Product Description
Since its publication in 1990, Critical Terms for Literary Study has become a landmark introduction to the work of literary theory--giving tens of thousands of students an unparalleled encounter with what it means to do theory and criticism.Significantly expanded, this new edition features six new chapters that confront, in different ways, the growing understanding of literary works as cultural practices.

These six new chapters are "Popular Culture," "Diversity," "Imperialism/Nationalism," "Desire," "Ethics," and "Class," by John Fiske, Louis Menand, Seamus Deane, Judith Butler, Geoffrey Galt Harpham, and Daniel T. O'Hara, respectively. Each new essay adopts the approach that has won this book such widespread acclaim:each provides a concise history of a literary term, critically explores the issues and questions the term raises, and then puts theory into practice by showing the reading strategies the term permits.

Exploring the concepts that shape the way we read, the essays combine to provide an extraordinary introduction to the work of literature and literary study, as the nation's most distinguished scholars put the tools of critical practice vividly to use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, eventually.
My first encounter with this text was as an undergrad, and I, like a couple of other reviewers found it baffling, and I held it with disdain.Later, as a graduate student, I actually dropped a course because when I purchased my texts, this was one of them. Now, fifteen years later, with higher education degrees and ten years of teaching experience under my belt, I actually find the essays interesting because I can relate to several of the points. They are very deep theoretically, and often philosophical, and I certainly would not recommend this to anyone for a bit of light reading. However, I must finally admit that, for the proper audience, this text is quite useful and even enjoyable in the sense that it presents and discusses complex aspects and quandaries of not only literature, but life.Fifteen years ago, even the essays I could almost comprehend left me asking "who cares?" but now I look at them and say "how interesting!"

1-0 out of 5 stars Portentous Professors Unite!
If you are looking for an easy introduction to literary criticism, than look no further!!.... for a different book. This book is a collection of essays that are poorly written and constructed, have almost no point or conclusion and for the most part leave the reader thinking, "whaaa?".In almost ever essay they use very large ambiguous words and quote many authors but actually don't define the term they're given. They end up using poor examples to express a word they forgot to define in the trample of nonsense. All in all the title of the book should be Irony because it's written by english professors.

4-0 out of 5 stars From a teacher's perspective
While I agree that this is not a text that delves deep into the theories of Lacan or Derrida or Fish or any of the others, it is not intended to do so.I have found it to be an excellent tool for introducing my high school Advanced Placement students to the world of literary criticism.Certainly some of the articles can get wordy or bogged down in "technical" detail, but literary criticism has never been for the reader who wants to skim and get the assignment "over with."Any critical theory takes time and patience to work through; critical theory questions ideas and requires a commitment on the part of the reader to think, question, and engage with the text. There are some essays that younger students simply do not have the skills for yet but there are others that are quite accessible to them.In particular, my students found the essays on Representation, Structure, Race, and Canon very interesting.

This source has one significant advantage over many other texts. For each article, there is an immediate application of the technique to a well-known piece of literature.I know that my students reading of Appiah's essay on race dramatically impacted how they interpreted Shakespeare's play Othello and then later Schuyler's novel Black No More. While neither my students nor I always agree with what the critics are saying, I have found the book a great starting point for discussion.

4-0 out of 5 stars For either grads or happily confirmed nerds
I am impressed by this text, with one caveat. At my school it is used as a graduate level textbook and that is probably the appropriate level.

I am an undergrad and I enjoy this book immensely. I'm constantly finding explanations (finally!) for most of the indecipherable ideas embedded in the critical articles I have to use for literature papers. It's giving me the language to interrogate texts and making my reading experiences much more meaningful. This book gives me food for thought for days.

But if it's brain food, it's definitely health food, maybe even crunchy and vegan. There is some truth in the other reviewers' impression that the essays can come out on the pretentious side. This stuff is hard on the modern entertainment-loving brain, unless your brain is entertained by a challenge. I love this book, but I pace myself to about a chapter a month. Since there are 28 chapters, it's going to take me about 2 years to get through it!

