Product Description

This book argues that Tony Harrison’s poetry is barbaric. It revisits one of the most misquoted passages of twentieth-century philosophy: Theodor Adorno’s apparent dismissal of post-Holocaust poetry as "impossible" or "barbaric". His statement is reinterpreted as opening up the possibility that the awkward and embarrassing poetics of writers such as Harrison might be re-evaluated as committed responses to the worst horrors of twentieth-century history. Most of the existing critical work on Harrison focuses on his representation of class, which occludes his interest in other aspects of historiography. The poet’s predilection for establishing links between the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the prospect of global annihilation is examined as a commitment to oppose the dangers of linguistic silence. Hence Harrison’s work can be read fruitfully within the growing field of Holocaust Studies: his texts enter into arguments about the ethics of representing traumatic incidents that still haunt the contemporary. Harrison’s status as a "non-victim" author of the events is stressed throughout. His writing of the Holocaust, allied bombings and atom bomb is mediated by his reception of the events through newsreels as a child, and his adoption and subversion, as an adult poet, of traditional poetic forms such as the elegy and sonnet. This book also discusses the ways in which Holocaust literature engages with a number of concepts challenged or altered by the historical events, such as love, mourning, memory, humanism, culture and barbarism, articulacy and silence.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is absolutely amazing!!!!
When I first received this book, I was a bit skeptical about whether it truly contained the complete works of the illustrious Harrison Fisher.Needless to say, I was wrong. It contains it all. It even had Fisher's drawing of silent silver screen star Marguerite Clark that I purchased at auction a few years ago.It was published in March 31, 1918 in American Weekly. This is a wonderful book for any person interested in illustration or beautiful art the way art should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for the Harrison Fisher art collector
I collect vintage Harrison Fisher art and find this book immensely helpful with identifying items as well as enabling me to view collectibles I do not yet own but would like to find. In addition to Naomi Welch's cataloging of the magazines and books illustrated by Mr. Fisher she provides us with interesting behind the scenes information and photographs. Because the book came out a few years ago the prices quoted do not reflect current market values, nor should they be used as a means of appraising an item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderul Resource on Harrison Fisher!
I have been collecting Harrison Fisher illustrated prints and bookplates for about 10 years now.

Ms. Welch compiles so much of Harrison Fisher's work in this volume.
This book begins with a biography which has the most information I have read about him anywhere. Good quality materials are used; this is a large artbook with full-color illustrations printed on glossy, thick paper. Most, if not all, of Harrison Fisher's Cosmopolitan and Ladies Home Journal magazine covers are pictured here.

Each artbook has its own section that includes detailed publishing and printing information and is followed by the illustrations presented in the order in which they appear in the artbooks.Differences in first and second printings are discussed. Ms. Welch includes insets of Harrison Fisher's signed artbook contracts.
Various collectibles featuring Fisher's artwork are pictured accompanied by a value guide in the back of the book. Please note that postcards of Harrison Fisher's illustrations are shown in another of Naomi Welch's works.

Thorough reference source and great collector's item on Harrison Fisher and his illustrations. Would love to see more reference books in the future on Fisher.Hopefully, a biography will be published about him some day.

If you want to find out more about Harrison Fisher and his illustrations this book will give you wide exposure to his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!Just what I've been looking for!
A great book--comprehensive, great insights into the author's life, terrific color reproduction and sturdy binding so you can look at it again and again.A minor quibble is that I would have loved to have seen some of the magazine covers full page, but that was probably cost prohibitive.Somebody, please do a Harrison Fisher poster book!

Product Description

For many, the versions from Asian and Oriental poetry made by E. Powys Mathers during and shortly after the First World War rank with those of Arthur Waley or Ezra Pound. This volume, pairing his first two books, Coloured Stars' and Black Marigolds', assembles the best of his remarkable poetry, which even now reads with undated freshness.

Tony Harrison, a long-time Mathers admirer, describes the puzzles of Mathers' life and the fascination and originality of his poetry in his entertaining preface.

E. Powys Mathers (1892-1939) is most often remembered, other than as the author of Black Marigolds', for his version of the Thousand Nights and One Night' and as his alter ego, Torquemada' of the Observer - a name to conjure with in the history of the cryptic crossword.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fine collection
This is a fascinating collection by probably Britain's greatest living poet. It has an introduction, `Flicks and this fleeting life', by Harrison himself and another by his colleague the filmmaker Peter Symes, `It's all poetry to me'.

This collection comprises all his works for film - Arctic Paradise (1980), The Big H (1984), Loving Memory (1987), The Blasphemers' Banquet (1989), The Gaze of the Gorgon (1992), Black Daisies for the Bride (1993), A Maybe Day in Kazakhstan (1994), The Shadow of Hiroshima (1995), Prometheus, (1998), Metamorpheus (2000) and Crossings (2002).

Harrison's work unites film and poetry, music hall and classical Greek drama. He collects and connects a vast range of material spun from his insatiable reading. Not surprisingly, he opposes what he calls `the one-book creeds'. As he wrote in The Blasphemers' Banquet,

"It's blasphemy enabled man
To break free from the Bible and Koran
With their life-denying fundamentalists
And hell-fire such fanatics love to fan."

When BBC1 showed this film, despite the Archbishop of Canterbury's demand that they should not show it, four million people watched.

Harrison notes that the Koran said of the Greeks, "they care for this fleeting life but of the life to come they are heedless." But the Greeks were right, as Harrison writes, "It is here and now all the time, not in any hereafter", adding, "The recognition of the fleeting nature of this life is certainly the most fruitful condition for the loving of it."

Harrison celebrates the green tree of life bursting through the grey dogmas that would strangle it.
