From the supplier: Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert's poetry is both political and philosophical, incorporating historical events and problems that reflect the situation of Poland and its relationship with the rest of the world. Furthermore, Herbert's poetry explores the problems of identity in an occupied land. He adopted the pen name "Prus" from his family coat-of-arms. An indelible mark was left on Prus by his experiences as a 15-year-old soldier in the Polish 1863 Uprising against Imperial Russia, in which he suffered severe injuries and imprisonment.