The book it is an excellent compendium of complex ideas. The ideas are never cheated of their complexity and their originators are never given short shrift. It can be gotten through in a semester, but only by using selections. Don't be afraid of this book. It's even reasonably priced. But if you try to foist it on undergrads, you might be buying a rebellion.

A better text for a fast and dirty overview could be Peter Barry's "Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory." ISBN: 0719062683. I was taught this book at another school and it's great if you're looking for conversational, succinct, 12-page chapters on all the major schools, in chronological order. But you won't get a deep understanding from Barry's book, and it will only frustrate those who actually want an understanding they can take away long after they put the book down.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is the devil!
this book is the devil! i am using it in a lit studies course and loathe every second i waste reading these essays. they seem to be written mostly by stuffy university professors who are attempting to sound like they know what they are talking about. It is not a dictionary, nor does it help the reader properly understand a term.If you are curious about a word that is discussed in the book, i suggest looking it up in the dictionary.it's easier. and you'll actually learn what the word means without having to search through thick sentences that really make no sense and large words that you know the author just pulled out of a thesauraus. ... Product Description
Salvos of sane and humorous dissent from the worship of the almighty market.

For a magazine dedicated to debunking the nation's business culture, the final years of the twentieth century overflowed with bounty. "It was the most spectacular outbreak of mass delirium that we are likely to see in our lifetimes," wrote the editors of The Baffler. What was for others the dawn of a "New Economy" was for The Baffler a cornucopia of absurdity—the costliest political and financial hustle in living memory.

Reporting from places far from the white-hot centers of the libertarian revolution, Baffler writers were the people of whom it was fashionable to say they just don't get it. While New Democrats turned somersaults for Wall Street and economic commentary became puffery, these bold, talented, and very funny writers observed the crescendo of folly with which the century turned.

Here their best writings are selected, updated, and reaffirmed, to sharpen our wits and inoculate us against follies yet to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Other's have been better
I preferred "Commodify Your Dissent" from these guys.

That said, if you haven't read the former then this book may be good for you (or distasteful depending on your politcal slant).

I'd recommend the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars They sky really did fall.
The wit and humor of the writers may be lost on many, their views and ideas old and cynical and their messages falling on deaf ears. Funny thing is, they know this and write anyway. The book consist of article that were written before "the bubble popped" for the new economy. They do criticize our culture and do so without flinching or holding back any idea they might have about where the American Dream is at.

I thought the book was great and although some of the writing was done so in a way some might associate with pompous and cynical attitudes, I could not help but listen to their words. They were the canaries in the coal no one listened to, who warned people, judged cultures and ask for something different. I think the book is more of a "I told you so" shot by the editors, I think it is an example that people can see disaster but do nothing to stop it. I recommend this book for anyone who lost money through internet stock, anyone who searches for "real" indie rock bands, for anyone who interested in social issues or anyone simply looking for a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars it takes a sick person to laugh out loud
When my husband and I recently moved cross-country, he protested me wanting to keep my old copies of The Baffler."Come on," he cajoled, "You're never going to read those things again."I read to him aloud from this collection as we were driving to Atlanta last week, so I think my magazines are off the chopping block for awhile.

Boob Jubilee contains my all-time favorite Baffler article, "The Intern Economy and the Culture Trust."This is a must-read for all young people considering a career in the media.

4-0 out of 5 stars A really mixed bag
This book appears to be a collection of someone's (or some committee's) favorite articles from The Baffler, a literary magazine whose main job seems to be poking jabs at our culture. The title certainly doesn't help in determining that as "Boob" itself is such a multi-use word nowadays.Furthermore, many Americans west of the Mississippi have never heard of the New Economy and could care less about about literary criticism.

