Product Description
From the pages of The Baffler, the most vital and perceptive new magazine of the nineties, sharp, satirical broadsides against the Culture Trust. In the "old" Gilded Age, the barons of business accumulated vast wealth and influence from their railroads, steel mills, and banks. But today it is culture that stands at the heart of the American enterprise, mass entertainment the economic dynamo that brings the public into the consuming fold and consolidates the power of business over the American mind. For a decade The Baffler has been the invigorating voice of dissent against these developments, in the grand tradition of the muckrakers and The American Mercury. This collection gathers the best of its writing to explore such peculiar developments as the birth of the rebel hero as consumer in the pages of Wired and Details; the ever-accelerating race to market youth culture; the rise of new business gurus like Tom Peters and the fad for Hobbesian corporate "reengineering"; and the encroachment of advertising and commercial enterprise into every last nook and cranny of American life. With its liberating attitude and cant-free intelligence, this book is a powerful polemic against the designs of the culture business on us all.Amazon.com Review
In this thought-provoking collection of essays, editor Thomas Frank and other contributors to the contrarian journal the Baffler examine the unprecedented ascendancy of business as the dominating force in American life. If the closest historical parallel is with the Gilded Age and its all-powerful robber barons, Frank and his ilk clearly see themselves as the muckrakers out to expose the absurdities and abuses of big business. Today, however, advertising has come to permeate every aspect of our society, and corporations are in the business of manufacturing culture--what Frank calls the "Culture Trust." These essays analyze the ways in which this Culture Trust has co-opted the power of dissent by appropriating the language and symbolism of nonconformist youth culture, from hippie slang to grunge fashion; in other words, when the media markets rebellion, it becomes just another consumer choice. As evidence, the essayists explore the image of consumer as rebel pioneered by publications such as Details and Wired, as well as the preeminence of "revolutionary" business gurus such as Tom Peters. The result is a highly original book, a satirical and savage indictment of '90s consumerist culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Day Cultural Studies Changed
I'm not sure if The Baffler is still being published regularly and, if not, too bad because it was a small magazine that regularly published thoughtful and provocative essays of the old school (and I mean this in the best possible sense): they focused on the people and conditions of cultural production rather than consumption. Anyone who went to college in the 1990s knows the story of innovative consumers of pop music/soap operas/action thrillers and how they "negotiated" and "reappropriated" these products, but Fank and Co. turn there lenses elsewhere, to the producers mostly, and that what makes the Baffler so refreshing.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bunch of white guys sitting around talking
I actually agree with most of the analysis of culture, media, and business that Frank and his frat boys turn out but it doesn't change a thing as long as they are replicating the power structures they rail against by creating an in-club of overwhelmingly male hepcats.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting insights
A collection of some of the best writing from the magazine known for its scathing critiques of modern business and media practices. A good read, although at times I felt like they just hated everything. Still, some interesting looks into how rebellion and "alternative", among other things, have been co-opted by the mainstream and thus stripped of meaning.

2-0 out of 5 stars enough already..
Here we go again. The media giants are evil. They have consolidated to the point where a handful now own all the major information venues. They hijack culture in order to sell more schlock. They have turned rebellion into a marketable commodity.
A&R men are sleazy and just out to make a buck.
Corporate America is sick and sucking the life out of us. Publishers do this or that just to sell more books. Etc.
It goes on and on. The essays are really all over the place. A few are interesting and informative, but most are just more of the same negativity we are now accustumed to. Perhaps the essays werent so trite in the mid 90s when they were written, but Ive personally had enough. Not sure if there was one positive, remotely uplifting thing in any of the essays. Understandably, that isnt what the book is about, but I just found it often slanted and overkill. For ex, one full essay is devoted to how Wired magazine is dedicated only to selling its sponsors goods and fueling desire for constant consumption. The author seems to have overlooked that the magazine also discusses exciting scientific breakthroughs and offers articles from some of todays most well respected thinkers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insiteful and funny
This collection of essays provides a gutsy, incisive, and energetic critique of American consumer culture that surpasses and even ridicules the limp, flaccid, self-referential verbiage that academics try to pass off as a "radical", and "critical" examination of culture and power. "Commodify Your Dissent" is a series of critical essays, or "salvos" as the authors prefer to call them, that were printed in The Baffler during the 90's largely in response to the hypocrisy, and gluttony of the America's expanding techno-consumer culture. Using lucid, forthright language, direct examples, and actual critical thinking (not the mental self-gratification generated by tenured radicals) the authors demonstrate how corporate America has commercialized the concept of revolution and employed it along marketing and production guidelines that are-guess what-conformist and conservative. In the 90's culture, as these essays so aptly demonstrate, "free thinking, revolution" and "breaking the rules" really amounted to a double-speak ideology centered around buying more gadgets and helping companies to make more money, a process that was reinforced in words and letters by such "radical" cultural critics as Camille Paglia.

