5-0 out of 5 stars Those were the days...
There is a story told, of a poor Italian man who lived in a small house with dirt floors. His only true possession was a painting that has been handed down through his family. He hung it over his fireplace.Well, rumors spread and a investigating Art Historian found that the painting wasa lost Bottichelli , valued at several million dollars. After thediscovery was made public, the man was forced to sell the painting as hecould not afford security or insurance for it.This painting that was onceappreciated for its beauty was now appreciated for its large pricetag.

The point of this, and there is one, is that comics were oncevalueless pieces of old paper.People loved them anyways, and loved themenough to write this little book."All in Color for a Dime" hasa secret that modern comic collectors may have lost.It exudes joy for thefour-color wonders know as comics. There is so much excitement inrecounting the lost but not forgotten Captain Marvel, or even gaining newfound respect for Popeye. All those little treasures are recounted inpersonal stories.Comics for the love of it, and not for the price tag. Reading Golden Age comics for the stories, what a great concept!

However,as a modern comics collector, I seem unable to ignore price tags entirely.I must admit I chucked when one of the writers was astounded to learn thata mint Action Comics #1 could be sold for up to $300.00.Those were thedays.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic.......
This is a classic reprint. Authentic information from when comics were real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I read this book four times when I was in junior high and high school, and I'm so glad to see it in print again. Great history, great pictures, and must have for comic book fans everywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great look at the Golden Ageof Comics.
This book by Lupoff and Thompson is a pioneering work. Books on comicsused to focus on daily strips and almost always glossed over comic booksentirely. This was the first to give us the background of the artists, writers, and the charecters themselves. Well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, not Ithaca, New York
Heywood and Thomas give a thorough recounting of Cornell's history from the founding in 1853 up through the present day. While most friends of Cornell will probably be satisfied with Charles Milhauser's Cornell College: 150 Years From A to Z, this is a great two volume set for those interested in the comprehensive story. ... Product Description
Written by ROY THOMAS with HARLAN ELLISONPenciled by JOHN BUSCEMA with SAL BUSCEMA, HERB TRIMPE & FRANK GIACOIACover by JOHN BUSCEMARascally Roy Thomas and Big John Buscema are back again with another batch of true Avengers classics! They've packed so many fantastic firsts into these pages, there's no time to delay so here we go: First you'll meet a new face in the Marvel Universe, the Native American hero, Red Wolf! Then, it's all-out invasion when the Zodiac take over Manhattan, followed by the first appearance of the Defender-to-be, Valkyrie and the Lady Liberators. Then comes a set of other-dimensional threats that helped defined a decade: the sword-and-sorcery menace, Arkon, and the evil super-team, the Squadron Sinister. Follow that up with the origin of the Black Panther, and a crossover classic penned by Roy and the award-winning titan of speculative fiction, Harlan Ellison, that pits the Avengers with the Hulk in an adventure that changed ol' Greenskin forever. With guest-star appearances by Peter Parker, Aunt May, the Fantastic Four, Black Widow, the Inhumans' Medusa, Professor.. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little on the thin side...
...but there is a reason.

This Masterworks volume only has 9 issues of the Avengers and each issue was 19 pages plus a cover. That's 180 total pages of Avengers. Why so little?

Marvel understandably wanted to keep a major story arc, the Kree/Skrull War, together in one volume, the next Avengers Masterworks. This volume, therefore, had to be short.

How to sweeten that bitter pill? Marvel included Hulk #140 which concludes the storyline started in Avengers #88 even though the the Avengers are not involved. They also included a "Revengers" parody short from Not Brand Echh #5, the cover of the all reprint Avengers Annual #4, and two house ads. Still, a rather thin volume, all in all. Surely a price adjustment would have been in order?

But what is there is top notch stuff. Reproduction is first rate. Stan Lee may have hit the wall by the time the early 1970s came around but Roy Thomas hadn't and his books, the Avengers especially still had a lot of energy and originality. The artwork by the Buscemas was also great. To top it off, science fiction great Harlan Ellison contributed the plot for the aforementioned Avengers/Hulk story with Lovecraftian overtones.

So I give it four stars with only the low page count keeping it from five stars. ... Read more
