Product Description
Nobody knows more about the differences between the sexes than John Gray, Ph.D. He is the man America turns to for help in deciphering the myriad complexities men and women face daily in their interactions with each other. The author of nine bestsellers--includingthe history-making Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus--John Gray expands on the expert advice touched upon in his previous books and distills each message into a powerful, inspiring daily meditation in this newest volume.

There's no doubt about it: The relationship between men and women is extremely complex. We often forget just how different the sexes are, and become frustrated and confused by a loved one's behavior. Every day we need to be reminded of these differences and realize that it's okay to be different as long as we recognize and understand the behavior of the opposite sex. In Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus Book of Days,John Gray provides us with daily inspirations that lovingly and insightfully remind us of the contrasts between Mars and Venus, allowing us to solve conflicts in our relationships.

Each month is devoted to a single theme, with the daily meditations enlarging on the particular subject at hand. The topics correlate with the very traits of the month itself: January, an exhilarating time of new beginnings, inspires resolve and the desire to excel. In February, when we find ourselves deep in winter's grip and challenged by constant emotional upheaval, we seek reminders of the importance of commitment and the need for patience. May concentrates on such springtime issues as harmony and appreciation. The topics discussed are as diverse as relationships are.

Inside you'll find comforting and helpful advice on:

  • The true meaning of equality

  • Improving communication

  • Giving and receiving emotional support

  • The awakening of our inner qualities

  • Needing time alone

  • Keeping the passion alive

  • Reacting to stress

Whether you need the thoughtful reminders yourself or know a friend or loved one who will benefit from these beautiful reflections, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus Book of Days is a classic that no bookshelf should be without.

The Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus Book of Days contains 365 inspirations to remind you each day of the basic differences between men and women

Women love a man with a plan; men love a woman with a smile.

A woman is like a wave. When she feels loved, her self-esteem rises and falls like a wave in motion. When she is feeling really good, she will reach a peak, but then suddenly her mood may change and her wave crashes down. This crash is temporary. After she reaches bottom, her mood will shift suddenly, and she will again feel good about herself. Automatically, her wave begins to rise back up...By recognizing this pattern, a man doesn't take it personally. When he doesn't feel as if he is being blamed for her downs, he can be more supportive.

A rubber band is the perfect metaphor to understand the male intimacy cycle, which involves getting close, pulling away, and then getting close again...Most women are surprised to realize that even when a man loves a woman, periodically he needs to pull away before he can get closer. Men instinctively feel this urge to pull away. It is not a decision or a choice. It just happens. It is neither his fault nor her fault. It is a natural cycle.

Romance for women is when a man does things without her having to ask; romance for men is when a woman appreciates the things he does.

Showing interest is one of the most important secrets to opening a woman's heart.

A man is free to be the best he can be when he feels accepted just the way he is.

Women need to work on trusting, while men need to work on caring.Amazon.com Review
Drawing from his nine bestsellers, including Men Are from Mars, Women Arefrom Venus, John Gray has compiled 365 reminders, or"inspirations," designed to help you improve your relationship withyour significant other. Instead of focusing on where men and womencan reach common ground, Gray revels in the differences between thesexes and how men and women must recognize and understand thesecontrasts in order to solve conflicts and make relationshipsflourish.

The book is divided into 12 different themes--amongthem, "Needing Time Alone," "Keeping the Passion Alive," "Reacting toStress," and "Improving Communication." The Book of Days willbe most helpful to those who've read his earlier titles; terms thatGray has coined, such as "dodging," "ducking," "disarming," and"delivering," and many other catchphrases, will otherwise seemundefined. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Create the Relationship of Your Dreams One Day at a Time
"Every one of us can create the loving relationship we want, need, and deserve. If you believe that love exists for you, you'll find the power to manifest your dreams." ~ John Gray

If you have read most of John Gray's books (as I recently have) then you will recognize many of his main ideas in this book. Since it takes a lot of work to maintain a loving relationship, the daily readings are a reminder to make love and romance a priority. John Gray discusses unconditional love, sexuality, innate differences, communications styles, compatibility, common problems, romance, monogamy and polarity.

While most of the topics are perfect for anyone in a committed monogamous relationship, there are a few tips on dating. It did seem strange to read about dating and divorce in a book mostly about nurturing couples who are married and trying to make their marriage work.