This book is bound to anger a lot of readers because, it's gutsy, direct, and ruthless in its battering of the misused tropes and recycled clichés that enable legions of consumers, workers, and managers to feel like they're breaking the rules when in fact they are merely conforming to and reinforcing them. I know it's a hard fact to face, but buying a recycled pair of bell-bottoms is not an act of rebellion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars fun little book
It is a fast paced mystery with some action. Holmes will make a leap of faith that is hard to see it does have its moments. If you like sherlock holmes then you should like this book. It comes close to capturing the spirit of the original stories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Watson and Holmes together again
At the story's opening, Holmes and Watson receive a visit from a gentleman who has come to pass on a case. The man is dying, and has not finished solving the case for which he was hired. It seems that a man in Berlin hired this man to find a statue called The Golden Bird. Several parties (all of them somewhat shady) are vying for the statue, and Holmes is interested enough to take the case. This leads our two heroes into an adventure which began two generations earlier -- and one which has left a path of murder in its wake.
The Golden Bird was just okay; it wasn't great, it wasn't terrible -- just okay. It is a rather lengthy pastiche and purists may balk at the liberties the author has taken with the characters of Holmes & Watson, but reading it was a good way to spend a couple of relaxing afternoons. I'd recommend it to people who read or collect Sherlock Holmes pastiches (as I do), but do strongly advise that they have a bit of background in Conan-Doyle's work. Although details pertaining to some of the original stories are mentioned (and noted with asterisks with explanatory text at the bottom of the page), it's a bit easier to read if you already have an idea of the actual Holmes cases. Otherwise, it's just an easy read (but with way too much info -- you know, like what everyone had for dinner or breakfast). Overall, not too bad -- I'll add it to my SH pastiche collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old loves this book
This frontier story is a favorite of my preschooler, I think because the two main characters, young girls, confront the fear of "monsters" while gathering flowers for their mother's birthday. The fears of night, being lost, and "monsters" are all addressed in a way that my son finds reassuring. He asks to read this story a lot. It's nice to find a story that doesn't involve commercialized characters with pre-determined story plots. The artistry and text are pleasing for the reader. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Frankie Thomas, Former Child Star, Writes Another Great Mystery
It is not known by many film fans, especially those of tender years, that former child star Frankie Thomas was also a writer.Hewrote for television and his most visible work seems to be the nine mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes that he wrote mostly, I believe in the70s.Bright and clever, he was noted for his tight plotting and evocation of time and place in his stories. And who can ever have too many entertaining mysteries featuring everyone's favorite sleuth, the great Mr. Holmes of 221B Baker Street?

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
As a long time fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's unequalled fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes, I found Frank Thomas' (One of televisions first space heroes; Tom Corbett) "SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE TREASURE TRAIN" to be a real treat.

I've read, and re-read all of Doyle's original work more times than I could hope to count. There's just something about the time period, the feel and the characters of Doyle's world that feels somehow right and comfortable to me. There's a rhythm to a Sherlock Holmes story and Thomas captured that rhythm brilliantly.

Based upon how much I enjoyed "SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE TREASURE TRAIN" I immediately sought out similar, additional books and managed to track down a copy of "SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE GOLDEN BIRD", also by Thomas. I hope to read them all. They'll be a fit addition to my Holmes collection.

If you can find it read it. There are used copies avaiable through Amazon's sellers.

