Product Description
... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They should make a movie out of this...
If you consider yourself to have a twisted sense of humor then you will love this book. I read it and laughed out loud. I thought they should make a movie out of it... then I realized they did. Do not hold the Demi Moore movie against Carl; to much book for a little movie. I saw an interview with him and he showed the pile of newspaper clippings from Florida from which he gets his inspiration for his books. The people he writes about are based in fact. Florida is a scaring yet funny state.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie for sure
It's been awhile since i read this book and i was very surprised that there was no review for it. Typical Hiaasen, those who like Hiaasen will enjoy this one, laugh out loud funny at times. Do not compare this to the Demi Moore movie in any way or form since this is so much better. ... Read more

This large format duotone photography book closelychronicles the workaday life of Florida's unsung and largely unseenCracker cowboys.Their work is similar to their Western counterpartsonly in that they both work with cattle.Working in swamp andhammock, Cracker shows the behind the scenes love and sweat that thesecaretakers of the environment bring to their lifestyle. An artphotography book as much as a pictoral essay, Cracker is for anyonewho loves the cowboy life.It also shows that Florida is a lot morethan beaches, Miami and DisneyWorld. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CARL, WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?!?!
I have read every book Carl has written and I keep waiting for the next one, the new novel to come out.Carl, I miss you! Please put a new book out for us.No one does it better.Do you hear me, Carl?HURRY pleasebecause I'm going through Hiaasen Withdrawal!

5-0 out of 5 stars A picture of Florida forgotten...a must have!
Having had the forune of being born and raised in Florida's...pre theme park era, I have had the luxury of experiencing an evolving FLORIDA.

Jon Kral's photo journalistic approach to capturing a little known, and almostforgottenquality of Florida is remarkable. Not only for the absolutethought provoking images, but what they represent...where we are from...andwhere we are going.

From the images of the Kissimmee round up and cattledrive, to those of a lone horseman at the end of the day...one is left witha new sense ofwhat the true Florida was...and remains today.

The imagesrange from brutally honest, to surrealistic, yet each conveys it's messageclearly...provoking the human spirit and emotion.

This approach to a"land forgotten" should be high on one's list to view. Jon Kraltouches not only the meaning of the past...but how it drives the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review in Dec. 15,'98 BookList
"Kral captures (the cowboys) laboring and relaxing in rich monochrome photos that, when meticulously focused and organized, sometimes echo the sculptural quality of Ansel Adams' work, and when more softly focused andgranier, resemble impressionist paintings in-oddly enough-black andwhite." Ray Olson, BookList

5-0 out of 5 stars See The Works in Black and White!
I'm a Welshman who has ranched in Florida for nine years, and I can tell you this is indeed a remarkable book of atmospheric photographs concerning the life of the Florida cowboy. It is a creation that colour could not do,building up a fascinating, fantastic reality in an unique way.I salutethe author for his originality.I bought four copies, kept one and sentthe rest to my kids across the Pond, sayin', "Y'all better come an'see your ol' pop, Florida ain't what ya think it is!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Insight into the Life of the Florida Cowby
Jon Kral has created a beautiful picture story of the life of the Florida "Cracker".Words are not necessary when the picures tell the story, Kral has insight into the life of the cowboy, and it is obvious thathe loved every minute of photgraphing the men at work and at home. He putthe book together with love of each and every picture. Readers will besurprised and amazed at the cattle country in Florida. We forget thatthere is more to this state than Walt Disney and Interstate Highways. Thisbook will make the reader want to take a car trip to the Cowboy Country andsee the country in person. ... Read more

