Product Description
In his third novel, Sky Gilbert explores the culture of AIDS, exploring the minds of those whose lives revolve around the virus, the gay men who are running scared, barebacking, taking toxic drugs and raising funds for others similarly afflicted. Is Kasper Klotz an unrepentant serial killer? Or is he redeemable? When he makes the mistake of purposely infecting a beautiful young Midwesterner, he's accused, like a handful of other HIV-positive men in North America, of assault and attempted murder. A woman obsessed with Ayn Rand and her ever-expanding waistline, makes the incarcerated Kasper her mission. A hilarious, politically incorrect rant, I Am Kasper Klotz is a medical-scientific mystery: a thriller about what makes the AIDS virus tick. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Sky Gilbert is loved by fans of his novels, plays, poetry, and columns; hated by the Toronto Sun and by some members of the gay community. His alter ego Jane, a drag queen, was charged with not wearing a seat belt in a cab, took the case to trial, and won: "The judge said I was a reasonable person." Gilbert's theatre, Buddies in Bad Times, was almost closed by The City of Toronto for sponsoring S/M workshops in 1990, and yet he was awarded the Pauline McGibbon Award for directing in 1985, has directed two plays at the Shaw Festival, and had his work performed across North America. The Religious Right has campaigned against him, yet some men argue that his work has changed their lives. So, what's Gilbert all about, what makes him tick? Is he a drag queen? An award-winning artist? A complete slut? Or, maybe, all three? Many are going to be angered by this book, many more will be entertained. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

This collection takes off from where Sky Gilbert's first volume of poetry concluded and begs the question: Has Sky Gilbert grown up?

Thankfully, the answer is no.

Like Digressions of a Naked Party Girl, Temptations of a Juvenile Deliquent does not represent a fine literary turn by a respected man of letters, nor is it an experiment in metaphor and metonymy ripe for exegesis and respect. Instead, it's a personal, confessional, hilarious, rant-filled thrill-ride -- where familiar streets are filled with gay boys, hookers, Key West sunshine, and movie stars. These are poems written on the run, between tricks, after orgies, and before that last cigarette at 4 in the morning. They are meant to be read: out loud, in bed, or simply as a tool for seduction. This dangerous book is recommended to minors, the inexperienced, the virginal, shut ins, and the sexually repressed, not University courses or best-seller lists anywhere.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Digressions of a Naked Party Girl is a wild collection of hysterical telegrams from the unfettered imagination of Sky Gilbert. There are no boundaries here: Sky tells all in poems that are personal, political, angry, and wickedly funny. Spanish drag queens, movie stars, one-night stands, cute anatomy students, and the inside of a despot's mind-these scarlet confessions turn the reader into an instant therapist, confidante, and voyeur. Eclectic, topical, and always more than a cultural barometer, stylistically these poems range from the intense, break-neck story-telling of his recent novel Guilty, to pure surrealist rant. An ode to President Clinton sits beside a meditation on the color green. Consume it, devour it: you won't put it down. ... Read more

Product Description
Cassidy is dead and Jack is guilty, that's for sure. But of what, exactly, we're not certain. This is a first novel, but more importantly it is an outrageous, hilarious, tangentially revealed story of guilt, sex, fame, God, murder, danger, suspicion, love and hate. Jack and Cassidy had great sex. In fact, Cassidy may have been Jack's ideal sex partner, which is of great importance when your life revolves around sex. But then Cassidy would do things to drive Jack mad, which certainly could be a motive for murder. Also, Jack is a big man, which gives him the physical means to overpower Cassidy. And they were together on the night that Cassidy was killed, which provided the opportunity. Then there's the fact that Jack has dreamed of killing Cassidy and is not feeling too surprised or even too terrible about his death. But did he do it? The novel details Jack's extreme guilt, his encounters with the police, and his life leading up to the murder -- including his feelings about God, coffee bars, scat, sexually unspontaneous fags, therapists who go crazy, his mother, bears, gay hypocrites, the horror of cheap wine at a dinner party, and fancy fags who work in the arts, among other things. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining comic-thriller for the adventurous reader
Sky Gilbert makes a very successful transition into narrative prose with his first novel, a comic-thriller. In true Gilbert fashion, the novel is outlandish and shocking, but suprisingly educational for those unfamiliar with the politico-sexual intricacies of the homosexual community. I'm certain in several years time, "Guilty" will emerge as a groundbreaking novel, as sure to instigate debate as it will entertain. ... Read more

Product Description

This fictional memoir of a reclusive American literary icon also functions as a how-to manual for meaningful critical engagement with the real world. A celebration of innocence, youth, and altruism, it is a true story of self-imposed exile beginning in the mid-1940s and spanning decades, delving deep into the five tortured relationships that shaped one writer's psycho-sexual history and detailing his bitter literary decline and withdrawal from public life.

5-0 out of 5 stars J.D. Salinger
I'm a big fan of New YorkI try and see a show there every few months. Well I happened to pick up a copy of Brother Dumb when I was cruising The Strand on a recent trip. I noticed the stripes on the coverwhich made it look like it was a book by J.D. Salinger. I dont know if people are aware this book is ABOUT J.D. Salinger. Now J.D. Salingers name is never mentioned in the book but its certainly supposed to be himall the clues are there. If you are interested in J.D. Salinger andif you like New York City (its a very New York/ New England book) you should pick up Brother Dumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salinger Surprise
This is a very weird book. I liked it...but I didn't like it too. It took me awhile to figure out that the book was about J.D. Salinger. I didn't know that much about J.D. Salinger, but the thing is, I think you can enjoy the book anyway -- even if you don't know that much about him. The guy is very cranky -- but in a funny way. I found it pretty fascinating, actually. And I looked up J.D. Salinger -- and a lot of what happens in the book really happened to him. Interesting. I would recommend you pick it up...for something different. ... Read more
