Product Description

One of the myths about families in inner-city neighborhoods is that they are characterized by poor parenting. Sociologist Frank Furstenberg and his colleagues explode this and other misconceptions about success, parenting, and socioeconomic advantage in Managing to Make It. This unique study—the first in the MacArthur Foundation Studies on Successful Adolescent Development series—focuses on how and why youth are able to overcome social disadvantages.
Based on nearly 500 interviews and case studies of families in inner-city Philadelphia, Managing to Make It lays out in detail the creative means parents use to manage risks and opportunities in their communities. More importantly, it also depicts the strategies parents develop to steer their children away from risk and toward resources that foster positive development and lead to success.

4-0 out of 5 stars D. H. Lawrence scholar satisfied
Book was as advertised and arrived promptly. I only wish it had been a bit cheaper.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult introduction
I have just finished reading this book and to be honest I found it quite tough going.Recommended to me by an academic of Lawrence's work, he had to concede afterwards that perhaps it wasn't the ideal introduction to a new reader. What this story lacks mostly is a good old fashioned yarn, but instead seems to be a vehicle for the author to convey many of his thoughts on relationships between men and men, men and women and politics in general.

I can't be too specific on the authors ideas as I freely admit that much of this went "in one ear and out the other" as I frequently found after reading certain paragraphs I was left thinking "I have no idea what he was just talking about".Concentration therefore was fundamental to enjoying this book, and on the few occasions when I was truely focussed and emmersed, some of the ideas were interesting and rewarding.

This is a semi autobiographical account of Lawrence's own experiences in Australia, but strangly I found the most interesting part of the book was the "Nightmare" chapter, dedicated to the character's account of being in England during World War One.This too, mirrors the authors own experiences during this turbulent time.

Maybe I should go for the better known novels next time...

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful perceptive and complex insight into Australia
Tnis was the book that made me realize just how clever Lawrence was.His spiritual and analytical insight into the nature of a bastardized and inconquerable continent is just breathtaking, and it truly is a work of asupremely sensitive and perceptive individual.

Lawrence explores suchdepths that there are sometimes sinister truths and realizations thaterupts from Lawrences mind, in the guise of the main character. This is ahaunting and sad book, that pulls your mind completely into the wonder ofLawrences intellectual capacity and genius for seeing the imperciptible, where so many fail to.I love you Lorenzo, thank goodness for your genius. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent
This is the second time I bought the same book from Stamatis.
The first one I gave to one friend. He push me do give it as a gift.
This second edition is far better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money...
While the material discussed is ok, I found it hard to justify the cost of the book. There seemed to be much redundancy in the book as well.It would have been wonderful if the author had finished what he wanted to say in half as many pages. As a seminar leader, instructor, and practitioner, I find it hard to recommend

2-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but repetitive
Stamatis has written the most comprehensive reference available on FMEA.However, much of the information in the book is repeated multiple times. The book does not contain much theory on FMEA and does not include the history of FMEA.

This book does not serve as a good introduction to FMEA--Stamatis seems to assume that the reader already has a solid understanding of FMEA.If you want a helpful introduction to FMEA, I suggest you buy The Basics of FMEA by McDermott, Mikulak, and Beauregard.

The book consists of 13 chapters. The first chapter covers the legal approach to liability.Chapter 2 provides a general overview of FMEA.Chapter 3 is a glossary of terms.Chapter 4 talks about how teams use FMEA.Stamatis asserts that there are four types of FMEA: system, design, process, and service and these types are covered in the next four chapters.Stamatis also includes chapters on the use of FMEA in these industries: electromechanical, computers, semiconductors, and medical devices. The remaining chapter discusses ISO 9000.

This book might have been twice as helpful if it had been half as long.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and practical tool
Understand is the key for a successful world class strategy. Inside youworld class strategy you need know all about your equipments, process andsystems failure modes, this is a useful and practical tool. This books give us several forms, checklists, and sample guidelines, caseexamples, and a very interesting summary of mathematical formulae and toolsused in FMEA.

