Product Description
In contrast to previous studies that have portrayed Mary Sidney as a demure, retiring woman, this biography shows that she was actually an outspoken and dynamic figure. Basing her work on primary sources including account books, legal documents, diaries, and family letters, Hannay shows that Sidney was a vibrant, eloquent, self-assertive woman who was deeply involved in Protestant politics.Although she did confine her writings to appropriately feminine genres, she called herself "Sister of Philip Sidney" to establish a literary and political identity. As a Phoenix rising from her brother's ashes, she transcended gender restrictions by publishing her brother's writings, by writing and translating works which he would have approved, by assuming his role as literary patron, and by supporting the cause for which he died.Hannay also reveals--via court cases--that in her final years the countess turned from literary to administrative responsibilities, contending with jewel thieves, pirates, and murderers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-written account of Mary's life and works
Crucial for anyone writing about the Sidneys, this book is balanced, fascinating and readable.Hannay's impeccable research includes the religious background, which is somewhat rare among Sidneyians; she doesn't waste time on speculation, which is the abiding fault of Duncan-Jones' biography of Philip Sidney.I can't wait for Hannay's edition of the Countess's works. ... Product Description

This book examines how the political system of the Phillippines remains dominated by a competitive elite who oppose any significant attempts to address the country's huge social inequalities. The way out, he argues, is through the wholesale overhaul of the system of governance, leading to a new development strategy based on more, not less, state intervention, the domestic market as the driver of growth, and working together with other countries in the South.

I want to write—to write such things as compel the admiring acclamations of the world at large; such things as are written but once in years, things subtly but distinctly different from the books written every day.I can do this.Let me but make a beginning, let me but strike the world in a vulnerable spot, and I can take it by storm. Let me but win my spurs, and then you will see me—of womankind and young— valiantly astride a charger riding down the world, with Fame following at the charger's heels, and the multitudes agape. But oh, more than all this I want to be happy!Fame is indeed benign and gentleand satisfying. But Happiness is something at once tender and brilliant beyond all things.I want Fame more than I can tell. But more than I want Fame I want Happiness. I have never been happy in my weary young life.Think, oh, think, of being happy for a year—for a day! How brilliantly blue the sky would be; how swiftly and joyously would the gr.een rivers run; how madly, merrily triumphant the four winds of heaven would sweep round the corners of the fair earth! What would I not give for one day, one hour, of that charmed thing Happiness! What would I not give up?How we eager fools tread on each other's heels, and tear each other's hair, and scratch each other's faces, in our furious gallop after Happiness! For some it is embodied in Fame, for some in Money, for some in Power, for some in Virtue—and for me in something very much like love.None of the other fools desires Happiness as I desire it. For one single hour of Happiness I would give up at once these things: Fame, and Money, and Power, and Virtue, and Honor, and Righteousness, and Truth, and Logic, and Philosophy, and Genius. The while I would ... ... Read more

Product Description
This study demonstrates the extent to which reading and writing were gendered acts in 16th- and early 17th-century England. Renaissance gender ideology did not prevent women from writing altogether, but it affected all writing by creating different standards of acceptability for female writers than for their male counterparts. Lamb explores the effect of this gendered ideology of authors in a famous Renaissance family - the Sidneys: Sir Philip Sidney, his sister, the Countess of Pembroke, and his niece, Mary Wroth, two notable and productive women authors of the time. Unlike other works which analyze gender only in terms of women's writing, Mary Lamb explores gender as a determining force in the works of both men and women of the Sidney circle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly under rated author
I have always thought Mary Herbert to be a very under appreciated author. Her characters have a lot of depth, and come to life off the pages. This is one of the books I have to tell myself to put down, and go to sleep.

This is technically the pre-cursor to a full three book series called the Linsha trilogy. You'll meet a medley of charming characters including a talking owl, a bronze dragon who leads two lives (one as a human.), a clumsy, yet loyal Centaur, and some other less likable beings.

It's hard to write a review without giving away any of the main plot points that made the book so interesting - So I guess you'll just have to read for yourself!

This is an excellent book, and I'm anxiously awaiting her next story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This is one of my favorite books in the DragonLance saga. The character of Linsha Majere is well developed and intriguing. This book has action, romance, and mystery. My copy has typos that the editor missed, but for dedicated DL fans, it doesn't matter. Should be followed by reading the Lisha trilogy, also awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Following the bloodline
As much as War of Souls follows the giant sweeping epic arcs of Krynn, it is good to be able to watch what the children of the original Dragonlance Chronicles heroes are doing... or in this case one particular grandchild.

That in and of itself does not make for a good book. But what did make this book good was a good solid storyline, interesting characters, and enough intrigue to keep you going from chapter to chapter.

I don't mean to spoil anything but not all details get resolved, but it does leave enough open for a true sequel (rather than the following Crossroads novels which are separate stories) that I would be very much inclined to read.

A few of the details are easy to figure out on your own in this book, and there are a few details you want to slap the main character for not seeing. But to be able to read through the boatload of events going on in one city existing in the location in Ansalon that screams 'Please Gods! Destroy us now!' is very much the treat.

