Product Description

Instead of dream vacations to Disney World and hotels with swimming pools and water slides, the parents in Travels with My Family insist on obscure destinations in the middle of nowhere. They're determined to go, even if it means hours of dull driving filled with countless back-seat, argument-inducing games of Twenty Questions and out-loud readings of the “How to Change a Tire” chapter from the owner’s manual. But bad as the travel is, it's nothing compared to what happens when they arrive: eating grasshoppers in Mexico, forgetting the tide schedule while collecting sand dollars off the coast of Georgia, and mistaking alligators for logs in the middle of Okefenokee Swamp.

Travels with My Family is told from the point of view of a long-suffering big brother who must attend to many responsibilities in this eccentric family — keep little brother out of trouble; humor artistic Mom while she seeks out beauty and inspiration in the least likely places; and discourage nearsighted, tone-deaf Dad from pulling out the road map to search for yet another strange destination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful bed-time reading
We discovered this book, quite by accident. It is a wonderful read-aloud for any age. My 7 year old was so taken with the book that he insisted we search for the sequel as soon as we were done (fortunately, there is one). Not only did we both laugh aloud at the family antics, retold with wonderful humour and illustrations, but we discovered places to visit on future trips. Each chapter tells the story of the family's trip to an out-of-the-way place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Read-Aloud
Full of humor and escapades that families can relate to, this book is a great read aloud! It prompts your "remember when..." vacation stories and inspires"where shall we go next?" plans. Easy enough that my third grade son could read chapters to us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Empowerment
Lizzy's Lion is the most charming and delightful solution where little girl protects herself and dispels nighttime fears by inventing a guardian in the form of a closet cupboard lion.
With the very vivid childlike descriptions of how the lion disposes of a 'rotten robber' the reader is taken to the very logical conclusion.
I have read it to our many grandchildren who all love it and ask for it again and again while we all laugh and applaud Lizzy.

5-0 out of 5 stars childhood favorite
This book has been my favorite since I was a child. The words flow so well when reading to myself or my children. Although there are some grafic parts, they don't take away from the poem/story being youthfull and fun. I will always read and share with others this delightful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book
This has got to be one of the most fun books to read.It has a great story about a little girl who has a lion, with a big, bad roar that she unleashes on unsuspecting robbers.Although somewhat gruesome I still lovethis book.I highly enjoy reading this book to my little brother andsister who love it as well.I hihgly recommend this book as one thatshould be in any book collection. I've even bought myself a copy and I'm21.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rhyming Fun
Lizzy's Lion may surprise adults at first with it's some what gross discription but it thrills children. It is fun to read!

This book is rhyming fun with it's musical sentences.Dennis Lee has captured asingy-song additude.

The pictures are characteristic of the award winningMarie-Louise Gay.Her pictures are busy and wild.Gay's children aredepicted as cute but not perfectly pretty. She makes looking atillustrations fun. ... Read more

Product Description
Grownups sometimes tell you that dreams are not real. This little girl knows differently. In her world, dreams are much more real than bathtubs, houses, purple shoes, worms ... even the first day of school. Sometimes the dreams are fun; sometimes the dreams are scary. But, more importantly, the dreams tell her about the feelings she has inside. And if she can just get through it, that first day she's worried about might not be so bad. After all, dreams are even more real than school. And she's not just dreaming, you know. ... Read more

Product Description

Charlie and his family are taking another trip — this time to spend a year in a tiny village in southern France. Typically suspicious and resentful at first (they're going all the way to France, and they're not even going to be living in Paris!), big brother Charlie soon finds himself drawn into life in sleepy Celeriac. The family experiences the spring migration of sheep up to the mountain pastures, Dad is threatened by a raging bull, a spring flood makes a mess, and everyone forages for snails and mushrooms and has other adventures large and small. Most of all, though, Charlie and his little brother, Max, make friends of their eccentric new neighbors — the man who steals ducks from the local river, the neighbor's dog who sleeps in the middle of the street, and their new pals Rachid and Ahmed, who teach them how to play soccer using the open front door of the Catholic church as the goal! It's enough to make Charlie wonder if it's really so important to get to Paris. On the Road Again’s mix of rollicking humor, comic characters, and universal concerns like making new friends and living in a new place are a welcome addition for Gay's many fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical!
After reading Travels with My Family, my 7 year old insisted we search for a sequel.Fortunately, there was one. In this book, the family (author father, illustrator mother and 2 boys) goes to live in a small town in southern France for a year. True to their off-the-beaten track mentality, the parents pick a tiny town, where the family lives in an old farmhouse on a street wide enough for one narrow car, so long as the local dog (referred to as a snoring speed bump) deigns to move out of the way. Each chapter is a humorous and authentic view into French village life. For those who have lived in France, the stories carry a special humour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about siblings
This is a fabulous book ---captures siblings behaviour very well. Both my children enjoy reading it --- especially my 3 and half year old who really identifies with Louise, having an older brother herself who frequently needs some space from her.She likes to read it frequently and acts out the dialogue in the book with her animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sibling torture and love at its best!
Please, Louise perfectly captures the tense relationship between Louise, about 4ish, and her older brother Jake, maybe 7ish. She follows him around, messes up his stuff, and just generally annoys him. When he tries to ditch her by going outside to read a book, she follows him, of course - but when he looks up from his book, Louise is nowhere to be found. Weirdly, Jake was just wishing that Louise was a dog instead of a girl and lo and behold, a little pup appears out of nowhere! Great ending, and the watercolor, pencil and collage illustrations by Marie-Louise Gay are fabulous, full of energy and detail - note Jake's untied shoelaces! The quality of the printing is terrific, just the right sheen to the page and the contrast between the watercolor and pencil in saturation and light makes the illustrations even more captivating. ... In your pants

We've gone bad