By other hand, this book includes the ISO 9000 qualitystandards, and the legal need for FMEA,and have apractical approach toservices industries and electromechanical, computer, and medical deviceindustries. ... Read more

Product Description
This magisterial work, long awaited and long the subject of passionate speculation, is an unprecedented exploration of modern poetry and poetics by one of America's most acclaimed and influential postwar poets. What began in 1959 as a simple homage to the modernist poet H.D. developed into an expansive and unique quest to arrive at a poetics that would fuel Duncan's great work in the 1970s A meditation on both the roots of modernism and its manifestation in the work of H.D., Ezra Pound, D.H. Lawrence, William Carlos Williams, Edith Sitwell, and many others, Duncan's wide-ranging book is especially notable for its illumination of the role women played in creation of literary modernism. Until now, The H.D. Book existed only in mostly out-of-print little magazines in which its chapters first appeared. Now, for the first time published in its entirety, as its author intended, this monumental work--at once an encyclopedia of modernism, a reinterpretation of its key players and texts, and a record of Duncan's quest toward a new poetics--is at last complete and available to a wide audience. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Milton Erickson is always fascinating
Milton Erickson is always worth reading about. His approach to psychotherapy is original, effective, sensible and fun.He studied the conventional methods, but he didn't use them.He used his own methods, and did so masterfully.

One of the most refreshing things about him is that he tossed the usual routine in the garbage. You won't find him sitting in a chair next to his patient who is babbling on and on about childhood and parents.Erickson didn't dwell on the past, which makes him unique in his field.

Erickson looked for solutions in the present, and found them. His patients often presented very extreme, very pathetic problems. He tackled them head on.In this book you will see how he succeeded, in his very practical and imaginative way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative

Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to gain a basic understanding of how hypnosis works.

This is a great book for anyone who has been influenced unconsciously by this type of hypnosis. Particularly for those who have been involved with a cult leader or guru (Byron Katie, for example) who uses these methods to bypass their victims conscious mind and rational thought, in order to influence and control their behavior, thoughts, etc. This book is non-technical and non-specific enough to help victims of mind control identify methods used to persuade them, and to take control of their own lives again.

Very interesting and enlightening read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Milton Erickson, Where are you now that I need you?
Extremely interesting portrait of Milton Erickson highlighted by many case studies that are fascinating. Very informative and enjoyable. For those of you who have an interest in psychology and are tired of reading variations of the same idea, give Dr. Erickson a shot. His methods at times are hilarious, yet effective. Entertaining, informative, enlightening. I hope he takes my insurance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book
Uncommon Therapy is a good survey of Dr. Milton Erickson's approach to therapy. The book consists of stories from Erickson's case files along with an explanation of the approach that Erickson took. This book is potentially useful for anyone who has problems and wishes to solve them as the techniques could be applied on a personal level. The people who should be interested in reading this book are the professionals who wish vary their and customize their approach to their patients.

My interest in the book was to find out more about Erickson and his therapeutic techniques that I could apply in my own life. It succeeded in satisfying both my aims. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Roots Of Cognitive Therapy Still Relevant
Uncommon Therapy is an introduction to the therapy work of famed Medical Hypnotist Milton Erickson. It is more readable than many of Erickson's writings.Haley also adds some of his perspective to the art of therapy.
This book and others like it were written before Cognitive Behavioral Therapy became the dominant therapy in Psychology. They can still contribute insights to therapists seeking a broad background for practicing psychotherapy.
Graduate students and therapists in research settings should definitely read this book to help keep alive a more comprehensive approach to cognitive therapy than is promoted by formulaic cognitive and behavioral therapies that were largely forced on Clinicians by insurance companies pushing science-based, effective therapies;a good outcome for most consumers seeking psychotherapy in most settings.
Haley, using a family life cycle approach (e.g. courtship, weaning parents from children, the pain of old age) uses Erickson's case studies to illustrate Erickson's approach. Nowadays it comes across as proof by anecdote.Experienced therapist do however, have examples of cases that were resolved quickly when the client restructured his/her view,
Erickson's approach contibutes best by showing how a therapist can creatively propose an alternative constuction ofa problem posed by the client and by inventing strategies for change. Erickson's own writings have many more detailed examples of cases.

