Product Description
A growing number of professional theologians today seek to push theological inquiry beyond the relative seclusion of academic specialization into a broader marketplace of public ideas, and to recast the theological task as an integrative discipline, wholly engaged with the issues and sensibilities of the age. Accordingly, such scholars seek to draw upon and engage the insights and practices of a variety of cultural resources, including those of the arts, in their theological projects. Arguing that poetry can be a form of theological discourse, Mahan shows how poetry offers rich theological resources and instruction for the Christian church. In drawing attention to the peculiar advantages it affords, this book addresses one of the greatest challenges facing the church today: the difficulty of effectively communicating the Christian gospel with increasingly disaffected late-modern people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A tight and sensuous offering
Tenebrae is Geoffrey Hill's fourth volume of poetry, after his debut "For the Unfallen", "King Log" (which received praise especially for its sequence "Funeral Music"), and the much-acclaimed "Mercian Hymns" - a book of thirty prose poems.

After the expansiveness of "Mercian Hymns", Hill returns to tight forms and religious themes in Tenebrae with astonishing results. The opening poem, "The Pentecost Castle", picks up Spanish love poetry to fabricate a beautiful, yet painful, music. Pain is not absent from the sonnet sequence "Lachrimae" either; it is there in the address to the "Crucified Lord" who swims endlessly on his cross without moving.

Tenebrae has been criticized for being "too perfect" in its formal structures. This has an element of truth in it; there is something tortured, and tortuous, about its beauty; it is at times a finely tuned instrument of pain. Perhaps this is why these poems will strike a chord in many who have felt the agony of love and faith and faithlessness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant poem by the brilliant poet of our day
Geoffrey Hill, despite being virtually unknown in the public today, is without question of the greatest, if not the greatest, living poets writing in the English language. In this poem, Hill writes of the French poet Charles Peguy, mixing French and English sensibility with a skill seldom seen before. As with all of Hill's works, the poem is a meditation on life, death, ethics, memory and the role of art and the artist in all of this. Hill's poetry continually seeks to enact what it says -- his use of rhythm and rhyme will delight, but also instruct. Young poets have much to learn from this maestro, and we will be hearing much more about him in the future. Sadly, as is always the case, the world recognizes its true artists too late. Of Hill's other works, his greatest masterpieces are Mercian Hymns (found in his "Collected Poems") and "The Triumph of Love" (available separately). His most recent work is "The Orchards of Syon", and he has written two volumes of dense criticism, mainly on 16th/17th c. English literature.

The first lines of "The Mystery of the Charity of Charles Peguy":

Crack of a starting-pistol. Jean Jaures
dies in a wine-puddle. Who or what stares
through the cafe-window creped in powder-smoke?
The bill for the new farce reads Sleepers Awake.

History commands the stage wielding a toy gun,
rehearsing another scene. It has raged so before,
countless times; and will do, countless times more,
in the guise of supreme clown, dire tragedian. ... Read more

From the supplier: A study has been conducted to examine the response of female Red Crossbills to dietary carotenoid supplementation. Male and female Red Crossbills were captured and treated with diets enhanced with red carotenoid pigments during pre-basic molt. Body plummage of males changed from drab red-orange to bright red-orange and females from olive-gray to bright red-orange. The sexes also became indistinguishable after captive molt, but there were no changes between sexes in call types.
