Product Description

In Still Life with a Bridle, poet and essayist Zbigniew Herbert takes an intriguing look at the cultural, artisitic, and aesthetic legacy of 17th-century Holland. These sixteen essays reveal Hervert's discriminating artistic eye and poetic sensibility, one that revels in irony, humor, and a satirist's appreciation of the absurd. An inveterate museum-goer, he focuses on the art of the Dutch masters, using it as a stepping-off point for a thoroughly individual and entertaining examination of the foibles, genius, and character of the Dutch people as a whole. The result is an unorthodox and revealing glimpse into the past that gives us a keener understanding not only of a distant people, but of ourselves as well.

Excerpt: Zbigniew Herbert ( listen) (29 October 1924 in Lwów 28 July 1998 in Warsaw) was an influential Polish poet, essayist, drama writer, author of plays, and moralist. A member of the Polish resistance movement Home Army (AK) during World War II, he is one of the best known and the most translated post-war Polish writers. He was a distant relative of the 17th century poet George Herbert. Herbert was a bachelor of the Order of the White Eagle and was educated as an economist and lawyer. From the supplier: Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert's poetry is both political and philosophical, incorporating historical events and problems that reflect the situation of Poland and its relationship with the rest of the world. Furthermore, Herbert's poetry explores the problems of identity in an occupied land. These issues are most evident in Herbert's Mr. Cogito poems, in which the persona, Mr. Cogito, so closely resembles Herbert that he even writes poetry. Mr. Cogito is forever struggling to define his identity but resigns himself to the impossibility of reconciliation with his native land.

Excerpt: Bolesaw Prus (pronounced: ; Hrubieszów, 20 August 1847 19 May 1912, Warsaw), whose actual name was Aleksander Gowacki, was the foremost figure in Polish literature of the late 19th century, and a distinctive voice in world literature. He adopted the pen name "Prus" from his family coat-of-arms. An indelible mark was left on Prus by his experiences as a 15-year-old soldier in the Polish 1863 Uprising against Imperial Russia, in which he suffered severe injuries and imprisonment. These early experiences may have precipitated the panic disorder and agoraphobia that were to dog him through life. (This was the same uprising whose preparations impinged tragically on the family of Prus' compatriot and fellow future novelist Joseph Conrad.) In 1872 at age 25, in Warsaw, Prus settled into a 40-year journalistic career that focused on science, technology, education, and economic and cultural developmententerprises which retain a universal importance today and which were vital to the survival of a country that had, in the 18th century, been partitioned among three empires. Of Prus' novels, two are perenn...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=601880 ... Read more
