Product Description
Beginning with his first published print in 1963, Jacob Lawrence produced a body of prints that is both highly dramatic and intensely personal. This new edition of Jacob Lawrence: Thirty Years of Prints (1963-1993) includes 19 new prints produced by Lawrence since 1993, including 7 from the Toussaint L'Ouverture series. The book includes an essay by Patricia Hills.

In his graphic work, as in his paintings, Lawrence turned to the lessons of history and to his own experience. From depictions of civil rights confrontations to scenes of daily life, these images present a vision of a common struggle toward unity and equality, a universal struggle seated in the depths of the human consciousness. ... Product Description
Jacob Lawrence was one of the best-known African American artists of the twentieth century. In Painting Harlem Modern, Patricia Hills renders a vivid assessment of Lawrence's long and productive career. She argues that his complex, cubist-based paintings developed out of a vital connection with a modern Harlem that was filled with artists, writers, musicians, and social activists. She also uniquely positions Lawrence alongside such important African American writers as Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and Ralph Ellison. Drawing from a wide range of archival materials and interviews with artists, Hills interprets Lawrence's art as distilled from a life of struggle and perseverance. She brings insightful analysis to his work, beginning with the 1930s street scenes that provided Harlem with its pictorial image, and follows each decade of Lawrence's work, with accounts that include his impressions of Southern Jim Crow segregation and a groundbreaking discussion of Lawrence's symbolic use of masks and masking during the 1950s Cold War era. Painting Harlem Modern is an absorbing book that highlights Lawrence's heroic efforts to meet his many challenges while remaining true to his humanist values and artistic vision. ... Read more

Product Description
Comfrey is noted by both organic gardeners and herbalists for its great usefulness and versatility. Of particular interest is the 'Bocking 14' cultivar of Russian Comfrey. This strain was developed during the 1950s by Lawrence D. Hills, who founded the organic gardening organization now known as Garden Organic.Lawrence D. Hills was the world authority on comfrey. In this book, he wrote for farmers and gardeners in all countries, showing how this useful plant could be cultivated in both tropical and temperate zones to produce a crop equally rewarding for gardener, smallholder and mechanized farmer. Subtitled 'Past, Present and Future,' on its publication in 1976, this was the most comprehensive survey of the properties and cultivation of comfrey ever, and Comfrey remains undoubtedly the essential book on the subject, as well as a lasting testament to Lawrence D. Hills's indefatigable efforts to achieve a better understanding of it. ... Read more

Product Description
The history and terror of black slavery has been well documented in literature and film. Lawrence Hill s new book doesn t lessen the awfulness of the times, but adds a unique human dimension. Hill has created an uplifting and highly educational story about a shameful part of history. The Book of Negroes is sold in the United States under the title, Someone Knows My Name.Aminata Diallo was born free in Africa in the eighteenth century. She had a rich and lovely childhood until the day she was captured by slave traders and marched off to the coast in chains. Along with thousands of others, Aminata was destined for North America as a slave to white owners. She was eleven years old.Hill tracks Aminata s story through the circle of her life. We travel with her to South Carolina, New York, Nova Scotia, London (England), and even to Freetown in Sierra Leone. Each step of the way, we learn about the horrors and immorality of slavery. As we look at and listen to these diminished people, we observe how they courageously work at overcoming the psychological hardships and limitations imposed by their imprisonment.Bookclub-in-a-Box discusses the different facets of this novel. Identity is an important part of the characters and the title of the book. The finger of blame and responsibility for the terrible tragedy of human slavery points in many directions. North American black history includes a look at Black Loyalists and their journey to Nova Scotia, Canada. Freetown, Sierra Leone was the creation of British Abolitionists who wanted to bring the slaves home to Africa.Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel and the author. ... If you're looking (as I was) for information about THE independent certification program for computer professionals (offered by the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals, ICCP), look elsewhere.ICCP is mentioned only once in passing.Mostly this book isa promotion of the Drake testing network, through which you can arrange to take the certification tests reviewed in this book.More self-promotion than objective information (Drake compiled the information in the book). But there is some value in the discussion of the value of certification (biased in favor, but so am I).And if you're considering Microsoft or Novell certification you might be suprised to see all the other companies(from Apricot to IBM) you could consider ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remeniscent of Alex Hayley's Roots...a hard hitting tale of a young woman's journey
The protaganist is an eleven year old spit fire named Aminata. Brought up as a midwife by her mother. Tragically seperated from her mother, her father, her village and everything she knows by black "slatees" or slave hunters.