4-0 out of 5 stars A FUNDAMENTAL CONTRIBUTION
THIS PUBLICATION IS OF FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE FOR THOSE WORKING IN AQUATIC BIOLOGY. IN THIS BOOK IS EASY TO FIND INFORMATION ON ECOLOGY AND AND SYSTEMATICS OF FRESHWATER ALGAE. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT COLOR PAGES ARE NOT PRESENT PARTICULARLY OF MICROSCOPIC ALGAE FOR IDENTIFICATION ANALYSES. HOWEVER, THE PUBLICATION IS VERY HELPFUL IN PRELIMINARY IDENTIFICATION.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNA EXCELENTE RECOPILACIÓN

5-0 out of 5 stars algae reference
This book is a must for the reference library or for the laboratory of pesons who study algae or microscopic aquatic organisms. While it does not substitute for the collective contributions of other scientists over time, it is a great first stop for those who are interested in these organisms. For many there will be no need to search further.
The book is organized in a conventional manner with major groups treated in separate chapters. It is easy to use and well-illustrated. It will find a home with scientists, students, and interested lay persons alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Updating of Smith
It has been over 50 years since the last edition (1950) of Smith's "Freshwater Algae of the United States" and much has changed in our knowledge of the classification of the "Algae".These are now known to contain several quite different organisms from Euglena to Chara and from diatoms to desmids and Spirogyra. The flora is huge and often poorly known. Thus it was with some enthusiasm that I welcomed the publication of this massive tome.A much-needed updating of Smith's classic book and more, it contains numerous black and white photos and drawings, plus extensive bibliographies for each chapter. I also much appreciate the keys, having been involved in writing several for spider genera. The only down side is the rather high price, which is quite a bit more than its companion volume on freshwater invertebrates.

I don't fault this book for lack of color because that might have easily made it even more expensive. If you want to see color photos of algae, and indeed very good ones, try "Freshwater Algae: Their Microscopic World Explored" by Hilda Canter-Lund and her husband J. W. Lund.

Despite the cost, I recommend this book as essential for anyone trying to understand the North American freshwater algal flora.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did he have sex or explosive diarrhea?
I usually save two stars for books that I feel have isses with the plot or weak characters, etc. I don't feel that this book had any issues except I found most of it completely boring. It made me want to beat my forhead against things and rock back and forth like Rain Man in an attempt to pay attention to the story. Guess too fancy and historical for my ADHD brain.

I picked this book in honor of Banned Book Week so I felt guilty to not finish it, like if I stop somewhere some evil people will start squishing little mewlling kittens and mail me their little furry bodies in a box with a letter saying, "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT...YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS BUT NOOOOOO."

I didn't give up on LCL, it kind of read like waves in the ocean. It started off dull, and then it got interesting for a while, then down and back goes the wave of interest. I can understand the reasoning for banning it, all those challenging thoughts on pretty much everything including the certainty and necessity of the Iron Age...but there is a gianormous amount of whininess that is barely tolerable.

It's very comical to read the description of the sex scenes. First there was the lover that got mad at her for that he had to wait and hold still after he came so she could get off, like it was all her fault. Then her grounds keeper lover's sexual attraction to her was said as "his bowels stirred for her" and his cumming described as an "evacuating crisis"...which kind of sounds like the guy had explosive diarrhea, not sex. Yeah, that's sexy, lol.

2-0 out of 5 stars Famous because it was banned
I picked this book up in honor of banned book week.It seems to me that this book gained more notoriety off the fact that it was banned than because it was a great piece of literature.I had to keep reminding myself that it was set in the 1920s, as the writing style was more reminiscent of a Victorian era novel.Furthermore, Lawrence portrayed his characters as if they were in the Victorian era.The characters were not well developed, thus making it hard to have sympathy for anyone in the story. The end was disappointing as it simply fizzled away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence. Published by MobileReference (mobi)

Dealing with themes of love, passion, respect, honor, and the need for understanding, Lady Chatterley's Lover is a complex, character-driven novel which celebrates the driving passions that can make life worth living.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lady Chatterly
Lady Chatterly's Lover was not the perverted, illiterate story I was lead to believe it was. It was a story of classes and self realization. It was thoughtfully written, though it did drag in many parts.Yes, there are many sexual liasons in the story, but I think the author's intent was to make them part of the natural flow of the story instead of a suggestion. In saying that, it was quite evident the love scenes were written by a man.Mostly very mechanical in description and very cut and dry.A female author would have elongated the love scenes and added a bit more detail.Although the focus of the book has always been the sex scenhes, there is more substance to it than that

