Daß es sich bei Gerhart Hauptmanns Atriden-Tetralogie um ein monumentales Alterswerk handelt, wird im allgemeinen nicht bestritten, aber ihre Deutung bietet Schwierigkeiten. Weithin hat sich die Ansicht durchgesetzt, in der Dramenfolge walte dÜsterer Fatalismus in Gestalt eines willenlosen Aktivismus, und im Übrigen fehle ihre Einheit. In einer 1992 im selben Verlag erschienenen Arbeit - Antiker Mythos und Zeitgeschehen. Sinnstruktur und ZeitbezÜge in Gerhart Hauptmanns Atriden-Tetralogie - wurde versucht, Über eine detaillierte Analyse des SinngefÜges und dessen Vergleich mit dem Zeitgeschehen solche Vorstellungen zu ÜberprÜfen und zu revidieren. Vorliegende Arbeit, die als zweiter Band zu jener als erstem zu betrachten ist, soll im Anschluß daran die ZusammenhÄnge mit der Sage, den VorgÄngern und Gerhart Hauptmanns Gesamtwerk klÄren. Probleme in der Entwicklung des alten Mythos, seiner GÖtter und ihres Kultes werden erÖrtert, ebenso Verbindungen zu Homer, Aischylos, Euripides und Goethe; der Einfluß Schillers wird hervorgehoben, die Bedeutung von Wilamowitz herausgestellt. Den Titel bildet eine deutende Übersetzung des Aischyleischen Spruches "pÁthei mÁthos". Aus dem zweibÄndigen Werk mÖge hervorgehen, wie jenes zu ernster Besinnung auf rechtes Tun mahnende Wort aus dem Altertum in unser Jahrhundert weist.