3-0 out of 5 stars A boring series
I was so looking forward to this trilogy. The look of it just promised a great read....but lead to such a disappointment.

The characters were likeable enough & the plot was good but I was left with an empty feeling at the end. I've come to expect a certain amount of action out of DL books & this had so little of it. This was more of a plotical intrique novel which is fine but it could've done with some more movement.

This is one of those books where the words are just crammed onto the page. The author spent too much time describing the obvious & not enough on making the plot more entertaining.Unfortunately, this was the best in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linsha Majere, Knight of the Rose!
This has got to be one of the best Dragonlance novels I have ever read. Bar None! Linsha Majere is ordered my the Solmanics Clandestine Circle to get as close to Lord Bight as possible. They want to find out anything they can use to discredit him.

Shortly after a ship crashed into the docks in Saction's harbor. Almost everyone on board the ship is dead. Having died of some foul disease that no one has ever seen before. This plague threatens to wipe out all of Sanctions people if the cure is not found soon.

Linsha along with her companion Varia (an owl) are pulled into a tangled web of lies and half truths. Not only that but Linsha begins to have feelings for her commanding officer. She also begins to earn a healthy respect for Lord Bight.

In the end she will have to choose between here orders, or doing what feels right in here heart. 5 Stars to this amazing entry into the Dragonlance Saga! ... Read more

The first title in a new trilogy that explores the Dragonlance world after the War of Souls.City of the Lost is the first title in a new trilogy centering around the character of Linsha Majere, the grandchild of one of the central characters to the entire Dragonlance saga. 5-0 out of 5 stars Now Reading
I was waiting to read this because the third book of the tilogy is not available. I took this on a recent flight, it is great and I see why the third book sold out. I am hoping that by the time I finish the second book there will be a re-print. This is a don't miss in the Dragonlance series, but don't buy it if you can't wait for the third book to go to print again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mary Herbert is staking her claim to the Dragonlance world
City of the Lost is the first book in the Dragonlance: Linsha Trilogy. With any first book of a trilogy a good deal of time is spent setting up the story and characters. Mary Herbert does it in a way that doesn't feel like an 'information dump', it feels more like a part of the story, which is a nice change of pace.

Th story itself deal with Linsha being a knight and some of the trials a female knoght faces. Yet, that isn't all. Throughout this book there is a good mix of action and story building.

The past 3-5 years have been a down time in the Dragonlance world as there hasn't been many 'good' bboks. Yet, Herbert stands tall with a captivating story and a hero that we can believe in.

If you're a fan of the Dragonlance world I suggest you pick up this book. Herbert is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Hopefully you will feel the same.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overwrought
Linsha Majere lacks charisma. There are a lot of details poured into her character, and she definitely comes across as a courageous, if unconventional, knight; but somehow I get the feeling that Mary Herbert is still trying to convince herself as to who Linsha Majere is.The writing seems a little overwrought, and the fantasy in the book (e.g. a modern city built around a spirit city) really doesn't serve the story.I'm still trying to finish this one, and I'm not sure I'll continue with the trilogy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to a trilogy
This was indeed an engrossing novel.I couldn't stop reading. Most of this novel takes places before DOAFS in an intriguing part of Krynn.Herbert did much better here than on her long-winded Clandestine Circle novel. This was a much easier, well-paced story.

Linsha & Varia are more entertaining & fleshed out too. There were plenty of other interesting characters including two very likeable Dragonlords & one not so likeable one. It'll be interesting to see what kind of villian the Brutes commander turns out to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read and then some!
This is one of the most engrossing Dragonlance novels I have read, outside of the core storyline.Linsha's character is well-developed and interesting, and the politics and intrigue of the book had me turning page after page.I can't wait for the next one!One suggestion for improvement: a map of the city and its immediate environs would have made the story easier to follow.Otherwise, nigh perfect. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
For me this is a precious book for it gives not only the story of the immense courage of a missionary priest but also opens the heart of China to the reader. The book concerns a French priest who is sent as a missionary to China. It is a story of Theophane's love of family, friends and country, all of which he holds most dear, However his love of His saviour and his concern for souls far outweighs these as he leaves all and taking up his cross follows Jesus Christ into the abyss of Communism which hates everything Theophane stands for. Theophane Venard was a Catholic priest and missionary. He longed to go to China to bring Jesus Christ to its people.Theophane went through a great deal of suffering but he never flinched. The book is written by people who knew him and is backed by many letters he wrote and received.I still hold dear the pain I feel in my heart as I read the last moments of his life.Theophane's taught the communist people that God existed:Existence of God: Aquinas,Five Proofs and that His Son Jesus Christ the second person of the Blessed Trinity still dwells with us here on earth in the Blessed Eucharist: The EucharistJesus Are You Really ThereChinese converts gathered closely around Theophane and when the communist authorities hunted him down they gave their lives to protect him."Oh Lord give us many holy priests." ...
