Product Description
Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was a Lebanese American of Assyrian descent, an artist, poet and writer. He was born Gibran Khalil Gibran in Lebanon (at the time a Syrian Province of the Ottoman Empire) and spent much of his productive life in the United States. While most of Gibran's early writings were in Syriac and Arabic, most of his work published after 1918 was in English. Gibran also took part in the New York Pen League, also known as the "immigrant poets" (al-mahjar), alongside other important Lebanese American authors such as Ameen Rihani ("the father of Lebanese American literature"), Mikhail Naimy and Elia Abu Madi. Gibran's best-known work is The Prophet, a book composed of 26 poetic essays, first written in English in 1923. The Prophet remains famous to this day, having been translated into more than 20 languages. Other works in English include: Spirits Rebellious, (1908), The Broken Wings (1912), A Tear and a Smile (1914), The Forerunner (1920), Sand and Foam (1926), Jesus the Son of Man (1928), The Earth Gods (1929), The Wanderer (1932) and The Garden of the Prophet (1933). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Gibran
Dr. Bushrui is the world's top Gibran scholar. He has done justice to Gibran like no other person in history with this thorough biography. He has succeeded in grasping the historical aspects of Gibran's life, and most importantly, the spiritual essence. I have had the luck and pleasure of hearing Dr. Bushrui speak in person and can say he is a truly amazing orator, poet, and scholar. He lived in Lebanon, like Gibran, and has taught at Universities such as Oxford. This mix of eastern and western culture is the pivotal attribute of anyone who desires to truly understand Gibran.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful presenter, Dr. Bushrui is captivating
Well, I have to admit I have just ordered the book. I haven't read it yet... What I want to share, though, are my impressions from a presentation of Dr. Suheil Bushrui I attended last night. Dr. Bushrui is a man who hasthe enormous talent to love and inspire. Truly, I envy his students. If thegoal of his lecture last night was to inspire more people to read thepoetry of Kahlil Gibran, he surely succeeded. He succeeded in sparkling myinterest in Arabic poetry and in partucular, the poetry of Kahlil Gibran.More importantly though, he succeeded in making me look at poetry as thepoint where the truth meets the heart, and at poetry as the path ofspirituality to building a world based upon unity in diversity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful love!
it is so touching to read Gibran's exchanges in this way. there is so much wisdom and love written out in these pages that you'll find beautiful revelations about life embedded in the loving exchange between these two beings.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sad and Passionate Story, and True
A love that was never to be, shared by two spirits who never had the chance to be together.

No review will do it justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty of the "Unintended" Book
Like any collection of letters by an author, "Love Letters" offers the reader an insight into Kahlil Gibran's private life.As letters, these were obviously never meant for publication, though the quality and subtlety of the language is remarkable. As such, Gibran's voice is even more intimate than usual.Any fan of his work will revel in this feeling of a shared confidence.

The letters range in scope from daily activities to artistic pursuits and interests, and have more of a feeling of intense partnership than romantic love.Arranged and titled simply by their date, one can watch, to some extent, the relationship between Gibran and Ziadah grow and deepen. This edition is beautifully presented, with appropriate biographical notes and a revealing introduction.

While I would not reccomend this as a person's first encounter with Gibran, it is certainly a worthwhile follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational work
Gibran's poetic mind sways even the most jaded and lovelorn of us.His artistry shines through in his descriptions of setting, real and imagined. The absence of May Ziadah's letters, I think, adds a level of intricacy to the book, allowing the reader to hear, in the tactile absence of her words, her very thoughts and feelings in the echo of Gibran's responses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be quiet, and listen as Gibran speaks.
I really enjoy visualizing Gibran's thoughts. That may be an abstract thing to say, but he is the best at painting such life-like pictures with his words and descriptions; his similies stroke the imagination; hissensitivity is uncommon.

I was somewhat disappointed that May's lettersto Kahlil were not included (her estate would not allow them to bepresented to the public). Without the benefit of seeing her letters, onemust fill in the gaps by trying to understand Kahlil's responses to herwritings. The advertisement of this book incorrectly states that herletters are included.

Nevertheless, I am pleased with the compilation, and recommend it to the serious student / fan of Kahlil Gibran. Find aquiet place to do your reading; only then can your appreciation bemaximized. ... Read more
