5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift
Just the kind of book that parents would like their young son to receive for a birthday or Christmas gift -- instead of so much other nonsense. The illustrations are beautiful and the message is valuable.Nothing disappointing about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Universal truths, but illustrations a little too Americana
I love this book. The pages are well written.Wish the illustrations had a little less American flag themed images. Not everyone who reads or buys the book is from the United States.I would like to give it to a friend who's son is not from the United States.Despite this, the book is so good I will be buying a second copy any way.Just wish the illustrations could be as universal as the words from Proverbs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Biblical Training for Boys
This book is beautifully illustrated and the rhymes stay in your head long after you have read them. It makes the book of Proverbs come alive for little hearts and minds. Through the illustrations and rhymes, it shows this book of wisdom in very practical and applicable way. I use it often for showers because it is so great. A must for little men of God.

Product Description
Now back in print, this life of George Eastman is the first biography since 1930 of the man who transformed the world of photography. In this revealing and informative work, Brayer shows us how such key innovations as roll film and the light, hand-held camera helped the Eastman Kodak Company dominate the world market. More importantly, Brayer draws a vivid portrait of the man behind the money. Eastman worked hard at staying out of the limelight and even insisted that his donations be kept anonymous, prompting the Boston Globe to call him "America's most modest and least-known millionaire."Despite his retirement in 1925, Eastman showed little sign of slowing down. Making money had been interesting, but putting money to work became more so. In the 1920s he designed a special camera for use in orthodontia and established elaborate dental clinics for needy children around the world. He oversaw the building of the Eastman theatre and the Eastman School of Music. His contributions built a new campus for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a new medical school for the University of Rochester. Finally, he became the largest contributor to the education of African Americans during the 1920s and the Tuskegee Institute's most important benefactor. Elizabeth Brayer lives in Rochester, NY. For the past 18 years she has served on both the George Eastman Legacy and the Landscape committees at the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. She writes about the history of central and Western New York State. George Eastman: A Biography was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1996.Amazon.com Review
The innovative founder of the Eastman Kodak Company was notgenerally known for his thirst for adventure, his love of art andclassical music, or his philanthropic activities, yet these were allimportant aspects of the man. George Eastman (1854-1932) was acomplicated individual who lived most of his long, industrious lifeout of the public eye; his private affairs both admirable and dubiousare now out in the open, thanks to this scholarly and scrupulousbiography. Eastman is revealed as cold, shrewd, modest, andsurprisingly generous in this colorful portrait. The text isappropriately enhanced by a number of rare photographs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars it sucked
I think they should explain how th invention works

5-0 out of 5 stars Eastman comes alive as a real person.
George Eastman was one of the seminal figures in the development of photography. Eastman was the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. Brayer's scholarly biography is long and definitive.

Eastman was perhaps thefirst scientist-engineer entrepreneur, a model followed later by men likeEdwin Land and Bill Gates. Brayer skillfully weaves his engineering featswith his financier skills into a highly readable biography. Eastman waslike Gates and Land, a hands-on entrepreneur. Stories abound aboutEastman's midnight haunts through his factory, showing up in the wee hoursunannounced to some startled employee working late on a project.

I wasconstantly amazed at Eastman's ingenuity. Eastman the inventory of flexiblefilm, made his first commercial batches by spreading the celluloid out onlevel 100-foot long glass topped tables. It wasn't until many years laterthey finally found a way to machine make it.

For my taste there was fartoo much information on the architecture and building of Eastman House.Since Brayer, as I understand it, was or maybe still is, an employee ofEastman House, now a foundation supported museum of photography, this isunderstandable. I did find it amusing that Eastman used Belgian importedglass plates that were to be used in the factory as a film base as windowglass in the House. Window glass will have an occassional ripple or bubble, but not these. George always had to have the very best.

Brayer has shedsome new light on several of the patent infringement lawsuits that wentagainst Eastman.

