5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most perfect poems in the English language!
Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," is one of the most perfect poems in the English language. This
elegy, unlike the very lengthy but beautiful one by Tennyson, is very poetical, mournful, and perhaps a bit melancholy.
Even though Gray was before the romantic times, his poetry is very much befitting and more inclined in that direction.
His thoughts are expressed lucidly and soberly. He was one of eight; however, the siblings of Gray never ran to, "lisp
their sire's return, or climb[ed] his knee the envied kiss to share."

Gray was not born into a poor home, nor extremely wealthy either. Yet in spite of his father being somewhat "rude", he
managed to go on to eventually become a professour. He was is own worst critic. He scarcely suffered a dozen of his works
to be published.

The Elegy took eight or nine years to complete. That kind of work, critically, and meticulously done paid off. The finished
work is superb. There are things that Gray brings up in this piece that have a stirring effect upon me, and especially the
way in which he words himself is very gripping. The opening lines are slow, which fit the overall mood--that being death.

One can nearly see the sunset/twilight time. They can nearly hear the curfew bells ringing in a distance off, likened unto
knells (bells rung at funerals), and can hear the tinkling of sheep and cow bells, as the hamlet folk return home for the
evening. The work day is over, the sounds of night is all that is left, save one meditating poet in the Churchyard of
Stoke Poages England. You can nearly hear the sounds the poet describes, and the vivid colours in his painting. It is like
a tapestry of light and shade.

If you like poems, especially ones that are unique and of antiquity, consider, pray, Thomas Gray's works. You may even be
challenged, as I was by this poem, to think soberly about life and eternity: Death and Life. Intricately, picturesquely,
and beautifully told, this is one great work: "An Elegy Wrote in a Country Churchyard." Strongly recommend this set of Gray's
humble, but lovely works! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Gray come to life
Well, as close as you can get for this member of the 'Graveyard School' of poetry. Very well written and engaging book. Richly detailed in the history and atmosphere of the eighteenth century. All of Gray's (rather short) body of work is touched upon from early translations to his stiching together of lines from other poets (forerunner of William Burroughs cut-up method) to the classic 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard'.This book is not a dry read as it reliesextensively on the use of the letters of Gray and Horace Walpole among others. Extremely well researched by Mr. Mack. I enjoyed this highly readable book from start to finish and recommended it to anyone with an interest in the "Graveyard School" of poetry or the eighteenth century in general. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some love this world, at least the few really good bits.
Perhaps life is a bit stressful at times. This little book, with wit and pith and love, and nearly enough fine line drawings, reminds us some people survive, very nicely, thank you, for quite some time, on something a bit more sustaining than getting ahead of the Joneses, or your own Joneses, whatever. Thomas Gray is one of the greatest heroines in history. Not many know why, instinctively, but, we may learn. A pleasant read, it will give you something to remember as heroic, should you ever doubt such a thing could ever exist. These harsh times are not without precedent, but, not everyone is dead, just yet. Perhaps everyone else on your battlefield, but, please, allow one survivor to find a way beyond that noble and terrible place. They are not as rare as one might imagine. Nor as evil as one might assume. A cat may explain things we find beyond our understanding. There are moments of joy and acceptance, in this fine, if unimposing, little book. And in this imposing, if not all fine, huge world. Go see for yourself. Uh, don't bother with reading the last chapter first, it is not that sort of clever. I have not written this review to become Famous, only because this book is good. Yes, that good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tale of a Cambridge Cat
Philip J. Davis, the author, is Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. In the mid 1980s, he was briefly a Visitor at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where his (fictional) tale is set.