Taken accross ...seas she loses her identity as a muslim and becomes property, a mother a wife and once again a free woman returning to her Native Africa.

I found this book to be not only an interesting tale, but very historically accurate, it will leave you wanting for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Believable
Before reading this book I had little interest in history. The character developmentwas deep and I was soon drawn into the story and found the book difficult to put down. The book mainly depicts the life and struggle for survival of one young girl, her capture in Africa, transport by land and sea, in ways and areas not fit for animals, through love, loss, aging and eventual triumph. The story transported me back in time to view what it would be like to be a female slave, sold several times to different types of masters, some very cruel and some quite kind. The characters hunger for survival, education and freedom, things we sometimes take for granted nowadays, was enlightening and refreshing.I do not often read the same book twice, but this one I will.Apparently in the U.S. thebook was not allowed to be published by the same title.Instead it was published under the title "Someone Knows My Name".
I also read "Any Known Blood" by the same author, it was also good, but not as good as "The Book of Negroes". ... Read more

Product Description
Today almost half of all Americans decline to define themselves as either "liberal" or "conservative." In fact, modern liberalism and conservatism seem hopelessly fragmented ideologies.Liberals claim to believe in individual freedom yet advocate a more collectivistic approach to government and an increasingly paternalistic role for the state. Conservatives are hopelessly divided between two incompatible ideals--the highly individualistic, limited-state philosophy of classical liberalism and an older, more collectivistic tradition of cultural conservatism that holds government responsible for shaping social morality. As a result, modern liberals are economic collectivists and moral individualists, while conservatives are economic individualists and moral collectivists.

Centrists reject each of these fragmented and polarized approaches to politics. We believe that government has a role to play in structuring social and economic opportunities and in reinforcing basic moral norms, yet we are deeply troubled by ever-expanding government. We reject libertarianism, left-liberalism, and the various schools of conservatism as a model for government.

Part I of The Political Centrist briefly traces the trajectory of the liberal and conservative traditions. It argues that modern liberalism is an unprincipled fusion of classical liberal and socialist ideals while modern conservatism is an untenable hybrid of economic liberalism and social conservatism.Part II offers a centrist approach to many of the most contentious contemporary political and social issues. Those include:

-- abortion

-- affirmative action

-- the death penalty

-- gay marriage

-- illegal immigration

-- judicial activism

-- the relationship of religion and politics

-- the role of government in the economy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Perspective
For those of us who have become increasingly frustrated with both left-wing and right-wing rhetoric, this book's for you.The author, John Hill suggests that nearly half the population feels alienated by "liberal" and "conservative" ideology alike; yet the voice of moderation is seldom heard in the din created by the warring "left" and "right" factions; until now.

Hill's enlightening perspective is a much needed breath of fresh air, particularly since it reflects the sentiments of a growing number of disillusioned Americans trying to cope with an increasingly muddled sea of social and political issues. If you feel a balanced perspective is the best course of action in practically any endeavor, Hill's compelling spin is a welcome respite from the endless sea of hype and rhetoric. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Chapter 4: The Argument for Global Ecology
Though I've only read Chapter 4, "The Argument for Global Ecology," for an ecology class, I found it to be very eye-opening. It, and a supportive and like-minded friend, have convinced me to go mostly vegetarian. Hill uses clear writing, sobering facts, and a balanced perspective to make his case for environmental vegetarianism. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because, while I haven't read the other chapters, I'm not generally convinced by animal rights or health reasons for vegetarianism. However, Chapter 4 alone changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing book
This is the book that convinced me to become a vegetarian. The arguments are well-presented and the author addresses many important issues such as myths about vegetarianism.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well Intentioned But Poorly Executed
I am a vegetarian.I've read the book and found numerous errors. Some are little, some medium, some of the worst are omissions.I have read two reviews of this book that pan it.One in Environmental Ethics, the otherin Ethics.I respect the author's intentions and respect him for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars an accessible vegetarian defense manual
Mr Hill has written a very accessible and easily read case for vegetarianism. Vegetarians defend those who cannot defend themselves. However, sometimes vegetarians themselves are incapable of defense against carnivores. They should read this book and never be afraid again to debate with carnivoracious opponents. ... Read more