5-0 out of 5 stars Not shocking anymore, but dang good

A 'Novel' Guest Review By Leigh Wood

After one too many viewing's of the 1992 BBC production of Lady Chatterley, I finally broke down and read the book. I thought the 1928 unedited version of Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence would be a tough book to find. Expensive, rare, old leather, smelly, buried in an antiquarian store-that type of book. Indeed I was very pleased to find the 1928 Unexpurgated Oriali Edition in paperback at my local Borders. $4.95!

I wrapped Mists of Avalon as quickly as possible and avoided watching the film before I plunged into Lover. I read other writers' criticisms on D.H. Lawrence and his works before purchasing the book, and I knew the book and movie didn't have the same ending. Of course, I also knew the book's controversial reputation and supposedly salacious use of naughty words and torrid sex talk. My edition opened with forwards and introductions detailing the book's tough road to publication and the aftermath of censorship. Although this story is fairly well known in literary circles, this introduction is informative, with details and facts on the books printing, pirated editions, and trial information. Even if one was a toe towards prudish, you can't not be interested in reading Lady Chatterley's Lover after these words of praise.

Although the 1992 adaptation by Ken Russell is quite faithful, Lawrence's work is naturally bigger and more detailed than what can be translated to the screen. I noticed many cases where the film had taken word for word from the book, and also where scenes had been combined or moved and relocated for the film. Still, much was remaining to surprise me. After her Baronet husband's paralysis during World War I, young Constance Chatterley begins to question her mundane existence as Lady of Wragby Hall and nursemaid to her crippled husband. They are educated and literate, but as she listens to her husband and his friends chit chat about war, sex, society, and money, Connie becomes more and more disenchanted with her upper class standing. After a very dissatisfying affair with playwright Michaelis, Connie begins a saucy love affair with her husband's gamekeeper Olivier Mellors. Despite the fear of being caught and societal pressures upon them, Connie and Mellors continue to meet. When the scandal comes out, they take measures to secure a life together, despite the class divisions against them.

The great part of Lady Chatterley's Lover is the love discovered between the titular characters, so I was intrigued by the intitial Michaelis relationship. We learn much about Connie intellectually and sexually through this affair, internal thoughts and disappointing feelings that can't be show onscreen. I've read other fans commentaries online about Joely Richardson's performance as Lady Chatterley in the BBC version. Women sometimes find her portrayal conceded and flaky. Connie has nothing to loose, where Mellors has everything to loose. In the novel, this is certainly not the case. Connie is already nothing, an emotionless drone whose stature gives her nothing.

Likewise the Mellors in print has everything to gain. His backstory is greatly detailed by Lawrence, yet he maintains his strong silent and mysterious air. Once on officer during the war and a well educated pupil then tutor, Mellors could have the upper class at his fingertips, yet he chooses to be left alone. This book is not just about sex. Our couple is disenchanted with war, industry, money, and the people around them who think that those things give meaning to life. Some of Mellors' dialogue is written in dialect and for an American like me, it took a double take at first. However, Mellors can also speak perfect English, and does so when he chooses, not when people expect it of him. In fact, his speech is often broken when he thinks it will upset people, such as Connie's image conscious sister Hilda.

Lawrence spends a great many of the early chapters discussing artists and their self important selves, yet it is a great and subtle revelation when Connie discovers books in Mellor's house. Its often claimed not to be Lawrence's best work, but Lady Chatterley's Lover intricately weaves the love story between Connie and Mellors with multiple commentaries from Lawrence. Without being too obvious with his author views, Lawrence questions the English post war Jazz society and classes as well as the later artistic society Lawrence often found himself outcast from. This catch-22 is again mirrored in the novel. Where Connie and Mellors affair crosses class divides and angers their entire community, her husband Clifford's unusual relationship with his nurse Mrs. Bolton is entirely acceptable. I love Charles Dickens for his veiled or outright social commentaries, and I dare say Lawrence is on par here in asking those same society questions. Who decides these social barriers and imobilities? Why are some invisible to these restraints via power, position, and money? What is the right reason to circumvent these divides and do something about oneself?