3-0 out of 5 stars One more pastiche.
Thomas is neither the best or the worst of the hundreds who use Conan Doyle's great creation to make a buck. The style is somewhat truer to Doyle than most, but has a lack of depth.

That sain, the three books by Thomas are worth one read. Unfortunately they cannot be found in most large libraries. ... Read more

Here is a book that will impact the course of preaching in the twenty-first century. Through the lens of African American preaching, Frank Thomas sheds light on what "good" preaching is and what methods can be employed to achieve it. Celebration is an important component of any preaching that can be considered "good." 5-0 out of 5 stars Starting with the End in View
Frank Thomas has penned a rare book. Very few books on preaching address Black preaching from a sermonic and exegetical perspective. And very few examine celebration in Black preaching. Most people, naively simply think that "Black preaching is emotional." Thomas, instead, looks logically, rationally, and exegetically at the compelling nature of Black preaching. He outlines celebration in preaching as the passionate and compassionate presentation of a problem, resolution of that problem by Christ's Gospel of grace, and celebration of that resolution by the pastor and people as one united congregation. None of these three elements are only emotive, as they all involve cognitive, spiritual, experiential, and volitional components.

Thomas not only explains the "what," but equips preachers, of any race, with the "how to" of developing a sermon from start to finish that has as its goal corporate celebration of the good work of God. That work, as Thomas explains, moves from the context of the text and the Biblical work of God to the context of the people and the modern-day work of God.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Soul Physicians, and Spiritual Friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sermon planning useable in any tradion
Frank Thomas presents a thorough description of the process of preaching in the African-American tradition. In doing so, he makes the case that his "Sermonic Plot" for planning sermons can be adapted by preachers of any tradition to help not only plan the structure of the sermon, but also build in an assurance of grace for the hearers of the sermon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn What Makes Black Preaching So Compelling
What is it that makes Black Preachers so compelling? Why does it seem as though the Black Preacher is more passionate and emotional in presentation and the people?

Well this book seeks to answer these questions as well as defend the use of Passion and emotion in sermon delivery and preparation. This book presents a sermon as follows:

* Introduction of a problem
* Resolution of problem by the Gospel
* Celebration of the resolution of the problem.

At the introduction of the problem stage it is important to get the congregation on board in not only understanding mentally the problem, but experiencing the problem by being able to see the problem in their own lives. This is primarily emotional, but there is also a cognitive component

Then the black preacher skillfully shows how the gospel resolves not only the problem of the Biblical Story, but also the problem that the people are going through. This is primarily cognitive, but as always there is a emotional component.

Finally the black preacher closes with the clebration of the resolution stage. This celebration is experiential for we have experienced every other part of the sermon to this point. This is primarily emotional.

The writer privides tips and guidelines for celebration and even provides a method for sermon preparation that has celebration as the goal. This method includes a sermon worksheet that is to be filled out when putting together a sermon.

Finally, there are 3 sermons that illustrate the method which help to clarify the use of the sermon worksheet developed in the body of the book.

This is a good book that can help most preachers to provide an emotional component to their sermons.

The only thing I would probably like is a few more sermons that illustrate the method provided in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mountaintop Experience
Frank Thomas has developed a methodology for the kind of preaching that moves the congregation from the pew to the "mountaintop."Although this book is spiritually based, it contains steps to followthroughout the entire preaching process. One of the things I really likedabout the book is that it the powerful treatment of the subject of"celebration."Whereas, most authors of preaching books brieflymention the topic, Thomas provides a thorough analysis of the phenomenon asexperienced in African American Christian worship. He takes the time toexplain what celebration is, its purpose and function in preaching, and aprocess that evokes the spirit of celebration. This book moves the readerinto a state of awe by discussing the core belief of the "assurance ofgrace" as it relates to celebration and preaching.Thomas discussestheses topics from the emotive and theological perspective of blackpreaching and the impact it has on the hearers of the sermon. When thereader is able to fully grasp what Thomas is saying, he or she is betterequipped to design and deliver sermons, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, thattouch the very souls of the congregation, and motivate or challenge thepreacher to be the cheerleader in the worship service that, "neverquits praisin' God.This book is suitable for any preacher who loves topreach. The material in this book is suitable for both professional clergyand lay ministers alike. ... Read more
