1-0 out of 5 stars I never received this book.
I ordered this book a month and a half ago and I still have not received it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poems LikeCandles in the Darkness.....
I have to admit that I began reading and collecting Ms. Gallagher's poetry at first because she was Raymond Carver's lover and his poetry had broken my heart and put it back together again too many times to count.I know, I know, just because a woman beds a man does not mean she absorbs his talent by some sort of literary osmosis, but still.....I was not disappointed and am overjoyed to have acquired this early book of her poetry.

Her poems flow and float like clouds over a river with a gentle breeze blowing.I like this book even better than her later work. Each poet opens our eyes to a new world. It's a sort of rebirth.I highly recommend this book to all poetry lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swept Away!
She has a voice I've never heard before that I've needed to hear for a long, long time. There is unflinching lucidity here and honesty. "Each Bird Walking" takes no prioners. "The Hug" is."If Poetry Were Not a Morality" is my memory too. The Fireman fromBrooklyn glitters with hard truth

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book!!!
This is one of my favorite books of poetry.Ms. Gallagher's style (phrasing, imagery) is very unique and her voice is both strong and delicate. You will not be disappointed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful images, delicately written about
This book is a collection of poems from "Under Stars," "Instructions to the Double," "Willingly," and several dozen new poems. It's lovely, a joy to read. My favorites are from "Under Stars," and the poem "Under Stars," is worth the price of the book itself. Tess Gallagher's poems are stunning and strong, with such delicate phrasing. A must-read if you enjoy poetry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Wisdom, Memories That Heal
This is an incredibly rich testament to the power of the human spirit, and the patient love involved in living with and caring for someone very dear who suffers from progressive dementia. As both a hospice nurse and the son of a sweet mother who recently died after many small strokes causing dementia, I am grateful for the honesty and beauty of these many poems and Tess Gallagher's very moving Foreward. Very highly recommended -- but sometimes some tough stuff in here!

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad to find this!

I am living with and caring for my 92 year old mother who now has almost no short term memory. This collection of writings from people who have experienced this difficult journey is a gift that heals, encourages, teaches, and supports my efforts to give my failing mother comfort and joy during this difficult time.I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Inspires Observant Loved Ones
Alzheimer's steals brains. It destroys its victims and isolates their caregivers. Holly J. Hughes's Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer's Disease shares the writings of 100 contemporary authors who have personal experience with the disease. These nurses, doctors, social workers, sons, daughters, and spouses take the reader "beyond forgetting" and into unexpected discoveries. Hughes's book would have given me a community when I thought my mother was dying one cell at a time--two years before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

The poems and prose tell stories of hope, love, loss, fear, bewilderment, desperation, amazement, amusement, delight and more. Each piece captures a specific memory and reflects on the impact of that moment on the patient, the caregiver, and the relationship. Candace Pearson writes about loss of language in "Another Country." Len Roberts recalls his aunt's hilarious antics in "My Uncle Chauncey drove my Aunt Eleanor." Nancy Dahlberg gives us love and role reversal in "We All Fall Down." Sybil Lockhart rediscovers her mother's physical beauty in "Naked." Donna Wahlert shares the acceptance that Alzheimer's brought her in "Late Middle Alzheimer's Disease."

The experiences of these spouses, daughters, sons, doctors, nurses, and caregivers touch on nearly every emotion imaginable. The authors have been transformed by their experiences. Readers will be transformed too. Caregivers will identify. Former caregivers will remember. Prospective caregivers will get a glimpse into the joy and beauty that often emerges from pain. This inspiring book reads like a 100 snippets of memoir.

Each author's brief personal story, found in italics at the end of the piece, adds a layer of context that strengthens the message. They added a level of humanity and grace that is important for other caregivers to witness.

Throughout, the writing is clear, heart-felt, multi-layered, and reflective. It embraced me and made me proud of my time as my mother's caregiver.