I think the audience for this book is really limited and not consistent with the title or the book cover. However, once you get past the first couple of reallllly dry essays, there are some that are worthy of more attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, funny, informative
The first two chapters might turn you off, I came close to stopping my reading of the book, but was urged on by friends and it payed off.The first two chapters are rather dense and not so witty, but soon after that this book really takes off.I am not totally 100% on the unifying theme of these essays, they claim to be poking a hole in the idea of the New Economy, but they all add up to more of a poking holes in various aspects of society -- of the "hip" society.

The essays tend to have a sense of humor about them as they go about their disections of culture.A few take themselves too seriously, one about the Mississippi river is just bizarre.I don't know that there is anything particularly groundbreaking here, much of the exposed secrets of the New Economy can be summarized "rich man bad, poor man good."You'd think they could be a little more insightful than that.I am not fully with the politics of this book, but I give it its five stars for being quite readable and, in the end, making us think. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Find
This book (and many others like it) have been a great find for my family.I am homeschooling a second-grader and these books have been the key to getting him interested in reading, and have become the foundation of our reading curriculum this year.Since we are studying American history, they are relevant, fun, and are about topics to which he can relate. His interest in both reading and history has increased, and he can't wait to get to the next book.At this point level 3 readers are easy for him, level 4 readers are just hard enough to be a challenge (but not too much) and level 5 readers will be tackled in the spring.

Thomas Jefferson's Feast is great because you get to know the everyday T.J. and things that he liked. We found out that he was responsible for introducing thingsto this continent that we really love such as tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. My son loved the story.

This book is great paired up with "A Prairie Dog for the President" about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is great for what it is
All of the books in this series take one personality trait of a famous person and talk about it.The trait they chose for Jefferson was that he liked to eat.The fact that the "feast" happened over several parties as opposed to one meal is not an important enough piece of "fiction" to justify saying that the book is bad.The book does not talk about Slavery. That is covered in the book about Harriett Tubman, which is also a very good book. This is a Step Into Reading book, not a complete history of Thomas Jefferson book.Although the reading level is 2nd - 4th grade, the content is PreK - 1st.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where are the slaves?
There are enough facts about Thomas Jefferson to easily fill a book hundreds of pages in length. So why, a reader might wonder, would an author choose to even partially fictionalize a 48-page-long children's book. Six pages are filled with specific information about a feast that did not take place, and although clarified in the author's note, it seems that young children are unlikely to distinguish fact from fiction in a biographical book. Additionally, the idea of a man who owned 100-200 slaves at any given time preparing an entire feast by himself is nonsensical. Only two pages portray slaves: one shows a smiling man at the door of a dumbwaiter; another, two small figures working the land. Their almost-absence, when recounting the life of a man whose existence depended so heavily on their labor, borders on revisionism. The illustrations are very good; the factual parts of the story are excellent; and the inclusion of several French words, complete with meanings and pronunciation, is a bonus; but the truth is overly bent. Abe Lincoln's Hat by Martha Brenner, another in the Step Into Reading series, is equally good, but all true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!
This is a wonderful children's book about our third president (US).It provides a fun story about how he loved to read and write and eat!He brought foods back from France that weren't popular here and made them famous.Jefferson got people to finally try love apples or tomatos, thought to be poisonous here in the US, but eaten often in France. ... More than any other introductory physical geology textbook, Understanding Earth is designed to bring the worldview of the working geologist to an audience not only new to this specific field, but in many cases to science in general. Students aren't merely presented with concepts and processes--they come to learn how we know what we know, and how that knowledge impacts their lives as citizens and consumers.

4-0 out of 5 stars textbook: Understanding Earth
Good, clear information on the condition of this textbook. However, the outside condition is not so important, as a damaged textbook generally just shows it has been well loved. Highlighting, underlining, names inside cover however, decrease the value of books, because they diminish the aesthetic appeal, and just make it harder to read. This book had none of those problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good?

Not so Good Shape but Good service though. I was not comfort with the shape of the book, so i wanted to return it, they don't have the return policies right in their profile, but on the contrary for how hard i thought it was gonna be to return it, the process was really smooth.