Lady Chatterley's Lover has kept me thinking about itself long after I've finished the book. I'd like to read it again and find answers to these questions. Although it is a thorough British book in time and place, Lover also presents very modern thoughts and conjecture. After Lawrence's difficulty with self publishing and piracy, the book was banned until a 1960 obscenity trial. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't find the book all that shocking. Was it because I was familiar with the film version, or is it because the book perhaps caused our current liberal ideas and desensitizing? Four letter words and sex talk have always existed, but Lawrence's honest treatment of the subjects opened a Pandora's box on erotica, pornography, nudity, and bad words in art, literature, and film. I can't say the same for other works, but Lover is actually a very tasteful book, rather innocent in a way. The rebirth of the main characters through their love for one another. Lawrence was tempted to call the story `Tenderness' and the title would have fit.

Although the work speaks for itself when it comes to sex, society, and even religion, my edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover came with `A Propos on Lady Chatterley's Lover' by D. H. Lawrence himself. After finishing the book on a positive note, I was disappointed in this thirty page essay. One should always let his work speak for itself, and there's no need for this redundant and overlong speech from Lawrence. From World War I to Christianity, Lawrence's essays should be cut in half or is perhaps better for a college classroom discussion.

If you're looking for porn or sexual gratification, you won't find it in Lady Chatterley's Lover. Most certainly the book is not for everyone, and if frank sexual talk and situations is not your cup of tea, do skip this read. I'lm a fairly straight laced individual, and I only second guessed the book once. In Chapter 16 or 19, I thought the anal sex euphuisms were getting a bit redundant. I giggled a few times over the language, but was moved by other beautiful descriptions from Lawrence. At first I looked for Lover in Borders' small erotica section, but Lawrence's works are found in the general fiction section and in the classics section at my local library.
Lady Chatterley's Lover is by no means for children or prudes, but it is a fine novel that has transcended time and place. We may be too loose or vulgar in our society today-celebrities with wardrobe malfunctions and half naked women in music videos. Lover and the books in its wake may have caused this openness, but the book also reminds me of the good things about he past. Women wore gloves, men tips their hats to all, and writers wrote great books.

Torqued. A revelation each chapter.Would be more enjoyed by sciencey readers, but non-CSI readers shouldn't be afraid of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gelati's Scoop
I was surprised to find this novel and find out that it is set near me in Philadelphia. Living here in Bucks County, I go into the city often especially if a Geno's cheesesteak is involved. The C.S.U. is totally new to me, but I am glad I found it. The acronym stands for Crime Scene Unit; they are a group of forensic investigators that use cutting edge technology to help bring the perps to justice. The main character in all this is a rookie, Madison Cross.
Freezer Burn places four different people, killed and left in different ways for Madison to work with, challenging C.S.U. to put the bodies and the pieces of the puzzle together to solve the crime. I enjoyed the novel for many reasons. The pace was nice and quick, the settings made me chuckle at times as I know many of the streets mentioned in the novel. I like the detail Dublin goes into as far as the science goes, the other stuff with the gore and body parts, I could pass on. The plot line is tight and brought to a nice end; I like the gallows humor he interjects. OverallI got a nice groove on his style. This a nice mystery wrapped around science, good investigative technique and a little bit of moxie.
D.H. Dublin and his C.S.U. investigators are worthy of the time spent. Novels like this are nice as they stand apart from the rest that are just formulated and drab. I enjoyed the Philly vibe and had a good ride tagging along with the Unit as they went about their business bringing justice to the deceased. If you haven't had the opportunity to read one of these novels ( Blood Poison, Body Trace or Freezer Burn) check one out and drop me a line and tell me your thoughts on the series. Which is your favorite one of the bunch?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
I'm not big on Tech stuff, and I began this book with a little trepidation; however, Freezer Burn took me by surprise. It has just the right amount of forensic technical information to push the story on in an exciting way.The story is fast paced and told with a great sense of timing that builds suspense right to the very end, in true thriller style. My hat is off to D.H. Dublin for a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chilling!
Dublin's Freezer Burn was a remarkable forensics masterpiece. I was stumped many times but Madison Cross, the fearless, highly intelligent technician, led me through many weird cases to a satisfying climax. I'm declaring Dublin the best forensics writer I've ever read. Okay, so where' the next one?