Kudos to editor Holly J. Hughes for her concept; to Tess Gallagher, who wrote the foreword; and to the women and men who shared their stories, perceptions, and memories in Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer's Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Sharing in a Much Needed Book
Holly Hughes has done the work for us, gathering the writing of others who name and describe the struggle and, yes, rewards of dealing with Alzheimer's Disease. As we learn in the Preface, her inspiration came close to home as she dealt with her mother, as did Tess Gallagher who provides the beautiful Foreword to the book. So many writers have dealt with this from the inside and here share their own stories. In poem after poem, they witness the confusing struggle to care well for loved ones and keep a dignity of person for both the cared for and the caregiver. In a book that is 90% poetry, I find the prose section titled "Missing Pieces" powerful as in Sarah Levitt's "Kaddish" where she wishes for a prayer to say not at the final death of the person, but each day with the small deaths of memory. Hughes has chosen to request and print a personal "note" from each writer at the end of their piece, which though reductive of the writing itself, extend the circle of caring. I thank her and Kent State University Press for having the foresight to publish a book for our times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, artful glimpses into the world of Alzheimer's Disease
This anthology includes pieces written and shared by (and for) individuals living with (or worried about developing) Alzheimer's, as well as works by and for the caretaking sons and daughters, spouses/partners, members of the medical community, siblings and others who have been touched by the disease. As you would hope, it is by turns sad, joyful, wrenching, appreciative, frustrating and familiar yet wondrous--and always illuminating. Another thing that I like about this particular collection is that although I'm sure that a full read-through from start to finish is most meaningful, even we non-poets can pick it up and open it at random to be rewarded with small glimpses--and sometimes a wide-angled "heartfull"--of the world of this disease from many, many different perspectives. You won't forget this one.I am glad to have read it and to feel a certain connection to the community of contributors, having lived some of their stories myself. ... Read more

Product Description
A remarkable collection of Edward Hopper's most important paintings and original stories and poems by prominent contemporary writers. This volume includes fifty-nine of Hopper's most important works in full color, as well as original works by thirteen renowned fiction writers and poets that pay homage to, or make reference to, the ways in which Hopper pictured our world. The contributors include Paul Auster, Anne Beattie, Tess Gallagher, Thom Gunn, John Hollander, William Kennedy, Galway Kinnell, Ann Lauterbach, Norman Mailer, Leonard Michaels, Walter Mosley, Grace Paley, and James Salter. Also featured is an essay by art historian Dr. Gail Levin. Hopper's themes of alienation and loneliness, empty cityscapes and countrysides, the stark light of Cape Cod, silent hills and housesall have been indelibly imprinted on our collective sense of ourselves and our country. This work celebrates the impact Hopper's imagery continues to have on contemporary culture and is dedicated to a fuller understanding of Hopper's place in the American mind. ... Read more

I believe that this was one of the greatest art books. This outstanding book displayed 59 of Hopper's greatest paintings with awesome detail and spectacular quotes. It not only showed the different ways Hopper defined and looked at life, but I could feel like I was the artist. Not only did the paintings create a perspective of life most people don't look at, but I could relate to his points of view. ... Product Description
A culmination of four years of photographing throughout Oregon, Washington and Northern California, Sawdust Mountain focuses on the tenuous relationship between industries reliant upon natural resources and the communities they support. Timber and salmon are the bedrock of a regional Northwest identity, but the environmental impact of these declining industries has been increasingly at odds with the contemporary ideal of sustainability. In this, his second book, Johnson reveals a landscape imbued with an uncertain future--no longer the region of boomtowns built upon the riches of massive old-growth forests. Johnson, a Seattle native, describes his photographs as, "a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings..." Through this poetic approach, Sawdust Mountain records a region affected by historic economic complexities and, by extension, one aspect of our fraught relationship with the environment in the twenty-first century.
Eirik Johnson, born in Seattle in 1974, is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, George Eastman House and Aperture Gallery. His first book, Borderlands, was awarded the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2005. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the incredible book....
"Thanks for the incredible book...best holiday gift I recieved this year."

This was the subject line from the note I got from a friend (architect and well known creative guru) I had recently purchased this book for.I got a copy from another friend when it first came out and found myself fully emerged in the incredible photography for countless hours (no joke!).I rarely if ever write product reviews but this one is worth writing about.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful and thought-provoking
What I love about this book is that it combines a variety of photographic modes -- portraits, landscapes, interiors, close-ups -- and merges them into a unified theme that gives the viewer a powerful message of environmental and economic transformation.I return again and again to the images, some because of their sheer beauty ("Rogue River", "Destruction Island"), others because of their poignancy ("The Sweater Store"), and others because of their compelling subjects (several of Missy, "Storefronts").Whatever your interests, I believe you will find this book a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Context is everything
Eirik Johnson's book serves as an unbiased observation of the inter-workings of the Pacific Northwest forest industry and hits it's mark well.Far from the environmental battlegrounds of Olympia, Seattle, or Washington DC, Eirik's images show life in and around the forest industry in it's raw state: second growth stands awaiting harvesting or the cedar salvager working post harvest to make shakes. The book strikes the balance between what was and what will be; the heyday of the big trees may be gone from the sawmill, the clatter concerning the spotted owl silent (hushed--it seems--by the rain itself), and homes left abandoned (its past inhabitants searching for perhaps sunnier days?), but life does indeed persist.Either in the eggs of the salmon to be or in the earnest pride in the face of the future Star Wars convention attendee, the book lays bare the forest and its inhabitants for what it is; a working ecosystem where consumption, preservation, conservation, and industry readily co-exist, where people live in, not apart from, the ecosystem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Work - Impressive Photos
I recently saw Johnson's work on display at the Henry Art Gallery. His work describes a heretofore undocumented aspect of American history. Shown alongside historic photos of the Pacific Northwest from early pioneer days, one gets a sense of the place in history that Johnson's work claims.