I have some background in biological science and I have always wanted to find a way to get up to speed on geology because so much of evolutionary biology has reference to geology. I have gone through one textbook andnumbers of Internet readings on geology. I can say that I learnt a great deal from these. Yet when I started to read this book 'Understanding Earth' a whole new understanding opens up before me. I like this book for its simple and comprehensive explanations and its coloured cross sectional representations which seem to transport me to be right there on the spot! I am halfway through the book and I have a great feeling that whenI finish I will have then acquired a whole new discipline, not perhaps to the level of a graduate student but sufficient for me to base my biology on it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Calculus 11th Edition
Thomas Calculus is one of a number of college-level calculus text. It's decent enough, but after working with it for the past month, I can make these observations:

1) The explanatory writing is ok, but unnecessarily awkward at times, making certain concepts abstruse.
2) The examples are fairly good, but when they show the solution method, they skip certain intermediate calculations, making the solution more difficult than it needs to be (this is a common offense)
3) The exercises often call on skills not covered in the text, again making problems more complex than necessary.
4) The answers in the back of the book for odd-numbered problems don't always provide the understanding required to master the particular skill.

So many of the problems are impossible to solve without the solution guide, which is truly the fault of the author. Many of these types of books suffer from the same issue, whereby it seems that the author has ego problems trying to show how much more clever he is than his peers. No wonder so many people lose interest in math - it's presented in a way that is more difficult than it needs to.So in conclusion, it's an average college level textbook. ... Product Description
Until the publication of this annotated edition, Thomas Paine's third part of "The Age Of Reason" was extremely rare and almost unknown. Titled "Examination of the Prophecies," the book examines all the supposed prophecies of Jesus in the Old Testament alleged by the evangelists of the New Testament. With great wit and penetrating logic, Paine showed that not one of the Old Testament passages cited had anything to do with the Christian's would-be Messiah. Paine appears to have been the first writer in English to suggest that Jesus was not an historical figure.

Frank R. Zindler's marginal notes and commentary examine the Greek and Hebrew texts of the verses being discussed. They show that Paine, who knew no ancient languages and knew of none of the important biblical manuscripts that would be discovered after his death, was astonishingly correct in his critique. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Little known work of Thomas Paine
This is one of the latter works written by Thomas Paine, one of the
founding fathers of the U.S. and writer of THE AGE OF REASON, a two part
treatise on the error of the concept of written revelation, particularly
in the form of the bible. This book is titled as part of that work, but
this part is rarely to be found in any edition of it, but is found
simply under the separate title of EXAMINATION OF THE PROPHECIES. If you
have not read the two parts before this one, I recommend you do, as much
of this one will not make sense without them.

In this work, Paine examines many supposed prophecies, mostly those
mentioned in Matthew, since that gospel is the one that lays claim to
the most prophecies out of any of the gospels. Paine shows the original
statement in the Hebrew scriptures that the New Testament writing
quotes, often altered, and displays with his characteristic humor how
out of context and contrived they are. He also did some of this in part
2 of THE AGE OF REASON.

This particular edition is helpful in that the editor, Zindler, includes
some commentary with insights from the original Hebrew and Greek that
Paine did not have at his disposal, showing how frequently he was
correct in his assessments, as well as places where he was mistaken.