In many biographies, the subject is just that, asubject. Brayer does an exceptional job of bringing Eastman to life. If youhave an interest in photographic history or in financial history, this isan exceptional book. This is the first freely written biography of Eastman.Earlier attempts were quite controlled by the Trust and Eastman himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study
Elizabeth George always produces an excellent study. This one about Esther is no exception. This one is handy because the verses from the book of Esther are right there in text. There are other Bible verses that one needs to look up, but all of it helps bring the reader to the heart of Esther and reveals her dependence on God and her bravery. I am using this study in our girls' high school home school because it is so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars So powerful and refreshing
This Bible study is such a blessing.I have read the book of Esther many times, but this is the first time that I have taken such a simple but powerful look at the real Esther and just what she was all about. She was a faithful servant and followed every instruction to the letter, but she had back bone like no other. To sit across a feast table and accuse Haman of his wrong doing showed so much strength. This book is truly a book of Strength and Beauty. So simply put and easy to apply to our own lives. Elizabeth George is a wonderful writer for today's women. ... Read more

Product Description

New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George is back with a spellbinding tale of mystery and murder featuring Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley.

On compassionate leave after the murder of his wife, Thomas Lynley is called back to Scotland Yard when the body of a woman is found stabbed and abandoned in an isolated London cemetery. His former team doesn't trust the leadership of their new department chief, Isabelle Ardery, whose management style seems to rub everyone the wrong way. In fact, Lynley may be the sole person who can see beneath his superior officer's hard-as-nails exterior to a hidden—and possibly attractive—vulnerability.

While Lynley works in London, his former colleagues Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata follow the murder trail south to the New Forest. There they discover a beautiful and strange place where animals roam free, the long-lost art of thatching is very much alive, and outsiders are not entirely welcome. What they don't know is that more than one dark secret lurks among the trees, and that their investigation will lead them to an outcome that is both tragic and shocking.

A multilayered jigsaw puzzle of a story skillfully structured to keep readers guessing until the very end, This Body of Death is a magnificent achievement from a writer at the peak of her powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource of God's view of Women's Role
The Proverbs 31 woman flies in the face of so many stereotypes of the "woman's role".She was a businesswoman, an entrepreneur, an investor, a philanthropist, a planner, a manager and a teacher. She did not wait on anyone to determine what her place in the world should be.Elizabeth George's study of this amazing scripture did an excellent job of opening my eyes to what God sees when he looks at a woman.Whether you are doing a group bible study or an individual study of this scripture, this book is an important resource that should be included. The study is broken into small pieces so that a bit of it can be studied each day.I read and reviewed other materials of Proverbs 31 and this was the best resource I found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing a Paragon
I have used Ms. George's Bible studies for some time, but I was reluctant to have my class do this one. The Proverbs 31 woman is such a paragon of virtue that I didn't think any of us could measure up. This study acknowledges that the Proverbs 31 woman is a composite of virtues, which are probably not attainable by any one individual, but is, instead, a way to set goals for improving one's life. The study is worthy, and each lesson can be completed in twenty minutes or so, which is a virtue in our busy society. I recommend this study to individuals and small groups of women.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatStudy on Proverbs 31
I found this book very helpful because it's easy to read and it's broken up into do able time frames. Each chapter/study takes no more then 20 minutes to complete, but it makes you really consider what this woman was like and how that applies to you. I have found it very enjoyable.I highly recomend it to anyone wanting to further their study on the Godly Woman of Proverbs 31.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discovering the Treasures of a Godly Woman: Proverbs 31 (A Woman After God's Own Heart®)
In a womans life she may wear various hats such as mother, wife, counselor, friend, nurse ect. This book will help you set priorities, understand your purpose, walk daily in clear direction, and enjoy the order, simplicity and fulfillment God wants you to have for your life. This is a wonderful book it has blessed my life and I hope it will bless the lives of each of its readers. God Bless

4-0 out of 5 stars All of Elizabeth George's Studies
I think I have done all her studies and enjoyed them very much.