5-0 out of 5 stars Freezer Burn by D.H. Dublin
A string of brutal murders break out around Philly, and Madison Cross finds herself at the scene of them all.She is even sent out of her jurisdiction to help Chief Boone investigate a gang related shoot-out at a gas station. As the dead bodies pile up at the ME and the pieces of the puzzle are pulled together, Madison finds out that this is more than just a bunch unrelated murders. They are somehow connected, and all of them keep adding up. Each one as gruesome and shocking as the last.

Thank you sir can I have another? This book totally makes all those crime scene investigation shows look like chumps! It pulled me in from the very first page, and it kept getting better.D.H. Dublin has woven together a story with so many twists and turns I wasn't sure where it would end up.I'm really impressed at the amount of research that must have gone into this book, and I give him a world of praise for doing so.You can tell that every single piece was well thought out, with every clue adding to the suspense and helping lead Madison to the killer.

I also found out that there are two in the series before Freezer Burn which is fantastic.I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of them as well!

Product Description
David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, England, in 1885. In 1914, he married Frieda Von Richtofen, a German national and distant cousin of the German war ace, "The Red Baron" von Richthofen. While living on the Coast of Cornwall in 1917, they were harassed and accused of being spies for Germany.

By 1921, the Lawrences were living in Italy and D. H. had won international acclaim for his writings. Mabel Dodge Sterne invited the pair to her home in Taos, New Mexico. Traveling by way of Ceylon, Australia, Tahiti, and, finally, San Francisco, the Lawrences set foot in New Mexico for the first time in 1922. Although he traveled all over the world, Lawrence was never as happy anywhere as he was in Taos.

Arthur Bachrach has lived in Taos for over twenty years, and he has come to know people who freely recalled the Lawrences. They shared information about the circle of artists and friends who surrounded the Lawrences and their lifestyles. Bachrach provides information on Lawrence's writings and the influence living in the mountains of New Mexico had upon him.

D. H. Lawrence died of tuberculosis while visiting France in 1930, and five years later, his ashes were placed in a memorial on his beloved Kiowa Ranch near Taos. Given to the University of New Mexico in the 1950s by D. H.'s widow, the ranch is known today as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare is the book
Rare is the book that can keep you enthralled and page-turning on a topic of which you previously couldn't hold ground past two seconds in conversation.

Or one that you can actually read cover to cover from first picking up.

The style of writing is as breezy as it is intensive and never dry.

An excellent work and book.

Product Description
Apocalypse is D. H. Lawrence's last book, written during the winter of 1929-30 when he was dying. It is a radical criticism of our civilisation and a statement of Lawrence's unwavering belief in man's power to create 'a new heaven and a new earth'. Ranging over the entire system of his thought on God and man, on religion, art, psychology and politics, this book is Lawrence's final attempt to convey his vision of man and the universe. Apocalypse was published after Lawrence's death, and in a highly inaccurate text. This edition is the first to reproduce accurately Lawrence's final corrected text on the basis of a thorough examination of the surviving manuscript and typescript. In the introduction the editor has discussed the writing of Apocalypse and its place in Lawrence's works, its publication and reception, and the significance of Lawrence's other writings on the Book of Revelation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The will-to-power
This book is an interpretation of John of Patmos's `Apocalypse' along the lines of Nietzsche's philosophy: the will-to-power, aristocracy v. democracy, Christianity as a destroyer of paganism and the fruits of the earth, anti-reason and anti-science stances.

Man, the will-to-power
`Man wants his physical fulfillment first, the marvel of being alive in the flesh, to be part of the cosmic life of vitality, potency, prowess and power. Cosmic power is phallic power (fertility).'
`The primal, old-Adamic need in a man's soul is to be master, lord.'

Aristocracy v. Democracy
An aristocrat acts from a position of strength, a democrat from a position of weakness.
`Socialists hate all free, upstanding, daunting men. A democracy is bound to be obscene, composed of false individualities.'

Anti-reason, anti-science
For D.H. Lawrence, the Logos is the evil snake. Man's fall is the fall into knowledge'
`The final condition of science, of modern physics and physicists is a naked and disembodied universe. The atom has turned into nothingness.'