Throughout this book John Gray keeps talking about "advanced relationship skills." Eventually he gets to a few explanations but it is better to read up on his ideas in Mars and Venus in the Bedroom: Guide to Lasting Romance and Passion, A.

One of the confusing issues discusses is how men shouldn't share feelings (Sept 3) but women should. A few pages later (Sept 22) there is a section about how women should encourage sharing. Which is it? Logic would seem to indicate that if someone has feelings to share they should be listened to with an added level of respect.

Sept 3 - "...if his feelings are hurt, or if he feels more emotionally needy, he should talk with men friends and not look to her primarily to support his need to talk and share feelings.

Sept 22 - "Men have a feminine side and from time to time need to share their thoughts and emotions to feel better. When this happens, a woman can easily shut a man down. All it takes is a few such experiences, and he will stop sharing what he needs to share."

One of the things I find interesting about John Gray's books is that he never seems to offer practical solutions like hiring a housekeeper or bringing home takeout. It seems like he mostly focuses on communication although some of the real issues could be solved quite easily if both partners stopped trying to do everything. As someone who cleans houses myself I can say that it makes couples especially happy to know that they can now spend time with each other since there is nothing left to clean or worry about. Why nag someone when you can just hire help?

While reading this book gives you some basic information, I can highly recommend reading the following books to fill in the pieces of the John Gray puzzle:

Why Mars and Venus Collide: Improving Relationships by Understanding How Men and Women Cope Differently with Stress

Mars and Venus Together Forever: A Practical Guide to Creating Lasting Intimacy

MEN ARE FROM MARS WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS

~The Rebecca Review
Cleaning by Day, Reading by Night

3-0 out of 5 stars Ohhhh boy...
Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. There is a lot of truth in it.
The book helps to understand how different we are, men need their 'caves' to escape and think, women need to talk, express their feeling and be romanced.

Without the romance, appreciation of one another any relationship is going to run out of passion.

The book says more of relationships and marriage, there is a lot of repeats of the same things. Not much on first dating or and start of a new relationship.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glad I didn't buy my own copy.
Very disappointing. I don't think the things mentioned in this book are so generically applicable. I read it for an hour and left it, unimpressed. It gives the feeling that the author has a specific male and female individual (or bunch of individuals) in mind, and carries on with that image.

4-0 out of 5 stars YOung marriages
Usually the first few chapter discourage me or encourage me to continue reading, I have in fact read on.I have seen many communication problem's in everyday life; people are misunderstanding the other other people aroundthem.Simple because they are only interested in theirself.I find thisbook a caluable asset to my relationships.I will be purchasing this bookfor my sister and brother in law. A wonderfull christmas gift for anyone ina relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful each day of the year.
I love this book. While his other books give a great overview, this one is wonderful because it is broken down into a little information each day. As I read, I am reminded of the changes I first made when I read, "MenAre From Mars..." and this book helps me to keep those changes in theforefront of my mind. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoyedand learned from, "Men are from Mars..." and the other books inthe series. ... Read more

Hayek on Liberty is a concise yet exhaustive and provocative study of this classic liberal philosopher. It examines the structure and impact of Hayek's system of ideas and locates his position within Western philosophy. Not available since the 1980s, this updated 3rd edition contains a a substantial new chapter in which Gray assesses how far the historical development of the last ten years can be deployed in a critique of Hayek's thought.Gray's reassessment is not only a provoking study of a classical philosopher; it is also a timely contribution to the debate over the future of conservatism. ... I have not read this book, but I just finished reading an academic paper written by Mr. Gray, whose subject is F.A. Hayek.Based on this paper alone, I recommend anything Mr. Gray writes. His analysis is subtle, comprehensive, penetrating, and unassuming. It is a pleasure learning from Mr. Gray. Here is a link, if this is permitted, to the paper I refer to above: http://www.econlib.org/library/Essays/LtrLbrty/gryHRC.html

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth more than a single read
The shear volume of work completed by Hayek over a publishing career that marked more than fifty years makes it quite difficult to grasp the interlocking system of ideas he advocated. Gray has done an exceptional job of synthesizing this work. He presents the philosophical roots of Hayek's thought, the unique 20th century context in which Hayek's ideas competed with others, and a magnificent critique that anyone interested in Hayek should study.

