 when I first read the story of Anne Frank. It was horrifying to think that a girl little older than me had to go through such hardship, and when I found out that she didn't survive, it struck an even deeper chord. It is because of Victor Kugler that the story of Anne Frank exists. I can't believe it has taken me 10 more years to discover his story, but I am glad that I was able to eventually read it.

The parts of this book that detail Kugler's life and gives us his own words are truly magnificent. I was disappointed to find that this wasn't the sole subject of the book. I did appreciate the historical context, because it helped me understand the atmosphere of Amsterdam and the Netherlands in general at the time of The Secret Annex. However, the information about various retellings of Anne Frank's stories is extensive and almost irrelevant (except when detailing Kugler's reactions to the adaptations).

The writing itself wasn't particularly interesting (it falls rather dry and flat), but the story is certainly one worth knowing about.

among the Righteous
Almost everyone knows the story of Anne Frank. Far fewer people know the story of one of the men who hid her and her family from the Gestapo for 2 years. The mere fact of having his story of bravery be told makes this book worthwhile.

Victor Kugler's story shines brightest when told in his own voice. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen very often. Large portions of the book are taken from the notes of Eda Shapiro, who interviewed Kugler late in his life. This is fine, as far as it goes, but Shapiro's words are also used to give us historical background information on topics such as WWII and the history of Jews in Holland. Surely a more authoritative source could have been found for these subjects.

At least this historical background is interesting. Not so the rest of the book's padding, including descriptions of various dramatic and musical productions of Anne Frank's story that Kugler attended and his reaction to them, and descriptions awards and honors that Kugler was given, including his inclusion among the Righteous Gentiles at Yad Vashem, all well-deserved. I could have lived with a lot less of this extraneous material, especially since Kugler's story stands so well on its own.

Another biography for those fascinated by the Anne Frank story
Of interest primarily to those who just want to know all they can about Anne Frank and the stories surrounding the family.It's not the best written book I have ever read, but it does satisfy the itch to know about some of the unsung heroes who tried to save the Frank family.

In the 1960's Eda Shapiro learned that the man who hid Anne Frank (and kept her father's spice business which supported them all going successfully) was alive and in Toronto.She did several intereviews with him. Upon her death, her husband looked for somebody to take her notes and work and publish them.Rick Kardonne finished organizing her material and added some background information and this book is the result.

Eda Shapiro comes across not so much as a biographer, but as the head of Kugler's fan club, which is understandable.Kugler himself was apparently a deeply humble, self-effacing man, who was not interested in flashy self publicity. This combination makes the story weaker in the telling than one could wish, but Kugler is still there to be discovered, revealing the depths and sincerity of his soul, a man to be admired.

Visitin Yad Vashem in the Avenue of Righteous Gentiles, Mr. Kugler stooped down and picked up a small leaf from 'his' tree.He wore that leaf in his lapel until the day he died.