There are really only two things I have to say about them.

#1) I'm really not sold on the Calvinist beliefs, but could still do her studies without feeling like that perspective was shoved down my throat. She allows Scripture to speak to you for itself.

#2) She could really drop the "honey" and all the oozy, drippy sweetness and would lose nothing in the process. I grew tired of the condescending tones. I really imagine that in person, she probably relates that way and it comes across as truly loving and caring - but the written word somehow does not convey the same meaning. At least that was my perspective.

Yes, I highly recommend all her studies. You will grow for sure. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for something short and sweet
This book is not exactly what I expected.I was looking for a daily devotional that was a little more in depth than just a small blurb on a 4x6 page. There isn't bible verses to read each day, just more like a"thought of the day" for religious people. All in all ok for what it is, but not for what I expected.I'm not a fan of these types of books as they don't really get you into your bible at all or challenge you to apply the scripture to your life. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Growth and Study Guide
The way it was stated on the website, I thought that it was the book with the growth and study guide. So it was not what I wanted.I needed the book to finish a Bible study. So it was a waste of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need the study guide to supplement the book!
I am going through this study right now and although I love the book and the things it brings up, I feel that the study guide is essential for making it apply to you and your situation. The study guide does not take too long to go through for each chapter so I enjoy it a lot more than studies with hour long homework. The verses are good that the study guide points out and actually help bring out more area's that you may not have originally thought about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bible study in a long time!
I loved this study! It will chsnge your thought life for the better from the very first chapter.Easy to read and very practical. It can be for personal or group study.I bought one for my sister, my daughter and my son and will recommend it to anybody dealing with fear, anxiety, worry, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars life transforming
This is a life transforming book if you apply it ;-).Really helped me to see how to deal with depression and how important setting your mind on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, whatever has excellence whatever is worthy of praise---these are the filters for our minds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loving Him is the Focus
This is a timely book dealing with the battle we all face in our minds of where our focus is, what the truth is, and dealing with reality as it really is, both earthly and heavenly. It is refreshingly practical and guides the reader to take a good look at the truth of the past, present, and future.Having just completed a women's Bible class using this book, the only criticism is that there was too much looking at us, not enough at God.We do need to recognize the reality of our own lives, especially to be able to find freedom, but if we are to love Him with all our minds and see the beauty of walking each day with Him, I found the focus not to be quite as consistently upward as most of her other books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of nuggets of truth to learn from this book!
This was the first time I've done an Elizabeth George Bible study book, and I loved it!Each lesson takes only about 15-30 minutes to complete, but the nuggets of truth that you gather from the lesson can impact you for a lifetime.I studied this book with several other women in a small group, and we had lots of great discussions that sprang from the questions that Elizabeth George asked in her book.

I had a lot to learn from the topic of focus of this book: Humiility. What a neat experience it was to learn about humility from Mary, mother of Jesus, who followed and obeyed God so faithfully.I learned a lot from Mary's example as a child of God, a wife, a woman, and as a mother.

Each chapter of the study guide goes through an episode of Mary's life - from the virgin Mary who was told she would bear the Christ child, to the Mary who watched her son [and Savior!] endure the cross and triumph over sin and death.I have never learned so much about Mary's life as I did through Elizabeth George's study guide!I would definitely recommend this book to any woman interested in growing in their faith and into more of the likeness of Christ.I can't wait to go through another book by Elizabeth George! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Well-written but not too exciting
Kit Tyler traveled to Connecticut to live with her aunt and uncle after the death of her grandfather. She had to contribute to their family farm. This is very hard for Kit because she is used to having slaves do all of her work for her. I don't really know what it is like to have chores like hers but I do know that change is very hard. After a few weeks Kit feels unwanted and as if she can't do anything right. One day, she meets an old woman. Kit's aunt and uncle tell her never to go back. The people in the town believe she is a witch. Kit disobeys her uncle and goes back to the old woman. A disease descends on the town and the town accuses the old woman of witchcraft. They also accuse Kit of witchcraft because of her association with the old woman.