I recommend the book highly. It provides great insight into the traditional methods of study and reflection used within Cambridge colleges, and Thomas Gray the cat is a most engaging fulcrum who effortlessly imposes her (that's right!) personality upon the direction matters take.Philosophy, history, love and mathematics all come together in a Cambridge environment where the landscapes are as lovingly described as the abstract ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming and clever
It's a pity this is out of print, because it's a great read. Very intelligently written with an expectation that the reader is at least fairly well-versed in literature and other scholarly pursuits, it is nevertheless not at all dry or difficult to get through. A lovely story about an eccentric professor and his cat, Thomas Gray, it is an engrossing and thought-provoking read with a great touch of humour to its style. As someone who loves both books and cats, I can recommend this highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Museful Storytelling with Academic Wit and Charm
If you like academic wit and charm, and think you might enjoy a fanciful story about a cat named "Thomas" and *her* friend Lucas, both of whom ponder questions mathematical, philosophical, practical, and romantic, then this book is for you.Else, I'm not sure. You might get happily lost in the writing, or you might ask, "what in bloody blazes is this all about?" on page five. But as for me, I enjoyed every bit--even the parts I didn't understand. Marguerite Dorian's illustrations are *wonderful*. Another good and comparable work by Davis is _The Thread_ (which does not appear available on Amazon, but ought be). ... Read more

Product Description
Thomas Merton was Roman Catholic and a member of one of Catholicism's strictest monastic orders. Nonetheless, throughout his religious life one sees the remarkable influence of Christian traditions best preserved within the Eastern Orthodox Church: iconography, the Jesus Prayer, and the apophatic spiritual path linked with Mt. Athos and Sinai. He treasured the sayings and stories of the Desert Fathers and was familiar with the Philokalia.

Merton and Hesychasm: The Prayer of the Heart collects all of Merton's writing on topics in Eastern Christianity. He studied and published on the writings that emanated from the Greek and Russian Orthodox traditions, both in the early centuries of the Church and during revival of the monastic traditions of Orthodoxy on Mount Athos during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

His writing on Hesychasm, the practices surrounding the "Prayer of Jesus" that have as their aim preparing the spiritual seeker for union with the Godhead, are of particular contemporary importance. Western seekers have looked to Buddhism and the East for a thoroughly psychological and spiritual method of meditation. But, in fact, a Christian tradition, just as analytic and developed and more culturally palatable to the West, exists and is readily available.

Merton's commentary is accompanied by major new essays by scholars in the fields of Eastern Christianity and Merton studies: Bishop Kallistos Ware, Father Donald Allchin of England, and James Forest of the U.S. and Holland, among others. Both Allchin and Forest knew Merton personally and bring salient details of his interest in the Christian East together with a view of the man and his writing.

Merton and Hesychasm: The Prayer of the Heart is the second in a multi-volume series that exposes Thomas Merton's dialogues with traditions other than his own. The first volume, Merton and Sufism: The Untold Story, has met with critical success and found a wide audience among those interested in Merton, arguably one of the twentieth-century's top writers in the field of religion and spirituality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem for deeper prayer life
This is one of the best books for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Eastern Orthodox approach to reality, the Holy Trinity, and themselves, along with the strong connection to the life and writings of Thomas Merton. The contributors to this fine collection include Bishop Kallistos Ware, James Cutsinger, A.M. Allchin, Rowan Williams and many many other fine writers on the spiritual life. In fact, "The Power of the Name", the not too easy to find introduction to the Jesus Prayer by Bishop Kallistos Ware, is included as a chapter, alone worth the modest price of this thick book.

This is also an excellent introduction to Thomas Merton and his connection to the fathers from the East.

This is one of the best books on the subject around! Amazingly detailed.

Contents of some of the chapters:
1. How do we enter the heart? Kallistos Ware
2. Silence in prayer: the meaning of hesychia Ware
3. The power of the Name Ware
4. The Ladder of divine ascent: the yoga of hesychism Custinger
5. A sufic perspec6tive on St. Seraphim of Sarov Gary Henry
6. Merton and the eastern fathers: the worship of the whole creation Allchin
7. Our lives, a powerful Pentecost: Merton and Russian spirituality Allchin
8. Merton and the Xpian East
9. Merton and Icons Jim Forest
10. Merton and Evdokimov

PLUS 21 other chapters, all of strong erudition and scholarship. Very nourishing for mind and soul.