This is an important addition to the library of anyone interested in
Thomas Paine or in biblical criticism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prophecies
This book is a excellent antidote to books like "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" that fool unsuspecting readers into the validity of the Bible.Paine's work "Examination of Prophecies Age of Reason" examines one by one, each alledged prophecy and compares them to the Old Testament to determine if the texts where prophecies or not. It's a superb work on the NT but really belongs with a Christian, he needs to read it much more than a non-believer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A look at out-of-context prophecies.
Many Christians cite Old Testament passages as prophecies of Jesus that appear in the New Testament. In this work, Thomas Paine exposes all of the so-called prophecies as either irrelevant or taken out of context from theoriginal Old Testament passages. This is the Third Section of hismasterwork "The Age Of Reason" which does not make all editions, due to its' content, yet it is probably the most vital section.Thisparticular edition is made even all the more valued by the footnotes ofAmerican Atheist scholar and writer Frank Zindler. He does an excellentjob in clarifying the Greek and Hebrew grammar problems and also in makingcertain chronologies clearer. This is an excellent book for the debunkerof Biblical claims. ... Here I was struggling towards unknown dangers, but i was living, i was part of an adventure. I was in the midst of an experience that my sedate fellow doctors in their well-appointed offices on Harley could only find in flights of fantasy. I was actually partof the stuff tha dreams are made of and, somewhat to my suprise, i found it exhilarating. Because of my association with the greatest detective the world has ever known, I was part of an heroic saga, a small part I will admit. Not that I felt heroic. 3-0 out of 5 stars Another game afoot!
In the 1980s, Frank Thomas wrote a number of novels featuring Sherlock Holmes and Watson, and all were published in German, I believe, but not all in English due to a paperback publisher going paws-up in the midst of the series. Now some of these are being brought to print, or reprinted as the case may be, by Xlibris.

Events of the present novel seem to take place right after the previous Thomas-authored adventure of the Panamanian Girls. Holmes and Watson are called to France to investigate a mysterious theft from the Louvre, then back to England to deal with a baffling kidnapping of a 6-month-old child from the family of Britain's chief economic advisor,a strange night attack on Miss Regina Braham in her own bedroom, and a suspicious buyup of DeBeers diamond mining stock. All the cases conveniently turn out to be connected, and the identity and motive of the ultimately-revealed villain took me by surprise. As usual in the later Holmes novels of Frank Thomas, Holmes employs a fairly large set of shady individuals with slightly illegal talents, in the course of his investigation, and gets a lot of help from Mycroft's multitalented aide Wakefield Orloff. I read the novel in a few hours, with a permanent smile on my face... the company was very pleasant, Holmes was true to his origins, the reader's intelligencewas not insulted, and the plot and action held my interest throughout.

As with all the Xlibris books I have inspected, misprints are very few (I noted only a case of misplaced quotation marks), but someone needed to write down the word "bizarre" on a scrap of paper and tape it up where they could view it constantly. It is spelled correctly on the book's front cover, but not on the spine! It is spelled correctly in the text, but not on the title pages or on the page headers! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Frankly, my dear Frank...
I bought this book based on Frank Thomas' "Sherlock Holmes and the Golden Bird" Well, that book was a big four stars at the least. But these stories just don't measure up to the brilliance of that novel. Maybe it was the lack of using Watson's voice to tell the stories. I mean the stuff was there, but I failed to appreciate the presentation. Three Sherlock stars, reluctantly. Quoth the Raven... ... Read more

Product Description

Perhaps best remembered as the writer and composer of the ever-popular Guys and Dolls and the Pulitzer Prize–winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Frank Loesser was one of the great songwriters of the twentieth century. Lyricist of over 700 songs—among them such cherished favorites as “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” “Once in Love with Amy,” and “I Believe in You”—his work has received both Tony and Academy Awards. Here Thomas L. Riis, in a deeply informed and lively discussion of Loesser’s life and musical career, presents a critical look at one of the most important—though often overshadowed—Broadway composers.