This is a short summary of the award winning "The Witch of Blackbird Pond". This isn't my favorite book. I have read a lot of books, good and bad. Although this is a well-written book, I don't really like the idea of witchcraft. Also, the most suspenseful part is when she is in court and being accused of witchcraft. But this part is very short. I like books that have long suspenseful parts. This way, you have to stop in the middle of it, predict what might happen, and hold your breath until you can find out what happens the next time you pick up the book.

The part that I do like about the book is that it really shows you how Kit feels. I feel really bad for her. She is accused of things she didn't do and she has to change her ways and that I know is very hard. It is even harder when your family doesn't even care.

You should read this book if you like stories about girls who struggle to fit into a new life and you don't mind that it's not so exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never too late to read this book
I, too, am a little past the recommended age for reading this book. But who's to say a baby boomer can't enjoy a book meant for a teener?

The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a real page turner. This time period in our history, when a young girl could be accused of being a witch for no reason at all, has always fascinated (and horrified) me.

This book offers a nice mix of fiction and non-fiction. It is poignant without being corny, thought provoking without being preachy.

Bottom line? Buy it for your child, or your grandchild... but read it before you give it to them!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Witch of Blackbird Pond
The book starts out with the main character sailing to America.I immediately liked the main character due to her courage and determination.Historically, the book was accurate. The book was a wonderful insight.I couldn't put it down when I first started it.The only thing I can say that I didn't enjoy about this book was that it was a bit slow.True, it wasn't slow all the time it only had slow parts.Other than that the book was utterly amazing.Without thinking I gave it five stars.I recommend this book to everyone, of every age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction for young adults
I read a lot of young adult historical fiction as a kid and this was one I read over and over. I think I just liked the characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Witch of Blackbird Pond
"Awaiting her in the bleak dwelling that was her new home were suspicion and loneliness. The master of the house despised everything about her. The man, who claimed he loved her, abandoned her to the circle of terror. And there was nowhere to turn, no one to help, no way to escape the evil claiming her as a victim...." Sounds good doesn't it. This book is about a girl, Kit, who leaves the only home she has known and travels to Connecticut in 1687. Kit grew up in Barbados and was raised by her indulgent grandfather. When he dies, she moves in with an aunt and uncle she has never met. Everything about Kit stands out, from her clothes to her opinions. She is forced to work hard for the first time in her life. She is practically friendless until she meets Hannah. However their friendship must remain a secret because the town believes Hannah to be a witch. Elizabeth George Speare does a remarkable job in describing early life in the colonies and relaying the loneliness of Kit. You can't help feeling sorry for her. This book is a Newbery Award Winner and definitely a To Read. If you like what you read visit by blog for other reviews:[...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Good gift; encouraging
I bought this book for Girls' Ministry thinking that it was a day to day devotional, with some sort of biblical application. I was wrong. It is a really small gift book. It is joy so muh a devotional but an encouraging note, an average of three sentences and a short Scripture. I was going to return it, but I used it as a birthday gift to a girl who was transitioning from
jr. High to high school youth groups. It has a to and from area to write a little dedication. It's a great gift for a young Christian, the description is misleading. ... Read more

Product Description

Thomas Lynley is called back to Scotland Yard when the body of a woman is found stabbed and abandoned in an isolated London cemetery. His former team doesn't trust the leadership of their new department chief, Isabelle Ardery, but Lynley may be the sole person who can see beneath his superior officer's hard-as-nails exterior to a hidden—and possibly attractive—vulnerability.

While Lynley works in London, his former colleagues Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata follow the murder trail south to the New Forest, a beautiful and strange place where outsiders are not entirely welcome. What they don't know is that more than one dark secret lurks among the trees, and that their investigation will lead them to an outcome that is both tragic and shocking.