Christianity, paganism
Christianity is a `thou-shalt-not' doctrine. It denies the body and creates misery out of vital want. It is the religion of `death', of the dead body and the postponed reward.
The old religions were cults of vitality, potency and power. They were religions of `life'.
Christianity destroyed paganism in the Western world.

The Apocalypse (Revelation)
The first part of the book calls for a renewed world under the Messiah.
The second half is full of hate of worldly power. It expresses a lust for the end of the world. It is the equivalent of suicide with subsequent self-glorification. Therefore, indirectly, it is the revelation of the undying will-to-power, its final triumph: `if the entire universe has to be destroyed, still, O Christian, you shall reign as a king and set your foot on the necks of the old bosses.'

This book is an original (but one of the many) analysis of the message(s) hidden in John of Patmos's book.
But D.H. Lawrence's Nietzschean condemnations of science, reason and democracy are totally unacceptable.
Only for H.H. Lawrence fans and `Apocalypse' scholars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
If you question authority (and organized religion), this book is a must for your collection... a real classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
This is easily one of the most insightful and profound books I have read in my life. Both the conservative Christian and the man of pure science will despise this book. But if you have an open mind, prepare to have it blown against the wall. Lawrence understands human spiritually like a prophet and conveys his insights in blasts of crystal clarity. This is my first experience with him and I can guarantee he will be a lifelong favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional - and written by an exceptionally talented native english speaker
You can get this kind of thought if you really spend time with Nietzsche or Deleuze, but very rarely is it possible to find deep thought written by a master of the English language. There is nuance here - and Lawrence would be the first to advise care - but if you can't learn from this book then you are missing out.

3-0 out of 5 stars An occasional beautiful passage in a generally sterile and fanatic polemic
The greatness of Lawrence as a writer is not in question. But in this final work of his , we see a 'visionary ' side which involves a neo- Neitzschean and almost Fascist reading of ' the Book of Revelations'. Lawrence may as other reviewers claim be here most interested in defying a pagan life- affirming tradition against a spiritually dehumanizing Christianity. But the main thrust is in his condemnation, a very strange one indeed, of the poor of the world for their envy of those higher people, the true aristocrats of life. Borrowing a page from Nietzsche's conception of re-sentiment morality he condemns the poor and sees their anger as barren and empty. So too his reading of John of Patmos condemns him for dessicating the life in a false and distorted spiritual vision.
Lawrence's work comes most alive far from theory, in his novels especially but also in his poems.
In terms of pure ideas his contribution , at least in this work, is more negative than anything else. ... Read more

This book was very helpful for general information on Alzheimer's.I would recommend it for anyone with a loved one that has this medical problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars you have got to be kidding me
I am absolutely appalled and saddened to see a book with this title.
I've been lost in the 'Alzheimer' labyrinth for the past decade.
I have no need for a condescending book of this ilk.
The title alone makes me want to vomit.
Shame on the authors and anyone associated with it.
Alzheimer's Disease is too complex a disease for a 'Dummies' manual.
    This deeply disturbs me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the front cover...
...lies a pleathora of easily accessible and directly useful information for the AD caregiver. What is not contained on the pages is supplied by weblinks and addresses for helpful groups and associations. The best advice often comes from those who have walked the walk and the author here is no exception. Kudos to the author for her bravery and much gratefulness for the gift to us all from the author and her mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to a collection of Alzheimer's books
Alzheimer's for Dummies does a good job in presenting the information relating to care giving and decision making for families of Alzheimer's patients.

During my mother's bout with Alzheimer's, I looked for resources that would give me clear understanding and answers of what was happening now and what was going to happen down the road. This book is one of several that I have on the subject. It does not make light of the disease or the issues being faced, but does present good information in a way that is understandable and clear. ... Read more

This is a book that I want to definitely see put into the hands of Californians. What will save our state economy is not tweaks in the state budget or borrowing and spending. What will save our state economy is promoting small businesses. I'm glad to finally found a manual that sorts through all of the red tape. Starting a business in California is hard, not so much because of the high taxes, but because of the maze or regulations that business owners have to sort through that make most want to give up before they even start. This little guide is a blessing and I hope its popularity grows. ... Read more
