Scott is undoubtedly the most popular writer of the age—the " lord of the ascendant" for the time being. He is just half what the human intellect is capable of being : if you take the universe, and divide it into two parts, he knows all that it Arts been ; all that it is to be is nothing to him. His is a mind brooding over antiquity—scorning " the present ignorant time." He is " laudator temporis acti"—a "prophesier of things past." The old world is to him a crowded map; the new one a dull, hateful blank. He dotes on all well-authenticated superstitions; he shudders at the shadow of innovation. His retentiveness of memory, his accumulated weight of interested prejudice or romantic association have overlaid his other faculties. The cells of his memory are vast, various, full even to bursting with life and motion ; his speculative understanding is empty, flaccid, poor, and dead. His mind receives and treasures up every thing brought to it by tradition or custom—it does not project itself beyond this into the world unknown, but mechanically shrinks back as from the edge of a precipice. The land of pure reason is to his apprehension like Van Die-man's Land;—barren, miserable, distant, a place of exile, the dreary abode of savages, convicts, and adventurers. Sir Walter would make a bad hand of a description of the Millennium, unless he could lay the scene in Scotland fivehundred years ago, and then he would want facts and worm-eaten parchments to support his drooping style. Our historical novelist firmly thinks that nothing is but what has been—that the moral world stands still, as ihe material one was supposed to do of old—and that we can never get beyond the point where we actually are without utter destruction, though every thing changes and will cha... ... Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:WILLIAM HAZLITT.I First met Hazlitt at Leigh Hunt's, and scarcely knew what to make of him. I fancied there was something cynical in his pallid countenance, and common-looking spare figure, causing at first that kind of prepossession against confidence, which everybody has felt more or less in the society of particular strangers, who look not full in the face those whom they encounter for the first time. lie gave one no idea of the man of thought, nor of the sagacity of which he was really the possessor. He seemed as if he were not at ease with himself. His person was against him. It was not until I had become acquainted with the inner man, if I may so say, by his writings, that I appreciated his talents, or his metaphysics of which as to merit I was no great judge. I had at that time no idea of disciplining my mind to whatappeared to me so dry, hard, and useless. Study seemed to lead to no useful or pleasurable conclusion. The realm of imagination was more suited to my taste as a place of sojourn. Emendation of and perfection in things, seen or desired, appeared to me more pleasing if not more profitable. I did not doubt that Hazlitt was a deep thinker, but the good of that mode of thinking was the puzzle. His countenance and features, which certainly did not do justice to the character of the man, and in fact his entire person, were the reverse of what was calculated to impress upon the stranger the ability he possessed, or indeed of a remarkable degree of ability of any kind. Except that as I heard he had studied painting, and was deeply conversant with art, he would not at the first interview have attracted my attention. Men were present who shone much more in manner and conversation. I knew nothing at the time, of his " Essay on the principles of Human Action," or any... ... Read more

Product Description
Hazlitt is easily the most representative of the major British critics writing during the period of 'High Romanticism' (1790-1830), as well as one of the two greatest...No other critic is so central and in so many ways...The Logic of Passion is a book that distils over twenty years of thinking not only about Hazlitt but also about three more general subjects without which a first-class book on Hazlitt as a critic could hardly be written. (1) The English romantics generally; (2) what is rarer, in our academic specialization, a grasp of the eighteenth-century intellectual (and critical) legacy; (3) what is still rarer, a knowledge of the history of criticism as a whole...Professor Mahoney's credentials are impeccable. He has taught and written in all of these fields - English romanticism, the eighteenth century, and the history of criticism. His book is therefore rich in what is usually called 'background.' Yet his learning is carried lightly, as befits a mature scholar who is distilling a complex subject without confronting us with the fatigues of self-display and nit-picking. With the sureness of authority, he moves quickly and cleanly to the essentials. His method is rightly thematic rather than chronological...Professor Mahoney is able, without tedious length, to give a truly comprehensive interpretation...Professor Mahoney's Logic of Passion is one of those rare books one can warmly recommend both to the beginning and the advanced scholar. For its clarity of style and structure, its pace and verve make it as readable as any discussion of any major critic I have encountered. Yet...the subject is so richly nuanced that the mature scholar of both romanticism and the history of criticism will time and again see the implications with a union of freshness and penetration, 'herrlich,' as Goethe said, 'wie am ersten Tage.' ...