Product Description
New York Times bestselling author Carl Hiaasen serves up a humorous helping of "taut, fast-paced action...crisp and hot"After dispatching a pistol-packing intruder from his home with the help of a stuffed Marlin head, Mick Stranahan can't deny that someone is out to get him. 5-0 out of 5 stars High on Hiaasen
If you have never read a Hiaasen, now is the perfect time to read one. With Bushes in the White House and in Tallahassee, Hiaasen is in high order. He takes on the tawdry, vulgar and barbarian of Florida, from Cuban intolerance to Orange Bowl stupidity to the destruction of the Everglades and the ever-increasing northern immigration into the state. While in his heart he may yearn for a Florida that will never again exist he has a ruthless cynicism that will have you howling and should have most Floridians saying "How true, how true."The pity is that any part of this country that has been sold down the river to developers, raped of it's natural beauty and sold to anyone with money to donate to some local scoundrel's campaign should have a Hiaasen. To say that these are three of his very very best is impossible because each one I finish becomes my favorite until the next one comes out (he produces a new novel about every two to three years and while you are waiting you can always go back to the beginning--Tourist Season--and start all over again.)Of these three, Stormy Weather is my favorite. It is his view of the second "hurricane" of charlatans, rednecks, insurance peddlers and assorted thieves and scoundrels that invaded southern Florida after the big hurricane--Andrew--leveled the territory in the 90's.Hiaasen's style is the modified murder(s) mystery--you know whodunit immediately but the fun comes in tracking down the bad guys and in the knife sharp jibes he takes at all things along the way. Hiassen is a columnist for the Miami Herald--one of the nation's great newspapers--and he goes after local politicians and blowhards with the same gusto that you will find in his books. Some refer to his writing as within the genre of Southern Florida writers--Buchanan, Macdonald are two other examples--but each is unique in his or her own style.Of the three, Hiassen is the sassiest, the boldest, the one who makes me laugh until tears cloud my reading over and over again.Skin Tight is about a portrait of the plastic surgery business in Florida and he approaches the subject with a very sharp scalpel; Sick Puppy is pure GOP at the current time, if you have read about the "game preserves" that are being stocked in Texas so weekend big game hunters can go out and shoot something wild--but in captivity.I do not mean to suggest that Hiaasen is Republican or Democrat necessarily--he finds plenty of rascals in both camps. Please, please, please read just one of his books--you won't be able to pass the next one by and if you have never read any of his books, I envy you--you have hours and hours of pure reading pleasure (as they say) to enjoy. ... Read by Ed Asner
Six Cassettes, 9 hours

Contains:
Tourist Season
Stormy Weather
Strip Tease

This collection contains three classic Hiaasen titles. The set is 40% off the individual retail price of the audiobook.

Tourist Season
The only trace of the first victim was his Shriner's fez washed up on the Miami Beach. The second victim, the head of the city's chamber of commerce, was found dead with a toy alligator lodged in his throat. And that was just the beginning ...
Now Brian Keyes, reporter turned private eye, must move from muckraking to rooting out murder ... in a caper that will mix football players, politicians, and police with a group of anti-development fanatics and a very, hungry crocodile.

Stormy Weather
When a ferocious hurricane rips through Southern Florida, the con artists and carpetbaggers waste no time swarming over the disaster area.
Among the predators are Edie Marsh, an entrepreneurial young woman whose scheme to sleep with a Palm Beach Kennedy has fizzled, freeing her to concoct a colossal insurance rip-off; Lester Maddox Parsons, a murderous ex-con whose violent encounter with a game warden has left him with the fitting nickname of "Snapper"; and Avila, a crooked building inspector-turned-roofer, who dabbles somewhat unsuccessfully in the occult.

Caught in the middle are Max and Bonnie Lamb, newlyweds torn in wildly different directions by the storm. It is Max's fateful decision to abort their Disney World honeymoon and race to Dade County to see the terrible devastation. Armed with a video camera, the ambitious young advertising executive can't wait to show his hurricane tapes to his buddies back in New York. Over Bonnie's objections, Max eagerly sets out through the rubble, debris, and mayhem -- and promptly vanishes. The only clue to his whereabouts: a runaway monkey. But there's also a man called Skink who has devoted his very strange existence to saving Florida from the kinds of people blown in by the hurricane. It is he, crazed and determined, who prowls the swath of the storm and forever changes the lives of Max, Bonnie, Edie, and the others.

Their paths -- tangled before they even know it -- come together in a novel that continues the hilarious and scathing muckraking tradition that Carl Hiaasen has so mercilessly made his own. In Stormy Weather, there is no calm eye.

Strip Tease
Only in America could the guest of honor at a bachelor party become a mortal threat to Big Stoney and Big Government. Only in South Florida could a virtuous topless dancer join forces with a cool but clueless cop. And only in a work by Carl Hiaasen could we get riveting suspense, razor-sharp characters, and the most wicked humor imaginable.