Immensely prolific and a personally magnetic man, Loesser was a major figure during the Broadway golden age that included Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and Bernstein. Riis traces Loesser’s early career as a Hollywood songwriter and a noted contributor to the war effort. He discusses in depth each of Loesser’s musicals and provides a look at the legacy of a man admired as a mentor who inspired dozens of assistants, protégés, young songwriters, novice singer-actors, and aspiring producers. This book offers a concise look at Loesser’s life along with an engaging examination of the totality of his works.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
There were only two reviews here to guide me and one loved the book, while the other was disappointed and now I have to tip the scale toward the disappointed end. I was looking forward to a book that would compliment Susan Loesser's bio on her father and perhaps give some more pertinent professional and creative information, but what I got was a mostly boring academic study of only a few of his shows by an academic who seems to have never really SEEN any of this show or have a real sense of the Broadway landscape during the period. I was turned off early by the author's assertion that Guys and Dolls is set in the 1920's when it was clearly a contemporary show at the time set in 1950 when it was produced. Miss Adelaide distinctly sing in Take Back Your Mink about "late '48".How could the show be in the 20's? Take a look at the photos and you can see the style of dress. But that is a small point which only proves that the author is quoting other books and not really knowledgeable about his subject. I was totally bored with the musical examples and found myself skimming those chapters. Knowing all the songs and shows well, I was hoping for some kind of background not found in other books or at least a brilliant analysis of Loesser's work. I did enjoy it on a superficial level and it has made me go and listen to all my Frank Loesser records and cd's and re-explore his complete lyric book, but it is not an essential book and I fear for the rest of the series if books are being assigned to this kind of "academic" writer, rather than a true writer with an affinity for musical theatre or at least someone with a tasty sense of what was wonderful and fun. Now, the question is do I buy others in this series and hope for the best...hmmm....

2-0 out of 5 stars Not SoHot
This book was awkwardly organized and makes what had to be an interesting life sound sort of academic. The writer has no gift for anecdote and no flair. There are lots of absorbing show business biographies out there and this isn't one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Biography on a Great Songwriter
This book is just the biography Frank Loesser deserves. It analyzes his wonderful music very thoroughly, as well as his lyrics, which were always conversational and always expertly crafted.
However, he book does not get all that in depth regarding Mr. Loesser's personal life, which was certainly colorful being that he worked with talents such as Cy Feuer, Bob Fosse and most importantly, Abe Burrows as well as mentoring up and coming songwriters such as Jerry Herman, Richard Adler, Meredith Wilson and Stephen Sondheim. However, not conetrating on that very much doesn't make the book bad. The analyisis of his work makes up for it in spades. I can hardly wait for the other titles in this Yale Broadway Masters series to be released as Kander and Ebb, Kurt Weill and the other songwriters who will be written about in future volumes deserve equally exceptional biographies. ... Product Description

Thomas Frank has been sending wake-up calls to just about everyone within reach over the past decade, in venues from The Village Voice to Harper's. His takes on labor politics, advertising, the virtues of the Midwest, and how un-cool you really are have won him a wide audience, and in this piece, Frank gives us a reading of cultural studies—viewed by some as an important new perspective in the academy, but by others as an unwieldy theoretical fad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to use for calculus.
This book is very easy to learn from, even if you're learning by yourself. The book is very thorough. Whenever I take a class I look at the reviews of the book I'm going to use. And I always notice that math and science texts have low average reviews. But then when I use the textbook, I usually like it a lot. Same thing here. I think that textbook average scores get dragged down by people that are just utterly frustrated with math. Thomas is a good book for a calc class, but it's not a Spivak or Apostol type of book, so make sure you know what you're looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quality, with few exceptions
The shipping was fast, and the book was in new condition when I got it.The only problem I have with it is that the adhesive in the spine of the book is really weak, in which pages can be easily pulled out of the book. The pages are also so thin that they are prone to tearing.I'm pretty sure this is just a design flaw in the book manufacturer's part, and not from this specific seller.Regardless, this was a great deal at the time, and a few pulled/ripped pages are far more pleasing than paying twice the price for the same book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great job and received fast
Seller did a great job on everything. I received the book fast and in the condition the seller had promised.I'm satisfied with the purchase

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
Well written book though sometimes the learning material would get ahead of itself and you would have to skip a chapter that was more difficult than the chapter after it.

