3-0 out of 5 stars A novel about university life in the early 20th century

This so-so novel is about the founding of a university (Herrick taught for years in the English department at the University of Chicago, going there soon after it opened), with one of its main themes being an exploration of the purpose of a good college. "The American university is a hybrid between a preparatory school for the professions and a research laboratory," says one character, which sounds very much like John Dewey. Set against this ideal is Herrick's criticism of the way he perceived colleges to really be: professors interested in their own work or researches and students who wanted to do the least work possible for their degrees. Herrick appears too negative here, complaining about the grunge work of grading papers and lecturing "bored" students (one wonders what teaching was like for him personally and how his students perceived him).

Character development is secondary to the bantering of ideas, and some of the ideas are old, or so taken for granted that they're unworthy of discussion - the feeling, for example, that some academics have that they "sacrificed" wealth and recognition for some "dream" they had about "the pursuit of knowledge" that"doesn't really exist in America anyway." Other ideas sound just flakey: "a university is to discover and teach the Art of Life," says the main character, Clavercin (Herrick in disguise), whatever that's supposed to mean. There is finally some interest in character achieved late in the novel when Clavercin begins an affair with Jessica Mallory, a psychologist, a very "modern" woman with independent ideas about marriage, parenting, etc. But it's too little too late. This novel falls only within the average range of Herrick's novels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Master of the Inn
I also have an old copy of this, and I also re-read it regularly and enjoy it every time. I'd recommend this to anybody who's willing to sit down and read it without distractions for a couple of hours. It will refresh your spirit.

By the way, I just turned up a notice in Time magazine from 1927 about an "inn" run by a doctor named John George Gehring in the Androscoggin Valley near Bethel, Maine. From the description, it's exactly the place that Herrick was writing about, and in fact, the article ends, "Dr. Gehring and his 'inn' are the prototype and scene of Novelist Robert Herrick's The Master of the Inn, written during Writer Herrick's convalescence at Bethel."

Herrick's own introduction says the Inn is entirely fictional. Maybe he was just trying to keep Dr. Gehring from being inundated with patients. -- Charles Ott

5-0 out of 5 stars Short but memorable, a pleasant addition to the library
I have treasured my 28th edition (published in 1926) for over 20 years. A short book, it is well written, with some archaic language. I suspectHerrick was a painter, his imagery is so vivid. The subject reflects theutopian tendancies in late 19th century New England. But that does notexplain why I reread it every year. The story is about a doctor who healsmen with broken spirits in his "Inn" in Albany.

The first halfis about the Inn and it's Master. The simple telling of the story ismoving. I can feel the bracing cold water of the morning swim, smell thefresh mown hay, hear the excited chatter of the table talk, see the glow ofthe pipes in the night down in the garden. It has some of the feeling of"Lost Horizons", but more real. The Inn is a haven from the cruelworld outside, but here the shelter seekers invariably return to the fight. Each time I read it, I yearn to meet the Master and join the"Brethren", if only for a season.

The last half unfolds adifferent story, not simply a Utopian dream but a psychic conflict betweentwo strong men. (In the psychological, not supernatural sense.) There is noprofanity, sex, or violence. The tension is subtle, with an unexpectedtwist at the end.

This second part of the story illuminates the oftoverlooked fact that sharpness of wit and tongue are not (or should not be)the true measure of a man. Yet there is no heavy-handed moral here. Thecharacters are three-dimensional and compelling (for such a shorttome).

Though it is not a "religious" book, I always come awayfrom it feeling spiritually refreshed and morally stabilized. I recommendit whole-heartedly. ... Read more
