5-0 out of 5 stars A look at marriage, circa 1908
"What is marriage?" Robert Herrick asks at the beginning of a chapter in this long and intriguing novel. For the handful of upper-crust marriages he explores here, the answer he offers comes down to a great deal of "getting and spending": husbands forever trying to think of ways to make more money while bored wives conceive of ways to spend it. The endless struggle only drives them apart which then opens the door to adultery. This is exactly what happens with some of the couples here, though the main couple, John and Isabelle Lane, avert the last pitfall in the nick of time. Their decision is to throw over their whole lifestyle and move to a ranch in the West where, instead of living emotionally separately, they'll "live together as we have never lived before."

Herrick's views are very progressive for his day (which got the book banned in some towns), even having one couple live in an "open marriage" arrangement. He can also be quite noble, as when Margaret breaks off her affair with Faulkner while declaring an undying love for him, but realizing if they continue it will only "kill what we have." Herrick is most compelling and powerful in scenes such as these. He also explores the business practices of the husbands (most are involved in the railroad "game"), but he is more interested in the personal relationships and the changing roles of women and their increasing power in the affairs of the world. Perhaps the Lane's solution by heading for the territory seems a bit pat and simplistic, but up to that point Herrick has given the reader an interesting look at a number of modern (for 1908) marriages, how problems develop within them, and how those problems might be faced and dealt with. Herrick keeps our attention for the book's full 600 pages; it's one of his best novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light love
Herrick was a cleric , but his most famous verses are erotic playful ones, and not his devotional writing. Among them are some of the most well- known light lyrics in the language.
Perhaps his most famous poem is :

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may forever tarry."

This famous poem has about it a lightness bordering on humor, a kind of ease and spirit of delight. Itseems frankly far too hedonistic to come from a clergyman, but it certainly has given a lot of pleasure to readers.

Herrick is a minor delight, and if he does not really compare in depth, complexity and power of passion to Donne, he doesprovide his own special voice and music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gather ye rosebuds while ye may...
One of my favorite 17th century English writers, the Cavalier poet Robert Herrick succeeds handily at the dual task of producing ridiculously pretty--and humorously erotic--love poetry (addressed mainly to two women named Julia and Anthea), as well as a series of religiously oriented poetry that is a striking contrast to the love poems for its down-to-earth devotion. He also wrote a number of laudatory pieces for friends, relatives and the occasional noble, as well as a variety of comic/pastoral/vie quotidienne poems. It is interesting to me, however, that he is far better known for the erotic verse than any of his other work (particularly the devotional poetry), given that he was a clergyman by profession.

This volume provides a good, solid selection from Herrick's two collections, "Hesperides" and "His Noble Numbers", and includes several of his pastoral verses, encomia and comic pieces interspersed with the love poems and pious work. Alas, one of his most charming efforts is excluded, the lovely "Upon the Nipples of Julia's Breast" (and how can you go wrong with a title like that?). Nowhere near as popular as other 17th century writers such as Donne or Jonson or Dryden, and indeed somewhat less respected by lit crit types because his poetry does talk about things like nipples, daffodils and strawberries dipped in cream, Robert Herrick's accessible, graceful, smooth-flowing verse is nevertheless very much worth reading. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Early Herrick
A doctor (Sommers) operates on a man, saves his life, but the man becomes a brute and abuses his wife (Mrs. Carson). Sommers falls in love with her. The husband dies after being poisoned by a caretaker, and Sommers and Mrs. Carson live together. But Mrs. Carson senses a major chasm in class differences between them and also thinks Sommers will think she poisoned her husband; in a wildly unbelievable conclusion, she commits suicide in frozen Lake Michigan. Herrick's style and viewpoint are so cold and matter-of-fact, that we begin to wonder if he cares about his characters at all. ... Read more