For hundreds of years people have been hunting, gathering, farming, scavenging, building dams, logging, developing housing and even selling Star Wars memorabilia in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Now someone has documented these people and the land they rely on.A mix between the work of Ansel Adams and Robert Franks, this work is as important as Franks' "The Americans" Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, Expanded Edition and as beautiful as Adams' "California". California: With Classic California Writings

Fans of Raymond Carver's work would enjoy a rainy day with Where I'm Calling From: Selected Stories and Johnson's book as a complement. As to claims that the artist is trying to cash in on some environmental movement, I don't see it.This work brings the reader and viewer a real slice of America that many people would otherwise never get to see due to the inaccessible nature of so much of the Northwest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!
I've been following the author's work since seeing it in a San Francisco gallery. The work focuses on the physical space - inner-city, urban fringe, or in the case of this book, outer rural environments - which are influenced and altered by the people who live among them.In Sawdust Mountain, the author is able to observe the indelible beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the impacts of the people who - right or wrong - survive from its resources. After ingesting these poignant photos, you are left with a bit of heartache:for the natural wonder of these places, the people who find home in its beauty, and lastly their struggle to simultaneously preserve and live off its resources.

Some of my favorite photos convey the depth and scale of these places:the old abandoned passenger/freight train being enveloped by nature; expansive rivers and timber log jams; the drive-in movie screen reflecting - what? - a setting sun?; and the mildly disturbing star wars paraphernalia sales guy.The photos capture the spectrum...thumbs up. ... Excerpt: Jon-Henri Damski (31 March 1937 1 November 1997) was an American essayist, weekly columnist, poet and community activist in Chicago's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities from the mid to late 1970s until the late 1990s. At the time of his death, Damski was the longest-running columnist published in the American gay and lesbian press, having written for publication every week from 8 November 1977 until 12 November 1997. Damski is also considered the first gay columnist in the American Midwest to publish under his real name and photo, starting in January, 1979, when no legal protections existed in the city of Chicago to give one recourse if fired from a job, or forced from housing, due to sexual orientation. Damski's epigrams, columns and poetry have been gathered in several collections and anthologies (see "Damski and Firetrap" section, below). Jon-Henri Damski was considered one of the people most instrumental in helping to pass Chicago's Human Rights Ordinance in 1988, which granted protections in jobs and housing to members of the gay and lesbian communities within the city. In this campaign, Damski worked closely with activists Arthur Johnston (Damski's close friend and benefactor), Rick Garcia, and Laurie Dittman; working under the auspices of the organization Gay and Lesbian Town Meeting, the quartet became widely known as the "Gang of Four." Damski was considered especially influential in securing support for the Human Rights Ordinance from conservative aldermen who had in the past opposed the bill. In 1990, Damski worked to pass Chicago's...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23633622 ... Read more

Excerpt:Blue Heelers Character Profile Adam Bryce Cooper was a fictional character in the Australian police drama series Blue Heelers . He joined the cast in late 1994 while the programme was still in its first season. He was transferred to Mount Thomas as his first station straight from the police academy at age 19 and took Roz Patterson s place when she was dismissed from her employment as the station s administration officer for accessing confidential police records. Adam was a bright spark of an officer with plenty of potential and plenty of questions. He was very young for a police officer and could appear slightly immature at times though he had a good heart and love for his job. Character Storylines Season 1 Season 1 for Adam mainly focused on his introduction to and breaking-in at the station. The first time Adam appeared in the series, he was at the academy and Wayne Patterson had travelled there himself to complete further study. It was here that Adam and Wayne met and Wayne began to show his dislike towards Adam. Adam managed to say all the wrong things and act the wrong way which irritated Wayne. This finished in Adam and Wayne having a violent confrontation and Adam finally decided to leave him alone. When he arrived at the station, he was the newest officer there and appeared a little out-of-place with all the mature officers. Season 2 Early in Season 2, Adam was bitten by a bouncer who was HIV positive in an attempt to capture and ... ... Read more