Essentially, Gray reduces Hayek's contribution to that of a critic of socialism. Hayek's assertion that socialized central planning was an "epistemological impossibility," while historically evident, provides an inadequate justification for the 19th century form of capitalism Hayek advocated. The post-communist 21st century must deal with competing capitalisms, not rigid centrally planned economies, and Gray considers Hayek inadequate on this score.

Gray believes that Hayek missed an essential aspect of free market capitalism, that is, the power of progress. Free markets demand change, even change for change's sake, and the metaphor of a "spontaneous social order" arising in some sort of social evolution is not adequate to provide support for the traditional values and institutions for which Hayek had regard. Personal autonomy will always present a danger to social cohesion. In Gray's view, the free market advocated by Hayek prefers the former to the latter.

To Gray this weakness in Hayek's thought is fatal, and I tend to agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best recreation of Hayek's thought available
Friedrich von Hayek has had perhaps the most profound impact of any political theorist in the last half-century.John Gray's book is a superb analysis of his ideas.Where other studies can be confusing or convoluted,Gray's always maintains its ability to lucidly recreate Hayek's argumentsfrom their intellectual roots upwards.

Understanding theintellectual foundations of Hayek's work, can be a minefield ofinaccessible terms and confusing statements. Thanks to JohnGray, however, these matters are clearly and intelligently explained. The resultis that the reader is provided with a rich insight into how Hayek'spolitical economy functions.More than just a critique of socialism,Hayek's thought is also a profound intellectual statement combining theepistemological insights of Hume with Kant's categorical imperative.Anunderstanding of its philosophical basis allows a fertile gaze into theprism that is Hayek's thought.Only Gray explains these aspects of hiswritngs clearly.

"Hayek on Liberty" is, moreover, refreshingly objective, despite the controversy which Hayek's ideasgenerate.Gray seeks to explain rather than to refute or praise.Thereader can therefore take the insights Gray offers in a number ofdirections.Although Gray clearly admires Hayek, he does not feel the needto indulge in the monotonous hero-worship to which we have becomeaccustomed. There is much to be found here for Hayek's critics too. Especially since it is doubtful that Hayek's use of Hume does not underminemany of his more positive political statements.

Gray's work is thusan invaluable guide to one of the Twentieth Century's intellectual icons. One only has to observe the saint-like worship Hayek has received in recentmonths, surrounding the centenery of his birth, to appreciate that hislegacy is an ongoing phenomenon of global proportions.Academic, student, and interested observer will find Gray's study immensely helpful as aplatform for approaching more general disussions of Hayek's ideas, of whichmany fine examples now exist.Anyone attempting a detailed appreciation ofHayek should thus keep Gray beside them at all times. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Study of I and 2 Kings
Everyone approaches the Bible with a bias:Either it is a supernatural book with many authors who ultimately were verbally inspired by God to write accurate truth, or it is a collection of more or less historical events combined with legends, myths, and editorial comments by a variety of writers and editors. John Gray takes the latter position. One quickly gets the impression that Gray has written more to impress fellow scholars than to be helpful to the modern exegete.

Do not expect him to be useful in difficult passages; he simply dismisses them as "saga," acknowledging grudgingly that "There may well be a nucleus of historical fact" in the stories about Elijah, for instance (p. 459). In other cases, where you are looking for an explanation (see 2 Kings 14:9), Gray offers no help at all--merely stating, "The point of this. . . needs no elaboration."!

And then, there is the matter of his obfuscatory style. Here is a not atypical sentence: "The reason for this sudden expansive treatment of what may only be a single phase in the reign of Hezekiah in the Deuteronomistic History lies mainly in the subject matter, the themes of the inviolability of Zion, the site of the Temple and throne of the divine king, a doctrine developed in the liturgy of the New Year festival during the monarchy, which was maintained by the Deuteronomistic compiler, and that of prophecy and fulfilment (see Introduction, pp. 11-13) in the tradition which associated Isaiah with this crisis." Yes, that was one sentence.
The verdict: Skip this book and find a more helpful commentary, such as one by Paul R. House or Russell H. Dilday.