A multi-layered jigsaw puzzle of a story skillfully structured to keep readers guessing until the very end, This Body of Death is a magnificent achievement from a writer at the peak of her powers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, very flawed
I did enjoy this book.I even stayed up past 3:00am to finish it.

Things I liked:
The mystery was quite engaging. I love it when police procedures gradually flesh out the motives and suspects allowing the reader to feel a part of the process.I could almost, sort of, see where it was going but was just far enough in the dark for it to grip the whole way. It was a page-turner!

Barbara Havers was, as usual, a joy.I had a momentary fear that Acting Chief Supervisor Isabelle Ardery was going to actually clean her up and was glad that did not happen. Her interactions with her neighbors are always touching, though the little girl's precociousness doesn't quite ring true.

It was good to have Thomas Lynley back and interacting with the team though he seemed oddly impotent in his role.

Things I didn't like:
Because I do not typically seek out step by step descriptions of adolescents torturing toddlers, I found the "story within a story" long and overly graphic.Had I known the level of horrifying description, I would not have even read the book. Also I am not a fan of philosophical post-modernism and found the sociological commentary tedious and non-essential to the mystery.Heaven knows we all know that torturing toddlers is wrong and that the children who do so come from flawed backgrounds and are likely to suffer tormented lives themselves. So while this mini-plot was integral to the main mystery, its too long, almost titillating descriptions of the violence were both disgusting and distracting.

Thomas Lynely's attraction to Isabelle Ardery was incomprehensible.Historically he has been involved in challenging relationships with flawed, but likable women. He has been portrayed as flawed and likable.Isabelle's character is horribly and flawed and very unlikable.Elizabeth George did a wonderful job in capturing the inconsistency, paranoia, self-involvement and denial of a closet alcoholic. She was rude and overbearing. She treated her team with utter contempt, happily throwing them under the bus when asked to shoulder responsibility for her own errors.I think she would have blamed the late Mother Theresa if it would have saved her career. And Thomas Lynley is beguiled by her enough to cover up her lack of ethics? And she will be back?Yuck. I hope not.

However, if you can get past the copious, unhurried, graphic descriptions of toddler torture, it is a gripping read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this audio book
I'm a big Elizabeth George fan so am not sure how fair a critic I can be but I loved this book. The narrator was about 3 to 4 stars but the story carried the day (I got the book from Audible but I believe all audio copies are the same). This was typical Elizabeth George with Lynley back, so smart, so thoughtful still recovering.I could not put it down. Two seeming unconnected stories are told that eventually come together, it certainly kept me guessing. This book is loaded with so much going on yet nothing is wasted. Not a thriller but a mystery for anyone who loves puzzles and just watching how the pieces come together.

1-0 out of 5 stars The guy reading this book on CD has a dreadful voice
As someone who spends a lot of time in their car, I always enjoy listening to books on tape while driving.I like Elizabeth George's books, so I buy the book and read it, then listen to it on CD while on the move.I have many of her books on CD and have liked most of them."This Body of Death" on CD is a real disappointment. Her last two audio books, "What Came Before He Shot Her" and "With No One As Witness" were both excellent and I enjoyed listening to them.I am having a difficult time with the new one.The guy reading it has an annoying deep voice that fails to get me interested in what he is reading.I am only on the second CD and I am quite bored.I am not sure if I will even listen to the rest of it. - Of course, the book itself is not very good, as it plods along with a boring storyline, dreadful new DCS (hope she's gone soon), and still no hint about how Helen's murder is going to be resolved.I never liked Helen but Lynley loses some of his class without her.I am glad that I got this audio CD from my public library as it is not worth owning.I am sure that I will never listen to it again.I DO listen to her previous two books on tape all the time. They were great. They need to get whoever read WCBHSH to read ALL of her audio books. ...