3-0 out of 5 stars This textbook is more for Math Majors
This textbook is great for those who are fluent in pre-calculus math and love challenging word problems.
But for me, Thomas Calculus gets too technical on their explanations and examples, making it hard to understand chapter concepts.
If you have the choice, pick "Calculus Early Transcendentals" by Howard Anton. I love this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is free.
This book, like a number of books on the Kindle list, are actually 'free' in the sense that if you go over to [...] and search for the title (like this one) you will be able to download the book as a PDF. Its copyright has expired. A number of 'enterprising' (and I use that term loosely) people have taken to downloading those books, republishing them as Kindle books and charging a modest fee for them. (Frankly I find $4.00 outrageous for something that took the guy maybe 3 minutes to do).

While its not illegal to sell out of print books for money, it is not particularly moral. However that is not what gets this book 1 star. It would actually be worth paying a bit of money for it IF the book had been reformatted from the original scans AND IF the "publisher" had put some time and effort into checking for missing pages and material, perhaps re-drawn some illustrations or added additional context. But none of that has been done, this is yet another example of the

5-0 out of 5 stars Edison His Life and Inventions (Kindle Edition)
Edison, His Life and Inventions (mobi)

This book does a good job of explaining Edison's personality, and a great job of explaining his achievements. The book is obviously carefully researched, and demonstrates a deep technical understanding of Edison's inventions. Thomas Edison was a prodigious inventor and a symbol of the American entrepreneurial spirit. His influence on the 20th century through the electric light, the phonograph, and his other inventions truly transformed the American experience. The book is well written, and I enjoyed reading it, and a reader looking for an understanding of Edison's inventions will not be disappointed. The Kindle edition of this book is very good!

1-0 out of 5 stars Glorified storytelling
Quite simply,if you want a one-sided glorified overview of Edison's achievements and life, then this book is for you.As is always the case, history is written by the victor (no matter how he won his fame). If you want a real lesson in the history of electricity, and how it affects you to this day - pick up a book about Nikola Tesla.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
I thought this was a good overview of his life, but being from Port Huron there are some mistakes in the book. The most glaring mistake is that he wasthrown off the train at Mount Clemens. It didn't happen there. He was thrown off the train at SMITH'S CREEK!

2-0 out of 5 stars Text Only
This book is fine for what it is, but it consists merely of a reprint of the original text.None of the original figures or illustrations are included, and these are an integral part of the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Starting in childhood, Thomas Alva Edison was full of curiosity (how did eggs hatch?) and always inventing (what science experiments could he do in the basement?) His interest in telegraphs helped him invent a transmitter to improve telephone communication, and his fascination with electricity led to the invention of the lightbulb--and networks of devices to send electricity throughout New York City. More than 1,000 of Edison's inventions, including the movie camera, movie projector, copy machine, and phonograph, have made our world a safer, brighter, and better place.

This book demonstrates how counselors can help people to use the resources they already have so they can address issues that come up in life. The authors show that most people have within themselves the strengths and resources to confront the issues positively that trouble their lives. The counseling method elicits resiliency, assets, and successful experiences from the client's past to foster positive change in the present. Case studies are included, drawn especially from marriage and family counseling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pragmatic and helpful book for people who are helpers, but who are not full-time counselors.
I had to read this book for a graduate school class in my seminary for Counseling Skills. This book is excellent for ministers and laity who want to be able to talk to people and help them find solutions to their problems. It is much less about digging deep into their past or bad experiences to analyze them.Instead, it is very solution-focused and future-leaning.

Rather than try to figure out the entire origin of a problem, the suggested technique is to look for exceptions to bad behavior--none of us is ever 100% consistent in anything! The method is to find times when the problem is not a problem, then help the client to conceive workable solutions to start building upon to make the exception become the norm.It isn't necessary to understand every aspect of why a problem is a problem in order to find a simple, workable solution.

I don't intend to take a lot more classes in counseling, but this book gave me a terrific framework to use in working with people. It has given me some tools to use, and the confidence to use them.

I highly, highly recommend this book, especially if you have a need to dabble some in counseling, but do not want to do it as your primary vocation. ... Read more