3-0 out of 5 stars Past its "Best by" date
When this book was first published in 1963, it was excellent. It has been quoted frequently by subsequent writers and has achieved almost classic status. However, it is now showing its age, especially with regard to archaeology. The new two-volume commentary (vol 1 by Cogan, 2001; vol 2, Cogan & Tadmor 1988 - yes, it came out first) has superseded it.While it is still worth reading, especially for its insights into sources, it is now not the first choice commentary. ... Product Description
In this book John Gray argues that we live in a time of endings for the ideologies that governed the modern period. The Enlightenment projects of universal emancipation animates all the political doctrines and movements that are central in contemporary western societies. Yet it does not reflect the reality of the plural world in which we live. The western cultural hegemony which the Enlightenment embodied is coming to a close. Western liberal societies are not precursors of a universal civilization, but only one form of life among many in the late modern world.

Our inherited stock of political ideas no longer tracks that world. The crisis of New Right thought is as profound as that of the Left. Green theorists and communitarian thinkers have not understood the deep diversity and intractable conflicts of contemporary societies. And postmodernists, whose thought is ruled by the dated utopias of the modern period, do not engage with the real conditions of the world's emerging postmodern societies. Late modern thought occurs in an interregnum between modern projects that are no longer credible and postmodern realities that many find intolerable.

John Gray suggests that some Enlightenment hopes of progress must be extinguished if we are to learn to respect cultural diversity and accept ecological limits. Respect for the Earth and for other species and cultures means abandoning the utopian and arcadian projects that haunt modern thought. We should aim to moderate the impact of human activity on the Earth while alleviating the unavoidable evils of human life. Yet the hubris which treats the Earth as an instrument of human purposes, and which regards other cultures as approximations to a universal civilization, embodies ancient and powerful traditions. John Gray's aim is to question these traditions and thereby to prepare our thinking for a time of beginnings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars moving beyond postmodernism...
Finally a way of looking at things that gets free of the muck of postmodernism.

In the last chapter of the book aptly titled "Beginnings" the author notes--

"The beginnings of the world after the close of the modern age can already be discerned. We see them emerging from the shadows of modernity's failed projects. Yet these beginnings come to us obscured by traces of the past, one of which is postmodernism. The principal effect of postmodernist thinking has been to cloud our vision as we pass through the closure of the modern period. Most such thinking makes no effort to theorize the present. It is animated by aspects of the central western intellectual tradition that are least useful, and indeed most dangerous, for us. One of these is universalism - the metaphysical faith that local western values are authoritative for all cultures and peoples. This western faith was expressed in the Socratic project of the examined life, in the Christian commitment to a redemption for all humankind, and in the Enlightenment project of progress towards a universal human civilization. It is foundational in the central intellectual tradition of 'western' societies - a tradition that is renewed in the postmodernist project of deconstructing cultures everywhere. In supposing that a postmodern condition is the historical fate of all societies, postmodernists cling to a westernizing narrative of modernity The truth is that the fracturing of worldview that typifies late modern western societies presupposes a deep-seated cultural commitment to universal truth. In societies that have never harboured such a commitment, such as Japan, perspectivism is not a manifestation of cultural crisis. It is a natural way of looking at the world. Equally, it is only in decaying universalist regimes, such as the United States, that 'relativism' becomes an incurable local malady. Postmodernist thinking prevents us from seeing that modernity is an incident in one or a few histories, not in an illusive universal history."

Yes, and now China emerges as paradigmatic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite C++ book!
I was looking if there is probably a newer edition of this book and couldn't help writing a review about this one. I bought this book back in 1996 while I was visiting a beginner's course in C++ and data structures during my BS studies. The main reason why I bought it was because it is a relatively thin book (about 300 pages) which was very attractive since I wanted to learn the basics only, and quick! This book has almost no diagrams, no colored text and none of the pedagogical structuring which we see so often in other tutorial books. And, believe it or not, this is what makes this book so clear to understand. The chapters are short and well-written. There are lines of C++ code on almost every page. Nothing is explained without some sample code. I've been programming with Java for a long time and I am refreshing my C++ knowledge these days. I don't even think about looking into any other book before I've re-read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the besttext on the subject

Product Description

At the heart of human experience lies an obsession with the nature of death. Religion, for most of history, has provided an explanation for human life and a vision of what comes after it. But in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such beliefs came under relentless pressure as new ideas—from psychiatry to evolution to communism—seemed to suggest that our fate was now in our own hands: humans could cease to be animals, defeat death, and become immortal.

The acclaimed political philosopher and critic John Gray takes a brilliant and frightening look at humankind’s dangerous striving toward a scientific version of immortality. Probing the parallel faiths of Bolshevik “God-builders” who sought to reshape the planet and psychical researchers who believed they had evidence of a nonreligious form of life after death, Gray raises fascinating questions about how such beliefs threaten the very nature of what it means to be human. He looks to philosophers, journalists, politicians, charlatans, and mass murderers who all felt driven by a specifically scientific and modern worldview and whose revolt against death resulted in a series of experiments that ravaged whole countries.

A chilling yet crucial look at Darwin’s post-religious legacy, The Immortalization Commission is an important work from “one of Britain’s leading public intellectuals” (The Wall Street Journal).

Post-Liberalism gives post-liberal theory a definitive content. John Gray considers particular thinkers in the history of political thought, criticizes conventional wisdom--both liberal and socialist--of the Western academic class, and outlines what remains of value in liberalism. His argument states that we should not regret the failure of foundationalist liberalism, since we have all we need in the historic inheritance of the institutions of civil society. He argues that attention should be focused on the practice of liberty that these institutions encompass, rather than on ... Read more

Product Description
One of the great figures in history, Sir Isaac Newton personifies the triumph of scientific reason over ignorance.Yet for all his contributions to the Enlightenment, Newton was a deeply complex man who sometimes aggressively tried to obscure the intellectual achievements of others of others.

Newton's Tyranny is the story of two men who felt the full wrath of the great man's hostility-the Reverend John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, and Stephen Gray, a humble dyer and amateur scientist.United not only by a love of science, but by a bitter and protracted conflict with Newton, the two men made significant contributions to science despite the observational astronomy and navigation.

Drawing upon letters and historical documents, Newton's Tyranny vividly recreates the British scientific community of the early 18th century. It was an era of great achievement, but the crucible of science was often heated by Machiavellian intrigue, uncontrollable ambition, and larger-than-life personalities.Against this dramatic setting, the saga of Newton, Flamsteed and Gray unfolds, a story of loyalty and commitment against great odds.

A fascinating look at a forgotten piece of science history, Newton's Tyranny exposes the dark side of flawed genius while celebrating the ultimate triumph of two unsung heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely written, and interesting to read
This is a quick read that is both well-written and well-organized. The authors take few diversions - historical, rhetorical, or empirical - from describing the relations among the characters in the title: the credentialed Newton, the laborious Gray, and the intermediary Flamsteed. The result is a concise and enjoyable report on what is known and what can be reasonably surmised about the relative contributions of these men. There is sufficient detail (and sufficient lack of colouring) to make the book of interest to scientists, and to historians and sociologists of science. But there the book is sufficiently accessibile, and the subject matter sufficiently finite to make it equally appealing to anyone with interest in such topics as politics, organizations, and astronomy, not to mention Newton and his era.

4-0 out of 5 stars The darker side of a great scientific mind
The Clarks make no bones about it:Sir Issac Newton was one of the greatest scientific minds of the his time.Of all time, in fact.Newton was the symbol of the triumph of science over superstition.

But Newton had a darker side.Despite the fame and recognition he had received, Newton refused to let anyone threaten to overshadow him or stand in his way of greater achievements.

Reverend John Flamsteed was the first Astronomer Royal - a position he held for 44 years serving under 6 kings. He spent his night in the observatory of Greenwich gazing through telescopes, cataloguing the stars.Newton wanted this information to figure out a better way to navigate to oceans, a major problem in his day.He was convinced Flamsteed was holding back the critical information he needed. For that, Newton used all the considerable power at his disposal to end the career of Flamseed. He almost suceeded. It was only because of the dedication of Flamsteed's widow that his 3-volumn Historia Coelestis Britannica was published.

Today, because of Flamsteed's work, we measure longitude from the place he accomlished his work - Greenwich.

The work of Stephen Gray is less known.A commoner trained as a dyer, he was a most unlikely member of the Royal Society.

Gray was a long time friend of Flamsteed. He carried on a regular coorespondence with the elder scientist, sharing with him his own celestial observations.

But it was Gray's pioneering work in using electricity for communications that earned him immortality.Work, that if not for Newton, may have been accomplished 20 years sooner. ... Read more
